This is genuinely unsettling. I had no idea if Ito's work could even be animated and have the same impact but you proved it can. The sound effects of the "drr drr" were extremely well done. Absolutely outstanding job 😃
The thing i love about junji itos stories is how he never once tells the source or origins of these paranormal oddities, leaving it all up to the readers interpretations.
Exactly what I envisioned when I saw that final panel the first time. Body horror to the extreme with the victim somehow still clinging to an ounce of agonizing life.
I never imagined the "drr drr" being a vocalization; in my head, I heard something more like dragging a cinderblock across concrete, like the body was scraping against the stone. That's a ridiculously creepy sound, and it's so much worse (aka better) than what I'd originally imagined. Really well done.
I imagined the Drr Drr sound to be the bones mixed with flesh scraping against the walls, since it's so tight in those holes God it's so insanely creepy
What always stuck with me when reading this story is what it must have been like, trapped in a hole where you can only move forward, before the slow mutilation, that feeling of being trapped deep underground completely alone on your own journey, sure there's people everywhere inside the mountain but that 5 feet of rock between each person might as well have been an ocean, I've never had an aversion to caves or spelunking, but just the thought of those people toiling through their alone moves me Edit: Also I imagine the intention was for them to be alive when reaching the other side, the twisting and pulling would be so gradual that while it would hurt, with the mountain pushing you and you moving forward you would adapt at a slow enough rate that it would keep you alive (obviously not in real life) and then upon reaching the other side they would either die immediately upon leaving the mountains anomaly or survive as some form of horror monster, and I also don't see the argument for the drrr sounds to be bones scraping, while it could be, you never see any bones actually scraping and I like the idea that the voice box alongside everything else is mutilated to where cries for mercy/screams in agony come out as hoarse pathetic noises
It’s been awhile since I’ve read the story, so I little surprised to find out in the comments that the drr drr sound was supposed to be the body scraping against rock. I think your version with the sound being from the human is better/more effective, really helps to convey how this human has been stretched and distorted into something else.
Good Work, Nice effort, thanks for doing this, at least i have a sound que for this from now on. I'm not scared or anything, Junji Ito's short story piques my interest recently. Oh boy i'm glued to the screen when reading his stories.
Appreciate! There's been a discussion over whether the sound is the poor person in the hole or the sliding of their bodies. Hope you can buy one of his books!
Amazing, absolutely unsettling and, I sorta wish I didn't watch this just after reading the Manga in the middle of the night. This is so good. Thank you for making this horrifying piece of art.
I know others have said that the “drr…drr” sound is the sound of them moving against the rocks, but I much prefer your interpretation. The idea that they become so physically, and mentally no doubt, warped that they can’t even properly vocalize anymore makes it even more nightmarish to me.
Okay I'm super late but I know how everyone's going on about this or that but... The *coloration* on him. The fact that it makes it look like his skin's gone translucent, instead of how the manga went with a much darker shade as if the blood had all just coagulated or something, or being overly shadowed. The purples and reds around the mouth that still hold onto that original look in their way. The *art direction* is what's smacking me in the face about this and I love it.
I think it's very good, except one thing: When I read the manga, the last panel always made me feel that the distorted and horrifying things are slowly but inevitably moving out of these holes, ready to escape into our realm. Your depiction of them are rather static. I think if you would "remake" this in the future, you should consider making them creeping towards the viewer. It would be even more terrifying.
Thing is, those SCP-like things are not gonna move so fast. They're actually slowly crawling and slithering through the holes, but given their hideously mangled states and being really crammed into the surrounding boulders and rocks, they wouldn't escape that easily.
