bro, you took on a massive challenge that even a huge studio failed, berserk is a very detailed manga, understand that you're one guy. For one guy taking on such a difficult task, this is beyond amazing and very inspiring! You have mad skills not only with blender modelling, sculpting, animation, drawing, procedural fx, and texturing, but also, your video editing is nuts! If you try a simpler style like Naruto/bleach I'm positive you could nail it! keep up the amazing work!
@amogusgaming.6681 Yes, nonetheless, this guy's work was very impressive. But it was just too much for one guy. It's like one guy taking on a full army. Yes, you can knock a lot of enemies down, but in the end, you won't win the war. Just imagine if this guy ran a full studio... His production management seems great also!
@@OneTyphun don't take me wrong im not discrediting him whatsoever he did a great job but this kind of animation is just too resource, money, and time consuming to animate like this
And movements should be less stiff-they look toyish. So do the static, unchanging faces in long, zoomed-in shots, as well as the lack of lighting. For 1 guy and about a week and a half of work, this is great, though.
It's an easy mistake to make possibly because they wanted for us to be able to see the frames, but impact frames are something you process almost unconsciously. You don't see each individual frame in all of their complete detail, but it creates a specific visual effect that the animator is looking for.
yea you play the video at 1.75x speed its a lot better in my opinion quicker, also add some more weight to it and boom perfection while already being better than 2016
And it has to accompany the motion of the character. In his case the Guts goes forwards and backwards before even actually moving and the distortion to match the movement is there before he actually moves, so it looks weird. Great job tho
One issue I have despite it being so beautiful Is the fact that the beautiful impact frames happen and then a very small sword clash effect happens which doesnt feel fully to scale in terms of power But it does kinda feel like one of those scenes where a water droplet falls to signify a big attack Idk how to say it properly
I was thinking the same about the feeling that it it doesn't scale in terms of power. The build up is just humongous, but when the swords clash it is like a default "kling" sound like it was just two normal humans fighting and not two beasts with enormous power.
yeah it feels like the force of the blows (and even guts' fall) didnt feel as strong as they should. wonder if it's just really hard to express through 3d than it is through 2d. animation still kicks ass though fwiw
i will always defend that guts rage should be a total black and white shot with some red sparkling from his eye, but diregarding my preferences, this is wonderfull
This looks AWESOME! Minor bit, the moment their swords impacted felt weak and lackluster as if it had zero impact. I think it would've had more impact if the other guy's sword got pushed down more, the sound being more crude than silvery, and if you wanted to go all the way, add a single black-and-white impact frame between the swords colliding scene and the Shockwave scene.
The thing is, the other guy Zodd is a superhuman demonic being called an Apostle it'd make little sense for Guts no matter how strong his sword is to push him back much
the impact frames are so good individually but they’re just doing so many contrasting movements, instead of selling one motion like they should be. also the sword clashing thing was my favourite, that’s so perfect. edit: holy shit i just looked at the end showcase IT LOOKS SO GOOD
the thing about the "impact frame" is that its a lot more on just flashiness than on selling the movement,,, and since its such a long scene it sorta makes the blow feel sluggish. the scene with zodd lunging towards the camera was amazing, though i think it wouldve benefitted from some anticipation before the big jump, i think the image of his face covered in shadows and his raging red eyes was amazing, this animation is a big feat!! especially for a single artist
15:04 That one single person made this is damned impressive. The smear frames really worked with Zod - but with guts in the first shot his arms look thin and noodly. It might read better if his arms were widened at the shoulders and tapered down towards the thickness you went for in the final shot by his wrists. After Guts was sent flying could benefit from some minor tweaks as well. As he's flying through the air, slightly stretching and tapering him would convey higher speed. Faint action lines in the shape of a cone around him mimicking a supersonic mock cone is also effective at doing that. There is no visible plowed snow from where Guts impacts and drags along his back. If when he impacted the ground it kicked up some dirt & grass, had a more substantial thud sound, and had some screen shake it would really sell the power from Zod's tackle. All minor things mind you. You did a knock out job!
The money shot! 15:04 The HEART is there!!! I can’t believe a single person can make an animation with so much more intensity and passion than a full studio! The quality of the animation isn’t perfect of course but i can feel how much time you poured on it! A 3d Berserk can work but only if a studio who’s been working with 3d animation for a long time were to take on the anime. Your work is incredible, not only on the final scene but also your editing and the animation you did all throughout the video!!!
Props to you! Glad this helped you improve your understanding of the animation pipeline AND, unlike many who clowned the 2016 version (me included), you actually attempted to try your hand at it.
This exceeded my expectations so much! it looks really cool and i think for the second scene with the big hit and the one piece impact frame the sword moved a little slow and didnt make it look very heavy
This is SO impressive! If you're really trying to capture that 2D look, you should consider watching the GDC talk by the Guilty Gear XRD animators. They basically give away all the techniques they used to recreate that 2D in 3D look.
nailed how the character and color palate are supposed to look but the part where gut swang his sword and the sword was blocked felt like 2 sticks hitting each other
watch the first few seconds of the animation in a 1.25 speed, makes it seem a lot more impactful and really gives that speed and force effect of guts impact. Really great animation 100/10 no one could have done this better
More specifically, Strive. And most of Arc Sys' games. All of their new ones use 2d 3d animation. Granblue, FighterZ, Guilty Gear, Blazblue, the Persona fighting games, and a lot more.
this is honestly incredible, I think that if you can recreate the cgi level from the Bonfire of dreams scene from the berserk memorial edition you can reach a good peak of cgi cuz that scene uses good cgi for berserk
As an animator i can't express how happy I am for finding your channel. Im using c4d and from your projects im inspired to start my Blender journey ❤ Thank you so much.
What nobody should forget is, that even the transitions (for example, the one between chapter modeling and animation) are all projects in blender itself that would drive you crazy as a beginner. Nice work, my man! I love your efforts! Not even start talking about the work for editing in premiere pro and after effects (or alternatives). All of the mentioned stuff is in areas where you could work in professionaly on their own but this guy wants to animate Berserk and show it the world with a high-quality video because he can
This is really good! Honestly, the only area I think really needs work is the compositing; it feels very flat and the colors don't feel quite unified enough. But this is still amazing work!
The problem that occurs with the sword hit is that there is too little wind up and far too much swinging, if you remove like half of the frames in that shot; it'll feel more impactful because there would be more implied force.
Damn man, this is one of the best videos I’ve watched… I’ve always believed that we can never reach beautiful 2d animation in blender, but this video changed this idea.
This looks amazing!!! The impact scene with the swords is perfect!!! Oh only one think that could make the animation even better is the litghting. When trying to create anime look in 3D I found out that most of the time you don't want the lights to be realistic, you will often want to place fake spots of lights in dark areas and maybe more suns that don't make any physical sense, but the same as the poses makes it look way more artistic when looked from the camera.
this shit looks great my only two pet peeves are that for the initial arm swing for guts, you kept the noodle arms rigid instead of moving the bicep first and letting the forearm and the blade follow offer, acting more like a wind whip effect with the forearm and even the blade bending with the motion of a whip, the blade obviously only slightly as giant thick heaping metal is more dense than bone and flesh, even with muscle, in addition to speeding up the last few frames to show how quickly guts swings the sword after the windup to the scene can REEEEEEEEALLY hit the FEEL department of the RAGE nd MURDEROUS *INTENT* guts has harbored over all these years in the eyes of the audience (instead of a speed similar to the wind up. if I had to guess, I'd say 3-4 exaggerated frames with a face stretch "feinting" behind the sword and eye contact and a bright flash of white when the swords collide, as well as much more initial movement of the blades after in the shot with the sparks to hide the actual procedural spark generation cause asking you to draw that shit by hand is crazy, even as a member of audience... also, the sparks are hot small chunks of metal. make them travel in the direction the impact is coming from. if only one sword is swinging, make them bounce off the blade like a mirrored path, only following the momentum of the blade being swung, aka make them bounce to the top left and separate the animation into frames instead of smooth movement where they suddenly lose their color because of the kinetic energy dissipating quickly from such a small mass [but that's not important, I digress.]) the other thing is more common in practice than anything. when you made Zodd swing the sword... you didn't make him swing his torso and right shoulder along the path with him. you made it more like a tennis ball racket... in wii sports... which i don't blame, you were very tired and new with this, hell you poured most of your heart and soul more into the line art than anything which really shows in a beautiful way. however, sadly, it makes the movement of the swing not match the intent and the power behind it.... which hurts the result a little... and, before i say this, please. don't take this as negative criticism. this animation, despite its very VERY slight flaws, is still incredibly beautiful. and I'm just proud to even still be alive to see it. this criticism... is only, *ONLY* meant as positive... if Zodd were to want to strike guts full on with the intention to kill in one blow with all speed and power... he would lunge forward on the sweeping strike... which would, in tern, make it much more likely that the snow from guts' split second evade not only be a lot more likely but it could also result in it bouncing off the edge, flinging it up further and requiring you to do less work for the lunge of the 3d model *for* the actual snow to hit his face and guts' retaliation after Zodd's flinch to be a lot more impactful and excitement building... for the cliff hanger. just some food for thought... marvelous work. 🫂
The part of the video where you talked about deforming characters so they look cool only through the camera reminds me of using freecam during cutscenes in a videogame.
it's amazing, i think the direction could improve on certain aspect (from a critical and constructive point of view) but... From the point of view of an artist is amazing how you achieved THIS, you made this all alone, 1 person, is a tremendous amount of work and i really hope that it was worth it, you deserve a raise man, really.
I was wandering how they made Arcane since it had an awesome style and found a tutorial for it. They used a method where the basic mash was textured manually with hand drawn textures and all the extra lines were projected from camera. After that they hand painted additional shadows from frame to frame. I am over simplifying the whole process but that is the gist of it. Check it out, might be something you can use in the future... Awesome video btw!
I love how transparent you are about your process! Most people would redo the effects until they are perfect or kill the project while trying, but you have the integrity to tell us the shortcomings and what you learned. This stuff is awesome man, keep it up
As much as I’d love this as a whole series I know that’s not feasible less than a minute of animation took I imagine over a month but if there ever is a berserk anime this man needs to be head of animation ❤
Mate this is impressive for a single person. Animation is extremley time and resource consuming, one episode of a show you liked likely took a fuckton of money and effort by a large team of artists
So cool, ploughing forward to complete something in 3D using a process that you haven't done before is no easy feat. Most people will quit at the first few hurdles, inspiring to watch! I would be interested to see some modern anime compositing on this, similar to MAPPA's before and after compositing Attack on titan video. Maybe you could do a video on that using this animation? It would be interesting to see how you break it down, and whether it could also be accomplished in blender instead of after effects? Cheers!
I loved it much better then the original, I just felt like it was a bit too colorfull, it kinda made me feel like it wasn't really beserk since beserk gives me more of darker vibe.
you did great! Imo one of the hardest things about understanding 2d animation is the frame spacing. The key frames with dynamic poses and right amount of inbetween to get every scene to look just right and smooth. I think you definitely nailed it with the character models. It's the actual animation that still looked stiff. But it's awesome you decided to try this out. Great work
I am happy to see that animation. I understand it required a lot of work, and the result its quite impressive. Its not perfect, but surely is better then the most recent adaptation. Respect.
3D animation in anime has come so fkn far since 2016, it's so frustrating to me when internet dwellers' first reaction when there's 3D in a new series is just to talk shit about how "CGI bad" or misusing the word rotoscope. You've done a fantastic job with this!
My only complaint is Guts' right eye opening right before Zodd shoved Guts considering that it was gouged out, but other than that this is peak animation
I think for Guts down slash distorting the blade also will add more dynamic to the scene. But it's really insightful to see how a scene would take days and weeks to accomplish.
This is amazing. I loved the emotions shown when Guts swings the sword down. Really shows his feeling of hate and his drive to survive no matter the situation even if it means losing his humanity, though the scene lacks the feeling of how much force he'd use to swing a massive sword down. The weight alone would cause it to drop quick (especially if Guts is forcing it down). Maybe taking a frame or two out might help with that and/or using lines to help visualize speed. Regardless, this animation is WAY better than the CGI version. Disclaimer, I'm not an artist nor am i talking bad about this animation. This is just my own personal thoughts and ideas that I would have loved to see in the 2016 Berserk. Keep cooking!
Your work is the best I've seen so far. Its amazing. When I see people making animations on RUclips it always feels like just content, it never looks finished or like it has polish. While yours isn't there, it definitely reflects the effort you put in
I feel stressed and astonished noticing how much effort and planning it took to make this single video. The learning, preparing and executing this animation and THEN recording and editing this video. AMAZING BRO👌
man, the impact frames are good! IMO the only reason they look a little clunky is because they happen too early, maybe making them quicker and having them appearing right before the dragonslayer falls down will make the scene look much better
i JUST discovered this channel with this video, and being also a 3D and 3D artist your talent blew my mind man! every bit of work you've done was incredible. You deserve so many more views
to be honest, i was never really too upset about the idea of berserk being done in 3d because of how miura's art style is so realistic at times it might as well be 3d (but you gotta at least make it good). great work!
Absolutely gorgeous just the rage scene from guts in the last panel looks a bit weird as if its over "drawn" idk but otherwise its absolutely blessed to see smt this amazing
I am now convinced that the most complete and manga accurate adaptation of berserk may come from fans instead of big studios. The sheer amount of high quality independent projects from fans tackling different parts of the manga might, over a long time, build up into a tangible series.
dude you blew what berserk deserves as an anime out of the water.... but also realized you dont have enough time in the world to finish the entire saga. sucha shame.i had to turn off 2016 during the first season and never look back. while you made it gorgeous with so much fluidity.
Amazing work I can only imagine how much crazy time it took. Especially that sword clashing and the SFX and that ground animation... just some bloom AO and volumetrics.... BAMMMMM you shot will be AAA quality...
The amount of work in these 30 seconds is just...well, it's a lot. But the outcome was worth it. If we had Berserk anime with this type of quality, millions of fans around the world would feel overjoyed.
You made something amazing. Bravo. You''ll go down in history for single handedly giving us hope that you and ArcSys will keep on making more projects with these techniques.
Definitely the only critique that can be given here is the impact frames' length. It should be almost like an in-between, not really there for more than 2 or 3 frames. A sword cut, unless it's one to end the fight, should not take that long. I think the actual reason is not really about the movement or the dynamics, but the pacing.
After watching this, I feel that I really, really suck as 3D artist. This is AMAZING my friend, so much inspiration, not only about your 3D work, but also the video edit. Thank you for this.
i think the best "3d" anime ive ever seen is Karas. it's mostly dark, which helps a lot, they did the backgrounds and slow moving objects are done in 2d and fast moving objects are done in 3d with a 2d drawn over them.
I think its great that a powerful and versatile 3d program like Blender is free.

the other thing is more common in practice than anything. when you made Zodd swing the sword... you didn't make him swing his torso and right shoulder along the path with him. you made it more like a tennis ball racket... in wii sports... which i don't blame, you were very tired and new with this, hell you poured most of your heart and soul more into the line art than anything which really shows in a beautiful way. however, sadly, it makes the movement of the swing not match the intent and the power behind it.... which hurts the result a little... and, before i say this, please. don't take this as negative criticism. this animation, despite its very VERY slight flaws, is still incredibly beautiful. and I'm just proud to even still be alive to see it. this criticism... is only, *ONLY* meant as positive... if Zodd were to want to strike guts full on with the intention to kill in one blow with all speed and power... he would lunge forward on the sweeping strike... which would, in tern, make it much more likely that the snow from guts' split second evade not only be a lot more likely but it could also result in it bouncing off the edge, flinging it up further and requiring you to do less work for the lunge of the 3d model *for* the actual snow to hit his face and guts' retaliation after Zodd's flinch to be a lot more impactful and excitement building... for the cliff hanger.
just some food for thought...
marvelous work.

The part of the video where you talked about deforming characters so they look cool only through the camera reminds me of using freecam during cutscenes in a videogame.
he has the basics but lacks the dynamic camera angles and perspectives, fix that and he'll be going down a long road of money
it's amazing, i think the direction could improve on certain aspect (from a critical and constructive point of view) but...
From the point of view of an artist is amazing how you achieved THIS, you made this all alone, 1 person, is a tremendous amount of work and i really hope that it was worth it, you deserve a raise man, really.
bro made what a whole studio couldn't
I was wandering how they made Arcane since it had an awesome style and found a tutorial for it. They used a method where the basic mash was textured manually with hand drawn textures and all the extra lines were projected from camera. After that they hand painted additional shadows from frame to frame. I am over simplifying the whole process but that is the gist of it. Check it out, might be something you can use in the future...
Awesome video btw!
My man rolled upto berserk fans of all people with 3D animation and walked away with a 99% like-dislike ratio
True legend
Man... It turned out amazing! It truly shows the potential of 3d with 2d like style!
I'm sorry but the poses and animation still looks really bad...
I love how transparent you are about your process! Most people would redo the effects until they are perfect or kill the project while trying, but you have the integrity to tell us the shortcomings and what you learned.
This stuff is awesome man, keep it up
ngl this looks kinda garbage from a viewer perspective, but hey... at least you gained experience.
As much as I’d love this as a whole series I know that’s not feasible less than a minute of animation took I imagine over a month but if there ever is a berserk anime this man needs to be head of animation ❤
it still looks really ugly
Like urself
wow! for me, not very experienced in 3d, it looks very cool, a master of masters
This honestly looks worse than the actual show.
Mate this is impressive for a single person. Animation is extremley time and resource consuming, one episode of a show you liked likely took a fuckton of money and effort by a large team of artists
Hating just to hate is nefarious work😊
solaire would be so disappointed in your negativity :(
It's one person, bro, also he is using Blender instead of Maya, the standard for animations
Better than Berserk 2016,i like the few close shot of the fight, keep up the good work
I just smiled and loved the wide ground shot of sword flying pass keep doing what you are doing.
you did great!
Let's be honest, yes he really did amazing job here but,... if this was real anime no one would watch it lol
I won't say that animators need to hire this guy. I will just say that dude you're doing a wonderful job. Keep it up. You don't need anyone's help
that is absolutely awsome
The thumbnail reminds me of that one Sukuna guy...
*"Stand proud you're strong"*
While yours isn't there, it definitely reflects the effort you put in
For the dynamic detail, this sounds like a job for surface shaders and tessellation.
Now we can experience 3 times the pain and trauma we got from Berserk, Nice...
i JUST discovered this channel with this video, and being also a 3D and 3D artist your talent blew my mind man! every bit of work you've done was incredible. You deserve so many more views
to be honest, i was never really too upset about the idea of berserk being done in 3d because of how miura's art style is so realistic at times it might as well be 3d (but you gotta at least make it good). great work!
There's nothing better than a 3D base with 2D animation filter layered on top of it.
Seeing myself in this video was wild, great vid man! Been experimenting with blending 3d and 2d myself recently so I love vids like these!
A good blend of 3d and 2d makes it look extremely good
Absolutely gorgeous just the rage scene from guts in the last panel looks a bit weird as if its over "drawn" idk but otherwise its absolutely blessed to see smt this amazing
Makes you appreciate things we take for granted a lot more. But still can't help but feel he did better.
Putting impact frames in 3D animation is a game changer
Finally somthing better than beserk 2017/2016
I'd take this over the 2016 style any day of the week. Seriously killed it with this!
I am now convinced that the most complete and manga accurate adaptation of berserk may come from fans instead of big studios. The sheer amount of high quality independent projects from fans tackling different parts of the manga might, over a long time, build up into a tangible series.
i expected just models or something like that, but this is just insane, i don't have words. Great job man!
I support you re animating the 2016 and 2017 series. In this style it would be 1000 times better
You deserve way more like and views!
At 11:45 I laughed so much when you were moving Guts' body
dude you blew what berserk deserves as an anime out of the water.... but also realized you dont have enough time in the world to finish the entire saga. sucha shame.i had to turn off 2016 during the first season and never look back. while you made it gorgeous with so much fluidity.
If possible try and add motion blur between frames. Could potentially solve the lagging between frames
After watching this, I feel that I really, really suck as 3D artist.
This is AMAZING my friend, so much inspiration, not only about your 3D work, but also the video edit.
Thank you for this.
thats.. a lot of impact frames holy
i think the best "3d" anime ive ever seen is Karas. it's mostly dark, which helps a lot, they did the backgrounds and slow moving objects are done in 2d and fast moving objects are done in 3d with a 2d drawn over them.
You are a godsend of the 3d animation community my friend, thank you.
