@@grimalgram when I first watched this series, I largely found Casca to be insufferable until near the ending few episodes. I’m rewatching the series now (on 23/25 currently), and I’ve come to appreciate her character more than I did the first time around
I almost had a similar experience. Though I found Casca to have a lot of interesting quirks as the story progressed. I think it's worth an exploration. What do you think?
@@grimalgram It’d be another great analysis, I’m sure! What other characters do you think would warrant their own video? Unfortunately probably not many; maybe Judeau… maybe Commander Adon 😂🤷🏻♂️
that did nothing for me. I just saw Griffith as a traitor and such a despicable man that I thought he just restored his honor (Samurai concept), but that was all. But even that didn't happen, and he managed to somehow sell his soul even worse than he had ever done before. I wouldn't even urinate on Griffith if he was on fire.
For me Griffith is a masterful reminder of the dark side of Dreams and Ambitions that we want to act like isn't exist. I feel like Kentaro Miura is whispering into our ears "How far are you willing to go for your dreams?"
Griffith’s decision to continue his self deceit by activating the behelit is such a tragic parallel to his earlier breakdown in front of Casca. It is simply the continuation of his self destructive cycle, made manifest by hurting the only people who ever loved him, dream or no. Casca and Guts would have cared for him to his dying day. The Band of the Hawk loved Griffith for more than just his dream, but he never learned how to love even himself, let alone others.
In my opinion Griffith works amazingly as a villain, we see a man who fights with an unturned drive to achieve such dreams, and yet a single man was enough to make him lose it all, and when things were bleak for him, it all came back but in the most messed up ways, and he didn’t even show any emotion in the end. It was like to him, this is just a piece of the puzzle to achieving my dream.
And sometimes it truly is a single event, person or moment that can break us. As villainous as he is, I agree; he is a fantastic testiment to story telling. Amazing character arc
even after rereading this series many times, i never tire of hearing people talk about and give their perspective on miura’s story. the editing and commentary you bring is so well done, and makes me appreciate the impact of these characters so much more than i already had :,)

@@grimalgram that’s crazy bro. I appreciate it. That was never my intention though. But big respect 🫡. I’ll give you a shoutout under my next video as well.
12:53 I feel like he states this also so he can detach himself from chains that put his dream at a risk. This chains being the loved ones that he can lose at any given moment by violence or a whim of fate. He needs to keep using people to achieve his goals, as any leader with a vision, from the lowliest entrepreneur to the highest CEO would in real life, which in itself is not unethical. So he eventually grows more into seeing them as tools, rather than people. Just to protect himself from the dangers of losing someone he loves so much, that he would feel a regret so deep, a pain so high, it could derail his dream and his mindset. Something that, inevitably, ends up happening. Building so many walls, a frozen heart for the dream, made him extremely weak when confronting a real failure for the first time in his talented life. Is like a virtuoso failing at playing not any song, but his favorite. For the first time. Therefore, he now knows, he is not invincible. He can fail. He doesn't have the toughness of a man who only knows failure and gets up again looking for a win. He has the extreme sensitivity of the man who only knows winning.
The time julius tried to assasinate griffith by a heavily poisoned arrow but the behelith blocking it looked very deep meaning to me. Griffith is bow safe but the behelith which he wears everyday is full of poison. Later near the eclipse it clicked me and i was stunned
Very true, it's a great scene and shows the power of the behelit, how it will protect Griffith so he may complete his fate. I'm not sure if it could be filled with poison judging by how powerful they are, but the symbolism of Griffith being poisoned by his choices and sacrifices are very active through the series
Wowzers Mayo5004! If u ain't a robot, how did u "get into" Berserk so late? I mean u said this great stuff by our guy here, influenced u to take the plunge, but how did u hear of this nigh-40 yr old manga & nigh-30 yr old anime that has influenced more western media than probably any other manga ever?!? I found Berserk late cuz I turn 40 yrs old in less than 3 weeks, & I got into anime late, & tried to focus on Seinen. I've never watched an episode of DBZ, Naruto, uGi-oh, bleach, etc.... they just all seemed lame AF & I've always loved comix DC > Marvel
yo bud, tell me when your past the eclipse. I wish i could re-read berserk and inception again in my life. Berserk is such a beautiful manga and believe me bro - its getting better AFTER volume 12 :> you enter a new era of the Convition Arc (my second favorite arc), followed by millenium falcon arc and then my favorite arc: the Fantasia Arc :> All i know is that I thought it gets worse after a chapter... but it didnt and I wish you all joy of earth to read it. In bad and in good times
I don’t know about any of you guys but when I watched Beserk and especially Griffiths life downfall and the eclipse, it gave me this strange sensation, I felt something eerily familiar about it which I just can’t put words to. I grew up a Christian and have known a lot about end time prophecy in the Bible and the story of Griffith is uncannily similar to the prophecy of the coming one world ruler we know as the Antichrist. When I was 5 years old I dreamed a dream and in my dream I stood at the corner of my street called Bowers Avenue and as I looked up at the sky, the sky was clear blue without a cloud and the sun was at the fearless noon. But suddenly the Sun went black as black as a black hole and yet it was still daylight and blue sky. As I wondered and stared at the black hole sun I noticed a cloud of smoke emanating from it. But as kept watching, the smoke was coming towards the earth and as it got closer I realised it wasn’t smoke at all but an army of black horse men riding upon black horses. And at the head of them was a black horseman larger than the rest. And suddenly I was terrified because I knew that of all the people they were coming for, I was one of them to be hunted. Suddenly I turned to flee and as I fled I realised I had a companion with me and in our panic we ran in different directions. I fled down the street towards my home and then the dream changed and I was in a BMX park with riders doing stunts on those ramp thingies. Years later I wondered how at 5 years old I could have such a complex dream.
Really enjoyed this wacky dream description, had me visualising it in my mind. The comparison between Griffith and anti christ is fantastic. Thanks for the comment 👍🏼
I found your channel completely by chance, having just watched your other Berserk essay about purpose, and I have to say, you are a really good analyst and essayist. Really enjoyed your perspective on different aspects of Berserk. Berserk is my all-time favorite piece of media.

I'm glad that you actually took your time and did a very well job on analyzing Griffith rather than taking him for his word every time. What people don't understand and what has been stated million times, if Griffith had no emotions towards, let's say' ANY of the Falcons (Hawks) the Ritual wouldn't have worked, remember, not ANY flesh and blood will do. In my opinion Gutses departure was a moment born of a big misunderstanding, where it was already cemented for me that Griffith saw Guts as a friend and probably the only friend, and even when you review his "friends" speech, only Guts fits it. Think about it, one that had own dream and would oppose him, who was the one who literally fought against the Falcons and in the end Griffith himself to join them. But that isn't even relevant since Griffith before saying "Sacrifice" did say to Guts that he was the only one. Any way there are more moments even after the Rebirth, Griffith, while Skullknight had Guts and Casca on horseback and was escaping, was about to crush them, looked at Guts and stopped himself, was it just causality, or a moment of hesitation I agree with you, people say Griffith is pure evil from start to finish, some agree with him, i personally like to view Griffith as the person who walked down back from the burning castle of the queen "Tombstone of Flames (2)" Volume 8 ... what i mean by that is that is the Griffith without his guard up, for me it is such a somber scene, one we will never see, even though i knew Guts was about to leave, the way Griffith was so vulnerable to him just broke me... We have the privilege to see how many little situations, misunderstandings and the fact that Griffith risked his life so many times for Guts YET from his POV Guts just randomly left like "cya guys" leaving not just Griff but all of them. I would've been more mad. I would've prolly told Guts that he's a POS :D
Really great points here man, this is why Griffith is so well written in a sense. There is a building of moments that created the cause and effect for the evil Griffith/femto to appear. I think he would feel 2d otherwise. Looking forward to hearing your opinion on my next video!
@@grimalgram thank you for reading all that, yeah cant wait, i'm also very interested what you thing about Godhand and overall idea of causality in Berserk, as Miura masterfully created it, and Void telling us how fate transcends human intellect and makes playthings of children hence many embrace their inner evil and confront their destiny

Thank you! And I'm glad you enjoyed them. I spent a fair bit of time trying to delve into them, so if it's helpful to you, it sounds like i have done my job
@@grimalgram they have free will that is why it is a spiral and not a circle. That is why the slug count was able to reject the offer. And why guts can make ripples through his actions. Griffith follows his own will, and was allowed to follow his own will. And his desires and actions align with the godhand and idea of evil. Regardless of how limited their capability to alter causality is. The characters personal choices do make a difference. And at times massive differences. A part of the story is about people making mistakes and missing opportunities given to them before it became too late. And that is another expression of the power of choices in the story. Choice is a pretty big part of the story, and has and probably will continue to be emphasized in other critical situations. Like guts not giving into the beast of darkness, and a possible replication of zodd's opportunities for choices.
It's wild isn't it!? Glad you enjoyed the series and hope this essay helped to clarify some themes and dynamics. Are you enjoying the manga more than the anime atm?

Love the video man! Great editing as well, Keep it up. I have been in wonder of the genius of Kentaro Miura for about 5 years ever since I read Berserk for the first time. The application of the question "How far are you willing to go?" into Griffith's character is just fantastic story telling and this video hit the nail on the head.
Hey man, I’ve considered making my own berserk yt videos like yours for a while because I feel like nobody has done a real high level analysis of the themes in the story and just how fundamental they are. Your last video was so fantastic, I really loved both the content as well as the aesthetic/editing and I’m really pleased that another person like yourself is giving berserk these types of quality formal analyses. If you decide to keep doing this (I hope so 🙏), here are some things concepts I found really interesting so far into the story as I am only around chapter 200, keep up the fantastic work!! 👏👏👏 SPOILER WARNING 1)Religious fundamentalism/ the fragility in blind faith during the conviction arc. Seeing how human beings in such depraved states of plague/poverty depend on faith to survive. To protect that faith, they will even justify murder, torture, etc. This contrasts with Guts, who is the only man willing to look into the darkness of the world with his own eyes (which is what draws Farnese to him). There’s a Miura interview somewhere where he talks about how he came up with Mozgus’s face, he said something like “a religious fundamentalist puts principle over people. I tried to imagine a narrow minded person in this image, and what came out was a square-faced man”. Really interesting stuff. 2) The vitality of Guts hatred. I think there’s some analysis still to be done that ties together Guts as someone who IS “berserk”. Even long before the armor, his conversations with Godo, and even the way he is drawn indicate that his deepest life force is his rage. My favorite panel in the series is guts charging on horseback in doldrey where he’s drawn like a wildcat. Miura in some interviews also mentioned that he envisions guts as a wildcat, which may explain why sometimes he makes Guts hair stand up in tense moments. One niche that I hope someone will fill one day is mixing an analysis of berserk’s themes with quotes/insights from Miura’s interviews. The process of how Miura went about building the story is so fascinating and I think some of his insights on certain things can really richen videos like this. Anyway, if you’re ever interested in yapping about berserk or getting feedback on scripts, I’d be happy to chat sometime. Otherwise, thanks again for the fantastic vids, from one berserk lover to another

Fantastic and relevant commentary! On both Beserk's philosophical themes, but also I love how you have made this relevant to the individual. Your closing statement here touches quite viscerally into what I (and perhaps many others) adore about Beserk. We can see parts of our own broken psyche/story in the behaviors of Griffith (and many other characters). Some of which you touch upon in this video. However, your calm, reassuring tone addresses us as the viewer directly. A message I hope all who watch take to heart. As I have. :) Can't wait for the next one mate! Keep up the good work.

@@grimalgram Well.. it was a long video, but as far as I can recall, what made yours stand out was.. You manage to abstract out the themes and discuss them without losing track of the source material. A lot of people either fall into focusing too much on the specifics and concrete plot for it to be interesting as a supplementary piece of media, or they abstract too far out to where it might as well be a general discussion of themes rather than a discussion of the book/movie being discussed. You struck a fine balance. Secondly, a well written villain, like a real person doing evil, sees him/herself as the good guy. At least to the extend of finding their actions justified. You present Griffith in a way that I think a sober Griffith himself would agree with, without falling into playing devils advocate for the fun/trolling/memes. You seem to understand that explanation isn't the same as moral justification and this makes the analysis subjective in just the right objective sense, if that makes sense. You also seriously consider the character instead of naively reading lines and taking them at face value, which adds a layer of depth to both the character and story that will be all new to the more casual/simple-minded reader. You invite the viewer to see him/herself in Griffith in just the right way. You also engage the viewer in the discussion in the end without it becoming cheesy. Overall just a really good video. The only funny downside of your video is that it inadvertently reveals how poorly made the anime is, especially the dubbed performance. When I say poorly, I mean so in terms of comparing the potential of the source material to the execution of the show. I dare say: as a professional editor myself.. it's just not.. haha, well, let's just say that the contrast between how seriously you take this compared to some of the anime staff is funny at times.. and sad ;) Anyway.. something like that made it stand out to me. I haven't watched any of your other stuff, but I suppose you've earned me giving you a sub ;)
Some grest notes here that I'll take into the next edit. Glad you had a chuckle too, always good to hear about the industry and welcome to the community 👍🏼
For a series where people speaks its praises Griffith is the one blindspot. He's a fascinating character too bad it's defined in the fandom as just an unfeeling psychopath with no guilt. Which the anime doesn't help with it making him seem more sinister especially during the eclipse. There are 2 similar but very different Griffiths floating out there. If I was Miura I'd be fuming. He's much more compelling as a character study anyway than a depiction of good or evil especially with the competition for evil going on in that universe. Then you get into the idea of casulity and how much culpability he has. The behelit gets thrown in a drain and ends up right where he's about to off himself after falling from a wagon he got on because he was delirious. The supernatural is very at play. That's what makes Guts so compelling he's fighting against the forces of the universe though even now we don't know if Guts isn't still following his role. Where does the failings of the man named Griffith begin and the fate of Femtos end. Lot of fun stuff to ask if you view Griffith as more complex than a psychopath from birth.
Fantastic thought process. I think the more we humanise villains the harder they are to hate and more it hurts when they make bad choices. I did feel the 1997 anime had a great attempt at this. How did you find the essay, did I remain unbiased enough to truly get Griffith?
I really appreciate the association of clips with ideas wether or not they were intecional, It really adds to the watching expirince. I would love to see something like this video but done for the manga, as it is a gaping hole that your videos could fill. The diagram was a nice addition , there is a lot that can be done with simmilar ideas. I will keep an eye out for your up coming videos, Keep it Up!
Hey, thanks for the compliment! The edits are fairly intentional and i do tend to think on it quite a bit. Sometimes I feel that the diagrams may not get the point across fully, but I'm glad it was useful to you. I have thought about blending the manga with the anime in edits, but since this is an anime essay i chose to stick to the 1997 footage. I do like the idea of going into the manga and creating videos from them though. What other ideas would you like to see a diagram for? Was it specific to this video or just in general? If i did cover the manga, are their any particular points or arcs you would like to see?
@@grimalgram I think that analising Farnese would make for an intresting video. As for the diagarms I think that the visualization of ideas is something that can help make it easier to digest. I would not dwell on the diagrams but expand with visuals in general.
Truth, Farnese would be very interesting. Thanks for the feedback, honestly I'm just trying to make these as grest as possible so I appreciate the clarity
@@grimalgram I probably will man. Love the way you speak and your insight on the characters. The Guts video is the most influential video i’ve ever seen on this app and literally changed my life.
It's very prominent, but also there are some other great themes that are just as strong. I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about the themes in my Guts video. Are they as strong as the ones in this video?
Your video does an excellent coverage of the Golden Age arc’s themes in the original anime. As for the rest of the manga, I believe that the dehumanization of Guts in Black Swordsman and the Conviction Arc (especially Lost Children) followed by the eventually donning of the Berserker armor all have evidence pointing towards a singular thematic question (although many, many other relevant themes are also present among these and the following arcs): Is it worth sacrificing everything to accomplish a dream? We see Guts slaughter possessed and pseudo apostle children, almost murder the likes of Jill, and develop the infamous Beast of Darkness. He abandons Casca for two years, and then even afterwards his crusade struggles to bring him anything other than more violent demonstrations of fury and trauma, culminating in the uncontrollable Berserker state that could cause the death of his new found friends. Following his path would inevitably lead to the death or abandonment of his comrades in a moment similar to Griffith’s betrayal and sacrificial offering. We see Griffith in the meanwhile accomplish his dream essentially, although his warped fantasy land is unstable and built upon lies. Is a dream worth sacrificing for if it will ultimately destroy aspects of your life or the lives of others? Again, this theme is ultimately intertwined with the crux of the Golden Age and what made it so compelling.
Yeah well said, it's a big question for large or small dreams and perhaps half the reason some never even start to persue certain goals. Will it all be worth it?
2 Great breakdowns and editing. I went to your channel and I was surprised to see these 2 videos are your only breakdowns. Which caught me off guard at the quality you are producing theses videos at. It seems you’ve been doing this for years!

I must say man, these last couple vids of yours about Berserk, have been some great work. I subbed of course & i hope u make more Berserk videos. "Put your Grasses on and Keep Struggling Sir" make one about the Weapons & iconography on the armor & weapons & aesthetics 👌
Thanks so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. That's a great idea, ill keep the symbolism of the weapons/armor/icons on the backburner for future videos. Do you have a weapon or piece of armor in the series?
Because the journey/struggle is what makes achieving a goal worth it. And if you didn't reach the goal, the feeling that you put your all into it will make you happier than just automatically achieving any dream. What do you think?
Did I follow my dreams? Yes. What did it cost? Everything. Free time, romance, health. Was it worth it? Yes. We are built and coded to be being of struggle and ambition. You will not regret sacrifices that pay off, only sacrifices which you fail to make.

Hey bro, another good one, nice job! You have a knack for presentation. though there's more to cover in this series alone, have you thought about any other ones that might be interesting to you?
Hey thanks so much for your comment. I have been thinking about more essays on berserk and am writing one up atm. Do you have any ideas you would like to see explored?
@@grimalgram No problem man. As for the berserk anime there's a few themes I'd be interested in: Friendship (main example being Guts & Griffith) and perserverance (Guts' hard upbringing and the resolve he gains from it) It's been some time since I've seen the show, but I reckon these two things can be talked about even based on the anime material.
While watching this video, I couldn’t help think of the parallels to Erwin in attack on Titan. Imagine, for a second, if Erwin valued finding the truth over humanity, and sacrificed his soldiers, like Levi and Eren, to attain the truth.
A great comparison! A deep dive of AOT is definately on the table. But I'd have to check out what hasn't been created about it or what might be missing on RUclips. Is there any concepts you might want to see?
@@grimalgramI think the same focus of this video; what would you do to achieve your dreams? Griffith is the villainous side of the coin, but Erwin in the end did put humanity and his comrades over his own dream, making him the heroic side of the coin. But just like a coin, the two options are just a hairs breadth apart from each other.
Truly amazing video man, discovered your channel through the last video and was really hoping you would cover more berserk like the previous video. Just one question, what is the name of the background music throughout most of the video before the final segment? Much love
Hey! Thanks so much for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed. Which essay did you like more, Guts or Griffith? As for the song, I can't tell you off the top of my head without heading back into the edit. But it's all in the youtube audio library. Hope that helps!
I don't know my dream and goal's price. However, no matter what, I'll never sacrifice my friends and families or any strangers to hellish landscape, and be tormented forever
Thats fair to say, but would you sacrifice friends and family for smaller victories and for lesser consequences? I think Griffiths story prompts us to think about this concept
People talk about character arcs. There's Early Golden Age Griffith, Political Griffith, Griffith after losing to Guts, Post-Torture Griffith, Insane Griffith, and Femto Griffith.
It’s about time I see THE correct interpretation from someone else concerning Guts’ and Griffiths relationship! All that bullshit bout Griffith having romantic feelings for guts and other bs I already forgot about, excellent video man! Excellent commentary!
I feel the idea of chasing power can always bet tainted and like the idea of self mastery more. Power seems to always come from a place of wanting more, mastery comes from being a better person.
It's a very interesting proposition. I think many people would assume they wouldn't do the unthinkable untill it is presented to them. As for those that are differently abled, it would definitely depend on the person, who they are and how they view their own position in life, just as a non disabled person would.
Great pick up. It actually was cut from one of my edits but I do think there is a lot to unpack in it. I plan to potentially reference it in a later berserk video. What do you think I should have covered about it in the content of this essay?
Oh thank you! What a awesome compliment and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'd love to hear your opinion on my other berserk essay. Feel free to let me know your thoughts 🤜🏼🤛🏼
I agree that Griffith changed after the dungeon. But there were signs leading to his demise. Like what he does to Charlotte and so on. I think when he was younger he was more peak, but as he got more power he became entitled. What do you think?
@@grimalgram always felt that Griffith was willing to get dirty himself. He used others but would be willing to put himself in harms way. Once he couldnt do that for his goals, he was essentially dead. The god hand gave him a choice of kill the people you used to know or.... walk and talk again
Some people are so fine just enjoying all the adventures life gives them, without having a main dream. You definately don't need one to have a happy life. Would you agree?
Part of me thinks that one should be ambitious like Griffith, however it seems as though Griffith went too far and ironically went outside of his dream to hurt Guts and Casca.
@@spencerfoote6977 I think that is a valid point. I would say that it wasn't ambition that was Griffiths undoing, but his pride. Do you think he could have become a good leader of a kingdom if he didn't let pride get in the way?
@@grimalgram I think he could have been because Guts on the contrast has defied his destiny time and time through out his story. If Griffith didn’t do the betrayal then the story wouldn’t be what it is. Griffith now is just someone who climbs higher and higher because he has nothing better to do as a God.
@@spencerfoote6977 I like tto think so as well, there is a lesson in doing something for the sake of itself. (like gaining money/power/land for the sake of having more)
@@grimalgram My initial thoughts is because Griffith had the behilit, it was going to end in this manner one way or another. But, there is also a part of me in believing that Guts and Griffith together would’ve found a way to overcome this, just like the many battles they fought together. Like, defying their fate would’ve made for even more dramatic situation.
@@ACE2015 yeah I could totally see that happening, and would want to see that as a viewer too. Though in this dark anime, I think Miura would see it as an easy escape.
Had to look this up haha, fair comparison. If Griffith is Squidward, who is Patrick's counterpart? ruclips.net/video/VJL6P_4cS2Y/видео.htmlfeature=shared
What i dont understand is how Griffith considers Guts his friend because he is “A man who puts his heart and soul into protecting his dream” even though at the time Guts doesn’t have a dream in the first place
I think Guts is the only man who Griffith makes an exception for in this regard. Guts on his own stands out from others, he is ruthless, with an unstoppable energy for survival since a young age. He is extremely competent. YET, in spite of this, he seemingly does it all for no reason at all. That's what in my opinion keeps Griffith so interested in him. I mean he is fascinating, killing 100 men with no aspiration at all....its baffling. Guts is the ONLY other Hawks member who holds himself to ridiculously high standards as Griffith does, but for Guts its only in the context of battle, and for no other reason than because its all he knows how to do. Imo Griffith respects this dedication and competence in Guts, despite the fact he doesn't have a vision
@@jpetrullo6890 it’s also due to the fact that out of the entirety of the band of the hawk guts is the only one who stands on his own. he doesn’t NEED griffith like the rest of the band does, he has a glowing respect for him yes but guts is completely self sufficient. griffith had to bargain to gain his following while the rest willingly followed. that attracts griffith because as one who is constantly ogled at to have one whose identity is separate from that makes guts more relatable and “equal” to griffith though he’d never admit it. kentarou was really a genius when it comes to character. they’re so complex and more importantly human, which brings them alive, they feel like real people to me. easily why it remains my favorite piece of literature ever.
@@jpetrullo6890also, i don’t think he necessarily makes an “exception” i don’t believe what griffith said he actually believes, i think what he really meant is he can only respect a man who carves his own path, which guts does despite not having a “dream.” i think griffith just didn’t understand it that way and limited it to following a dream, because despite fighting for griffiths dream all the rest of the band had their own dreams that they put their life on the line for, they just allowed griffith to carve the path for them, placing onus on griffith; with guts griffith felt no responsibility because guts is guts, despite who he swings his sword for he will always walk his own on path. that’s a huge weight off someone when he has thousands of followers, which is why he felt he could lean on guts. fascinating characters truly.
Grifiths dreams are like a two sharped sword: In the on hand you don’t want to hurt your family and friends and want that they joined your dream. But on the other hand 😅 … i want to have the power rule the world and become a god. And not gonna lie the most of us would do the same like Griffith (don’t think i mean casca)

@@grimalgram when I first watched this series, I largely found Casca to be insufferable until near the ending few episodes. I’m rewatching the series now (on 23/25 currently), and I’ve come to appreciate her character more than I did the first time around
LET'S DO THIS!
I almost had a similar experience. Though I found Casca to have a lot of interesting quirks as the story progressed. I think it's worth an exploration. What do you think?
@@grimalgram It’d be another great analysis, I’m sure! What other characters do you think would warrant their own video? Unfortunately probably not many; maybe Judeau… maybe Commander Adon 😂🤷🏻♂️
griffith cackling in the water with the blood from his own suicide attempt dripping down to the behelit. MAN, that just drilled my emotions
So true, and their is just so much weight that has been built up through the episodes by that point. It's crushing, it hurts to watch
that did nothing for me.
Definately there is a huge commentary on this, great Pickup. What else was Miura trying to tell us through berserk?
Ur saying it like the Average Joe's dream is to ruin over the world
@@qoganjacks146 id sacrifice others
Griffith’s decision to continue his self deceit by activating the behelit is such a tragic parallel to his earlier breakdown in front of Casca. It is simply the continuation of his self destructive cycle, made manifest by hurting the only people who ever loved him, dream or no. Casca and Guts would have cared for him to his dying day. The Band of the Hawk loved Griffith for more than just his dream, but he never learned how to love even himself, let alone others.
This! THIS is a great piece of analysis. I totally agree and further more your reference to the previous scene is spot on
In my opinion Griffith works amazingly as a villain, we see a man who fights with an unturned drive to achieve such dreams, and yet a single man was enough to make him lose it all, and when things were bleak for him, it all came back but in the most messed up ways, and he didn’t even show any emotion in the end.

Your final line is potent and a great way to explain Griffiths ego explosion after the guts duel. Hope you like the next video 🤜🏼🤛🏼

@@benparrish672i just havent watched it i guess idk ive heard about it but didnt really know what it was about until i watched this video.

"Demonize his choices"?! Dude became a demon through his choices!
Are you ready for a free will argument? Haha

@@claycranmer3426 thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed the structure of the last video and really appreciate the highpraise for my story telling 🏆
SPOILER WARNING
1)Religious fundamentalism/ the fragility in blind faith during the conviction arc.

Wow, thanks for the compliment and I'm glad it was able to be near the top of your list. What made it stand out do you think?

Single best breakdown of the series I've seen.
What high praise! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to check out my Guts essay too, and tell me your thoughts 🤜🏼🤛🏼

@@danielb.7224 thankyou! Glad to have you along for the journey 🤜🏼🤛🏼
This theme definitely extends beyond the 1997 series, I find it to be the overarching question consistently asked by the whole of the manga.
Will it all be worth it?

this autoplayed and i just assumed it was an old video… now i wait for the next part…
Haha sorry! Young channel here. Feel free to check out my other berserk vid while you wait
Why to have dreams at all if you are not willing to achieve them? The cost, the cost is always high
If you dont regret sacrifices that pay off, than which type of sacrifice do you regret?
You just got a subscriber this video is very well done keep it up
@@motornoise5830 glad to have you part of the community. Feel free to check out my Guts video if you haven't seen it. Love to hear which one you like better
@grimalgram I watched the Guts video first and it was also really goodI think I like it slightly more then this one and excited to see who you cover next.
@@motornoise5830oh nice! thanks for the feedback 🙂 I'll get to work
Fang Yuan is like an upgraded version of griffith.
Just started looking into the character. Interesting comparison, do you like them more than Griffith? Why?
Holy smokes, Well written and done.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
What an amazing video
Thank you! And I'm glad you enjoyed it. Feel free to check out my Guts video too and tell me know what you think 🙂
As for the berserk anime there's a few themes I'd be interested in:
Friendship (main example being Guts & Griffith) and perserverance (Guts' hard upbringing and the resolve he gains from it)
It's been some time since I've seen the show, but I reckon these two things can be talked about even based on the anime material.
Noted my friend. These are fantastic essay, points 🏆
Yeah well put. I'll keep this in mind for future AOT content. Thanks man 🤜🏼🤛🏼
This was sooo gooood
Thank you! Hope you like the next one too
this video was great! One persons dream will always be another persons nightmare.
I love this concept! And it's so true, just as someone nightmare could be anothers dream.
Hope that helps!
excellent work
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the next video too
I don't know my dream and goal's price.
Yes so true, Griffiths arc is fascinating to watch. Hope you enjoyed the essay 🤜🏼🤛🏼
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Thank you! Hope you like the rest of the series. Let me know what you think
Great analysis
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed, feel free to check out my other berserk essay too 🤜🏼🤛🏼
love your channel men
Thanks man! Hope you like the next vid too and look out for more community posts 🙂
It’s about time I see THE correct interpretation from someone else concerning Guts’ and Griffiths relationship! All that bullshit bout Griffith having romantic feelings for guts and other bs I already forgot about, excellent video man! Excellent commentary!
Thanks mate! It's interesting the various ideas on Griffiths relationship with Guts. Would you view it differently if Griffith was a women?
Lack of power and lack of will to power is what corrupts. Not chasing power itself.
Griffith was corrupted by weakness and lack of power against Guts.
I feel the idea of chasing power can always bet tainted and like the idea of self mastery more. Power seems to always come from a place of wanting more, mastery comes from being a better person.
18:05 imo this is not jealousy or pride, this is love and passion.
Interesting, can you explain why love and passion are more appropriate?
We prioritise our ego over our dream or our ego of our dream
Great video
@@brandedswrdsman thank you 🙂 hope you enjoy the next one too
@@grimalgram thanks, I subbed and have notis on!
You rock! See you in the next vid
When i think about Griffith i always wonder how many completely paralyzed people would sacrifice their loved ones to be able bodied again...
It's a very interesting proposition. I think many people would assume they wouldn't do the unthinkable untill it is presented to them. As for those that are differently abled, it would definitely depend on the person, who they are and how they view their own position in life, just as a non disabled person would.
dude give me more of those i woudle love to see a video about casca or about someonelse
@@pasiuq3444 great idea! And glad you're coming on the journey 🏆
Casca my fav character!!!
@@adriansigler9197 that's a great idea!
i think you could have mentioned one more scene where griffith tries to sleep with casca after he was rescued but couldn't
Great pick up. It actually was cut from one of my edits but I do think there is a lot to unpack in it. I plan to potentially reference it in a later berserk video. What do you think I should have covered about it in the content of this essay?
Never knew peak content till i watched this😊

@@grimalgram waiting for it chef
Griffith was awesome. He died in the dungeon. They got femto out of that dungeon imo
Just got my blu ray copy.
How does it compare?
@@grimalgram better than I thought. I've been waiting for a Blu ray release or a lower price on eBay. Thanks again Discotek.
Nice!!! Glad it lives up. Much extra content?
I just want situations and life. I don't have a dream
Some people are so fine just enjoying all the adventures life gives them, without having a main dream. You definately don't need one to have a happy life. Would you agree?
When we getting this eclipse video? We neeeeeed it
Part of me thinks that one should be ambitious like Griffith, however it seems as though Griffith went too far and ironically went outside of his dream to hurt Guts and Casca.
(like gaining money/power/land for the sake of having more)
Watching this made me wonder if Guts didn't leave the Hawks. Would the results have been the same....
There is this great argument I read which went into that concept. Do you think Guts staying would have changed the outcome thag much?
@@grimalgram My initial thoughts is because Griffith had the behilit, it was going to end in this manner one way or another. But, there is also a part of me in believing that Guts and Griffith together would’ve found a way to overcome this, just like the many battles they fought together. Like, defying their fate would’ve made for even more dramatic situation.
@@ACE2015 yeah I could totally see that happening, and would want to see that as a viewer too. Though in this dark anime, I think Miura would see it as an easy escape.

Glad you enjoyed it! If you want more berserk content check out my vid on guts
Well said 🏆
@@jpetrullo6890 it’s also due to the fact that out of the entirety of the band of the hawk guts is the only one who stands on his own. he doesn’t NEED griffith like the rest of the band does, he has a glowing respect for him yes but guts is completely self sufficient. griffith had to bargain to gain his following while the rest willingly followed. that attracts griffith because as one who is constantly ogled at to have one whose identity is separate from that makes guts more relatable and “equal” to griffith though he’d never admit it. kentarou was really a genius when it comes to character. they’re so complex and more importantly human, which brings them alive, they feel like real people to me. easily why it remains my favorite piece of literature ever.
@@jjizzler9592 because he see's guts is looking for his own dream. He gets offended because guts left instead of realizing they were his dream.
When you stop trying to force things. They will come to you.

Another reminder just because there’s a bromance doesn’t mean they are gay.
Haha true. Would you still say the same if Griffith was a women?
@@grimalgram Lol absolutely I’m dying on this hill
@@airbound1779 hahaha if you say so
Grifiths dreams are like a two sharped sword:
In the on hand you don’t want to hurt your family and friends and want that they joined your dream.
But on the other hand 😅 … i want to have the power rule the world and become a god. And not gonna lie the most of us would do the same like Griffith (don’t think i mean casca)
