Hey friends! First of all, thanks for all the comments and thumbs up! I've never had such a great amount of feedback! After the upload I noticed that RUclips does not support end screens in this format. I hope it will be updated... what do you think?
I am not sure. This has been like that for a very long time. If you want end screens (which are essential, in my opinion), you can go as far as 2:1 (ie 3840x1920), so that's your best bet.
For anyone that needs help remembering what to crop the video height to, just remember that in the year 1772, Catherine the Great ended the Beard Tax in Russia that had been set in place by Tsar Peter the Great in 1698. Until that point, police were empowered to shave people that hadn't paid the tax in public. Anyway, that's how I'm going to remember 3840 x 1772.
@@ultravioletron maybe to you. Some of us just need a simple reminder like the Russian Beard Tax that was in effect between 1698 and 1772 until it was ended by Catherine the Great.
@@brianmarkgriffinOf course. Not to mention, a year and a half before the more famous Boston Tea Party, the Gaspee Affair marked the first blow struck for American independence. The American Revolution began on the night of 10 June 1772 in the waters of coastal Rhode Island. Which would also help us remember about the aspect ratio.
@@ultravioletron ah, yes. Thank you. I had forgotten about this. I'm surprised he neglected to mention this in the video. Perhaps he will post an update.
I personally prefer a 2:1 aspect ratio, does have some black bars but it’s just big enough that it doesn’t intersect with the notch on my phone and fills the most amount of screen space as possible
I’ve always had to zoom into when watching RUclips videos to full grasp a good viewing experience and take out the black borders. However, certain parts of the videos gets cropped out. I’m glad you’re looking into easing that stress and improving our viewing experience.
The trade off is you’re giving so much quality in a few minutes it’s easy for us to just take the next step and sub or go look for the next video. It may not be as big of a drop off without the end screen as we might think. Also I’m sure eventually RUclips will catch on and let end screens be Avila me for this Aspect ratio as well.
I personally prefer 2:1 as my widest for mobile viewing as notches wont interfere with the video and it tends to be the widest aspect ratio without the rounded corners of your phone interfering either. But I hope it works out for you! One suggestion I do have, is if you think you may change your aspect ratio throughout your editing process, compose your shots with the widest aspect ratio and film in the fullest. That way there are no drawbacks to cropping your aspect ratio afterwards.
I was just working on this! Same conclusion! Awesome. You nailed it. I’ve always been bothered about having to zoom to fill and any little black bars on my phone have always bugged me. 1772. I’m with you.
I've got a Sony Xperia 5iii, and the aspect ratio is 21:9 - proper CinemaScope wide-screen, so its fantastic for films, but another really great feature is that you can split screen multitask with it - have two apps running side by side or one on top of the other in portrait mode. It makes casual viewing RUclips great as you can play a video and do other tasks at the same time. I often have RUclips open and my notes app below it, so I can make notes as I watch, all on the same screen. Great feature.
Watching on my S22 Ultra and I'm probably going to subscribe since I turned my phone to landscape and your video immediately filled the entire screen and I don't have to pinch and zoom! I'll likely use this advice to shoot as well! A thousand thanks!
How you only have 4300 subscribers is a mystery and tragedy. Your videos are excellent and your color scheme/style/branding/aesthetic is nothing short of fantastic. Very clean. Very professional. Very industrial and elegant simultaneously. Really well done........not that you needed me to tell you that.......because you already knew that.....
What a great idea. I tried it on my phone and I was like, WOW - it totally fills the screen and even has nice rounded corners. Not so great on PC, mind you, and you lose that top and bottom real-estate - but such is the compromise.
I think it's more than just content creators adjusting screen ratios, it's also making sure that whatever the shot is, it leaves a space for zooms and crops in mobile phones, no matter what model it is (could also be a 21:9 screen). That usually leaves your hair barely out of the shot, if at all. I think you're doing an excellent job 👏🏻👏🏻
Great! Looking at how the audience is watching your content is very good. I adapted 2:1 a while ago. I mean, it's the same with all the different speakers and displays, your video will be perceived different on every single device. But using the most popular displays and the iPhone is by far the most used phone in the world it's actually quite smart. Since I shoot in 4k DCI I will adjust it accordingly. It also gives you more of the cinematic look. I love playing around with aspect ratio and this will also encourage artist to use 4:3 more often.
P.s. I have since used these settings and love the fact you have the movement up and down to reframe! Shoot wider and this will change the way your videos look and you edit. Credit to you bro
I’ve got an idea, ignore TikTok and make using your phone in portrait mode illegal. They’ll use the 2/3rds of the wasted screen for advertising if we’re not careful!

I'm glad to see this, and I hope more people can join your idea as well. Is not bad in the laptop, and is simply delightful to consume media in the phone
Another point is that if you shoot anamorphic, you're pretty much bound to a wide aspect ratio as you capture the footage. No reason to shoot anamorphic and then just loose those sweet wide compositions for 16x9 output ratio. Great video!
This video randomly popped up in my feed, so I want to convey my thoughts a bit. The problem is that most smartphones in use are not at 19.5:9 ratio. Only the iPhones do - which constitute a _small_ percent of the total mobile usage. Most smartphones are at 20:9 aspect ratios. Now, what's the problem, you might ask? Well, it's that the video doesn't *fit* quite right. The black bars on the left and right are slim - yes - but they are also at an awkward position; stuck between completely filling the screen and not doing so. The video gets cut off by only 3/4s of the holepunch, and that's if the device doesn't have a waterdrop notch. I want to mention just how magnetising that awkward position was. Although the intention was better immersion, now the viewer's eye is drawn to how unbalanced the aspect ratio looks. And that will probably get a good dent in your viewership. Creators like Marques and Peter use the more standard 18:9 aspect ratio - it might not fit perfectly on an iPhone, but it fits *much better* overall when you consider the sheer vareity of screen sizes and aspect ratios. There's also Sam Beckman who has gone the other end and makes his videos at 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio. This actually plays into the different feeling thing for the average viewer, as they're only used to seeing a top and bottom black bar in movies. Pair that curious retention with a good production value - and you've got a hook.
I find the concept fascinating. It’s be very helpful if RUclips would also let us know in the analytics how many people look at the video in landscape vs portrait. And then from a stylistic choice and complexity: shooting even wider + also being able to do shorts. It’s wild what the range of aspect ratios are currently “needed”.
Thank you so much for the support! Yeah, the only thing is, you can't use end screens on this format, maybe RUclips will change that in the future...🤷🏻♂️
As others have said, the problem with this is that RUclips doesn’t allow end screens in anything other than 16:9 ratio, which is a shame. Great looking video by the way - clean setup. Nice.
@@J.K.productionsDEjust because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it isn't true ;-) Try it; a non 16:9 video will have the "end screen" option greyed out, and on hovering over it, it'll display a message "Your video has an unsupported aspect ratio".
16:9 with the new aspect ratio in mind is the best. Even if most users are on mobile, not everyone has the new aspect ratio on it. It’s the best leave that option to the viewer, so they have both, 16:9 or whatever wide phone it might be! You could put a tip on the beginning of the video mentioning that the video is ready to be cropped!
Great video, BUT SOMETHING IMPORTANT to notice is that RUclips won't let you customize the "End Screen" section, so you won't be able to promote any of your videos at the end. Even more important is that RUclips literally displays a "non valid aspect ratio" message when you try to customize this section, so maybe RUclips doesn't like that much this aspect ratio..
A lot of comments like "I prefer x:y..." but then you go to the channel and they doesn't have a single video uploaded. Record something, upload it and watch how your viewers react to it. Maybe they are writing from a different account but this is the perfect example of "people just wanna talk even if they doesn't have any knowledge about what they are saying".
Great video, thank you. I tried this after watching, and all I can add is if you want people to watch on their TVs or computers, then this resolution is a big no. I would add that if you produce in this resolution (1772) and show it on a phone, it's great, but on a computer monitor or TV is terrible, with black bars at the sides. If you produce in 16:9, then. yes, it's not full screen on a phone, but you at least do not get black on the sides. It's the better workaround, in my humble opinion, after trying it.
Sean Kitching made a video addressing the same issue highlighting that if we film and post 21:9 we lose the yt end card feature. which I found out the hard way haha. Sean suggested using 16x9 at 3840x1920 but I appreciate this video as well because phones are very wide the 19x9 I think may be better at least imo

Definitely not a new thing like you mentioned, but I think it makes more sense now as platforms like TikTok are promoting long form horizontal video to try and combat the YT giant. Gonna try this out. Thanks!
This applies to shorts as well, the vertical 4K gets cut off on the sides, i use an overlay template in premiere pro to show what area is cut off or blocked on shorts on mobile so nothing important gets cut off or blocked, but i think i am going to change the 1920 to 1772 on my vertical format also so it is not cropped. Hmm... Considering films will often shoot in 21:9, it's actually going to give you a more cinematic experience if its slightly wider, so yeah... This makes sense. Thanks for giving the crop res for 4k 😁
It is like in the movie theatre when the shades on the side of the screen open to the 18:9 aspect ratio from the traditional movie AR. I always wanted a screen that would mechanically change aspect ratios. 😊
This is great but when you use 3840 x 1772 you can't add end screens to your YT Videos... It's greyed out and shows the message, "Your video has an unsupported aspect ratio." So something to bare in mind. There must be a very similar ratio to this that works because MKBHD uses the same format and still has end screens
Looks great on iPhone, surprisingly so. Watched this again on Apple TV @4k and the black bars and bottom doesn’t look too bad. You almost expect black bars on the big screen more so than on your phone.
The future of video content could be a way to figure out responsive video layouts that adapt to screen size. Although there would be some technical advancements needed to get this across the line. When faced with the same issue, web developers solved this with the creation of responsive layouts (With CSS) to adapt websites to scale across all screen aspect ratios.
This is a great point Max, However we shouldn't go all in for it. I believe in the next years RUclips will increase the % of television and computer viweres. Also, we could use Marques Brownlee example and find a middle term, where we still have a bigger spectrum of images for bigger screens and adapted to small screens. It also allows us to put subtitles in the dark spaces while keeping a great aesthetic in fullscreen and adaption to all screens. The resolution in this vídeo is excellent for people who really watches in cinema mode and phone, but It is too much for people who watches fullscreen or television. I would love to see statistics about users % using fullscreen, cinema mode, screen in screen!! Great Vídeo, keep up!
I tried it, because it seams to be very good IDEA, films looks OK, special on mobile --- BUT --- you can't add finishing title at the end.. So, keep that in mind Ps MKHB has different video size, the same PM and they have ending screen 😢
usually video editing premiere pro 1080p what is my sequence setting should be ? I want to make video ratio like you and I like this aspect ratio please use in every video
18:9 is more commonly preferred, since it stops right before the camera notch, which most find annoying. 18:9 ratio pixel counts below 👇🏽 *1080p:* 1920 x 960 *2k:* 2560 x 1280 *4k:* 3840 x 1920 It's as wide as you can get on newer phones without the width reaching the camera notch. Personally, it's annoying & distracting when i have the notch covering a bit of my video, and I've heard the same from plenty of people. Taking away that extra little 0.5 of the width is barely noticeable, which means you still get the benefit of using most of the extra wide screen on mobile devices without seeing the notch/camera cutout.
hi man, you have some sick colour correction and colour grading look and channel styling. That's dope man. Could you please start a playlist about channel styling, achieving the same colour look in every video? The dark look in your videos is killing man 🔥
Unfortunately for this aspect ratio RUclips doesn't allow you to add a end screens, this is huge downside for me unfortunately, am going to have to go back to 2.1 which is not so bad after all

i like this, fills my ultrawide a bit more
This is great but when you use 3840 x 1772 you can't add end screens to your YT Videos... It's greyed out and shows the message, "Your video has an unsupported aspect ratio." So something to bare in mind. There must be a very similar ratio to this that works because MKBHD uses the same format and still has end screens
Your video ratio is a perfect fit 🔥😍
Love this idea!
I’m in. Great tip. I’ll update my template now. 🍻
dude! i love your colors!
Best aspect ratio
God I loved this tutorial. Thank you. 🙏
AMAZING! Gonna do this way from now on
Pretty damn cool gotta try it!
✌️😎
This is actually so cool! I did not notice but did notice it at the same time lol
The thumbnail just made me to subscribe
Also, we could use Marques Brownlee
example and find a middle term, where we still have a bigger spectrum of images for bigger screens and adapted to small screens.
Bro thanks alot men
That's so much valuable
My day was worth after knowing this
I tried it, because it seams to be very good IDEA, films looks OK, special on mobile --- BUT --- you can't add finishing title at the end..
So, keep that in mind
Ps MKHB has different video size, the same PM and they have ending screen 😢
Looks amazing on the 13 pro max
Yeah! I love it too!
usually video editing premiere pro
1080p
what is my sequence setting should be ?
I want to make video ratio like you
and I like this aspect ratio please use in every video
That's like asking someone how much sugar should you put in YOUR coffee.
Ig it will be 1920 x 910
1920x886
That’s awesome, thanks so much!
What is the aspect ration for filming 1080p (hd) and not 4k if you want the full screen affect? Still 3840 x 1772?
I guess 1920 x 884.
Good idea. Will take this to the clients choices. 😊
my phone's 21:9 aspect ratio likes this video very much
We need more of this, or youtube could program it to be dynamic
This is a cool idea. Thank you for sharing the dimensions, I’m going to give this a try. Cheers🎉
mega Tipp, danke Max!
18:9 is more commonly preferred, since it stops right before the camera notch, which most find annoying. 18:9 ratio pixel counts below 👇🏽
*1080p:* 1920 x 960
*2k:* 2560 x 1280
*4k:* 3840 x 1920
It's as wide as you can get on newer phones without the width reaching the camera notch.
Nah just buy a phone without broken notch or hole. Story ends
@@fantasytky28 Too limiting & exclusive. Inclusive is better.
i like 2:1. wider but cut out the dynamic island or camera holes
doesn't the dynamic island cut halfway into the video?
@@danielschroder2725 2:1 shows no dynamic island on my iphone 15 pro max screen
hi man, you have some sick colour correction and colour grading look and channel styling. That's dope man. Could you please start a playlist about channel styling, achieving the same colour look in every video? The dark look in your videos is killing man 🔥
But the only problem is we can't add end screen in end of our video if we do 21:9
Really?
Yep! I just realised that while uploading... I hope YT will change that in the future...
@@maxsautner I am waiting for this change from last 2 years 😂😂
@@Creative.visionzz Yess
Lovely stuff
Thanks Max, subscribed.
Unfortunately for this aspect ratio RUclips doesn't allow you to add a end screens, this is huge downside for me unfortunately, am going to have to go back to 2.1 which is not so bad after all
