It can if people actually do the math and use custom dimensions settings on their video projects. I would do it that way, but I've found that RUclips doesn't recognize aspect ratios over 18:9. It'll still let you upload them and display them, but a lot of functions like end screens, info cards, etc. won't be available. I hear ya though!

For some people vertical video might be great for their iPhones and somewhat, but it never look good on television and I hate seeing it on my TV. If anyone going to provide footage for the news, please for the love of God hold your phone horizontally before hitting record!
The nice thing about longer screens on newer some newer phones like the note 9 (my new fav phone) is that either there is black edges for things that don't fit the full long screen in full screen or it is like in netflix were it is croped to fit but not super croped in which is fine for me and I think that is nice instead of things being streached which would look not as good to me. You could also go into split screen mode on note 9s which I think I'd cool sometimes. Yes Aspect Ratio is the size of the screen and resolution is the quality. Thanks for the video.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! I know what you mean by shooting the wrong aspect ratio by mistake! I'd just post what you have and keep on making more footage. Unless it's something that needs to go into a larger project that is all in a different aspect ratio.
Actually, I am searching for explanation for why 1:1 ratio becomes popular nowadays especially in social medias. The closest I find it is because Instagram in early days force you to upload videos and pics in 1:1 ratio and I think that's why it becomes popular. Video with 1:1 usually has caption in the top and bottom of the video.
Helpful video! However, I'm still a little confused as to how to fill the screen. I've tried using 16:9 and even tried custom dimensions but I keep getting the letter box. Any tips?
It depends on the screen you're watching on. A phone screen has different dimensions from a computer monitor or a laptop screen. Different devices will display the same aspect ratio with different size letter boxes depending on the screen size.
this is really so informative but i need your help with something. i saw a youtube video which was odd for me because if you watch it without full screen, the video is cut from the sides and surprisingly YT also cut the sides and didnt fill it with the black box on sides. i really need your help with this because im stuck in finding an answer from a week
if you watch it full screen you can see the black space on both sides but if you watch it in normal window , there is no black space. YT allowed it somehow idk how you can do this
I watched initially on my computer, and it had the pillar boxes regardless of how I watched. But I'm assuming you're watching from your phone because I switched to my phone and can now see how it fills the whole screen when the phone is upright and has the pillar boxes when I turn it. I'm guessing it's a 1:1 aspect ratio because what happens is that the black space is automatically generated by the viewer depending on how you have your screen rotated. If the person put 1:1 footage in a 16:9 timeline, then it would have the black space regardless of how you watched. But if you actually set the timeline to 1:1 (3840x3840 for 4K or 1920x1920 for FHD) then it will only have the black space automatically generated by your video player when you watch on a widescreen view.
@@CamberFilmSchool I hear you. Thanks a lot for looking it out for me. 💯% agreed. But my question is when you watch it on your PC in normal view (without full screen) and you see there is white empty space around the video. That is unclickable part. I tried uploading the video in same way but YT automatically creates a white part for me which is clickable and a part of my video. In this case of this video it's something that YT maybe missed it or it's a different concept. I hope you're getting me. I want to upload a video like that
I prefer to watch in 16:9 ratio only coz it fills the complete TV screen, the total money spent on TV display will be used properly (not with black borders), i feel obligated to watch movies with borders. correct me if am wrong (sorry for my bad english)
What about 2:1? For me it's the best compromise of all. Not overly exaggerated in width while keeping a fair amount of vertical content . I've been adopting it for some years now. I shoot in 3:4 and then crop 2:1 in post. Adding to this, in 16:9 displays the resulting horizontal black bars are also significantly reduced, which produces a very comfortable viewing experience. I find it odd that this AR is very rarely considered mentioned in literature. I wonder why. What do you think?
Because it hasn’t been commonly used until recently. I have a separate video I made on it after this one, and I’ve also been using 2:1 in most of my videos for the past 4 years.

You're absolutely right I'm wanting the 2.3 5, how do you do that in premiere? Just want to make sure I do it right in you write down step by step instructions for me and I really appreciate you by the way you were really helpful
I use Final Cut Pro, so I can't give you any detailed info on how to set things up in premiere. But there are two main ways to get the 2.35:1 or 21:9 aspect ratio for your video. You can either just set you project dimensions at 16:9 (1920x1080 for HD) and add the letterboxing to your video (which you can find downloads for letterboxes at all kinds of video resolutions like HD, 4K, 8K, etc.) The other way would be to set your project dimensions to 21:9 by manually setting the pixels to 1920x864 for HD. then you would just move your 16:9 footage around within that 21:9 aspect ratio project file to get it framed how you want within those dimensions. 👍🏼
@@CamberFilmSchool and one more question. why there is so much different sequences settings. for example some people say 815, 803, 822, i know said use 817 i was just wondering. it has me confuse as to the one to use, not doubting you by any means?
@@lionroots11, it's simply a math problem. If you are trying to do 21:9 aspect ratio then you take the width, which is 1920 for FHD and divide it by 21 (which is 91.43) and then you multiply that by 9 ( which is 822.86) to get your height. The different numbers are based on how and when people round the 91.43 before multiplying by 9. I just did 91x9 which ends up being 819. Not sure why I put 817, but when counting by a few pixels, there really isn't much difference.
Hahaha you are the only one! But you are absolutely correct, i've never though of it that way either. I prefer 16:9, which is why i bought an old smart phone just week ago instead of a new one with stupid cinematic ratio.
Kind of depends on the feel you are going for with the video. I've done most at 16:9 and some one also at 4:3. I'm starting to make most of my videos now at 18:9 because it fills up the most space on smart phones now (gonna make a video on that soon). Can you tell me more about what kind of music video it is?
@@lionroots11, if you're wanting to get the 21:9 aspect ratio, there are two different ways to do it. You can just do you normal project in 16:9 that your camera puts out and add the black bars for the 21:9 ratio (you can find lots of downloads for your editing program if you google it). One thing to keep in mind with this is that you need to make sure to use the right size depending on what resolution (1080p or 4K) or else it won't work right. The other way is to actually set your project dimensions to 21:9 (2520x1080) for HD and resize your clips in editing.
Please look slightly below the aperture of the camera. Doing so prevents your light source bouncing into the camera; it also makes the viewer more comfortable.
Anyone is free to disagree all they want but - - - 16:10 / 8:5 will forever be on top for me. Edit: Also 18:9 is just 2:1. It was definitely tested somewhere in the past. But I have yet to see content / media feature it.
Cool! I just started using 18:9 recently for my RUclips videos since it fills more of the screen on smartphones. 19.5:9 actually stretches to the ends of the screen on the new iPhones, but RUclips doesn't recognize that aspect ratio and won't allow you to use all the video features like end screens and cards.
Vertical video shows that the cameraman is inept. Every time I see any youtube video shot that way I yell at the monitor, "Idiot, hold the phone horizontally, you fool". If two videos of the same historic event show up in a newsroom, one vertical and the other horizontal, which one do you think is going on air? Here's a clue, the correct answer starts with the letter "H". This is so far from rocket science, that what can you say. Maybe we need TVs that auto-rotate. Practice doing this right, you'll get the hang of it.
What about when you are just trying to watch videos. Had full screen and it just changed and now I have black bars on either side of the videos I am trying to watch. How can I get rid of the black bars on my computer. I'm not making videos, just watching. Everything has gone black. The bars on either side and the bar across the top where you can scroll down to your subscriptions.
There are three different options for RUclips video sizes when watching. There’s the default, theater mode, and full screen. But how much of the black bars you see depends on the aspect ratio of the video that the person uploaded. It they uploaded 16:9, then it’ll probably take up all of your computer screen. But if it’s a 21:9 video then there will be black bars on the top and bottom. You can’t control that.
Awesome!!! We always learn something NEW every time we your videos! But i have a quick question and i really can't find the answer anywhere...maybe its under my nose but JUST cant see the answer??? By chance do you know what is the best aspect ratio RESOLUTION for RUclips shorts??? i know if your filming for Tiktok its best to film in aspect ratio of @ (Portrait) in 480x852 reg or 720x480 high resolution and in frame rate of 29.99 but does this apply with youtube shorts? Sometimes my RUclips shorts come out a little grainy.
Watched your vid and everything was explained very well. But I have a question what aspect ratio suits for Instagram (IGTV) especially if I was working on a Montage (iPad)
I need help!!!! I want to do a multi-screen music video like you see a lot today due to the covid-19 pandemic. I'm using Adobe Premire 2020 for this. I have all the videos. They fluctuate between having 14 musicians to 19 musicians performing all at onced. My questions is what would be the size of "each musician (square)," in my 1920h x 1080 w screen? Help???
Hey, Manny. Yea, that can definitely be a pain to do. For the 14 people, I think you'd need to do about 275x78 to get 7 even boxes across the top and 7 on the bottom. I'm not sure how you'd do it with 19 because you can divide that evenly.
@@CamberFilmSchoolHi Camber, I worked it and just by trial and error I was able to at least understand how to go about it. I started by reducing the picture by 50%, that allowed me to have 4 musicians in the 1080 dpi screen. Then I created 10 28% boxes for the other 10 musicians and it along with two other 50% but cropped boxes. If you were to ask me how I figured out, I could not tell you but a little bit of your box prespective helped me. I'll be happy to send you a final picture of it. My email is mannycepeda@hotmail.com if you have any more good advice for me. The learning experice is going to help me finish up the video of the band performing. Best Regards.
@@CamberFilmSchool I still dont quite understand how the ratio work but if anyone can chime in on different ways to do it when you are dealing with video editing and placing many boxes in a 1080 dp screen or even a 4k would be amazing help for the future!😊
Manny Cepeda, yea it’s hard to give you numbers to use when not actually there working on it. It’ll just take a lot of messing around and adjusting to make stuff look right.
I prefer 21:9 ratio because it has more space to keep the on-screen keyboard and web content all in one screen in portrait position and it is a movie standard ratio in landscape position. Furthermore, you can split screen into 16:9 at upper and 9:16 at bottom of the screen, upper player video bottom read website or 50:50 for 2 apps same screen, which is very useful because you no need to jump apps by turn. Not only that, you can capture movie style video because it is 21:9 ratio and totally fit the screen nicely and capture group photo/tree building things with much wider/taller view of fields. Finally, if above no a great design please remember a phone mostly grasp by one hand, and 21:9 ratio has slimmer width which is very nice to grasp compare to those chubby one!

@@CamberFilmSchool Thanks. However, I can't easily access the subject again and I'm trying to edit it. I don't know what aspect ratio to use. What do you suggest?
stonybrookfinearts, if you did vertical video then there isn’t really much you can change after the fact. If you tried to change it to a horizontal aspect ratio then you’d lose most of your footage.
This video is very helpful but also a little confusing since you could buy a 20" tv in say 1080p or a 40" tv also in 1080p or whatever other resolution you want.. To me, it all comes down to pixel density.. Obviously the pixel density of the 20" tv would be twice as great so the picture quality would be much better (though I don't think you could say twice as good since there are diminishing the higher the resolution number go)
Or it could be that you are looking at the same amount of pixels but they are bigger pixels on the larger screen. A cell phone can shoot 4K just like a full frame camera like the FX3, but the bigger sensor on the camera provides a better picture because each pixel can take in more light and give better information.
What aspect ratio do you prefer? Let me know! 👇🏻

Insane you have replied to every single comment.
Trying to keep it real, bro! 👍🏽
Thank you for this... it was awesome. As a new content creator, I really needed this.
You're welcome, Pam 👍🏼 Glad it was helpful!
2:44 Well you know, my tablet that I got a *few years ago* its screen is 16cm by 12cm which simplifies to 4:3
Cool!
Thanks for this tutorial - I am a newbie trying to learn the ropes with Filmora 9.5.
You’re welcome! 👍🏾
I can't be the only one who gets annoyed by the term 21:9. It should be 7:3. If it's 4:3 and not 12:9, it should be 7:3.
You know, I've never really thought about it that way! THat's a good point.
Hahaha you are the only one! But you are absolutely correct, i've never though of it that way either. I prefer 16:9, which is why i bought an old smart phone just week ago instead of a new one with stupid cinematic ratio.
Imu Lippo cool!
Think it as this way-
4:3
4²:3² = 16:9
4³:3³=64:27 which is actually 21:9
😂 Abdul Hasib Tamim, nice! 👍🏽
Thanks, i enjoyed the video!
which aspect ratio do you use?
Thanks! This video was 16:9
Yeah, I don't like how TV treats one aspect ratio as a 'One Size Fits All' aspect ratio without realising that different shows have different needs.
Yea.
Wow, your videos are amazing at teaching people. I love the picture examples when you speak. Great for slow learners like me lol. Thank you😁
Glad to help! 😉
the best, well explained, well presented video about aspect ratios and resolutions, one like and one sub from me :)
Thanks so much, Ubosh 👍🏽 I appreciate that!
Wicth one would you recommend for music video?
Kind of depends on the feel you are going for with the video. I've done most at 16:9 and some one also at 4:3. I'm starting to make most of my videos now at 18:9 because it fills up the most space on smart phones now (gonna make a video on that soon). Can you tell me more about what kind of music video it is?
@@CamberFilmSchool thanks for getting back with me, its a hiphop video
@@CamberFilmSchool trying to achieve the black box thecright way, to get the cenimac look
@@CamberFilmSchool Thank you brother
My favourite aspect ratio is 16:9. But I do like 21:9 too.
Cool!
Thanks for explaing that aspect ratio isn't physical size exactly the answer I was looking for 😄
No problem. 👍
Thank you! This video has completely saved me, I'm uploading an animation today and almost made it in 4:3 😅
Great to hear, Confetti Koala 👍🏼GLad to help!
Please look slightly below the aperture of the camera. Doing so prevents your light source bouncing into the camera; it also makes the viewer more comfortable.
First person I’ve heard that one from.
21:9 - Theater
4:3 - Crap Vid
9:16 - “Portrait”
16:9 - “Landscape”
KasualKev, sounds about right! 👍🏽
:)
Also today my birthday
Sweet, KasualKev ! 🎉 Happy Birthday!!
Thanks :)
What about 20:9 ???? Hahaha
Anyone is free to disagree all they want but - - -
16:10 / 8:5 will forever be on top for me.
😂 I hear ya!
I have the worst aspect ratio (16:10) for both of the screens that I use, one of them is 1366x768 and the other is 1440x900.
That stinks!

You never mentioned 14:9. I heard that crop up somewhere in TV.
There are many other aspect ratios. I was only talking about the most common ones that you see.
I think the real base is 4:3.I mean in phones camera because for example the iPhone has 12mp ( 4032x3024) and videos are cropped into

Aspect Size for RUclips SHORTS.
Thank You For Making Good Videos !
Glad to help! 😉
@@CamberFilmSchool Gotta It! I hate not having control! 🤣 Thanks for the reply!

I’ve been using 1080x1920 for FHD vertical resolutions for my RUclips shorts.
thank you! this did help a lot!
Glad to help! 👍
Watched your vid and everything was explained very well. But I have a question what aspect ratio suits for Instagram (IGTV) especially if I was working on a Montage (iPad)
1:1 is the best for IG since it automatically makes everything square.
Even tho it's an old video. It explains thank you

Would you advise buying a laptop with 15:9 display ratio?
If the laptop meets your needs then get whatever kind you like. You can still make videos in whatever aspect ratio you want.

Awesome, Manny 👍🏼 GLad you were able to get it working!
Great info.. is the 16:9 the one I have to use for youtube videos? GmaJo
16:9 is the standard that all cameras record and is what most people use for RUclips.
What do you think of 2.5:1 aspect ratio (diamond ratio)?
Opio 92, dunno. Don’t have any experience with it yet.
Thank u. I would love to learn more from you and become famous in the future.
No problem! 👍 Good luck.
Well thats what I was looking for really informative thank you ..
Great 👍🏼Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video. What did you use to downgrade the footage you shot to make it look like SD?
I just shrank it to 11% of the original size of the 4K clip.
Good points!
for youtube video ?
21.9 ratio??
@@yashpurty4410 21:9 is the best! Cinematic experience! Plus scroll less when reading comments, I also love the the full screen mode display with the comment sections at the same time
I don't see other smartphone with 20:9 or 18:9.... screen ratio can fit it in 16:9 video. When it is movie 21:9 is wonderful to watching. While the others smartphone with 20:9 , 18:9 screen...not so good.
You could, but you won’t be able to use end screens.
It all depends on what type of video you’re making too. Not everything looks better in 21:9

I enjoyed your video! I recently took a video using my android vertically. What aspect ratio should I use for this? Thank you!
stonybrookfinearts, the only thing I’d use vertical video for is something like Facebook or instagram.
A cell phone can shoot 4K just like a full frame camera like the FX3, but the bigger sensor on the camera provides a better picture because each pixel can take in more light and give better information.
how did you add those guide lines on the sony camera? 😊
I mapped it as a custom button, but I believe it’s listed in the menu as “marker display” and you can choose where you want the crop lines to be.
I’m making an ARG (Alternate Reality Game) and most of them are in 4:3 so thanks for the help !!
You’re welcome. 👍
In 18:9 it crop automatic because its better for new phones like IPhone X and Samsung GalaxyS10
