It’s crazy you made this 5 yrs ago and talked about vertical video being unlikely and now I’m literally watching this to learn how to make vertical video for TikTok lol
It can if people actually do the math and use custom dimensions settings on their video projects. I would do it that way, but I've found that RUclips doesn't recognize aspect ratios over 18:9. It'll still let you upload them and display them, but a lot of functions like end screens, info cards, etc. won't be available. I hear ya though!
I started making videos of some of my DIY projects, had no idea what aspect ratio was until now. I am sure it will improve my videos. I will definitely check out some of your other videos. Thanks
For some people vertical video might be great for their iPhones and somewhat, but it never look good on television and I hate seeing it on my TV. If anyone going to provide footage for the news, please for the love of God hold your phone horizontally before hitting record!
Awesome job man! Your channel is def gonna blow up. Solid video with a "NoNonsense" vibe to it! I mistakenly shot a video on my GoPro in 4:3 and now im torn if I should post it or re shoot. Thanks for the great info. Just subbed. Where you from? Anywhere near the Philly area?
Thanks so much, I really appreciate that! I know what you mean by shooting the wrong aspect ratio by mistake! I'd just post what you have and keep on making more footage. Unless it's something that needs to go into a larger project that is all in a different aspect ratio.
Actually, I am searching for explanation for why 1:1 ratio becomes popular nowadays especially in social medias. The closest I find it is because Instagram in early days force you to upload videos and pics in 1:1 ratio and I think that's why it becomes popular. Video with 1:1 usually has caption in the top and bottom of the video.
The nice thing about longer screens on newer some newer phones like the note 9 (my new fav phone) is that either there is black edges for things that don't fit the full long screen in full screen or it is like in netflix were it is croped to fit but not super croped in which is fine for me and I think that is nice instead of things being streached which would look not as good to me. You could also go into split screen mode on note 9s which I think I'd cool sometimes. Yes Aspect Ratio is the size of the screen and resolution is the quality. Thanks for the video.
Hi first thanks for the video, it’s great specially when you talked about vertical filming as I’m one big fan of vertical filming, I use 9:16 ratio and it’s so confusing how some of my fans like it and how some others don’t. 16:9 only and forever vs. portrait. I cannot stand to view a still portrait let alone a portrait video, even when I turn my head horizontal. No problem with old pictures that 126 film made square. We used what we had. Thank you for the easy explanation Camber Motion.👍👍👍

Yeah, most cameras only shoots 16:9 so you have to crop to whatever aspect ratio you want to use if other than 16:9 in post. Glad I was able to make sense of it for you!
Helpful video! However, I'm still a little confused as to how to fill the screen. I've tried using 16:9 and even tried custom dimensions but I keep getting the letter box. Any tips?
It depends on the screen you're watching on. A phone screen has different dimensions from a computer monitor or a laptop screen. Different devices will display the same aspect ratio with different size letter boxes depending on the screen size.
Hahaha you are the only one! But you are absolutely correct, i've never though of it that way either. I prefer 16:9, which is why i bought an old smart phone just week ago instead of a new one with stupid cinematic ratio.
Please look slightly below the aperture of the camera. Doing so prevents your light source bouncing into the camera; it also makes the viewer more comfortable.
Vertical video shows that the cameraman is inept. Every time I see any youtube video shot that way I yell at the monitor, "Idiot, hold the phone horizontally, you fool". If two videos of the same historic event show up in a newsroom, one vertical and the other horizontal, which one do you think is going on air? Here's a clue, the correct answer starts with the letter "H". This is so far from rocket science, that what can you say. Maybe we need TVs that auto-rotate. Practice doing this right, you'll get the hang of it.
Thank you bro!i am new to the channel, great tutorial! I just can't decide if go for the classic 16:9 or try a cinematic look for my last prject. I think I m gonna do both and decide wich one will look better later.
Hey man, glad that it was helpful! Sounds like a good plan. That's the great thing about 16:9. You can go either way in the end. What kind of project is it?
My favorite aspect ratios are 2.00:1, for its balance between characters and environment, as well as horizontal and vertical scale in general; and the other would be the perhaps never used 2.10:1, for the simple fact that it is in the exact middle ground between the traditional 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 Regardless, I like anything from 1.85 to 2.39. I just don't like very narrow ratios, like the terrible 1.33, which screams "environment why"? And I also don't like the exaggeratedly wide ones, like the 2.76. The first is a tight box with almost no panorama and the second, as it is excessively wide, visibly loses in height. Summary: The best range of aspect ratios for me is 1.85:1 to 2.39:1 (and especially 2.00:1 and the "platonic" 2.10:1).
I've noticed when I watch something in 4:3 aspect ratio on my iPad it actually fills up the entire screen. I have actually been beginning to miss this aspect ratio even more recently
Anyone is free to disagree all they want but - - - 16:10 / 8:5 will forever be on top for me. Edit: Also 18:9 is just 2:1. It was definitely tested somewhere in the past. But I have yet to see content / media feature it.
Cool! I just started using 18:9 recently for my RUclips videos since it fills more of the screen on smartphones. 19.5:9 actually stretches to the ends of the screen on the new iPhones, but RUclips doesn't recognize that aspect ratio and won't allow you to use all the video features like end screens and cards.
I appreciate your reply. Thanks. Before my question I had tried the controls on the monitor to no avail. Later I booted up and with the desktop visible, the monitor then shows its menu! There was an aspect setting for 4:3!!! I tried it and it worked. Problem now solved. Thanks again.
This video is very helpful but also a little confusing since you could buy a 20" tv in say 1080p or a 40" tv also in 1080p or whatever other resolution you want.. To me, it all comes down to pixel density.. Obviously the pixel density of the 20" tv would be twice as great so the picture quality would be much better (though I don't think you could say twice as good since there are diminishing the higher the resolution number go)
Or it could be that you are looking at the same amount of pixels but they are bigger pixels on the larger screen. A cell phone can shoot 4K just like a full frame camera like the FX3, but the bigger sensor on the camera provides a better picture because each pixel can take in more light and give better information.
I prefer 21:9 ratio because it has more space to keep the on-screen keyboard and web content all in one screen in portrait position and it is a movie standard ratio in landscape position. Furthermore, you can split screen into 16:9 at upper and 9:16 at bottom of the screen, upper player video bottom read website or 50:50 for 2 apps same screen, which is very useful because you no need to jump apps by turn. Not only that, you can capture movie style video because it is 21:9 ratio and totally fit the screen nicely and capture group photo/tree building things with much wider/taller view of fields. Finally, if above no a great design please remember a phone mostly grasp by one hand, and 21:9 ratio has slimmer width which is very nice to grasp compare to those chubby one!
