So I've been recording in 4K(30frames) to be safe. Question, am I right in thinking that I'm future proofing my videos, since quality on all devices will only get better over time? Or will it never make a difference on phones and tablets? In any case, I like that my vids will have the best current quality on 4K TV's. But it does take a ton of space. Surprisingly enough, my iPad Pro can handle it well, I've editing up to 45min of 4K with two tracks with almost no hiccups. I just offload the vids to an external afterwards.
*I shoot in 4K always but Render it to 1080 at 60 because Myself am Aware that not everyone can afford a 4K Machine BUT...rendering it down to 1080 still gives it that 4K look*
Pro tip: Export your 1080p videos in adobe with 4k settings. RUclips will think it's a larger file and compress it less, retaining more quality. Creative Ryan did a video on this a while back.
I was filming EVERYTHING in 4K and literally had an epiphany one day cause I could NOT figure out why my clips were taking up so much space on my Mac. Switched to 1080 with minimal if not ANY loss in quality and increased my filming capacity and storage in my Mac. Changed my life 😂 Might seem simple to those of you who are tech savvy but for me I’m very much still learning and this was a big deal 😂 🤷♀️🙏 Think Media videos have been KEY in my development as a creator and I absolutely thrive with editing and filming now because of it. That was definitely the position we were in when our new Sony Camera came in. Such huge file sizes. But! I would highly recommend grabbing a Sandisk SSD to work off of as opposed to working off of the mac. Even with smaller file sizes, video takes up a TON of space on Mac, and I was so tired of seeing "your disk is almost full" that the $80 investment for a SSD has been so amazingly worth it!

Hey Lena, what do you think about subscribe to each other's channel and that way support each other? Giving shout out, tips that will us improve etc. Cheers.
I recommend shooting in whatever the highest resolution the technology that you own for your workflow will allow. if you have a computer that can't handle 4k (which is fewer and farther between these days honestly, particularly with the gpu doing a ton of the encoding and decoding work now), shoot in 1080. have a camera that only shoots in 1080p? shoot in 1080p (don't bother spending a ton of cash on new equipment if what you have works fine for what you do)... HOWEVER if your camera can shoot in 4k and your computer can handle rendering these files, I strongly recommending to shoot in 4k (even if the monitor on your computer doesn't support 4k) because A. it gives you significantly higher quality output for displays that do support 4k if you target 4k exports OR if you target 1080p exports it gives you not only he ability to crop in if you choose, but it gives you the option to completely re-frame shots in post which can be super easy. in fact, one trick i learned is that if you shoot a 2-person interview wide with a 4k camera, you can cheat a little bit and get 3 seperate high quality shots out of the deal (wide, close-up person a, and close-up of person b) all without losing hardly any resolution at all if you're targeting 1080p. further if you straight-up have bad frame composition when you shoot because you don't have control of the situation (stuff like live interviews) - if you shoot it a bit wide with a 4k camera, you can totally re-frame the shot in post, linking people up on the rule of thirds lines, or taking the portion of a shot you want and putting a digital overlay, or a digital background behind them... the sky is the limit - the more resolution you have to begin with, the less you lose if you choose to re-frame... and lastly, you get significantly fewer compression artifacts when you take 4k footage and compress it down to 1080p than you do when you take 1080p footage and compress it to 1080p in your post production workflow/editing. you usually get better color rendition, and a sharper looking export when you come from a situation where you have more visual information for those compression algorithms to work with. sure, it takes more computer power to make that happen, but it looks better in the long run. Personally I just watched this video at 4k on my 40" 4k computer monitor and I really appreciate it when my favorite content creators have made the transition to 4k, but I also realize that i'm something of a minority when it comes to 4k viewership as you pointed out in the video, most people are watching at 1080p. But for those who are viewing on a large 4k screen (such as on a smart tv or using a games console or other media device, or casting from a phone to the tv, or have a large 4k computer monitor) there is significant benefit for shooting and targeting 4k. On the other hand, some of this also comes down to the type of content that you're shooting. if you're a tv show fan channel and the highest quality you can get the show in is 1080p and you're showing clips and screenshots, it doesn't really make sense to make your camera footage 4k (unless you want to re-frame) as it doesn't matter how pretty your video is if your other sources are significantly lower quality. or if you're mostly doing a small frame picture in picture with a high quality secondary source (such as a weatherperson might read a weathermap) so the content itself may dictate how you shoot. lastly and most importantly, I want to make absolutely clear that it doesn't matter what your video looks like if your audio is poor. you can shoot at 320x240 and make great content if you have a decent audio workflow (mic and dac). if people can hear you clearly with high quality and you speak well, people will readily forgive substandard looking video. some folks I watch target 720p still and their content is largely educational in nature and doesn't really need high resolution to get the point across... they have good quality microphone setups and they make fantastic content. - at any point in your media creation journey you stop and think to yourself "i've got a little bit of additional capital to invest in this venture, where should i spend it to make the most impact" - lots of people would think to upgrade to a 4k camera or a fancier camera. I say NO. instead, look at making your audio the best it can be. look at microphones, lav mics, shotgun mics, dynamic mics, stands, dacs, learn about the differences between different mic setups and find something that fits your workflow to make you and/or your guests sound awesome. following that, lighting. an old lower resolution camera (even a webcam) with great lighting is generally going to look WAY better than even a high-end professional hollywood video camera with poor lighting - and lighting is usually pretty inexpensive. - get yourself a softbox or two, or an led video light or two, learn a little bit about cinematography and different strategies to light talent. this will allow you to use the equipment you have already be it a pro movie camera, a dslr/mirrorless camera, a webcam, or even your phone more efficiently and get the best out of every shot.
There’s one thing you should mention when it comes to RUclips and particularly new, small channels: you should upload in at least 1440. Why? Because only then RUclips will give you the vp9 codec which has a superior playback image quality. With 1080 you’ll only get the avc codec. Therefore it’s better to shoot 4K or upscale your 1080 footage to 1440. I wish I knew that when I started. Greetings from Germany.
Could you upload in 1080 and wait until you grow your channel and get a 4K camera before uploading in 1440 or 4k to get the codec? Can you still get RUclips to give you the codec after your channel has grown?
I love this YT channel! It has greatly reduced my learning curve with starting my channel and creating better content. 🙌🏾💪🏾 I shoot in 1080 for the smaller file size, just as you suggested. QUESTION. Correct me if I’m wrong here,....but isn’t there two different codecs for RUclips videos: a higher quality and a lower quality (more compressed, lower resolution). For videos uploaded in 4K, RUclips assigns it the higher quality codec. Most screens can’t see a resolution difference between 1080p and 4K, but can definitely see the quality difference in these codecs. I know this was true last year. Has RUclips changed this? THANK YOU THINKMEDIA FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS!!! Great channel.
Another great video, thank you for sharing. I shoot all my videos in 1080p, it is a lot easier to edit a 1080p rather than a 4K video. I have thought of 4K but it seems to work with me. I like the crop in if there is more than 1 person, so if I interview, I would probably shoot in 4K.
Follow up question: Does RUclips favor 4K videos over 1080p when it comes to the algorithm? Thanks for this video, Nolan. This is the definitive answer on this subject as far as I'm concerned. Cheers!

2:14 How does that make sense? The 4K video has four times the amount of pixels as compared to 1080p, so how can the file size be only 2x bigger? If the 1080p file is 117MB then the 4K file should be around 4 x 117MB = 468MB, right? I think you are using different codecs for your two examples, so the numbers don't really make sense. What am I missing? :)
I'm here because I'm 56, bought a new camera that has 4k capability and just filmed myself and I look much older. I'm already old for my genre and shooting in 4k would really hurt my viewership. This was incredibly helpful.

Watching this on a 50" 720p plasma TV 😉 I shoot in 4k for the reframing flexibility, but I also upload 4k to RUclips as I heard RUclips prioritises 4k content and will recommend it more than a 1080p HD file. Not sure how accurate that is though!
I've also heard the prioritizing 4K content theory, and just with my small channel starting in March, our 4K videos are technically viewed moreso than the ones that are 2k or lower. (also 2k is an option vs 1080 or 4k).
Oh Wow..I had No Idea that was even a factor!! So crazy, I would've never thought. I'm experimenting and trying it out..LOL! Thank you so much for this info!! 🤗🤗🤗
I've heard some creators shoot in 1080p and then export a 4k video to upload to RUclips. RUclips registers it as a 4k video and if it does prioritise 4k content will push it out the same, even though you recorded in 1080p. You won't have the same 4k quality, but honestly most people won't see the difference if they are watching on their phone or just streaming it in 1080p anyway.

Great to know! The statistics really helped me see 1080 is the best bet! I watch on my tv but not too many do this. Thanks. Great content as always!!
1080P for all of the reasons you gave. Tbanks!
I'm here because I'm 56, bought a new camera that has 4k capability and just filmed myself and I look much older. I'm already old for my genre and shooting in 4k would really hurt my viewership. This was incredibly helpful.
What
100% informative and realistic video.
keep on uploading. good work.
Hey Praz, as new in RUclips what do you think about subscribe to each other's channel and that way support each other? Giving shout out, tips that will us improve etc. Cheers.
Short, factual and to the point. Thank you for this video. Greetings from Germany ⬛🟥🟨 (filming in 1080)
Nolan!! This was super helpful! Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing Nolan & Think media
Wow!!! I was thinking hardly about this today and needed something to explain it to me!!! Thanks so much Nolan!!!!! Love the background!❤❤👍🏼👍🏼🤣🤣🤣
Hey I am a new RUclips-er and at the beginning I was hesitating how to have proper, good quality viewing experience. I am shooting at 1080. Thanks for the explanation 😊
Hey Suzy, what do you think about subscribe to each other's channel and that way support each other? Giving shout out, tips that will us improve etc. Cheers.
This was an excellent explanation!
Thank you!!
What 1080 frame should I choice 24 30 60 frames per second thanks ?
Thank you for the beginner friendly 1080pm recommendation! I’m a beginner feeling person and have started on 720p using my iPhone, Raza :)
Thank you so much, this really helped me! Becuase Its just a hobby for me, and now Im sure, that Im not doing anything wrong❤❤
Watching this on a 50" 720p plasma TV 😉 I shoot in 4k for the reframing flexibility, but I also upload 4k to RUclips as I heard RUclips prioritises 4k content and will recommend it more than a 1080p HD file. Not sure how accurate that is though!
Yeah, I've heard this, too, re: prioritizing 4K and I'm wondering about it as well
Oh wow..really?? This I didn't know and I'm now very very curious!!!
Love the content, gotta new subscriber ❤️
Thanks for the Clarity👍🏻
1080p is a time saver rather than waiting til Tuesday to render in 4k.
That's what I do.
True, haha
@@nolanmolt Can I shoot the videos on 4K and then use a laptop that just have a screen resolution of 1920×1080? Will I be able to upload my videos on youtube? Sorry for my English bro, trying my best. Thanks in advance.
But even when you're waiting, people will still get to see a 1080 version in the meantime.
lol True
Great answer for my SD problem 😁😃
I've been doing 1080 vids on youtube for years, I finally decided to up my game so I shot my current video in 4k, I also bought a Rode wireless me....as my audio sucks. Anyway I'm currently editing the footage, my conclusion is the new mic is a game changer for me I love it, but the 4k on my macbook is painfully slow to edit and render so from now on I'm back to 1080. With average views in the hundreds occasionally thousands I don't think the other 7 plus billion on the planet will care. Great episode thanks for this.
Thank you this video helped me alot I was so confused
Thanks for the video man!
Super helpful - thank you!
Excellent video!;Thank you! Subbed!🎉🔥❤️
Awesome video! Thanks! So when uploading in 1080 vs 4K to RUclips, does RUclips compress your files differently and does that affect image quality? I feel like sometimes I upload 1080p however it looks sharper on my computer vs online on RUclips...not sure if my comment makes sense. 😅
very helpful, thanks!
Ohhhhhhh so so so insightful thank you!!!!
Thanks for this best explaination friend!
Thank you for the learning.👍💯
Thank You! That makes sense!
Definitely something to THINK about.
Perfect vid !
Good to know! Thank you!
Thanks, I just started my channel back in April shooting 1080p but quickly switched to 4K for editing and for the long term strategy when most phones will have 4K screens. Thoughts?
Hey Cabin, what do you think about subscribe to each other's channel and that way support each other? Giving shout out, tips that will us improve etc. Cheers.
If you CAN shoot and edit in 4k, than do it. Watch the video at 03:00 again for my thoughts!
Raphael Turcios You got it. Barbados looks beautiful.
Nolan Molt Thank You. I’ll rewatch that section. Keep the good content coming. I’ve learned a ton from Think Media. Thanks.
I noticed this video is 2 years old - a lot can change in that amount of time. Is your guidance the same? Could be worth an updated/sequel video
Thus is a great explanation of camera settings.
Very good info for beginners like me.
Very good advice! Thank you!
Short and sweet, thanks
love the videos
I’m shooting with 1080 but I’m still new to RUclips just started a month ago maybe when I get better equipment I’ll start using 4K
Thanks for this great video

Thank you so much! Have a nice day!
We need an updated video, Nolan! Thanks.
I just upgraded my 7ti to a 90D to shoot everything in 4K. I believe subs want the better quality and RUclips promotes it more.
I will have to check if my Cannon 70D shoots in 4k? Great to know, I have been struggling with memory and tech issues. I need to switch to 1080 for now.
Think media here helping us all out.
Hey Beverly, as new in RUclips what do you think about subscribe to each other's channel and that way support each other? Giving shout out, tips that will us improve etc. Cheers.
Cool explanation 👍🏼. When I shoot with my cam it's def 1080 but when I pull the drone out sorry bruh....I need that 4K sauce🤣
I learn most this channel.
Thanks. I have the new Sony which has 4K and was not sure if I should use it. What about 1080HD
