When you set the davinci project settings to 1440p then drag in 1080p footage, doesn't it stretch that footage to fill the canvas and make it look awful? I'm just a bit confused, I was thinking when working with 1080p 50k bitrate footage you would keep your davinci project's timeline settings at 1080p to edit the whole video, then in the render tab you would choose 1440p 60k bitrate, and it would work some sort of space magic to make it better haha. So when you drag in the first clip Davinci Resolve always asks if you want to adjust the canvas settings. I always drag the highest res clip that I will want to work with in first to let Resolve select the appropriate project settings. Then right before rendering I just change the Project Settings to 4K and render. I think (though I have never actually tested this) this is recommended over leaving the project settings, say at 1440p, and using a higher render resolution in the render tab since there appears a warning if you attempt to do this. Ok, you are super smart man. I would like to try something. I have watched tons of videos and they say to keep the canvas size and upscale size the same. I was told in OBS, to use 1920x1080 and upscale 1920x1080. My monitor res is 1920x1080. I have a Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. My upload is 22 mbps. I was also told to set kbps to 10,000-12,500 but someone else said 18,000. Then I was told 18,000kbps was overkill. Then I see they say to go with 20,000 sub 3 so go with 17,000kbps (incase of dropped frames/lag). I am so confused here. I am a new channel and starting out. I have tested videos and they pretty much all look the same. I go to RUclips Studio and create a custom 1440p stream key and place that into OBS. I use H.246 coding. Now I'm being told to use HEVC instead and the stream keys are useless. Can you tell me what is the correct settings here, please?
What difference Automatic (best) and Restrict to 60.000kbs ? And key frames automatic or every 30 frames for recording gameplay ? (i m new to Da Vinci ) but i already tested one video and worked fine.
Thanks I used your previous video to have a point of reference for 1080p->1440p when I first started. However some videos later I'd like to add my findings and empirical experiences: Due to how the codec algo works when lots of pixels are changing (very common in games as opposed to real shootings with static background) you need as much bitrate bandwidth as you can get. This means that regardless of the resulting single VMAF number score that may say "1% difference", higher bitrate videos have a cleaner picture when everything on screen is moving, because this is where bitrate is strapped and if there's not enough in that one moment the quality degrades. In practice a 100mbps game video is going to be (arguably visibly) cleaner than a ~70mbps one despite the VMAF saying there is not much difference. Also if youtube transcodes again into vp09 as the final rendering, then ideally the upload version should be as close as possible to the raw recording (and not an intermediate step that further degrades quality). I resorted to use the maximum configurable bitrate for recording 1080p (100mbps in radeon relive, OBS should have no limit) and same 100mbps when rendering into upscaled 1440p, and I let the youtube vp09 work on it.
What about streaming bitrate for 1080p... youtube recommend 12000 kbps for 1080p...does going upto 15000 kbps improves the streaming quality....?? Please make a video on streaming bitrate too because alot of guys searching for that since streaming doesn't requires 1000 subscribers anymore on RUclips... because anyone can stream now 😉
Would you happen to have any input, or a video on what color formats to use? E.g., NV12 8bit 4:2:0 2 planes vs something like I444 8bit 4:4:4 3 planes. RUclips reccomends 4:2:0 color subsampling for non hdr content. But they also reccomend .264 encoder. Im not sure how much I trust their own reccomendations.
@@TechGuides I only did a very quick test with low sample size, but I'm sticking to the same. I had a hard time telling the 2 apart by eye, however, I found the 4:4:4 looked a little less sharp with picture details. I can't explain why or if I was just seeing things, but I'm sticking to 4:2:0
If you live in a place with fast internet this is totally fine. But if your upload speed is limited, nothing in this video makes sense for said case scenario. Could you say actual bitrates people can use with a 12Mb upload for 1080p@30fps? Also, I think it's just bad from RUclips to not use VP9 on 1080p content, it's like people still using it being stuck 10 years in the past for quality. I upload high quality footage and it gets compressed to tomato pulp.
Yes Im afraid those are not very useful suggestions for 30fps and limited upload speeds. Also I just havent tested for at 30fps but I could if people would find that interesting!
I don't know if you addressed it in this video, but is there a big difference between using QuickTime vs MP4? DaVinci seems to default to QuickTime, but most online forums suggest using MP4 for RUclips. Thanks in advance. Also subscribed, your guides have been the most clear for me to understand this whole bitrate/format thing for RUclips!
Thanks, I appreciate your support! Actually I didn't. But I've planned to produce a similar video like this on DaVinici Resolve settings where I could test for this. My guess would be that there is not really much of a difference though ;)
Hmm I guess my videos look fine with native 1440p 60fps and 25.000 kbps recordings (HEVC). If I record like mentioned in this video, I would need to increase it to 80.000 kbps which sounds a bit much? Also do you only talk about DaVinci Rendering kbps or also on OBS recordings? I render with "best" in DaVinci and I record with 25.000 kbps in OBS.
thanks! i only have 15Mbps (Upload Speed) and my streams have a lot of "garbage", so what i did is: 1- upscale my 1080p res to 1440p to get VP9 2- Put youtube in normal mode (30 sec delay) to get some time to the platform to get a better image in my stream 3- Bitrate to 13000 (youtube says 6k to 30k for 1440p) 4- and use HEVC because this code reduce 1/2 the amount of bitrate usage for the same quality yeah, i got some garbage in Final Fantasy 14 for example when moving, but a lot less gargabe than 1080p with 6000 bitrate. Its not a perfect quality, but its ok. Sadly i cant for now get better upload speed, but i prefer getp VP9 with 1440p than use 1080p AVC1.
There's no best bitrate configuration for RUclips since, the same services, heavily compresses the video uploaded, also with ytdlnis (under yt-dlp) shows us throttled bitrate
Very informative video! One question. When upscaling 1080 footage to 1440, is there any advantage to setting the resize filter to Bicubic over Sharper?
Hey sorry maybe i missed it in the video but are you suggesting that the upscale can be done through youtube or should it only be done through obs. I intend on joining the youtube community still learning how to perfect my recordings
Don't upscale in OBS. Record in your native resolution at a reasonably high bitrate and then render the video in a video editing software such as Davinci Resolve (its free!) at a higher resolution
You are the first result when I google this specific question that provides useful information. Regardless of how precise I am in search (emphasizing recording not streaming) the first slee of results give some insanely low number (most I think are addressing streaming and not recording). I still struggle with this and I use the ms paint of video editing software - I have been recording at 65000 kpbs and then bc of all the transitions and fades I mix down the edited content at 240000 kpbs. I just increased my obs recording bit rate to 85000 kpbs for a yet to be released video I'm working on. At some point I was using way higher bc my old recording files were like 15 gigs for 10 mins of recording - I think I know the video I used that for and it does look better. I have started to mix down at 4k despite tte native recording resolution bing in 1080, not sure if tgat helps for RUclips but I read things I guess. Just discovered this channel, maybe I'll learn it right for now on.
Hello, please could you make a video configuration streaming RUclips maximum bitrate audio, video and the different codec resolutions because there is no content on that topic and your videos are very good
OK, now I have a problem. So I've been recording with Nvidia Nvenc h264 at 10000 kbps CBR. Most footage looks good and the overall size of the files is small (I have 7TB on my PC and still almost at full with all the VideoGame series I record, roughly I have recordings that are 5hours long x 20 to finish the series) But everyone was saying to switch to H265 for smaller sizes. GREAT, so I watched your previous video, but then you said to record at 1440p (which will increase the file size) and also that the minimum should be 60k bitrate. I use 10k. What do I do?
You have a 1440p display though right? If so I would definitely recommend recording at H265. But 10k is definitely too low in my oppinion. You could try to use CQP at a level of about 20 instead but then editing might become laggy...
@@TechGuides I played for 7 minutes the same mission in Halo 2 with 4 different things. 1st was H264 1440p 60fps with cbr 12kbps 2nd was h265 1440p 60fps with CQP at 23 3rd was h265 1440p 60fps with Cbr 12kbps 4th was h264 1080p 30fps with Cbr 12kbps My result was around 600Mb for a 7-minute clip for Every single CBR. Almost the same visuals as I use a Speedrun strat that generally looks the same. So I knew I had a level playing field. Nothing changed in terms of weight between h264/h265 or 1080p/1440p or 30/60fps. CQP was 3 GB!!!! For the same length, and only looked better in one instance where CBR was "struggling" (it just lost quality for a second in the same point for all 3, confirming we had a level playing field!) With these numbers, I'll take the 12kbps. And I will stay at h264 as it is less demanding in general (even for editing) Edit: roughly it takes 7,7MB a second for CQP vs the 1,47 for all CBR. My grounded series is 72 Hours long which makes it 384GB for CBR. With CQP it would have been 2TB!!!! OK! 1 series and I need a new SSD 😂
Hello friend, I want to ask why some videos on RUclips show with frame rate like 1080p 60, and some show only 1080p without frame rate with good quality. I mean what's the difference?
wow that huge video..i wish you could make a davinci resolve video how to render settings probably and advanced settings at render.thank you best greetz from germany
You recommended upscaling 1080p to to 1440p at 60Mbit/s, but what about upscaling your 1080p video to 4K? Would that not be better than upscaling to 1440p? And if so, why did you not recommend that? lol. And also what bitrate would you recommend for upscaling from 1080p to 4K if that does in fact yield better results than upscaling to 1440p?
I can not thank you enough for this video. Time and time I'd render an almost lossless 1080p video in DaVinci and when I upload it on RUclips, I didn't even want to look at it due to the quality loss. After watching your video yesterday, I tested it out by privately uploading an 1440p upscaled version of the same 1080p video that I had published on my channel recently and then played them side by side. The difference in quality was significant. Upscaled 1440p looked way better than the native 1080p. Obviously, the best thing would be to buy a 1440p monitor to capture videos in native 1440p resolution but for the time time being, this will do for me till I am able to save the money to go for a decent 1440p monitor (preferably oled🤑). I have also seen people on RUclips suggesting super scale feature in DaVinci. But that feature is for the studio version which cost quite a lot in my currency. If you have had the opportunity to use DaVinci Resolve Studio, please share your thoughts on the super scale feature. Will you suggest it over buying a 1440p monitor?
Thanks for watching buddy! I don't even own the Studio version of Resolve so I have no idea how good the super scale feature is. From my experience though, rendering a regular old 1080p in 1440p with a bit of sharpener added looks pretty much perfect so I personally would not bother. I used to even upscale 1080p footage to 4K and that still looked fine at 1440p ;)
Good question. I wasnt able to test for streaming yet but will definitely do so in the future! I would probably not upscale when streaming though due to the higher load on the system
@@TechGuides I'm currently doing a 1080p to 1440p upscale when I stream to RUclips as streaming 1080p with high motion games is genuinely unbearable at native 1080p no matter what bitrate. It's not too bad for me performance wise using nvenc on a 3070. I'd love to see a video on the quality differences exactly like this one, and maybe also a performance analysis too? For instance the different nvenc OBS presets, and using the canvas scale method or the encoder output scale method.
I see! Yes I have actually a very old video where I compared exactly that - the performance impact and resulting quality of the different upscaling options. As I mentioned, its pretty old so I should probably do an update :)
@@TechGuides Yeah, the new nvenc has quality presents and with RUclips's high bitrate support, it might be a good option to reduce the preset for less performance hit while increasing the bitrate if your network can handle it. I do also remember hearing somewhere, it might have been EposVox, but apparently the hevc Nvidia encoder is sometimes more efficient and uses less performance than the h264 one.
I doubt you would still be responding to comments on this video but anyways would upscaling in OBS to 1440 from 1080p produce better quality than being in 1080 and upscaling in any video editing software?
Of course I do ;) I would not advice it. I actually once tested this and the native resolution at a high bitrate in OBS produces the best raw video which can then be easily upscaled when editing.
Thanks, I want to try that same thing. Where do I switch the bitrate? Can't find where in RUclips or in my editor (iMovie) where I can change the bitrate.
You get vp09 at 1080p after a few hours always, if video is doing well. I think there should be a point both upscaling and getting vp09 are optimized. What about 1152x2048? It means less upscaling and it gets vp09 always even initially. @@TechGuides
I remember it depends on channel too. Some big channels get even av01 for their 720p videos. Anyway, I rewatched this guide and rendering my first 4K video. Thanks fo this great content full of legit data. @@TechGuides
What would be Your Recommendation on 2560x1600 resolution in terms of Upscaling or Not and also the Specific Bitrate to Render, Keeping 16:10 ratio for the Final Result?
4:50 could the plateau after 80 MB be because you recorded the video at 80 MB? lets say you recorded a video at 100 MB, would exporting this video at 100 MB has better quality than exporting it at 80 MB, wouldn't it?
@@TechGuides sorry i misunderstood lol. by the way with your advice i started recording my videos with hevc codec, but premiere pro doesn't run it smoothly at all :( impossible to edit them.
Would recording at 1080 and then rescaling to 1440 be the same as recording natively at 1440? Which option of the 2 would be better in terms of quality-storage? Sorry if i miss something, im using google traductor
Not quite. The 1440p native recording would certainly be much sharper compared to the 1080p recording. Especially when you're playing in 1440p. So I would recommend 1440p ;)
Thanks for treating my comment well. So, I place a query, I tend to upload long-plays of gameplay around 1hr+ and usually 1080p now since few days up-ed my export settings to 2160p-60 or 50Fps-100000kbps bitrate. Upload was for about 1.5-2hrs and processing was completed but said: "Still processing" and never made to complete even after 24hrs, therefore had to delete it and still trying to lowering bitrate and fps to get it to process. Also used "send feedback" method a couple of times which failed to show me success. Am I doing something wrong?
Hey there! Sorry for the delayed response but I think with 1hr+ long gameplays you just have to be super patient. The 4K processing will inevitably take long and could probably take more than a day if you're unlucky. Sometimes my videos are processed within minutes, other times it takes hours (for ~10min long videos)
@@TechGuides YES! Tried and replying now. Did a little experiment, lowered the bitrate and exported, then took your advice and waited for a damn 4 hours for a 1.5hr long video to process. What I understood, 1+hr video wasn't processed even after 24hrs because of 100000 bitrate, then 80k worked. It was 4k 50fps.
Im not familiar with iMovie but there might be "advanced" render options where you can define the target bitrate. However, I would recommend to use davinci resolve to edit videos. Its very powerful (and free) but its also easy enough to get started with.
I remember doing a bunch of tests of my own years ago to find the best compromise of file size/render time/visual quality. Took me days to settle on something and haven't dared look into it again. I would've killed for something like this back then! It just so happens that I've upgraded my rig recently and can now afford both bigger files and higher bitrate due to faster hardware, so I'm incredibly thankful I didn't have do all those rest renders again. Thanks for all the hard work that went into this! I sure do appreciate it and I'm sure many others do as well
You can find many threads on Reddit and other boards where people are asking for help in bettering their RUclips videos quality, and the "experts" respond there with absolute confidence that upscaling doesn't improve the quality at all. Technically that's true, but not in the case of RUclips. Firstly, there is the AVC1 -> VP9 trigger at 1440p that you mentioned here, and secondly, RUclips allocates more bitrate in general for videos of higher resolution. Yes, it is even beneficial to upscale from 720p to 1080p, which is a useful tip for people who record retro games.
hi, i recently started my youtube channel and i want to upload gaming videos , i export both 1080p and 1440p at same bitrate , file size is not changing, also video quality is the same, so what is the different and which one take longer to upload ? my recording setting is 1440p 50 Mbps , and premier pro export setting is VBR 2 pass Target 30 Mbps - Max 50 Mbps , can u explain to me pls ? and one more question , does my internet connection upload speed affect the uploaded video quality ? bcoz i dont have a good connection
Don't worry, upload speed does not affect the final video quality. If you record at 1440p then definitely also render at 1440p. The final video on YT will be much better quality than if you would render 1080p because of the inferior codec which is assigned to 1080p content.

Yes this is very much in-line with my findings: the higher the bitrate the better :)
Thanks again for your analysis. They are very helpful and help those of us who upload videos to RUclips. Congratulations for your work.
Much appreciated!!
I record video on my iphone using 4K HDR 30FPS IT HEVC I need best bitrate for quality video can someone recommend me bitrate
So far I havent tested the impact of chroma subsampling on video quality yet so for now I just stick to 4:2:0
@@TechGuides I only did a very quick test with low sample size, but I'm sticking to the same. I had a hard time telling the 2 apart by eye, however, I found the 4:4:4 looked a little less sharp with picture details. I can't explain why or if I was just seeing things, but I'm sticking to 4:2:0
Hey bro How to upload 30hour gameplay in 4k
I render with "best" in DaVinci and I record with 25.000 kbps in OBS.
thanks i make video gaming at 1080p 60fps is good for me upscale 1440p ?
thanks! i only have 15Mbps (Upload Speed) and my streams have a lot of "garbage", so what i did is:
1- upscale my 1080p res to 1440p to get VP9
2- Put youtube in normal mode (30 sec delay) to get some time to the platform to get a better image in my stream
3- Bitrate to 13000 (youtube says 6k to 30k for 1440p)
4- and use HEVC because this code reduce 1/2 the amount of bitrate usage for the same quality
yeah, i got some garbage in Final Fantasy 14 for example when moving, but a lot less gargabe than 1080p with 6000 bitrate. Its not a perfect quality, but its ok. Sadly i cant for now get better upload speed, but i prefer getp VP9 with 1440p than use 1080p AVC1.
youtube quality has been getting worse and worse
u used 60000 for 1440p, what u use fro1080p?
There's no best bitrate configuration for RUclips since, the same services, heavily compresses the video uploaded, also with ytdlnis (under yt-dlp) shows us throttled bitrate
Bli bla blu. The best bitrate is just the highest you can still upload at. A 80mbps video will looks light years better than a 10mbps one
@@TechGuides that's why I upload at "constant quantizer" of 15 at HEVC or AVC

Very informative video! One question. When upscaling 1080 footage to 1440, is there any advantage to setting the resize filter to Bicubic over Sharper?
I prefer bicubic over sharper as text looks much cleaner
Got it. Thanks for the info! @@TechGuides
Just discovered this channel, maybe I'll learn it right for now on.
if my laptop is a 1920 x 1080, then what resolution should I upload with?
If your laptop is able to render at an upscaled 1440p than that's what I would recommend due to the better codec being assigned to 1440p videos by YT
What about during the recording phase in 1080p? Should I stick with around 30k bitrate? then at editing force render at 1440p with 60k?
Hello, please could you make a video configuration streaming RUclips maximum bitrate audio, video and the different codec resolutions because there is no content on that topic and your videos are very good
Definitely will try to do a video on streaming one day. Havent fogured out a solid testing method yet though
You dont know how much time I was searching for this exact topic on google until I find your video. Thank you so much. Liked and subscribed.
Hello, what would you recommend for RUclips shorts? I record in 1440p but upload shorts in 1080x1920? also what bitrate for the shorts, thank you
good question. I have never really tested this and just render shorts at like 30-40mbit
1st was H264 1440p 60fps with cbr 12kbps
2nd was h265 1440p 60fps with CQP at 23
3rd was h265 1440p 60fps with Cbr 12kbps
4th was h264 1080p 30fps with Cbr 12kbps
My result was around 600Mb for a 7-minute clip for Every single CBR. Almost the same visuals as I use a Speedrun strat that generally looks the same. So I knew I had a level playing field. Nothing changed in terms of weight between h264/h265 or 1080p/1440p or 30/60fps. CQP was 3 GB!!!!
For the same length, and only looked better in one instance where CBR was "struggling" (it just lost quality for a second in the same point for all 3, confirming we had a level playing field!)
With these numbers, I'll take the 12kbps. And I will stay at h264 as it is less demanding in general (even for editing)
Edit: roughly it takes 7,7MB a second for CQP vs the 1,47 for all CBR. My grounded series is 72 Hours long which makes it 384GB for CBR. With CQP it would have been 2TB!!!! OK! 1 series and I need a new SSD 😂
is it cbr or vbr in terms of 60 mbps rendering
1:20 DaVinci Resolve allows You to have VBR.
Only in the (payed) studio version no?
idk. I have studio and have that option@@TechGuides
my gopro7 recording with 72k bitrate is it good to render on 100-120k bitrate? (4k resolution)
Doesn't really make sense to render at a much higher bitrate than what the original footage is recorded in. I would say 80mbps suffices
Hello friend, I want to ask why some videos on RUclips show with frame rate like 1080p 60, and some show only 1080p without frame rate with good quality. I mean what's the difference?
1080p is for 30 / 24 / 25 fps refresh rate while 1080p60 is with 60 fps
So for 1080 to 1440: do I set the timeline to 1440, or is it enough to just set render to 1440 in the delivery step?
Set the timeline to 1440 before rendering
@@TechGuides What about the output part of the timeline, what does that do?

You recommended upscaling 1080p to to 1440p at 60Mbit/s, but what about upscaling your 1080p video to 4K? Would that not be better than upscaling to 1440p? And if so, why did you not recommend that? lol. And also what bitrate would you recommend for upscaling from 1080p to 4K if that does in fact yield better results than upscaling to 1440p?
e
Thanks! It was useful for me.👍👍
Upscaling 1080p to 4k, is 80M good? Also when upscaling native 1080p to 4k, should H265 be used?
Yo también tengo esa duda, ¿Cuántos M necesitas para escalar de 1080p a 4k? ¿80? ¿Y merece la pena?
Uh hello? 720p???
Not in the title of the video, so why surprised?
Because it should be as i searched for 720p on google and your video was a result @@TechGuides
Well take it to RUclips then, I didn't mention 720p in the video once, nor is it in the title, description or thumbnail
How to upscale 1080p videos to 1440p?
Just render at 1440p. Well thats what I do. There's not a huge difference
Can you do one of these but for RUclips streaming? Should I upscale to 1440 when streaming too.
I do also remember hearing somewhere, it might have been EposVox, but apparently the hevc Nvidia encoder is sometimes more efficient and uses less performance than the h264 one.
tank you best 1080p60fps gaming, 45000 bitrate ?
Amazing video. Can you do an update with 8k included also?
Nice video! Should I rather render with cbr or vbr in 4k H265? thx
And at 1080 upscaled to 2k should i use cbr 60mbs ou vbr1?
I doubt you would still be responding to comments on this video but anyways would upscaling in OBS to 1440 from 1080p produce better quality than being in 1080 and upscaling in any video editing software?
Of course I do ;) I would not advice it. I actually once tested this and the native resolution at a high bitrate in OBS produces the best raw video which can then be easily upscaled when editing.
@@TechGuides oh awesome. Thank you

But, if you get vp09 for sure, native 1080p should be better than 1440p upscaled version? I guess upscaling lower video quality too.
You cant get VP9 on 1080p native videos. And even if you could the upscaled 1440p version would still look better
You get vp09 at 1080p after a few hours always, if video is doing well. I think there should be a point both upscaling and getting vp09 are optimized. What about 1152x2048? It means less upscaling and it gets vp09 always even initially. @@TechGuides

could the plateau after 80 MB be because you recorded the video at 80 MB? lets say you recorded a video at 100 MB, would exporting this video at 100 MB has better quality than exporting it at 80 MB, wouldn't it?

Great video, very helpful. How do I change the bit rate? I can't find where in RUclips or my editor (iMovie), where I can do it. HELP PLEASE! :)
Im not familiar with iMovie but there might be "advanced" render options where you can define the target bitrate. However, I would recommend to use davinci resolve to edit videos. Its very powerful (and free) but its also easy enough to get started with.

Thank you so much for your Videos! Im so happy I found your RUclips Channel!
Thanks!!

Don't worry, upload speed does not affect the final video quality. If you record at 1440p then definitely also render at 1440p. The final video on YT will be much better quality than if you would render 1080p because of the inferior codec which is assigned to 1080p content.
