    I must admit, unlike youtube's compression algorithm, you did a great job at simplifying the concept of bitrates on youtube vs perceived quality with the easy to understand graphs and charts. Thank you for your effort!

    You have no idea how much of an amazing explanation this is. Thank you for such a detailed but simple explanation.
    I am producing my own (basic, fun) travel videos which are a combination of photos & videos (high bitrate videos from GoPro & comparatively lower bitrate videos from mobile) .
    I had been shooting 1080p videos but noticed downgrade when hyperlapse videos or heavy movement clips were involved.
    Rendering 1080p video projects to 1440p for youtube upload did help, but the info you have provided is really going to be helpful longterm.
    1080p @ 40MB and 1440p @ 60MB. This is really helpful.
    For my requirement, I will try shooting 1080p @ 50MB bitrate on both GoPro & mobile.
    Render that to 1440p @ 50MB bitrate for youtube.
    Thanks again. Wow, that was great info.
    Excited to experiment.

    I really suffer from this problem for two years,when I upload a video to my channel, for example, for the game PES 2021, at 200 megabytes per second on 1080p60, then I find RUclips destroying the final image of the video and showing pixels around the players and losing details when moving and the image is very bad. thank u For your great effort, you deserve the best

    My render settings in davinci for anyone that needs it:
    I found that for 1440P in Davincy using:
    Format=Quicktime
    Codec=H.264
    Res=2560x1440
    FPS=60
    Quality= Restricted to 80000Kb/s
    Rest set to default.

    thanks for the super work you have done on this! however, i think it lacks an important discussion element that is the codec used by RUclips.
    Normally YT uses avc1 for 1080p and vp09 for higher resolutions (you can find it by clicking the right button on the youtube video and choosing "statistics for nerds").
    Sometimes, for bigger channels, RUclips chooses vp09 also for 1080p. Codec vp09 usually delivers higher quality videos with respect to avc1.
    This fact could change the concluding results.

    • @TechGuides
      @TechGuides  3 года назад +1

    Very cool video! I liked and subscribed. I just uploaded my first 720p video to RUclips. I was very upset that my project was much lower quality than the original file on my PC. I found out that RUclips gives 1440p videos the crispy vp9 codec. So, I am currently uploading a 2560x1440 version of the file @ 15 mbps + 60 mbps (thanks to watching your video) to RUclips to see if there is any difference.

    • @GaugausGamingandBlahBlah
      @GaugausGamingandBlahBlah 3 года назад +1

      Then one day you will notice RUclips 1440p encoded video quality is crap compared to their 2160p hehe. But lower res = lower bitrate = lower bandwidth, they do that on purpose. Low bandwidth means a lot to average users. Not for me though, I prefer best possible quality, because I upload to preserve, not for normal daily watching.

    Does upscaling a 1080p video to 4K actually improve its “1080p” quality on RUclips? I don’t mean rendering a 1080p in 4k, but actually upscaling it.

    Honestly I think 80mbps would be the max to go with for 4k as above that it won't be that much different between it and 100mbps(unless 80mbps isn't enough for certain games). Even then you don't need 80mbps for every game as many are even fine at 50 and 60mbps. Like 2D games for example, using anything above 50mbps for the most part won't be that different from 80-100mbps as it won't be compressed much if at all due to the bitrate being high enough to handle it along with graphical effects not being intensive as 3D games.
    And that's another thing, graphical effects also affects the video quality. As you can see, RUclips doesn't base quality on fix bitrate but instead they use variable bitrate quality which means if there's less motion or graphical effects are going on then the video quality on certain scenes would be great, it's why it's easier to do 2D games and scenes that aren't as motion heavy(normally cutscenes)while anything that's really fast like many games can result in compression due to their variable video quality not being able to keep up and use as much bitrate.
    I have recorded and uploaded a gaming vid in native 4k and when I went to download it using 4k Downloader, even though it was uploaded at 80mbps and kept a lot of the quality, the compression was still there in parts as the bitrate for the downloaded vid was around 17mbps. Funny enough I uploaded upscaled 4k vids in like 50mbps and after downloading the video it came around 25mbps.
    What this means is that depending on the game and what's going graphically in the scenes, it's completely random for what the actual bitrate will be when uploading at any high bitrate. The fact that when you record at a higher bitrate(80) but have a lower bitrate on RUclips(17) and you record at a lower bitrate(50) but have a higher one on RUclips(25) just proves that RUclips relies on what's going on in the video more than just relying on the highest bitrate available. High bitrates at 50mbps and above always helps, but RUclips will determine which bitrate the vid will have due to what's going on in the game.
    In short, record between 50-80mbps(100 if it's still compressed at 80mbps) and choose which games to use those bitrates as it varies on them and be aware that it's so random for what RUclips decides to pick for the outcome of the bitrate since they use variable bitrate quality that relies on motion, graphical effects and if it's 2D or 3D.

    • @TechGuides
      @TechGuides  3 года назад +1

      Oh that's a lot of text :) Yes this test was specifically designed for fast paced action games like modern warfare. Also, I deliberately used two different games (one very graphically intensive, the other not so) to show the variability in resulting bitrate. And yes, 2D games would have muuuuuch lower saturation points for sure!

    • @masterlee1988
      @masterlee1988 3 года назад +2

      @@TechGuides Yeah I wanted to say that since there's a lot to it and RUclips doesn't make it so easy. It's so random for what it does to bitrate when you upload at high bitrates even and it's variable bitrate quality will only keep what it likes and compress what it can't handle. But it's for the best to upload at a high bitrate regardless since their compression can be awful if it's at a lower bitrate already to begin with.
      It's recommended to do at least 4k 60fps uploads for gaming vids because anything lower and video quality can suffer more depending on the game and what's going on in the scenes. RUclips honestly needs to allow for higher bitrates for 720p and 1080p because what they have is so low, like under 10mbps low when they compress the vids at resolutions like that, lol. To avoid that I normally do 4k uploads for years, upscaling for most years and even did some native 4k recently and it's been a life saver for those vids.

    • @rroum
      @rroum Год назад +1

      @@masterlee1988 so basically i should just render at 4k 60fps with a bitrate of 80 to 100mbps just to be safe right?

    • @masterlee1988
      @masterlee1988 Год назад

      @@rroum Maybe, but RUclips will scale it down to 20-30 mbps since RUclips technically can't support the full 80+ mbps. I would argue 50mbps would be more than enough for RUclips so it'll scale it down to 20-30mbps which means it'll use at least nearly half or half of 50mbps for the most part.

    Nice, I was pretty close capturing games at 75mbps at 1440p. RUclips really does give you a lot more bit-rate to work with at 1440p, in fact I would say that going from 1080 to 1440 is the best thing you can do for gaming footage on youtube. Besides that, 75mbps is just a good bit-rate to have your footage at to watch in general. Also, it's useful seeing how the 1440p line goes up more significantly than the 1080p line after your theoretical ideal limit. Will keep this in mind for certain games.

    If I record in 1080 and I want the better encoder for RUclips, when I render the video should I render in the same bit rate that I recorded or upscale to your suggested 1440p bit rate? Also I've started recorded in 50000 bit rate and it doesn't look much better than before when I recorded in like 16000, if I'm not downscaling should I use the Bilinear codec? I really appreciate all your help and videos

    great video, since you made another great video about h.264 and h.265. I'm assuming the bitrates you mentioned in this video are for h.264. So, for h.265 what bitrates would you recommend for every resolution?

    Really nice video with great methodology and reasoning. Thank you so much for creating and sharing these! Your videos really helped me understand why I was always so freaked out by the bad quality whenever I saw one of my videos on RUclips for the first time. And hopefully I will be able to avoid that in the future.
    I'm assuming all of these values apply to 60 FPS. I'm guessing one could go lower for 30 FPS footage? Do you have any information on that?

    • @TechGuides
      @TechGuides  3 года назад +4

      Yes these test have all been done at 60FPS. Honestly, I didnt try with 30FPS because of the immense amount of work this video has already been. Obviously the "best" bitrate would be somewhat lower, I'd say maybe 10-15mbps less but thats really just a guess

    Hi Roman. This is a fantastic video and I really appreciate the effort you've put into this. However, the biggest problem you have here is that of concatenation because you've used an inter-fame codec as your source. I have done many similar tests and using an intra-frame source, uncompressed, to then generate an inter-frame intermediate from, or indeed, uploading an intra-frame intermediate codec, including uncompressed, will give different results. Also. As you pointed out, your capture was only 1440 and as you know, this isn't the way to gauge your 4K results, due to the upscaling from your source. You've then also got the real world differences between the bitrates used for your source inter-frame recording and your delivery (intermediate), which I assume was H.264 due to when you made this video. Using a more efficient codec (H.264, VP9 etc.) for your recording and upload (intermediate) will also give different results, depending on bit rate. None the less, this is an excellent video and your attention to detail is awesome, and appreciated. A massive thumbs up from me and a sub. Cheers, Dave.
