Why Snow and Confetti Ruin YouTube Video Quality

@Richard Casterly Whoever edited the video, which I feel is easily implied by the context, if you're trying to give me a lesson in sentence clarity or something.
If you're not and I'm reading too into what you asked, I don't know who edits these.
Edward Nygma I don’t even think that counts as implied. You’re directly stating it. There’s zero ambiguity who you mean.

The enhanced bitrate that RUclips put out recently has really changed the part towards the end when he manually brings the bitrate back up. Everything is fairly clear for me even before the snap.

So a lot of people might not remember this but this video watching experence was slightly different when it came out.
RUclips has improved its quality over the years as has our internet connections.
When Tom Scott says "over the next couple of seconds the quality of the video will come back" it was literal, it use to take a second or two for the quality to return.
Now though? The quality instantly comes back within a fraction of a second. Maybe a few frames worth of low quality video but that's all that you can see now.
Literally blink-and-you'll-miss-it.
The same effect also would apply to when he increased the bitrate in the video. The quality used to still be rough for a few seconds.
Yes indeed ! Thank you for archiving that.
Thank you for that. I was wondering why I wasn't seeing what he was talking about
Thank you for this! I was actually wondering about not seeing that happen. It's interesting to know that it didn't happen for me due to me watching it six years later!
I don't know if they improved even more in 5 months but now it's not even half a second, it's just instant and the quality before it all stops drops just a very tiny amount

Thoroughly agree with you on that one. For my own channel, of course!
same here!
Trees are really bad for doing this too. Any time there's a shaded path surrounded by trees, I have to bump the quality all the way up.
If you use CRF (Constant Rate Factor) in the encoder, it will do that automatically for you, detecting any scenes where this is needed.
It’s true. Foliage is one of the most bit rate-intensive things in video. When I once filmed a forested path with an iPhone XS camera in H.264 with approximately 17 Mbps (the set bit rate of an iPhone with 1080p 25 fps video), I could still see some artifacture in the distance.
However, whenever I use my Canon EOS R5 using the same resolution and frame rate, and the IPB setting (approximately 28 Mbps for 1080p 25 fps) any and all artifacts are gone, but that’s probably also due to the much larger sensor, which makes the detail much more easy to distinguish.
The best thing about Tom Scott videos is you never know if its from 7 years ago or 7 days ago

At 1080p enhanced the video quality is not reduced which is magical
the editing is beyond amazing, very interesting way to present information like this while making it easy to understand for people that are completely new to that concept, while keeping it entertaining!
One thing I didn't expect: the quality actually returns half a second before the confetti stops! RUclips's encoding is a little smarter than I thought it was - I'd guess it worked out there'd be some spare bits coming up and used them to fill in the gaps.
The quality is okay!
+Tom Scott The fact that the timeline pointer in the Premier Pro part doesnt move and that the "bits of pixels" were the tracking indicators from After Effects make me feel weird somehow!
+Tom Scott If you upload a video at 4K, does the bitrate increase, even if watched at 1080/720p?

That must have taken forever to edit! I totally agree about those little touches, though

I knew most of this already, but damn, the editing on this was fantastic! That literal "throwaway" joke with the jacket … wow! So much effort, but it goes a long way. Great job!
+frustbox Thanks very much! That jacket took far too long to do, so I'm glad it paid off!
+Tom Scott Yeah I studied computer science and know most of what you're talking about but I still watch because you edit it so well!
I mean you made base64 entertaining...
+frustbox +1 This was awesome, even if you already understand the topic.
+frustbox I always love, when something does that xD
+frustbox Ya Tom really flexed his editing muscles on this one, I wonder how many hours it took him?
The initial scene was really well made. I couldn't decide if it's an artificial background or you have some weird lighting going on.
+Cristi Neagu Matching the lighting on that was difficult! When Norway disappears, the colour balance on me changes too -- but it's difficult to tell given I'm taking the coat off at the same time :)
+Cristi Neagu It was really well made but there were some small things that gave it away. His breath didn't condense and his face showed no signs of being subjected to the cold, he wasn't particularly red anywhere.
With that kind of snow, under a clear sky it's going to be really cold.
Dojan5 True, but i was talking solely from a composition point of view.
+Tom Scott Yeah. I could easily tell it was fake. I'm pretty sure the screen was green, and not just because that's the most common color. I really liked the editing nonetheless. I mean, how can I demand malignant perfectionism?
Nah, there still was that noticeable green glow you get when standing too close to a green screen. But that's really difficult to get rid of, you need a really big green screen and a lot of distance and separate lighting for the screen and for you, _a lot_ of cleaning up in post… This was really good for a small production, but not perfect.
Whatching this video now with 1080p premium :P
*coat flies out of frame*
Me: “Oh.”
This was a very good explanation! I learned this by trial and error while uploading animations. The more moving little details, gradients or flashing lights, means worse quality, so it's something to have in mind while making animations, well in general while making any YT content.

Just got this video in the recommended and honestly, it makes me think about some old footage I recorded being blocky despite (what I thought at the time anyway) the bit rate being set to high. Having done my senior project on using wavelets to perform image compression, this explanation was very intuitive

5 years later and I'm still learning more everyday from @Tom Scott
Thank you for this information. I'm over here recording video games, editing/encoding/uploading those videos, and I've been learning a lot through this. I see other people post videos that looks sharper, and I ask myself, "what do I need to improve?".
I just figured out one of my problems with audio delay occurring in some recordings as the result of render delay.
I am Streaming/Recording/Playing at the same time, which limits my ability to use maximum settings because of increased render delay.
Now I'm looking at recording bitrate, and someone sent me this video. I've learned a lot!
This is a very high quality video, and I'm not talking about bit rate or compression!
Just wanted to let you know that whenever this happens on TV, everyone in my family goes "it's the Tom Scott thing!". I'm sure loads of other people do too!

Thats why 720p videos on RUclips looks like 240p in a few videos with lots of stuff going on
Wow that explains why smash bros ultimate video look awful in 720p
@DamageIncM *some 1080p videos.
There are 720p videos copressed by RUclips that look like real life, because they are stylised, and don't have a lot of colour, so you can't even see compression in the blacks. I just wanted to highlight that sometimes the negative effect is negligible and most of the 720/1080 quality can shine without deterioration.
@DamageIncM I think I transferred OneNYBoy's "like 240p" over onto your message when I read it. Sorry, my bad. Of course RUclips doesn't have a *positive* effect on the quality.

Many cuts are good sometimes, it means something. No matter most of modern youtubers simply overuse this technique and don't use it properly.

How have you not got your own tv show already?
Because TV is overrated. He's the boss of his RUclips channel and can do whatever he wants with his content whereas a TV producer won't allow that to happen and he'll have rules to follow.
DΔRIO MΔRCHESI RUclips is slowly killing tv. and this is great
It would be ruined because then he'd have to answer to someone else, i.e. NBC, Discovery, etc. There's a reason those networks suck nowadays.
He's British so it would never be on NBC or any US channel, it would be more like BBC or C4
Do any of you even watch wildlife shows on the BBC? if so you would know its a very slick operation with more viewers than X Factor, so yeah tv is overrated but doesn't mean there isn't anything good or informative on there.
