    Ultramarine Ash, historically, has been the leftover rock from lapis lazuli after all (or most) of the blue has been extracted. I think Roman Szmal’s very grey-leaning lapis lazuli is probably an ultramarine ash.

    Oh, that Aquapasto...it's interesting if you want to get impasto effects or brushstroke effects just using your watercolors/gouache...I played around with it for a minute and a half, lol, but just never found a regular use for it -- maybe people who love to do mixed media art journal abstract pages? I did find that if you left it to totally dry on even a ceramic or porcelain palette, it's next to impossible to get it off without chipping away at it or sanding/scrubbing it off with industrial scrubbers or steel wool.

    Nice vid to wake up to! I ❤my Aquapasto. I've mainly been using it to be able to do some cool mark making in with abstract landscapes. The more you play, the texture ideas you'll get for sure. I also think that you chose the absolute best colour from the Winsor and Newton Rival range. The Ash blue is really stunning and I agree that for duller skies or even clouds it is a stunning addition to a palette. Actually the colours you had in your ceramic palette looked lovely, Ash Blue, Opera and the Gold from the last video. Definitely given me some inspiration! As always, cheers 👍🏻

      I can't believe I've not come across it before - I seem to be the last one! I'm so happy you like it! That's kind of what I had in mind - the abstract stuff.
      I love the colour of the Blue Ash, but I need to play with it more. I only did the little swatch in the video, but it doesn't seem to have great flow. Come to think of it, none of my Winsor and Newton's seem to, but maybe that's just my colour choices.

    Hi Helen!
    It was me who told you about using the pastel tools on Pastelmat. They work better if you use less pigment and add more layers if needed. I apply PanPastel with makeup brushes (I can try to find the brand if you are interested). If I am using sticks, either I use the brush directly on the stick (it works best with very soft pastels such as Sennelier) to grab the colour either I use a scrap paper to lay down the colour and then I pick it with the brush to apply on Pastelmat.
    Speaking of Pastelmat, I will try the Canson sand paper. It can be a very good paper for studies!
    I looked at the new Revival colours and I am quite obsessed with the Tyrian Purple, but I can’t find them here in France yet. 😒
    A quick French tip, the pronunciation of the Mi of Mi-Teintes is the same as “me” in English. 😉
    It was a very interesting haul! Thank you!

      Thank you very much - I'd never thought to apply the soft pastel indirectly - that makes a lot of sense, especially with the really soft ones, like the Schmincke ones I was using here. Thanks again!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  26 дней назад +1

      Off the top of my head, I'd say that Zoisite is a lot less intense and dark, way more granulating, and more green - basically a very granulating, slightly more muted version of Perylene Green. I'll try and have a play with them, and update this if I'm wrong.

    Really like the grass brush, pink grass is nice too! The gel was interesting to see, the color came out much smoother and even with it mixed in. The paint doesn't move around as much, probably won't be able to granulate for granulating paints.

    Looks like you're well prepared for winter grey skies in the future. I bought Davy's grey myself. After swatching it out I thought it looked a lot like Daniel Smith's Rare green earth, minus the granulation. After I bought those 7 Holbein paints on special earlier this week, I was naughty and went back online and bought another 7 a couple of days later. Heehee there's no guilty faced emoji on here 🤭😂 My daughter likes to paint flowers so we picked more pinks and flowery colors with the Holbein orders. I'm really happy with them. I think Holbein's leaf green will pass as a Daniel Smith green gold equivalent and the Holbein greenish yellow as a rich green gold DS equivalent and much cheaper for me to buy.
    I think the Rosa Gallery black green looks more like sodalite or payne's blue grey more than a black. It probably looks different to you in real life than what I'm seeing online though.
    I love the faded look of that Sepia pen 😍

    I checked the W&N website again, I could only find revival sets but no information about the paints themselves. It’s a pity that they discontinued Aureolin PY40 and Viridian PG18. I would have liked to try their PY40. Retaining these paints from the late 1800s gave them a connection to a more romantic time (painting-wise); I’m not sure why they never capitalised on that.

    The mix you made doesn’t read very similar to the Mineral Grey to me. I think the white in that one is doing lots of work to dull it down and add opacity that isn’t present in your mix. Good call on the Ultramarine Ash for a dull sky color.

    Hi Helen. That brush I was told, I have two of them, is for blending and softening. A method you demonstrated well. Not so hard though. Pratice with skin; it works!
    I pronounced Mi-Teintes incorrectly at first and was told by a lady at Great Art that it is pronounced as 'me' (as I or myself) and 'taunts' (as to provoke or anger someone.) I also heard Phil Davies pronounce it that way too, so I guess that's about correct.

      @@helencryer Sorry, maybe we are at crossed lines. I meant the brush you used on the pastels where you said you'd wiped off more pastel than you expected. The flat brush with the clipped out tip, I have three infact, are for grasses and you can do some tree types with them. I love them, but like a lot of brushes of that type, don't get them too wet or at least dry them on a paper towel before dipping the tip in the paint. Then soft gentle swipes, a lot of air and little hair, as Bob Ross used to say. I'm sure you'll get used to them and love them.

    Thanks for this. Intrigued by what w+n are aiming for with these 6 colours. First impression those two look quite limited - very low tinting strength and flat. Your mixes have a higher tint range, colour separation, and more granulation… so for me blow the w+n out of the proverbial water.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  22 дня назад

    Do you have any pan pastels? I am wondering what it would be like mixing some pan pastel dust (essentially pure pigment) with aquapasto for a very pigmented "vaseline" that would keep that full impasto texture. Interesting stuff.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  25 дней назад

      I do have some, so might have a play. I'm still not really sure what the idea of it is though,, other than to keep it transparent, because we have acrylics and oils for impasto texture too.

    • @davejohnson5365

      I would say the idea is to add some impasto but stay in the ‘watercolour sphere’ - i.e. without having to use acrylic or oils.

    What I don’t understand about light fast, testing any watercolours is why people hang the water colours facing outwards in a window when the whole point is to see how long that will last for painting that you may sell. How many people do you know buy an artwork for their home, only to put it in the window facing outwards so they can’t actually see it. ”I’ll put it somewhere where it constantly gets direct sunlight and I can’t see it” when someone spending money on an art work that they really love. Surely the artist or the person buying, it knows about UV glass to give it extra protection, but it’s going to be in the house, not in direct sunlight as a caveat, I know the colours can be fugitive, but again who puts a painting they love that they’ve either made or bought from an artist and places it facing outwards in a window, so you can’t see it or enjoy it in your own home, where it gets the most sun. And just to be clear this is not a go at Helen. This is something I’ve asked almost every RUclips artist. Who does this?

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  25 дней назад +2

      Hi, I totally get your question, and can only answer for myself, but the reason I put it in a window, is not because I think that's exactly how people will place their own pictures, but because I think it's a way of speeding up the testing process. I know it's not particularly scientific, but if a paint is still good after a year in a bright window, then in my mind, I'd feel more confident about it hanging in a less bright space without fading, for many more years than that. Also though, I do have walls in my home which fall in direct sunlight, and because they're the only blank walls in their rooms, they do have artwork on, so in some cases it will actually be a reasonably decent test.
