A few (more) minutes of fun - with embossed watercolour backgrounds
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 июл 2024
- In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually. But sometimes a project needs a little MORE than just a few minutes... so in A Few (More) Minutes of Fun, you'll be invited along for a deeper dive into my creative process.
Today I'm playing with some embossing powder and watercolour paints, to create a quartet of backgrounds. I love this way of working in a series - I find it very playful and freeing. I hope you'll enjoy it too.
Wow - Bright White Embossing Powder (any white embossing powder will do)

❤❤❤ Please don't ever stop talking with us during your videos. I enjoy every aspect and have learned so much!
Thank you for that... I've no intention of stopping talking altogether! There are some videos which experiment with other ways already, and that could happen again - for instance here where I just put some music on and carried on playing... ruclips.net/video/AMisrNYVfRo/видео.html ... I will continue exploring different ways to share - knowing you can't please all of the people all of the time!! I'm so happy that you are enjoying the videos, and learning as you go. Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
❤your voice 🥰💕💕💕
Omg I love this. I love to hear people’s thought process.
That's great to know - thank you for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback.
Not only do I enjoy your freestyle technique in these videos, I find myself smiling as well as you interpret your final pieces. In effect, your words are as colorful as your imagery! ❤❤❤
Yes, there's a reason I'm called "Words and Pictures" - they both matter to me! Thank you so much for such a lovely comment.
I agree. Please don't stop chatting with us as you work! It makes the lesson more like a visit. So pleasant! Thank you for all the great ideas.
So happy you enjoy the thinking-out-loud - given there's a volume button, it's always optional, after all!! I'm delighted you are enjoying the creative journey, thank you.
I love watching you work. Enjoy your colours and bits of proper text rather than short commands.
I'm so happy to hear that ... that was exactly the idea between my original collections of quote stamps for PaperArtsy - to have word stamps with a bit more depth - poetry, philosophy, as well as wit and gentle humour. Thank you so much for your lovely comment - much appreciated.
I I like hearing your thought process as you create "I don't altogether mind that." I couldn't resist. Beautiful colors.
Yes, that sounds like classic British understatement when you think about it! So happy you are enjoying the artwork and the thinking-out-loud. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
I thoroughly enjoy watching and learning from your creative process. So inspirational.
That's wonderful to hear - thank you so much. I hope you'll have some of your own minutes of fun soon.

There is something about starting my busy day with a cup of coffee and one of your videos. This were stunning results.
Oh, I'm so pleased the videos are helping to get your day off to a good start (though I suspect the coffee is just as important in that!). Thank you so much for such a lovely comment.
Wow thank you I really learnt a lot by watching you . And the way you talk about what your actually doing and your thought process really really helps ❤
That's wonderful feedback to read - thank you so much. I'm happy you enjoy the "thinking-out-loud"!

Absolutely stunning, as always. I love watching you create and your process. Thank you so much for sharing. Xx
That's lovely feedback to read - thank you so much.
Just lovely! All my favourite colours, and that so very satisfying edge reveal.
There's something so magical about a masking tape peel and reveal, isn't there?! Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
Oh yes, I enjoyed this so much, thank you dear Alice❤❤
You're very welcome - I had a lovely time with these backgrounds, as you can probably tell.
Love these backgrounds , colours are great too. Thank you for sharing 😊

Playing catch up on videos. Love watching you add water color to paper!
It's so satisfying letting the colours do the work... so happy you're enjoying your catch-up time. Thank you so much for your company on this creative journey.
Love the music at the end.
Thank you - you can see the credit in the video description... it's from a composer called Asher Fulero who shares his work via the RUclips Audio Library for other creatives to use (and you can make a voluntary donation for it).
Ooohhhhh!!!! These are just gorgeous ❤❤❤!
Thank you... next step will probably be some collaging. I'll be sure to turn the camera on when I've worked out what to do next!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Your voice during these processes is so engaging and inspiring. More and more please❤️🇨🇦
That's wonderful to hear... thank you so much for such lovely feedback. Delighted you're enjoying the creative journey.
So beautiful. Thank you.

Lovely Lovely Lovely ❤❤❤
Thank you thank you thank you!!
These makes are absolutely gorgeous! I so enjoy your process videos💙💙
I'm so happy to hear that... thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Brilliant so glad I found you. I love embossing it’s always fascinated me when you heat set it. Than you for sharing your gorgeous art work x
Happy you found your way here too! Yes, there's something magical about that process of transformation, isn't there? Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
These backgrounds are gorgeous. I find the peel back of masking tape from watercolour backgrounds very satisfying and oft-times breathtaking 😍
I know - there's something magical about that peel and reveal moment, isn't there?! Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment.
Truly magical!
Oh, thank you for that!
so beautiful, love, love, love
Thank you - happy you enjoyed it!
When I began using embossing powder about 20+ years ago... I used my toaster! 😁🤣🥴 An expensive & awkward way to heat, but it's all I had. Appreciate my heat tool ❣️😘❤️
Oh, that is hilarious... I've seen people use their cars to run over a dry-embossing folder for the impression rather than use a die-cutting machine, but I've never come across using a toaster for heat-embossing. I can imagine having a heat tool is a treat after that!
Thanks so much for starting my day with a laugh!
Such a delight to watch you create. So glad I found your channel.
Happy you found your way here - welcome! I'm so happy you are enjoying the videos.
Beautiful, love the play of the watercolours. It’s not something I use very often but might need to dig them out. Thank you for sharing Alison
One of the things I love is that you are never completely in control - the watercolours have a mind of their own, and just allowing them to create their own magic is very freeing! Hope you have fun playing if you dig yours out... thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Just wonderful!! I enjoyed every single moment of this video. Thank you so much Alison for sharing the beauty and the details111🙏🙏🙏💙💙💙💙💙💙
Thank you so much for that - I'm delighted to have your company on this creative journey.

Oh, it definitely is... I love the magic of the melting!
Lovely yo see how this is created Alison. I love your talking through the process.
Thank you, Tineke - lovely, as always, to have your company.
SO pretty ❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Love this tutorial
Happy to hear that. Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know.
😊 what a wonderful Sunday morning treat to watch you create Alison!! It’s feels as though we’re all right there with you, beside you as you create so magically✨
I even found myself whispering to you “right there, right there..” as you stamped the last round floral on the bottom right quadrant right where I was wishing! 😂😂, feeling the satisfaction at the same time when you pulled them loose from the masking tape!
Brilliant✨🤗✨
Phew... glad I got the stamp in the right place for you!! Thank you for your lovely comment - you've put a big smile on my face... it's great to have your company on this creative journey. Happy Sunday to you.
Many, many years ago (decades) I formed the opinion that I did NOT like watercolor.
It looked too messy, sloppy, indistinct.
"Not for me" said I.
You, my dear lady, have completely transformed my opinion!
I LOVE this! So soft and dreamy.🥰
But now I am trying hard to talk myself out of buying paints and brushes....do I really need to travel down yet another crafty avenue?🎨
🙄😂🤷🏻♀️
And it's a long (and not cheap) avenue... but the watercolours have been an absolute joy to me. And I'm still exploring.
So happy to have changed your mind just a little on watercolours. Explore some more before deciding, of course. For added temptation, have you seen this video? ruclips.net/video/AMisrNYVfRo/видео.html

😉😄🤷🏻♀️
Thank you so much Alison, I’m so impressed by your artwork and your brilliant video, I’ve subscribed and given you a thumbs up too. ❤❤❤❤
Happy you found your way here - welcome! I'm delighted you're enjoying the videos here. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and subscribing. I hope you'll be inspired to have a few minutes of fun yourself!
I love everything you do and it's never overly complicated looking. I am waiting on wildflower stamps delivery and will try this. Just beautiful. Vicki
Next step will probably be to add some collaging - I'll make sure to turn the camera on when I do it! Hope you'll have fun playing with your wildflower stamps when they arrive. Thank you for your company on this creative journey.
These are so lovely. As always I love your video. I recently received two of your latest stamped sets Pressed Grasses and I’m thrilled with them. They are beautiful. Love the words and quotes you include with the grasses. I’ve admired your art work for quite a while and you never disappoint.
I'm so very happy to hear that. I hope you'll have a wonderful time creating with the stamps - do tag me in if you're sharing anything on Instagram - @w0rdsandp1ctures - I love to see what people get up to. Thank you so much for your company on this creative journey.
Thank you for the tip of using Archival ink when embossing detailed stamps. I also love the Tim Holtz silhouette flower stamp you love. To me it says “summer meadow” in a stamp. 😊
Absolutely - there's something about the simplicity of those stems that is just a treat! Happy you're finding useful tips in the videos - thank you so much for watching and commenting.
It makes my heart sing as I watch your beautiful art come to life, thankyou so much Alison
That's such a lovely comment - thank you so much for putting a big smile on my face.
I really love these Alison, you have inspired me to have a go today. Didn’t have archival so used distress inks and really chuffed how they came out. Thank you again x ❤
Oh, that's great to hear! Yes, stamping with Distress is no problem at all (as long as you don't get it wet afterwards)... and lots of colours to choose from too! So happy you had fun and enjoyed the results too.
As usual your art is so beautiful!! And I always love to hear your calming voice, especially today when has been a stressful day !! Thank ye Allison 🎉❤❤
Very happy if I've provided a moment of calm and relaxation on a difficult day. Thank you so much for your company on this creative journey.
Beautiful creation and I love how your sleeves echo the blues that you love to use!
Thank you so much. I'm so happy you like them - both the postcards and the sleeves! I have two tops the same, but in slightly different colours, and they've sort of become my "filming uniform".
Absolutely beautiful Alison, so enjoy all your tutorials thankyou so much for sharing your thoughts and expertise with us...😊
You're very welcome - thank you for such a lovely comment. Have a great weekend.
I spent a lovely hour early this morning playing along. I used your Violets and your Rosemary stamp and now love it so much I don't want to cover any of it up. I'm still learning to let you of the backgrounds lol!
I've seen it - it's completely beautiful as it is! You can always play with some stuff over the top without gluing anything down... just to see (watch out for tomorrow's Few Minutes of Fun for suggestions). But there's really no need!
I love watching you create. I love these . I've never used Archival ink for embossing, I'm going to give it a go now . Thank you ❤❤
Thank you, Mags... I find it gives me a more defined outline when I'm using fine detail stamps like the quotes. Have a great weekend.
These are SO beautiful and I love all of your explanations. I learn so much! Thank you
That's wonderful to hear - thank you so much for taking the time to let me know. You've put a big smile on my face.
Just got my EAB 40 & 41. Love them! Thanks for sharing your creativity.

Thank you - hope you'll be inspired to play!
Thank you Alison! I’ve been having so much fun using your stamps and trying out these different techniques.
Oh, that's wonderful to hear - so happy you are enjoying the stamps and the techniques.
I am learning so much from your tutorials. I would love to see the next steps you take with these backgrounds.
That's wonderful to know - so happy you are enjoying the creative journey. I will definitely make sure I switch the camera on once I work out what should happen next.
beautiful Alison!! Love hearing your process and these colors you used are just beautiful!! thank you!
So happy that you enjoyed the fun - thank you so much for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback!
They're lovely and airy. You make it seem so simple. BTW, your sleeves are very painterly looking too, with lovely colours. 🙂
Thank you - yes, I love the light and airy feel of these. And it honestly is simple... as long as you don't have fixed expectations of how it "should" look by the end, but rather just enjoy whatever turns up! Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
I absolutely love every video! You are an inspiration ❤
Thank you so much - what lovely feedback to read... you've put a big smile on my face.
Oh I so enjoyed this Alison and must get my paints out again x Your backgrounds turned out fabulous ❤

Just gorgeous 🥰 i couldn't put anything on these and cover that beautiful background
Happy you love them... the follow-up video adds just a little bit of minimal collaging over the top - not much gets covered up, I promise! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
so beautiful! I just find it totally relaxing to watch you work! TFS

@@w0rdsandp1ctures you’re welcome 😁😁😁
Beautiful 💙
Thank you!
I just discovered you on RUclips, and I did these cards with my supplies... Thank you for sharing! ❤ I'd love to see how you created the other, darker cards.
What fun to watch your videos...
Greetings from Germany!
Happy you found your way here - welcome! I'm not sure which other cards you mean, but mostly it's just a question of using other colours, according to what mood you are in, or what your favourite colours are. There are some cards there which use a different technique with gesso texture rather than embossing powder - and I'll be sharing that method some time soon - but I wouldn't describe them as darker, I think.
Anyway, I'm happy you enjoyed the videos - thank you so much for watching and commenting.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
Such beauties you created Alison! Your colour combinations are so enticing. What draws me in the most is the way you describe the mood or the scene you have in mind sprinkled with your ohoooo moments 😍😍😍❤️Lots of love from India!
What a lovely, thoughtful comment - thank you! I'm so happy you are enjoying the ohooo moments as much as I am. Have a great weekend.

Thank you!
A quartets of quartets!
Your artwork just amazes me.
That's put a big smile on my face - thank you so much for your company on this creative journey.
Beautiful backgrounds, Alison. Thank you for sharing. Watching someone using embossing powder was what first got me hooked on paper crafting - it was so exciting! I love the way that watercolour backgrounds are never the same twice; similar, but not the same.
I completely agree about embossing powder - it's like alchemy, and I've hooked a number of visiting non-crafters by getting them to try it out! And yes to the watercolours too - I love that they have a mind of their own. Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment.
These are stunning ❤
Thank you so much! Happy you enjoyed it.
They tuned out lovely and my type of colours. I’ve just come across your channel so I’m off to check out previous vids
Happy you found your way here - welcome! - and I hope you enjoy whatever else you find to watch. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely comment.
Beautiful work and lovely colors. I really love watching you work❤
Thank you - that's such lovely feedback to read!
These quartets are wonderful 🎉
Thank you so much - happy you love them! Next step will probably be some collaging... so watch out for that.
Very pretty. You can turn your discarded but partially stamped masking tape into diy washi type tape. Just keep stamping on it and gluing on pieces of napkin or printed tissue and voila! TFS
Thank you. Yes, I did exactly that for one of my recent stamp launch samples - used the tape exactly as it was to be the first step in a journal page. I do it very often, as I did in fact mention - but there's only so much you can fit into a few minutes of fun (and this was an extended edition already!!). Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
You're weird- but so am I and I really enjoy your show.
Happy to embrace my obsessions and eccentricities! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
New here! This is beautiful ❤
Happy you found your way here - welcome!
These backgrounds are so gorgeous 😍I am looking forward to see what your next steps are gonna be with these beauties😃 I enjoyed it very much to see how you made them, even so much that I use this for inspiration for my journal page, that I am gonna make rigth now. So thanks a bunch for the inspiration and have a wonderful weekend, Alison ❣️
That's great... and yes, of course you can use the same technique to create backgrounds in all sorts of projects, including journal pages. You have a great weekend too.
I love hearing your thoughts
Thank you... thinking out loud is becoming second nature!!
I love this. It's so very pretty. Can't wait for part 2. Hugs to you from California USA.❤
So happy you enjoyed it - I'll make sure the camera is on when I work out what needs to happen next!
@w0rdsandp1ctures I did 8 small watercolors. 4 grungy and 4 pretty. Some I liked too much to embellish, but most are being collaged. Can't wait to see what you do. I will post pics on Instagram and tag you.❤️
@@RockyRoadCreationsbyDiana Sounds wonderful - so happy you've been having fun with the technique.
Would love to see more videos like this. 😊 These give me an idea for my week seven ICAD's (Index Card A Day challenge run by Daisy Yellow) for those who have never heard of icad.
So happy to hear that you're inspired to play - and yes, obviously the technique can be transferred to ICADs, journal pages, whatever your preferred substrate is. Have fun with it.
