  • A Few Minutes of Fun
    In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually, depending what we're playing with.
    Today I've got the crackle paste out again, and I'm using Distress products to create a distressed rusted look on this pair of tag backgrounds. There are so many ways to create rustiness, and we'll dig into more of them in the future...
    Products used for the backgrounds:
    Plain manila tags size 8
    Ranger Opaque Crackle Texture Paste
    Ranger Translucent Distress Grit Paste
    Tim Holtz Distress Spray Stain - Hickory Smoke
    Tim Holtz Distress Inks - Crackling Campfire, Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain, Rusty Hinge
    Tim Holtz Distress Oxides - Gathered Twigs
    Tim Holtz Distress Crayons - Vintage Photo, Ground Espresso, Mulled Cider (from the Halloween Pearl Set 5)
    I bought all the products used in this video myself.

      What great feedback - I'm so happy to hear that. It's the perfect balance you mention - guidance, but freedom to improvise - so if I'm getting that right I'm a happy woman! Thanks so much for your company on this creative journey.

      it might be mine too! There will be other rusty recipes along soon... I do it in lots of different ways, and Distress might not be my favourite - but it seemed like a good place to start, given lots of people tend to have at least some Distress products in their stash! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

      Happy you enjoyed the crackle... there is already a follow-up adding tissue (find that one here: ruclips.net/video/5mXswUtDO3I/видео.html ) and some time soon there will be a new crackle recipe using different ingredients, followed by some stamping onto crackle.
      Thanks so much for your lovely comment.

    My "cream cheese" crackle layers are drying and I am waiting patiently (not) until tomorrow to start the rust process! It is so valuable to be able to watch you work, especially being able to see you achieve not only the texture of the rust but also the layers of color and of all of the distress products you have used to make rust happen. And, you did so brilliantly, Alison. Thank you, so very much for all of your time, talent, humor and love in bringing all of us these few minutes of fun. XO Gina

      Brilliant - I'm sure you'll get delicious rusty results with your cream cheese crackle! There will be other rusty recipes to come, but I thought Distress was a good place to start, given plenty of people have some in their stash. It was my first time using the Spiced Cider crayon, and I'm not sure I would include it again... a bit too pink for my rusty liking!! Happy Sunday to you.

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.

      Obviously, I'm a little biased (!) but I think PaperArtsy produce some of the best rubber stamps around, both for quality and the variety of designs on offer. There really is something for all tastes. And I've yet to find a chalk paint I prefer to their Fresco Finish paints.

      So happy you enjoyed this rusty crackle - and yes, I'll always take the easy path to make the tag hole. If I've got a pair of scissors in my hand, why go digging for the hole punch?! It looks as though tissue paper is going to win the race to go first, but we'll be doing some stamping on crackle later on in that case, so you'll definitely get to see both eventually!
      Happy Sunday to you.

    Hello Alison! Sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well but glad to know you’re on the mend… THANK YOU for this RUSTY Crackle video!!! It was a treat to watch as you added layer upon layer of color to get the depth needed for a dimensional rust. I’ll look forward to the next segment when you add another layer of interest to your tags - because of the uneven surface of the crackle I was curious to see stamping first but since I have all of the PaperArtsy tissue papers, that will also be enjoyable to see. I will put ‘playing with mediums’ on my future list… I think my Fun Playtime this weekend will be pulling out my Fresco Paints to paint those 3x5 Manila cards as well as starting my February YCS collage pages in my 8x8 journal (I finished January’s already)… Thanks again for all you do to encourage and inspire. Until next time, take care and have a wonderful weekend! 🙂

      Sounds like an excellent weekend playtime plan. The key to stamping on crackle is to be prepared to live with imperfection... I LOVE imperfection, so it works out well for me! I'm tallying the votes and at the moment it looks as though tissue paper is going to take it... but we will be doing both in the long run anyway!
      Thanks as always for your lovely comments, and your company on this creative journey. Have a great weekend.

    It's my understanding (per Tim Holtz), and also my experience, that Distress Crayons are only temporarily "permanent" when dry in the sense that when they're dry, they don't move. However, if you introduce water or other wet media, they will start to move and blend again. Tim says this isn't a problem for him since his art isn't usually getting wet, but it is important to note for potential users that they aren't a truly permanent medium. The only permanent color medium in the Distress line is the paint, all others remain water reactive unless sealed.

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes, that's fair... though they're a lot harder to move once they've dried than, for instance, the Distress Inks. For instance, if I use a matte medium to seal the Crayons, they'll pretty much stay put while I do that, whereas the Distress Inks will go all over the place as I apply it. And of course all of them are craft products, not fine art supplies, so in terms of permanence and lightfastness, they're not going to be on that same level, so yes, that's important to be aware of.

      It's great crackle, but there are other equally good ones, I think. The Decoart Media Crackle Paste and Media Crackle Paint are both excellent. But if you're in a dry climate, then I guess the same problem might occur. I suppose you've tried Tim Holtz's trick of pressing cling film (plastic wrap) down onto the paste before you put the lid on, to keep the moisture in?
      There will be other rusty recipes to come soon... I thought Distress products were a good place to start, since lots of people have them... but they're not necessarily my favourite way to do it!

      @w0rdsandp1ctures I just ordered crackle paste. I have the Decoart one step crackle, and it's really good for very fine crackle. Have you heard of Modern Masters? They make an awesome rust reactive paint. Also, copper and bronze reactive paints. I love them, but they are quite speedy. I love your tags and love that idea of putting rust where you wrap the wire around. Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful inspiration.

      I don't think I've come across Modern Masters, no... I'm off to do some googling! I do have some copper and bronze (and something else, iron I think) metal reactive paints - with a reagent (right?) to start the chemical reaction. I must dig those out before I go mad ordering anything!
      I should have put the word Media in front of those Decoart crackles (I've edited now to add it, in case anyone else reads it!)... I think their Media line (originally designed by Andy Skinner who is an amazing paint magician for distressed techniques) is a cut above a lot of their other products. These... shop.decoart.com/decoart-media-crackles - and the Media Fluid Acrylics are brilliant too. Anyway, you've probably done enough shopping for one day!!

    “Keep up your bright swords, for the dew will rust them.” Othello, by Wm. Shakespeare
    I had no quotes about rust in my Commonplace book, so I will have to add this one.
    You make this look easy, but I think it is probably harder than you make it look. I look forward to giving this technique “a go” though. My budget is busted, but, WooHoo!, I still have half a jar of crackle paste left in my stash. 🙂😅 Cheers from America to the Czech Republic 🇺🇸 🇨🇿

      Othello is an extraordinary play - one of my favourites.
      There are lots of great rust quotes if you have a quick google. On my blog, I've always ended each post with a couple of relevant quotes, so with all the rusty things I've made over the years, I've had to go looking for a few!
      Shakespeare's got several for us (I probably used those up first on the blog, including the Othello one!)... Juliet stabbing herself: "Oh happy dagger, this is thy sheath; there rust and let me die." Falstaff exhausted from too much fighting and wanting a little rest: "I were better to be eaten to death with a rust than to be scoured to nothing with perpetual motion." Venus trying to seduce Adonis by suggesting he'd do better to put his good looks to use by ravishing her (!): "Foul cankering rust the hidden treasure frets, but gold that's put to use more gold begets."
      And here's one - not Shakespeare - but appropriate to the day: "Sunday clears away the rust of the whole week." Joseph Addison
      Happy non-rusty Sunday to you!

      And thank you SO much for unleashing all those Shakespeare quotes! I especially loved the one from Venus to Adonis. I love Shakespeare and look forward to reading and watching more plays after I retire later this year. Henry IV parts I and II, and Julius Caesar have been my favorites so far. I look forward to reading King Leer next. Shakespeare is under attack here in the USA. I believe it was the University of Pennsylvania who removed a Shakespeare mural in the English Department, and replaced it with some unknown poet from the Caribbean. There is a reason why I had never heard of this other poet, and a reason why Shakespeare is still relevant and loved centuries later. Outside of the Bible, NO ONE has documented every condition of humanity so insightfully and beautifully. He is incomparable.

    My ranger crackle paste I purchased, and used, would give the lightest almost “airy” crackle and just completely flake off and disintegrate with barely touching it. It also was soooo tiny of crackle, not very deep crackle. I was so disappointed, because I couldn’t touch it let alone place any inks or art on it without it just flaking off completely. I never forced heat to dry it, I just let it naturally dry. I wonder if I just bought a bad batch. Thank you for showing us yours. I really do think I may have just a bad batch. 🤔
    As always a pleasure and sheer joy watching a video of yours. 🙏🏻🙂

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  2 месяца назад +2

      Hmmm... interesting. Yes, maybe it was just a bad batch. Or could it have got a bit dried out? I can't say I've ever had that problem with it, but if you live in a very dry climate you might need to look after it slightly differently. Tim Holtz himself (who lives in Arizona) presses down some clingfilm (plastic wrap - whatever you might call it) to the surface of his pastes before putting the lid on, to preserve moisture better. Another possibility might be to make sure you prepare the surface with something like gesso to give the crackle a better chance of adhering. That might help.
      Maybe try another brand if you're feeling cross about that one... the DecoArt Media Crackle Paste is great, as is their Crackle Paint which is a slightly runnier consistency. Crackle Glaze is different (I'm aiming to cover some of this in future videos) - it's a clear, shiny topcoat crackle.

      @@w0rdsandp1ctures thank you, I will definitely start trying that suggestion out of the plastic wrap. I live in a lot higher humidity level, Texas. But, I would like to give it another go seeing it very well could have been the texture itself I placed it on maybe. If I recall correctly I used it on watercolor paper. Maybe 🤔 I’ve used it on card stock. This was so many years ago, when I first tried it, then I tried it again, I can’t recall, but a fair amount of time ago. It did the same result. I believe that was on either card stock, or mixed media paper. Each time I’ve always just let it naturally fully dry. Unfortunately, each time it was same difficulty and issue. It also was the same exact tub of paste. It hadn’t dried out so I was still able to use it to my grateful surprise. I figured I would try it again one more time after being inspired I’m sure by an artist using it on a channel. Alas, ending in the same anticlimactic result. I tend to use Golden crackle paste almost because I absolutely love the depth of cracks it leaves. When you add a heat gun to dry it, it also changes how well it will deepen the cracks. It’s fun to play around and do both ways with that brand of paste. Have you ever tried it? It’s marvelous. I will try and give the other brand you mentioned a go as well. You can never have too much many kinds of pastes and crackle pastes and textures in my humble opinion. Hahaha
      Splendid, I look forward with great anticipation on the next videos of artistic expression, creativity, inspiration and education that you provide. Your channel is such a blessing.
      As for the top picked choice, I am not bothered at all if my choice isn’t the winner. If I was allowed to choose “both” as my option I would have.😉 However, I’m delighted to know that “both” will eventually make its way onto your channel.
      If I may ask another question, the shadow box type of window art you created and showed in the beginning, it was beautiful weathered and cracked along the edges and backside and front, just gorgeous. What brand of paste was used to create that effect? That was absolutely beautiful. Thank you again.🙏🏻☺️

      Happy you enjoyed it, thank you.
      Really the point of tags for me is the making of them, not what happens afterwards. It's about the process, the creative journey, learning, discovering, growing - playing with products and with composition. It's a substrate where I feel free to play without pressure, and since they are small you don't need much time to come to a happy completion. And then those ideas, techniques, colour combinations, compositional habits get built into other artworks... journals, handmade books, paintings, altered art - I do a lot of different stuff... you can see more on Instagram @w0rdsandp1ctures instagram.com/w0rdsandp1ctures/
      For the tags themselves, they might end up as part of art journal pages, or occasionally a card-topper (though I really don't make cards much); they can be framed just as they are for display, either alone or in a series (I often create in pairs or trios or quartets or sets) or hung up; they can be used as bookmarks or as tags (which they are!) to decorate a gift.
      Lots of them live in little crates and baskets in my studio, for flipping through for inspiration or to show visitors what I get up to.
      You can see what I mean here: ruclips.net/video/EwkvmSSKvb4/видео.html
      That's a long answer, but I hope it gives you some idea of why you see so many of us creating with them! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Hope you're having a great Sunday.

      So happy you're enjoying the videos - thank you for another lovely comment. I'm thrilled you like the rosehips because those are my own botanical sketches, and they feature on one of my PaperArtsy stamp sets - Eclectica Alison Bomber EAB26 Rosehips Edition - shop.paperartsy.co.uk/eclectica-alison-bomber-set-26-rosehips-edition-9483-p.asp
      (I'm adding the PaperArtsy stockist list just in case you're tempted. Of the Canadian stores, none of them have the Rosehips in stock at the moment, but several carry my designs, so if you get in touch, they should be happy to order the Rosehips in for you (Scrapbook Centrale, Scrap Addicts, Paper Art Creations, Paper and Ink Boutique, Scrapbooking Fairies). As independent stockists, it helps them to know there's demand!

    Love watching and learning from you Alison. Can you tell me what type of wire you rust? What gauge is it typically please? Appreciate it!

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  6 дней назад

      Some of it is bought pre-rusted from online craft outlets. I'm afraid I'm not sure what gauge it is... maybe 20 or 22. In fact, I've got some thinner and some thicker, so maybe I've got some of each of those. The one I rust myself is just plain garden wire I buy in the little shop in the village here - I don't think it even mentions what gauge it is on the label. It's no good buying the green covered wire, of course - it has to be the naked metal. Sorry I can't be more help.

      I'm so happy you enjoyed it and found it useful too!
      It's a silicone craft mat - this particular one is by Wow Embossing Powders, and calls itself the Premium Embossing Craft Mat. Wow are a UK company, so you'd have to google to see if you can find it near you. But any silicone mat will do the same thing... those brown silicone baking sheets will work. I always have one of those in my travelling stash when I'm working away from home.

      It's actually rosehips, and on these tags it's a stamp - one of my own botanical sketches, featured on my PaperArtsy stamp set EAB26 Rosehips Edition. But the same sketch also now appears on my Printed Tissue by PaperArtsy, but in a much larger size. It's the tissue paper you can see in the large journal spread in this video - in which I'm actually painting the rosehips in the top left corner: ruclips.net/video/AMisrNYVfRo/видео.html
      PaperArtsy has stockists worldwide (listed by country in the link below) but not all stockists stock the full PaperArtsy range (which is huge), so if you have trouble tracking them down, let me know which country you are in and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction .blog.paperartsy.co.uk/p/find-stockist.html

      As mentioned a couple of times in the video, I suggested people let me know whether they wanted me to carry on these tags by using stamps or by using tissue paper... Tissue paper won, and that video will be coming up in this Saturday's Few Minutes of Fun.
      But also there will be other rust recipes in the future. Distress is not the only way to do it (and probably not my favourite method), but I thought it was a good place to start since many people have some Distress products in their stash.

    I absolutely love all your tags (and everything else! ❤) .. your tags are just plain manila ones?? Not any kind of mixed media? I have some TH tags bu5 they seem a bit smaller than yours ..

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  Месяц назад +1

      They are plain manila tags, yes, and a regular size 8, the same size as the Ranger size 8 tags - 3 inches x 6 and a quarter inches (which is around 7.5 or 8cm by just under 16cm). I've just been and held mine next to one of the Ranger Media Cardstock size 8s, and it's definitely the same size.
      But they're not manila like, for instance, manila file folders (which can be made of quite rough, highly-absorbent manila card). These have a lovely smooth sheen just like the Ranger manila tags. Sadly, the independent online UK craft shop I used to buy them from in bulk has now closed down (too much competition from giant online corporations) so when my current supply runs out, I'm going to have to try to find somewhere else to source them.
      Happy to hear you love the work here. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

    Can you add color to the crackle paste or does it change the composition of the paste and make not work as well?

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  2 месяца назад

      To be honest, I've never tried it... I always add my colour over the top. You can paint it (use watery washes in layers or glazes or translucent paint - fully opaque will cover some of your crackle if you're not careful), or tint it with inks.
      My guess is that yes, if you alter the composition of the crackle paste before applying it, you will be altering its ability to crackle - probably not preventing it altogether, but you might get less impactful texture. But the best answer to your question would be to try it! "What if?" is the essence of creativity...
      Happy Sunday to you!

      Absolutely! As I say in the video there are many different ways to create a rusty effect. Distress products are just one (and not necessarily my favourite). There will be more rusty recipes coming soon - and there will definitely be paint involved sooner or later - but in the meantime, you should definitely explore with what you've got.
