- A Few Minutes of Fun
In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually, depending what we're playing with.
Today I'm playing with a favourite technique of mine - using paint as a resist to create texture within a background. I'm stamping with paint (we'll look at using stencils another time) - including tips about looking after your stamps - and using different ink formulations over the top.

Obviously, I don't have to buy my own PaperArtsy stamp designs, but everything else used in this video I purchased myself.
I love this technique of the paint resist-thanks for reminding me to do it more often!
Yes, it's one of my favourite resists, because of the lovely worn, weathered look it gives you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love these techniques! Definitely going to add these to my mixed media toolbox. Thanks for sharing. 😍
That's great - it's an oldie but a goodie, this technique, and I love the faded, weathered look it gives. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, and I hope you'll have fun playing.
I have not used paint as a resist before, now I will have to try. Thanks so much!
I love the faded, worn effect you get from it (rather than the full on resist of, say, embossing powder)... hope you'll have fun trying it out.
Blessings from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you! And to you...
Oh oh oh oh!!! Is my comment to these. Love it when you say that. Greetings from Belgium. Hilde
It seems to be becoming my catchphrase!! Happy you are enjoying the words as well as the pictures - thank you!
Just beautiful. I love your style and color usage. Thank you for sharing your process.Vicki
So happy to read such a lovely comment - thank you.
Oh the possibilities with this technique! You’ve got my mind spinning with ideas! I often use a gel plate as my “stamp pad” when stamping with paint. Then I can also pull a print! So much fun! Thanks for the inspiration!❤❤❤
Great idea with the gel plate as your "pad". The other thing I often do is stamp again on some spare card after spritzing the stamp with water to clean it. You get a lovely soft watery impression... and then you can finish the clean up afterwards.
Happy you enjoyed the video - and thanks so much for your lovely comment.
Wonderful technique. Thank you for teaching us to make these beauties.
So happy you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment.
Great tutorial! I love your videos, they are not too short, not too long and get the process explained clearly. Thank you!!
That's great feedback, thank you so much - delighted to hear they are hitting the mark for you! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you so much Alison, do you know why I love ❤️ watching you create these amazing and stunningly beautiful tags. Because you are so down to earth and normal too. I absolutely love ❤❤❤❤❤ the tags, you are so inspiring and clever and very very talented too. You’re my kind of person too. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤❤❤
That's a lovely comment to read, thank you... One recent commenter likes me because I'm "weird" and you like me because I'm "down to earth and normal"!! Probably the truth lies somewhere in between...
I'm so happy that you are enjoying the artwork and the inspiration here - hope you'll be inspired to have your own few minutes of fun soon.
Paint resist is always such an effective technique. Great colour combos too! Nice tie in with your top.....I like the look of the sleeves, would love to see the full top - I think it would look fabulous.
Yes, it's a great technique - an oldie but a goodie. I love the weathered, faded look it gives you. The rest of the top is a sort of wrapped bolero type shape... I have it in two colourways (blue-green and blue-blue!), both bought at least 30 years ago, and still favourites.
Thank you for your lovely comment and have a great Sunday.
Love the way how you add paint to the stamps! Great to see a new trick! And of course super effects all round! xx
I find it gives me more control for adding the paint than other methods I've tried. It's an old favourite for lots of us as a technique, I know - but it's a goodie!
Four delightful tags, I love them! Always a good reminder to stamp for the resist!💕🇨🇦
I love the effect of a paint resist - happy you do too!
@@w0rdsandp1ctures 👍🏼💕
Your artwork is amazing! I enjoy watching your videos so much. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us!
That's such a heart-warming comment to read... thank you so much! Really happy to hear you are enjoying the fun.
LOVE LOVE LOVE watching all these techniques! It is so fun to hear the excitement in your voice, and it is ever so contagious! TYFS
That's delightful feedback to read, thank you so much. I'm really happy you're enjoying the videos, and that you're finding the inspiration infectious - have fun playing!
Hello Alison! I couldn’t wait to say, YAY on your newest release that I just saw on the PaperArtsy Blog… LOVE all three of the Stamp Sets - couldn’t pick a favorite… LOVE all of your samples… read every word and enjoyed every picture! Congratulations! I will look forward to playing with them as soon as they’re available. Have a great day! 🙂
Oh, thank you so much, Sue - I'm delighted you love them! They are already available from PaperArtsy stockists worldwide... just check the list at the foot of the blogpost to find one near you. (Not all PA stockists stock all PA products - so if you have trouble tracking them down, let me know where you are, and I can probably point you in a helpful direction!)
Happy indeed I do so enjoy your bursts of laughter when you achieve a finish you like! Thanks as always for sharing your wonderful creative journey!💙🤎💙🤎💙🤎💙🤎
Thank you for that lovely feedback. Yes, there was a very good moment in this one... you can tell I was having fun!!
Love your joy and enthusiasm! ❤
That's lovely to hear - thank you so much.
Merci beaucoup ces quelques minutes créatives, j'ai appris une nouvelle technique aujourd'hui et j'ai adoré !
De rien! I'm so happy you've found a new technique to play with, and I hope you'll have lots of fun exploring its possibilities. Merci beaucoup for your lovely comment.
I so love this technique...I'll be trying this tomorrow morning...thank you for showing us this ❤
Oh, that's great to hear! I hope you'll have lots of fun with it. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Lovely technique. Thank you Alison. 💙 🩵 🤎
I always love the results of this technique - an oldie but a goodie. However imperfect they are, they look good!
its mesmerizing watching people play with thier colours and that Uncharted Mariner is such a luscious blue thanks Alison for your generous enthusiasm x
What lovely feedback, thank you for that! I couldn't agree more about Uncharted Mariner... I love it! Thanks for watching and commenting.
These are some of my favorite videos! So much information
Very happy to hear that... thank you so much for the great feedback - much appreciated.
I’ve wanted to know how this look was achieved for ages! Thanks Alison! This is so helpful! I’m excited to have a go now lol
Excellent - happy to have quenched your curiosity about the technique... have fun with it - it's a beauty! Thanks for another lovely comment.
Happy start of my Saturday with coffee and watching you create these beautiful tags. 🤩
So happy to kick off your weekend well - thanks so much for taking the time to let me know.
Thank you so much for sharing, I knew there was a possibillity with some sort of resist thing, but I didn't know how. Now I know! Now I can try it myself. Thank you for showing how to.
That's great to hear, thank you! The paint resist gives you a lovely subtle effect. You can also use embossing powders, of course (which we'll do one of these days in a Few Minutes of Fun episode too), but they tend to be much more prominent. Have fun playing!
Allison I just love your style is crafting. lol stayed up late last night watching a bunch of your previous videos. I’m hooked. ❤thank you
Oh, what lovely feedback, thank you. I'm glad to have whiled away your evening, but I hope I didn't cost you too much sleep! Happy you found your way here, and thank you so much for taking the time to comment.
These are just beautiful. I loved the effect of the spritz and flick at the end. ❤❤❤
Yes, that final touch of extra texture is a real treat, isn't it? Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
A new process for me and I love them! They’re just perfect!
Thank you so much - it's a lovely technique so I hope you'll have fun playing. (Just make sure to clean those stamps quickly!)
Fantastic idea!!! Especially great for those who don’t have embossing powders and heat gun.
Absolutely... there are a number of ways to create a resist, and they all give slightly different effects (embossing powder a little glossier, this a little more weathered, and so on). But with no heat tool, this one is still easily achievable. Hope you'll have fun playing with it soon. Thanks so much for your lovely comment.
Such subtle, beautiful backgrounds. Your color combinations are beautiful. 😊
Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
I truly enjoyed your few minutes of fun on this beautiful Saturday morning! Thanks for always sharing such wonderful techniques, with all of us. I have been enjoying myself and have been finally making more use of my inks! Thank you Alison!❤
Oh, that's wonderful to hear... I feel happy on behalf of your inks that they are coming out to play more often!! Thank you so much for another lovely comment, and have a lovely rest-of-weekend.
Oh I love these Alison! Thank you for sharing! 🩵
So happy to hear that - thanks for taking the time to let me know.
im learning so much from this great videos. they are short enough for me to realize i do have time for all this wonderful mixed media. so thanks!
That's wonderful feedback to read, thank you so much. And yes, you don't need to complete a whole project in one go... by working a few minutes at a time, you can have lots of mixed media fun which will add up to amazing projects before you know it!
Thank you for this video. Those are beautiful.
Very happy you enjoyed it - thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
Thank you for this tutorial. I love it and can’t wait to try it!
Great - I hope you'll have fun playing! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Fantastic tutorial, Alison. Thank you fir sharing your technique 👏
Thank you - I don't think I can really claim it as "my" technique - though I can't any longer remember where I picked it up along the way (probably Tim Holtz...) but I'm very happy you enjoyed the video. Have fun playing!
Excellent tutorial! Beautiful results. I really like that you do the close up of your final artwork and products used. Brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much for this lovely feedback... I'm delighted you are enjoying the videos here.
I love the stamping with the white paint oh my, those lovely combinations! I think the ones with the unchartered mariner were my favorite. Somewhere I saw a piece of art that you did with a spinning round cheese box and your violet stamp set. It came in the mail today and it’s even better than it looks online. I have been looking for 20 years at least for a real good stamp for some wild violets. I got a few, but still not what I wanted. I wanted wild ones! Violets have always been one of my favorites, even as a child. For some reason, I had given up looking. There are not one but 2 violets on the stamp sheet. I’m in heaven. I AM going to find that cheese box. Am I crazy? Did I dream it? Wow, I just found your see it move section on Instagram. Very cool. Hugs, treen 💕💕💕
I'm so happy that you're so happy with your violet stamps!! Absolutely delighted to have solved your 20-year search... I'm grinning from ear to ear as I type this. Glad you found the cheesebox on IG - but it's also here in the Shorts, which is probably where you saw it: ruclips.net/user/shortsgXbGKKE7aAE
Happy you like these tags too - it's one of my favourite techniques - an oldie but a goodie! Happy Sunday to you.
I love this! Seems to me a did something similar with white pigment ink years and years ago. Thank you for putting colors used in description box👍💕
Yes, there's nothing new about the technique itself - an oldie, but a goodie - and you could definitely get a similar effect with white pigment ink... or indeed any colour of paint. No need for it to be white! Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for commenting.
Delicious darlin! ❤❤❤ 😊💚🇦🇺xxx
Thanks so much!
These tags are gorgeous!! TFS! Love your amazing channel!!
It's a great technique to play with. Thank you so much for your lovely comment, I'm delighted you're enjoying the videos here.
Love the first two when they are all laid out together at the end. Deliciously grunge and gorgeous thank you for sharing
So happy you enjoyed it - thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Oooh such a beautiful technique. Uncharted mariner is such a great color. I need to get your stamps as an herbalist I make so many herbal inspired books. Culpeper is such a great body of work!! Thank you for sharing and inspiring
I agree completely about Uncharted Mariner... and Culpeper. It does sound as though the botanical stamps would be right up your street! Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
I do enjoy someone else having a play, it’s relaxing to watch! TFS
That's lovely to hear, thank you!
@@w0rdsandp1ctures you’re very welcome😁😁
As always so beautiful and informative.
That's lovely feedback to read... thank you so much.
Beautiful tags! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome - happy you like them.
Absolutely stunning backgrounds! ❤❤❤
Thank you - it's a lovely technique!
You have so given me the inspiration I needed in this video! I have just found your amazing journey!! So thankyou!💕 from another Alison xx
Oh, that is great to hear. It's the best possible response if someone is inspired to go and have their own few minutes (or hours) of fun! Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
This was a wonderful video! Thanks so much😊❤
So happy you enjoyed it - thank you for taking the time to let me know.
Thank you Alison! Didn’t know of this technique, will definitely give it a try.
It's such a great way to create a resist... hope you'll have fun playing.
I had so much fun watching you. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful tutorial.
That's such a lovely comment to read - thank you. Delighted you had fun watching, I definitely had fun playing!
Thanks, Alison. These 4are delightful.
Thank you for watching and commenting - happy you like them.
Wow - wow!!! 😍😍 How beautiful !!!!
Such a great work!! I think I have to buy Distress Inks. 😅. Thank you very much for giving us another wonderful lesson!
Lovely greetings Helga
They really are very special inks with amazing properties. As you can tell, I love them - in fact, they are responsible for me starting this whole journey into visual art. If you decide to try some out, I would say just start with two or three of your favourite colours. Then if you enjoy working with them, you can start to build your collection.
Thank you for your lovely comment, and I hope you have a great weekend.
I am new to your channel and love how you show in detail how to finish your project. I learned something new! Your personality shines and I will keep following you. Thank you for sharing your talent.
That's such wonderful feedback - thank you so much. I'm delighted you're enjoying the videos, and so happy to welcome you on board for this creative journey. Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing.
You are so delightful to listen to! I love your sharing of ideas..definitely a follower of you! Thank you❤️
That's lovely feedback, thank you so much. Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing - welcome!
Hello! I really enjoy this technique, thank you for sharing!
That's great to know - thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
beautiful tags!! thanks for sharing your process!! Love them!
Happy you like them - thank you so much for your lovely comment.
Absolutely stunning!
Thank you so much.
Always a joy learning from your videos. I’ll definitely try this resist technique. Lovely colors and background music. (My studio chair squeaks, so I see I’m in good company!!)
It's a lovely technique - an oldie, but a goodie - I hope you have fun with it. I think I figured out it's one of the shelf sets on the desk squeaking against one of the others... so hopefully I can make sure it doesn't happen next time (if I remember to move it!). Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Fascinating! Thanks for this tutorial. 🐦
So happy you enjoyed it - thanks so much for taking the time to let me know.
What an amazing technique. This is my first video from your channel. I'm really excited to learn from you. Thank you for amazing inspiration
So happy you found your way here... welcome! Great to hear that you are inspired by what you've been watching.
“Indistinctness is my forte.” J.M.W. Turner
Thank you for this video and more importantly for turning (yes, cringy pun intended) me onto a Turner painting I had never heard of: Rain, Steam and Speed. It’s brilliant and I love it.
I get so much out of your content. Thank you so much. Love the new mid-week ink series as well and I look forward to expanding my knowledge base in all types of ink mediums.
❤ 🎨 🖼️ Cheers from California, USA 🇺🇸
What a truly wonderful Turner quote... thank you so much for sharing that. Happy to have offered up Rain, Steam and Speed to you in return (did I name it correctly - I said Wind instead of Steam I think, maybe, did I?). So happy you are enjoying the videos so much - that's great. "Midweek Inking" has already expanded itself to Craft Supplies Deep Dive, so it will be more than just ink mediums, so I hope you'll enjoy exploring those too.
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment.
These are awesome Alison! Gonna give the paint resist a go!
It's a lovely technique to get a really distressed and worn look - which obviously makes me very happy! Hope you'll have fun with it.
Love your techniques!!!
Thank you... I can't really claim them as "my" techniques - they've been doing the rounds for a while, for the most part, especially thanks to the amazing Tim Holtz - but I do put my own spin on them! Very happy you are enjoying the fun, either way.
I would love to see how you store/display all these wonderful creations! It seems like you could have your own museum!
There are quite a few Shorts with glimpses of my studio as well as my tag crates, so you can get an idea. But yes, I also enjoy displaying some of them on the shelves so that the space I'm working in is full of inspiration! Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
Beautiful thank you for sharing
You're very welcome - thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated.
Thanks, Allison for the reminder about the paint resist technique! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve done this, so I can’t wait to grab my white paint and give it a go, once again! Great weekend to you!
It's an oldie but a goodie - I love the effect of the matte paint resist giving that weathered distressed look. Don't forget to try other colours too, besides white!! Have a great weekend too.
AGAIN ANOTHER AMAZING VIDEO!!
Thank you so much - happy you're enjoying them!
Hah, just got done doing lots of stamping for emphera, getting them back out again , ye have such great ideas !!❤😊
So you'll have even more ephemera by the time you're done! Happy to have inspired you to fit in some more stamping playtime. Thanks so much for your lovely comment - made me smile!
Such breathtaking results! Will have to try this technique. :)
Hope you'll have fun with it... thanks so much for watching and for your lovely comment. I'm so happy you are inspired to play!
So beautiful, every time i love your colors 💙 "que du bonheur" de vous voir travailler --> only happiness to see you work
Thank you so much for the lovely comment, and for the translation... though my French can actually manage that much! Hope you are having a lovely week.
@@w0rdsandp1ctures Great if you speak French well👍I had noticed some expression sometimes but not knowing if you spoke it. It’s simple for me since I am French. Good weekend too 😊
My German is better than my French, but I can cope pretty well in French too (especially when it's written rather than being spoken very quickly!). Sadly both of them are better than my Czech, which is what I need where I'm living now... but I'm working on it!
Wow, that was fascinating! I really enjoyed watching your process. Thank you for the clear and lovely explanations of your choices. You are so lovely to watch and listen to. Your enthusiasm is infectious! xoxo
What lovely feedback - that's put a big smile on my face. So happy that you are enjoying both the words and the pictures. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Oh, I like the subtlety of the paint resist. And these colours make me happy. I think I'll be doing this tomorrow 😍
Yes, I love that you can have that subtle matte look to the resist. (I enjoy a glossy embossing powder resist too, but this is a different look for a different effect!). Hope you have fun playing - and don't forget you can use other colours besides white, which gives you endless variations and possibilities!
Unstoppable delightful indeed.. ♥
Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comment.
Comme c’est beau encore une fois. Il n’y a plus qu’à essayer effectivement. Merci beaucoup pour tous ces partages ❤️❤️❤️
De rien... I hope you'll enjoy playing as much as watching. Thank you so much for your always lovely comments (and good practice for my French too, thank you!!).
Love it ❤ Thank you ☺️
So happy you enjoyed it - you're very welcome!
These tags look so fabulous. Love how you combined the resist - and the spritz and flick technique which makes such fantastic texture 😎 I forgot about this great resist technique, so thanks for the inspiration, Alison❣️
It's great to be reminded of a good technique, isn't it... and this is one I love - an oldie but a goodie! And yes, that extra spritz and flick is a treat!
Such beautiful tags.I love the soft look you achieve when blending the inks. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
Happy you like them - it's a favourite technique of mine... an oldie but a goodie! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Those tags turned out beautiful. I love the idea of white paint as a resist. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much. You can also use any other colour paint, of course, which gives you lots of possibilities and variations. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
God I love your tags!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Quite fun and oh so pretty!❤
Thank you - happy you like them.
Wow. I LOVED this video. Your tags are beautiful and I can’t wait to see them finished at some point in the future. Thank you for sharing your techniques and tips in great detail. You make it look so easy and from one who’s tried to achieve what you just did, I can honestly say it’s not so easy!!
So happy to hear you loved the video, thank you! And yes, when I have an inkling about what the next steps are, I'll certainly turn the camera on to follow the process.
I guess I've had a lot of practice at doing it... the more you play, the easier all these techniques become. But it's also partly about accepting the outcomes you get, and embracing the imperfections.
One of the things I love about this technique is the faded, weathered look. So could the final Tim Holtz text stamp be clearer within the inking? Yes, of course it could. And if you want to be certain of a really clear resist, you could use clear or white embossing powders instead. (There'll be a video on that one of these days, I'm sure, as it's one of my other favourite ways of creating a resist.)
But I love the unpredictability, and the fact that the resist is clearer in some places than others, like it's been worn away by time... and in the end, it's only a background, so perfection is very much unnecessary!!
@@w0rdsandp1ctures I tried. Few tags and they turned out great. I tried your techniques. They aren’t as beautiful as yours but I like them
That's great... and as long as you had some fun along the way, I'd say that's the most important thing!
Love watching you create beautiful art work. Gathering lots of tips and tricks along the way. TY💜💜
That's so great to hear - thank you for such a lovely comment.
Love that technique, thank you I most try this❤
Hope you have fun playing with the technique - it's lovely for creating a worn, weathered look. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
You’ve made my day with this! These are the exact colors and things I wanted to learn how to do!
I'm so happy to hear that - always wonderful to make someone's day! Glad you found your way here, and I hope you'll enjoy lots more minutes of fun here on the channel. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Hello Alison! I’m up early today so was able to start my day checking out your Few Minutes of Fun video before moving onto the various tasks and things that need doing before my play time can begin. It’s been quite a long while since I’ve played with resist techniques so this was a lovely reminder of that and your tags are just gorgeous! It was also interesting to see the comparison of the inks and sprays using the paint resist technique and to see how vibrant those sprays are more so than the inks which appear more muted. I usually play with one media at a time so playing with more than one type at a time will be another fun thing to add to my growing list of FUN. Thanks again for sharing your creativity and inspiration! I hope you have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
I do find a touch of resist irresistible... happy to have reminded you of some of its delights! Hope you got your tasks done nice and quickly leaving you plenty of time to play. Have a lovely rest-of-weekend!
Gorgeous love love 😊
Thank you!
Just ordered your new PaperArtsy stamps ❤
Oh, how lovely - I hope you'll have a wonderful time playing with them.
Luv these! ❤
Thank you.
These are beautiful. I hadn't thought of stamping with paint. I can't wait to try this.
It's a lovely technique to play with... don't forget you can try other colours of paint besides white, which gives you endless possibilities and variations. Thanks for your company on this crafty journey.
This technique (and the stamps) is magnificent and I enjoyed this video tremendously. Thanks for your enthusiasm and the tutorial.❤❤😊
