In my 20's I worked graveyard shift in a convenience store. One night a guy came in who looked so much worse than Niki. He had no ears, no lips, a piece of his nose, no hair anywhere. He had 80% of his body burned in a horrible house fire and he miraculously lived. He was absolutely unique among all other people I have met in my life. I will never ever forget that man. Not just because of how he looked, but how he spoke so calmly about what happened to him. He was so at peace with his situation. He was really friendly and outgoing, and when he came to the counter to pay for his items, he just started telling me his story. I guess that's a mechanism he developed for getting through life. He knows everyone who sees him immediately knows he had something terrible happen to him and every single person is wondering what happened. So I guess he just decided to tell people as soon as he meets them, even if they don't ask. I chatted with him for maybe 10 or 15 minutes. It's been 20 years and I still think about that guy sometimes.

We sat in the smoking car for most of the time and talked and told me about his experience and his outlook on life- he was incredibly positive and reaffirming. I still think about him from time to time. Funny how those people appear briefly, but stick with us.

If a woman (or guy) says "ewww" to your burn wounds, can you imagine how ugly they are inside? Why would you let the comments of a completely soul less and shallow human being become a living nightmare for you? Why would you put their values above yours? How about the value of that comment? Was it helpful or hurtful? If its the latter, then why let that supercede the value of your own self esteem? Nah. That scrimpy dimpy female needs to learn some strong lessons in life and to be honest, is near darn guaranteed to feel very insecure about her own looks and therefore projects that onto other humans. I once flew to Vienna for vacation using Niki Airline. My wife and I found it really funny that they went with this concept all the way since all instructions and even weather infos on the plane were voiced by Niki Lauda himself.
But how would he know the actual current weather situation over the alps? Has he voiced hundreds upon hundreds of weather files to be prepared for every condition?
So it finally dawned on me: The pilot, the guy who‘s flying me and my wife to our honeymoon location was none other than Niki Lauda himself.
    And that’s precisely what happened.
He greeted most of the passengers personally when we landed and even took pictures with some and signed tickets and stuff.
What a surreal start to our vacation. What a humble and straight forward strong person this guy was. Truly inspiring what he achieved in life.

When you get used to seeing a person and how they look, your perception of them becomes normalized. Take my wife for example: When she and I started dating, I thought she was the most beautiful and attractive woman alive. Fast forward 15 years and we are married now and am still very attracted to her, but she certainly is not as beautiful as I once perceived her to be, even thou she hasn't changed much. My visual perception of her has normalized. And that's how many of us see Niki Lauda. Yeah, obviously he suffered burning and we recognize that, but who cares? He's a living legend, and I am sure he's a good person with great character and that's all that matters.

    Wow.
It dawned on me, as I was listening to Niki explain his first emotions after seeing his burned head, just _how_ difficult it must be to accept such a deformation and live a life of loving and positivity afterwards.
I dont think its down to ego, in fact I believe it's most likely a feeling of being different to your species which must leave burn victims feeling like they're kinda sub human? I'm not a psychologist, I'm just sympathising as best I can.
It must be a horrendous feeling to know you'll never see YOUR face again, and people will look at you with horror and shock for the test of your life....
Just imagine that for a minute...
Thst is actually beyond our comprehension, but I think I would become a very angry, bitter, socially withdrawn and destroyed with self pity, and I'm just being honest. Shit man, I'm choking up just *imagining* it!
Niki's strength of character is humbling, for him to not only accept his misfortune but to actively use it to highlight the risks we take as a species.
He really was a quite incredible man.
God bless you Mr Lauda, and may God keep you close until the end of time.

As you deal with your losses and depression, and I know they are more than you mentioned, learn to practice awareness, critical awareness, of negative thoughts. Begin to learn to recognize negative thinking and reject it. The battle is in your mind. Repeatedly tell painful memories or thoughts to get the F OUT and replace them with any good thoughts. I went to his funeral here in Vienna. I was smart enough to get into the Church were i could watch the ceremony. It was very touching. Schwarzenegger, Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Brühl(the guy who played him in the movie) and so many more were there, i couldnt believe my eyes

3 times formula 1 world champion, in the time when cars were immensly powerfull and had very little safety... this man lived on the edge, he was obsessed with being the best, respect for his legacy and the inspiration this man gave to other great pilots that came after him in the 80s and 90s.

He should have become a huge movie star as well, in addition to his driving achievements

Niki Lauda what an absolute gem of a man. I felt awfully sadden yrs ago when he came out & said he had no friends. Fabulous F1 Driver. Sadly passed away 2 early. Thx 4 the gr8 memories Niki. The F1 paddock misses U. Terrific interview & rightly putting a few ratbags back in there place. 👍👍F1 fan & a Big Fan of N.L.

Idc, his face is in a bad state.
But he's in that bad state because he had the balls to participate in one of the most dangerous sports during the time, and then miraculously survive getting roasted to death.
This is what gives him the respect he so deserves as a legend of F1.

Not only survive but return to the sport and go on to kill it for many years to come.
