- Niki Lauda offers his personal review of the biographical sports action drama film, “Rush,” which tells the story of his rivalry with fellow Formula 1 driver, James Hunt. Lauda says the movie was about 80 percent accurate and that he’s happy with the finished product, but originally didn’t like the rough cut of the feature film.

Daniel Bruhl looked acted, walked, and behaved like Niki Lauda. He was a real clone of Lauda.

Nose, cheeks, whatever. His teeth were perfect! The whole cast in this film bore great likenesses to the real people they represented, at least the ones I'm familiar with, more so than in any other biopic I've seen. AND they nail the personalities. Hunt wasn't a perfect physical likeness, but man he played the part, and he had that deep, posh, dry voice down! ("I shall be getting drunk.")
I've wondered why they didn't have at least an abstract Jackie Stewart character in this film, if only for the scene of the Cevert/Koinigg mashup crash. Leaving out any reference at all to Jackie Stewart is a big hole in this film to me. I wonder if Sir Jackie asked not to be a part of the film, or to be represented in it. I think Ron Howard would have respected that. I think seeing a reconstruction of that kind of crash would have been very, very painful to Jackie. If I saw my close friend dead in that condition, life could never be the same for me. Jackie has always been a strong and courageous man, and a wise man.

I am from Austria. We speak German, but not in the way like Germans do. It is similar to English in England and Ireland. It is very hard for Germans to speak Austrian German, so Daniel Brühl did really a great job in the movie.
nice, my father is Austrian as well so i'm familiar with the way he talks and our friends from over there. I have a hard time identifying his accent with guys like Lauda because i'm so used to his accent, it just sounds like normal english to me, but it is in fact probably pretty close to Lauda's accent.

Considering Hollywoods ability to screw up the simplest things, 80% is remarkably high. I enjoyed the movie. Great interview.
You've got to thank Ron Howard for that. Not everything he does is solid gold but he has a real reverence for things like this where there is an authentic source. He manages to blend the documentary with the movie. To get a proper movie feel when it's 80% accurate is so much down to how the director treats the script and where it came from.
I agree. He did a good job. Hollywood usually messes the story up and sensationalizes things.

That's one of the reasons I liked this film so much. They didn't make anyone out to be a villain, the two drivers just had different attitudes. Just like how good Lemans was for the same reason. Driven was a prime example of how NOT to do a racing movie.
@A C H it was a shit movie, but due to the story. It was implied to be about Formula 1, but they had to use Indy cars cos FIA woudn't let them anywhere near as the script was so terrible. They tried to include as many F1 things as they could though, like team boss in wheelchair, drivers stopping on track to save stricken friends etc. but the story was silly., the CGI pretty bad and unnecessary and the acting pretty bad.

Niki Lauda has the most inspirational story for an athlete, 1975 he won the F1 championship, 1976 he was involved in one of the worst crashes in motorsport history, finished the season and was 1 point shy of the championship, 1977 won the championship again.
Those 3 years cemented Niki as a legend in F1, his 3rd championship only added to his legacy
And ... Niki Lauda came in 1974 to Ferrari ... driving 1st season ... was "Qualifiying-Worldchampion" in the 1st Ferrari - ONLY THE TECHNICAL BROKE-DOWNS stopped Niki taking F1-WORLD-CHAMPION in this 1st Ferraris-Season! Then 1975 - World-Champion! Then 1976 without the accident for sure also World-Champion! Then 1977! The superb year of brilliance! 1978 - if he would stayed at Ferrari for sure again World-Champion! So - what I want to add to your nice file: 1974 - 1978 NIKI LAUDA for sure THE MAN OF FORMULA 1! Like Jochen Rindt - so many experts talking in highest notes about NIKI LAUDA SUPERSTAR! I met him! I made business with Niki Lauda! He was sponsor of my sports projects in 1988 and later in 1996 in BADMINTON! I will always love and adore this great man!
I was lucky to be there to see him win at Hockenheim in '77, a great race and a memory that's lasted!

"Eau rouge" is one of the most iconic track corners on the F1 circuit, a huge stretch of downhill land going into an upwards corkscrew that an F1 car can take flat out (without decelerating).

It was a great movie. The only part that was difficult to watch for me was the medical treatment after the fire. Almost got an anxiety attack with that. The best part was when he drove with his girlfriend/wife and the two Italians in the old sedan. That was epic. :).

my favorite part was without a doubt when Niki met his wife. I assume this was a Hollywood invention, but to me it is one of the best scenes of any movie ever. Those Italian dudes were awesome!

A little known story which Niki repeats in this interview.Many years after they stopped racing Niki met James in London,James was down on his luck financial problems,disheveled not in a good place.Niki gave him some money,Bollocked him,told him to pull himself together he did the act of a friend not just a competitor.a great man RIP Niki

Hunt was a damn good driver though. Even Niki himself respected him and his skills. He earned that 1976 title, especially in that Japanese Grand Prix since it really did downpour that bad. Took balls to drive in that shit, when even Niki backed out.

I saw the movie. I saw Niki at Mosport, Ontario, Canada back in the day. Daniel Bruhl in my opinion was exactly, precisely as I remembered Niki. Niki said it best when he said that he had no friends, he sure wasn't likeable but he was worthy of admiration. The world is a better place because Niki was in it.
This guy deserves respect for doing what he did, returning from an accident where a priest took his last unction and still being as competitive as ever. This is not for everyone, his biography is undoubtedly amazing starting with having rejected his father's wealth for his F1 dream. An icon of motorsport.
As a dutchman, I really appreciate Mr. Lauda's honesty, directness and knowledge. No small talk, just directly to the point.
One of the best casted movies I've ever seen. Easily a movie I could watch again right after the credits roll. Less than 5 movies I can say that about in my life.

I love the way the actor portrayed him. He got the accent down so well, it sounds like Lauda is actually imitating Daniel Brühl imitating Lauda.
Even though there are some inaccuracies, the movie did so much right : have us care about F1 and its history.
And that's something, given that while Brühl is multinational, what he's NOT is Austrian, and a German mimicking an Austrian accent can very easily descend into caricature.

Listening to Niki critique the making of Rush is pure magic. It's like being able to hear and understand the thoughts of a dog or cat talk about their owners. Awesome!

It's incredible that this guy was so good that he still had the chance the win the 1976 championship despite not having been able to race for a long time due to his accident and then retired from the last race due to the horrible conditions of the track.
My son watched this movie at least five times with different friends in the theatres, he absolutely loved it. He watches it now too. RIP Niki Lauda 🌹

What an incredible legend Lauda was, and will always be. Not having him around is an enormous loss, as if there is a big chunk of Formula One missing. I believe Daniel Brühl did a very good job portraying the great Niki Lauda, and when he did the post accident scenes, especially speaking German, the resemblance was quite remarkable. I am proud to have seen Niki Lauda race in front of my eyes in all the teams he raced, from 1973 to 1984.
Such a touching movie! I’ve watched so many times and still I get the same feelings and tension. And he seems like a great person, same with the character in the movie!!

These are a great set of interviews with Niki Lauda. Intelligent questioning, which obviously Niki appreciates and so has a rapport with you. Rush is a great motorsport movie in my opinion and the scene Niki picks out is one of my favourites for being so touching about how differently they live their lives, yet both can see the other's point of view; one living fast in every sense and experiencing as much as he can as quickly as he can, the other wanting to win, but more importantly survive and continue to enjoy life. It's clear Niki is a highly intelligent man and so no doubt doesn't suffer fools. He used that intelligence when racing and clearly still does. I am old enough to remember watching F1 when both James and Niki were racing and think both Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth did a really good job of capturing their personalities and mannerisms.
Andrew Moorhouse yeah, the ending was such a beautiful “climax” of the film (not in the sense of action, but really getting the final piece to understand their relationships). Throughout the movie it was presented as the juxtaposition of friendship and rivalry - but in the end you truly are able to see, how well they understand each other despite all their differences. They are Formula 1 race drivers (at a time with a much higher kill rate compared to modern Formula 1 - and they have this unique common ground being together in such a dangerous sport, that we as viewers can only bare grasp, but are allowed a small insight into how it affects them.
At least that was pretty much the impression I left with, after watching it the first time.
I was lucky enough to meet James Hunt at the 77 British Grand Prix. I was unable to get anywhere near Lauda though. Great movie and it was a great time for F1.

It's good to hear the real Lauda give his approval of Rush. I really enjoyed it and it made me look into the history of both himself in and Hunt.
It was very well done in the end . Lauda had 1 woman from memory. Fans were interested in motor racing. I was young but remember the Japanese Grand Prix in 1976, what a race that was with James accepting that Lauda had handed him the race after it. But he was stoked it was an incredible race .

Rush is definitely atleast one of the best racing movies of all time. It is still broadcasted on our free channels rather regularly and even though I have already seen it 5 times atleast it's still a blast to watch every time.

As an American racing fan who grew up with a family that revered a driver named A.J. Foyt, the greatest in American open-wheel history, I can say that Lauda seems like a cross between Foyt and Spock from Star Trek: as cerebral as a Vulcan, but an always-tell-it-like-it-is badass who absolutely dominated his racing world during the height of his career. Had we been one continent over, I guarantee we would've thought the world of him, and all the more for his success AFTER the mind-numbingly horrific Nurburgring accident. It's one thing to be great once you've finally climbed the mountain, it's another to get swept to the bottom in an avalanche and claw your way back to #1 by your literally bloody fingernails.
Given those intangibles, he has to be mentioned in any conversation of the greatest of all time.
Niki is my favorite F1 driver. Not when he was driving but later in life. Great man, honest and principled. Rare today.
The man's airlines was involved in a crash and he personally went out his way to figure out what went wrong. That sir is the highest form of "customer service" I've ever seen.

ive just watched it and loved it.. I used to watch these two rivals and they were great..what got me more was Laudas courage. It was fantastic to see him come back after what happened to him..every time I seen him race after that..Id smile and be happy he was back..

Watched Rush years ago but about a month ago I watched the Netflix F1 documentary and a bunch of F1 stuff on RUclips and became a fan. Last few days I've been watching interviews with Niki. What a interesting man and career he had. Sorry to hear of him passing away. I might of not been a fan before but I am now. The parts of him talking about people just wanting to see his burns got me because I have 3rd degree burns also and got made fun of as a kid. I can care less now though. Its just apart of me.
So happy Lauda was alive to help make such a great movie. Can't imagine it being nearly as good without his input

this is so great, even the fact that the movie Rush is so amazing is because of Niki's involvement in the little details. Nikki Lauda is a legend, I would like to shake his hand.
I watched the movie on Netflix last night, and having lived through the 70's, they guy who played Lauder is just incredible, he looked and acted just like him, I remember Lauder's awful accident, and his return to the track, and the worlds shock at his horrendous burns, many people have commented that it is sad that he is no longer with us, having seen the accident at the time, I just think that it is beyond belief that he lived so long after the crash, he survived many of his contemporaries....a life well lived.

My favourite driver of all time. The best driver? Don't know, who cares. He is a hero, one of the bravest sportsmen there has ever been. What he overcame, what he achieved in adversity, for me he will never be surpassed.
Ron Howard's Quality and Talent was all over this film.
@David Bowman Howard is a biopic director. When I saw Apollo 13 I was simply blown away. Considering what he had to work with in Solo, it's not that bad, although it's certainly no Episode IV.
I have so much respect for Niki Lauda. They called Alain Prost the Professor during his F1 career. I say the real Professor was Niki Lauda. In comparison Prost was just some grammar school teacher...

alter bridge You nailed it. Totally agree with Nelson Piquet. Prost we knew he was smart. But Piquet, no one ever mentions how shrewd, fast and calculated a driver he was. He wasn’t crazy like Mansell or flashy like Senna. But he was all of those I mentioned before and most importantly he was a winner.
