      @@slurms777 funny how fans reflect their heroes. At the time, I (like many others) always saw Prost as someone full of himself and not very ethical (aside how professional and talented he was) , and recently when I had arguments with some of his fans, they proved I was right. In five Prost fans, three or four acted like sociopath narcissists. If you are French, it's never easy to ear it, but it's the truth. I can also tell you we also don't lack people like that here, our prime minister reminds me of Balestre, and you had great drivers that were good people, I liked Laffite a lot.

    • @nutsackmania
      @nutsackmania 7 лет назад +214

      In most crashes the cause isn't so obvious. And sometimes what seems obvious was not causative.

      Uh huh. And in this case???

    • @swapode
      @swapode 7 лет назад +298

      Yes, it's a good observation on the crash scene but needing 8 months to narrow everything down and replicate the exact conditions and make sure you've get everything right isn't necessarily that bad.
      Wanting time to consider how you present the story is questionable though. Wanting more than a day is unacceptable. Wanting several months is morally bankrupt.

    • @Szaboo92
      @Szaboo92 7 лет назад +11

      They could have also check on what he mentioned, perhaps they would have find reasons faster...

    • @swapode
      @swapode 7 лет назад +70

      What makes you think that they didn't? Because a single boeing guy didn't jump to conclusions directly during the first visit of the crash site?
      With hind sight everything is obvious. In reality it's a massivly complicated puzzle to replicate very particular circumstances. Even if it was absolutely certain from the beginning that the cause was in the thrust reverse system, which it wasn't, you still need to locate the exact circumstances and then the exact part that caused the failure.
      A vague "there's possibly something wrong with the thrust reverse system" doesn't cut it even remotely.

So not only do you get shit travel you have no flights which effects the economy and exponentially screws everything up. yes companies should be held accountable and even criminally prosecuted for gross negligence. But if every airline lost
      million in lawsuits for every passenger that died in a crash and then sued the manufacturer there would be no airlines and no insurance company willing to insure them. Put it this way. Jet Blue made 430 million dollars last year. If a 737 crashed and each passenger was two million the loss would be so big it wouldn't be worth running the airline.

      you seem to imply that german/austrians are precise, vs. imprecise and unregulated genius italians. Well, let me tell you this: unregulated genius does not work in engineering. Let's just stop this preconceived notions, shall we? Ferrari would not have won 15 titles (and Lancia some world rally championships... and Alfa Romeo the DTC championship...) if italian engineers would be "crazy".

      As the other poster mentioned, this was probably from desperation of very poor locals. At the same time, I think it's extremely likely if anyone had survived a crash, they would be every bit as likely to help as anyone else.

      Their guiding light is profit above all. They should have taken a look at GM and Chrysler because this mentality nearly drove them out of business altogether - and would have had Obama not greenlit the government bail-out to save all the jobs. Now if you buy a scrappy car it might break down and make you miss work. A disgruntled customer can always be given "free service" or "free upgrades" to his or her shoddy car. That being said if not for the huge local market the big three in Detroit would have kicked the bucket in the 80's.
      An aircraft manufacturer however doesn't have the luxury of offering "free service and free upgrades/fixes" to a disillusioned customer. If a plane goes down even due to a rare error everybody else loses their mind. Indeed following the first 737MAX crash Boeing should have grounded them all but another one crashed due to the very same error shortly afterwards. *This* is what offends people. They tried to sweep it under the rug.
      Anyways. Niki Lauda is nobody's fool and has no filter when he opens his mind. What he says here is only a testament to his great character.

      As a veteran visitor and worker in Thailand I found that part pretty amazing. The story I heard was that as soon as word spread locally of the crash there was a free-for-all as the rural people jumped into their pickup trucks and headed for the crash site. They got there ahead of the police and senior authorities and went to work lifting whatever they could find of value off the bushes, trees and probably the shredded corpses as well. Could have destroyed important technical clues as well but of course that wasn't the case.
      What I was most surprised about is the fact that the Thais are notoriously obsessed with ghosts and spirits - thus the so-called 'spirit houses' in front of any residence or building. The happy-go-lucky rascals must have suppressed the fear that the dead would come and haunt them for stealing their possessions off the crash site.
      But then again there could be stories of curses and resultant tragedies that befell the magpie thieving locals - just like the stolen Saudi jewels that are widely believed to be accursed, and brought sorrow and death to various people involved in the long-drawn-out affair (worth a read).

      @d c During the war, when soldiers or civilians were in need of something (money, shoes, whatever) it was normal to steal from dead soldiers or civilians. This happened a few decades ago in Europe. Being poor and in need of everything changes your moral. Everywhere and any time.
