Today we learnt of his passing. 70 is not so old but he had an "extra" 43 years after that crash. Such a brave man and how he came back six weeks later I'll never know... Another part of my childhood has gone...
Dang man, that guy who played him in the movie spoke EXACTLY like him. Hearing the real man speak though... dudes the real deal. This guy is so incredible. The stuff he’s been through is insane. I don’t understand how his story isn’t more recognized globally. What a interesting guy.
Look up, I think his name is Daniel Bruhl, and he's German; he spent time with Niki, and learnt how to imitate his accent... I mean, Chris Hemsworth was pretty good as James Hunt, but Daniel did an outstanding job as Niki, he looks and sounds so much like Niki...
@@frankgile1996 Yes Bruhl did an outstanding job. Should have won a ton of awards for that performance. Nailed it. One of the most underrated performances that year. They were both awesome. And yes, Niki was most certainly one of the realest of all deals. And he was consistently like that his whole life. One of those people who the more details you learn about, the more you respect. I've got one of his books Meine Story. Highly recommended. You'll like him a bunch more after reading that cos you'll realise this is what he was like all the time.
His story is known globally, but it just a generational thing, it depends what age you are plus not everyone was into racing. Many people would never have heard of James Hunt either because he died so young in his middle 40s, so generations after that only tend to know of more recent names but in my time and era James Hunt was all over the newspaper’s and press as the glamour boy of racing. Nikki Lauda was always known as the more serious face of racing, then of course his accident and pure grit after his accident made headline news. It’s been lovely over the last few years seeing him talk more freely following the film and listening to these videos. He always came across as very cool and almost glacial in his time racing, complete antithesis of James Hunt, so this is lovely to watch.
I could listen to this legend all day long ... no glitz no bling ..no bullshit .. just a voice that tells you I have nothing to prove..but accomplished all I wanted in life , this man was burnt to a crisp but yet you never see the scars looking at him ..all you see is his inner beauty that outshines everything and what a magnificent guy he is.. a classic affirmation that indeed beauty is only skin deep. I wish I could turn back time and watched him race 👍🇬🇧❤️🙏🏼👌
Wow! So, Niki had a near-death experience and made the decision to come back to his human life. This is an important teaching and Niki deserves our utmost respect and admiration for his life and how he has conducted it.
There was an Italian F1 driver. Very few outside of Italy will remember him, but he stopped when he saw Lauda's crash and helped get him out of the flaming car. He received burns himself and some say he saved Niki Lauda from certain death that day.
Graham thank you for being a great interviewer. I love the way you ask questions and most of all allow the interviewee to finish their answers. I have watched so many interviews by you that I wonder why you are not on big national network. Keep it up.
I ignored this movie for a long time. Probably because I assumed it would be another Driven. Boy was I mistaken. I caught one of Nikis interviews on accident, watched Rush, more interviews, the documentary movie, watched Rush again, and I'm watching more interviews right now. What a story. What a tough man. People throw around the word "inspiring", but this guy needs to be tagged to the definition.
As a child I always thought Lauda was the toughest nut ever. These interviews prove that intuition absolutely on the money, Truly gobsmacking (only a spliff could take him down!).
Graham you need to do a course, journalism 101 how to ask a question and actually let the person your interviewing answer without interruption,ThankYou you are the consummate professional.🙌🏾
People say who's the greatest f 1 driver and niki lauda springs to mind to have an accident like he had and come back six weeks later and win the championship the very next year. Then to win his third world championship in 1984 in my mind makes the man a true legend.
Woah... I had a very bad Concussion when I was a child and I remember the feeling he is talking about falling into the hole and how amazingly comfortable it is.... The adults told me to stay awake because If I went to sleep I'd likely go into a coma. I had almost forgotten about this until watching this.... Anyone who has had the feeling will undoubtedly know what he is speaking of. RIP Niki
@Darth Matt Secondary concerns when head trauma is severe enough. Primary concern in such conditions is/was to stay awake as to prevent the patient from slipping into a coma. A coma that one is not guaranteed to wake from. Yes, docs want to observe brain function after concussion obvi... Survival trumps observation.
Thank you so much for the work that you did with Niki Lauda. Now that he has left us, this interview series enables us, still, to get a great sense of the immense character that he was.
This subject is easily your best, Graham. Sports figure are not gods, but they ARE heroic. We need heroes, each of us. Life can be very, very challenging at times. I have NO interest in car racing. But I have an immense interest in this driver. Thanks for bringing him to my (and our) attention.
I went to a Formula 2000 race @ Maggione (PG) in Italy. Circa 1990. There the driver who stopped in the F1 race and pulled Niki Lauda out of his burning car was racing that day and crashed into a guard rail. Barely escaped serious injury. I think the racing Gods helped him, perhaps in exchanges for his courage in helping Lauda.
The word 'legend' is often thrown all around especially in this day and age, but few people in life and in sport can actually be described as such, one of them is LAUDA. #LEGEND#GOAT
I was taught a long time ago and I am nearing 60 years in age. A lot of players died with a surprised look on their faces. I was taught, "You don't get old BY being Stupid", . Words I live by. The more I see Mr. Lauda interviews, the more I really like and respect him. Amen RH DSD
0:47 'To make a long story short.' One of the few occasions where I want the long story. What an extraordinary man. His bravery alone was other-worldly.
Niki was one of the smartest men on the planet. On top of that he knew when he was talking with someone who knew what they were talking about. If you knew what you were doing he was happy to let you do your job and support you. That is a trait that is lost in today's world
Nikki once said he didn't have any friends . But he had millions of fans . He was a great race driver . But even better , he was one hell of a good man ...........
God how can you not admire this guy? Even after having the movie done about him and James and some of the stories embellished he could have just played it off with what the movie said about vacuuming the lungs over and over, he tells it like it is, greatly missed what an amazing person!
They say when you smoke what he did, it heightens your senses.... Niki Lauda's senses were already fine tuned to mythical levels, it only took a single puff and he saw the 4th dimension.
According to Alistair Caldwell it wasn't just the fire from the burning Ferrari that caused the damage to Lauda's lungs - the main culprit was the in-car-fire-extinguisher (which apparently was set off my Arturo Mezzario when trying to haul Lauda from the car) - apparently because after it goes off it sets like wet cement - and that's what got into Niki's lungs and almost killed him. Not sure if this is fact - but it sure sounds very feasible. Anyone knows different or agrees - pls let me know. Thankfully Niki Lauda survived his horrendous crash. Fascinates me hearing him talk - not just about the crash but everything. He's such a smart guy who tells it how it is. Love him for that.
Such an awesome story, brought up in an incredibly wealthy family who refused to support him getting into F1 racing, and yet he still struck out on his own to pursue it and ended up becoming one of the best F1 drivers ever. RIP to "The calculator"
And this is why in my opinion, Niki lauda was the greatest formula 1 driver to ever grasp the sport. (Senna in a close 2nd imo, followed by Jim Clark, Stirling Moss, Nigeria Mansell and Michael Schumacher) For me Lewis Hamilton will never be as skilled as the previously mentioned drivers because the cars are no where near as hard to drive and the stakes aren't as high

Lauda is fascinating to listen to.
The priest pissed him off with his last rights, so he decided he had to stay alive.
no he went upset beacuse the priest didn't speak to him as nurse... but a priest doesn't need to speak... the sacraments, the rites speak for him!!
He just wanted to bast his baals
Local Austrian man too angry to die
This is the most Niki Lauda thing I've ever heard
I’d have called him back in to say to him you better hope I don’t die because you don’t want me putting the wrong words in the ear of your god!
