Conan is one of the silliest humans of all time, yet he handles sensitive subjects with such admirable aplomb. The way he relates to people from so many different backgrounds is a real lesson in being a thoughtful listener, one of the reasons why his remotes remain the best things in the history of late night television in my estimation.

Mind you, this was 2010 and he was going to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City and staying at one of the nicest hotels there. It wasn't like he was heading into the bush. But he was just so afraid of sanitary conditions (and they do say if you're not from Vietnam then you shouldn't drink the tap water) and unknown spices that he just ate peanut butter sandwiches for 10 days.

As a tourist, india is one of the best countries to travel to. Lots of stuff. Especially for food. Best food. But as an average indian citizen, it is one of the worst places to waste your life. Dead end. No money in almost anything you do. Censorship up the wazoo. Exploitation of labor. Corruption at its peak. Poverty. Hunger. Unless you're very rich, then, once again, it becomes bliss. India treats foreigners as royalty, while treating its own people as less than disposable garbage. The most lax tax laws are in india, but not for the citizens.
What Conan describes at 3:15 is due to the heavy censorship in india. The prime minister is basically like Xi Xing and does not want anyone to say anything bad about him and his political party. Not to mention, he doesn't want anyone outside to find out what goes on inside. He heavily enforces his propaganda image in and out of the country. That was just an excuse they gave to Conan's team.
People, most of them, buy into it. Smart ones don't. Outspoken ones are silenced by imprisonment or by "accidents" or "s-word" if you know what i mean.
India is not the same country it used to be a decade ago. It is becoming an authoritarian state. It has become an authoritarian state and only a few are still fighting against it. The true patriots like the YT channel Deshbhakt (not promoting, but I felt the need to mention it).
The only reason I can type this is because I'm not in india. But I've seen and experienced all of this.

I’ve been a fan of Vir Das for a long time. I saw that RUclips video at the time, and being an outsider who lives in the US, it didn’t even occur to me that it could cause such controversy in India. That it did, points to a bigger issue that I think India has to grapple with, and more and more of the world including America has to as well. This is the issue of where to draw the line with comedy. Comedy at its root always has dark and light. Comedians should be permitted to explore boundaries. Of course there is a limit to that. But what that limit is, is a huge challenge.

"there is a limit to that". There's your problem. How hard is to realize that if it's not your type of show, you can leave? Instead of resorting to physical violence in response to a verbal compilation. If actually enough people care to be offended and stop going to their show, they'll realign their comedy naturally. But it doesn't happen, because dark humor has its own audience. No individual has the right to impose his personal limit of getting offended on the society.

The more Indian comics start aligning themselves with western sensibilities to make a career there, the more they are going to have to do it at the expense of India’s condition which was a result of its terrible history and the more offensive they are going to sound to an Indian. Things about India, which are funny to an American are not necessarily funny to an Indian just like movies about India, which who nothing but slums might be attractive to a western audience, but is not particularly artsy for Indians . That does not mean that Indians don’t laugh at them selves. They just laugh at different things about India. The difference being the history of the two places.Even within the USA, native Indians and white Americans are going to perceive humor in a very different way if the joke is about their reservations .So Indian comics do have to make that choice about how far they want to embellish facts to sound funny to a foreign audience and stand by it and also be ready to face the consequences from people back home who know exactly what was being done
