***** In their documentary they tell how they delivered 2112 to the record company and basically said "take it or leave it. If you don't want it then we'll go back to our day jobs" When it blew up they knew then they never have to do anything for anyone but themselves and the fans ever again. An EXTREMELY rare instance of artists truly keeping it real.

I was never a Rush fan because at their height I had sort of left progrock behind and became enthralled with jazz and fusion. I was also getting into modern classical music and Rush just didn't do much for me. However, around 2008 or so, I went to their show at the Journal Pavilion in ABQ and they put on an old-fashioned ass kicking performance and showed all the modern day musicians what it meant to be tight, well rehearsed and totally relaxed at the same time. They were nothing short of amazing. True entertainers. Geddy was incredible.I love Rush now.

I must admit he is right up there with the best guitarists in the world for sure. Best rock drummer in the world by far. Geddy Lee is probably the best Rock Bass players on earth to. These guys are of one mind melding together to create musical heaven. I remember their early beginnings being made fun of by other headliners and Geddy and the band not knowing if they would make it. That was during Fly By Night which we WHO GET IT were like. These guys are the shit. My buddy had 2112 on a eight track and we would listen to it full bore on the way to HS in his car that had 4 Jensen Coaaxels and the sound bouncing from speaker to speaker. Ahhh!!! The 70s

    • @tarrasque419

I understand that they hold a special place in your heart, sounds like their music was a big part of your seminal teenage years. I get that, I grew up in the 90s / aughts. A lot of the bands I loved then still mean so much to me even as my musical taste changed/evolved (as it does for most people).. But it drives me nuts when people who like prog-rock bands chalk it up to "well, you either get them or you don't, some people just aren't smart enough to understand it.."
Im just saying it is possible to appreciate their virtuosity of their respective instruments and recognize their amazing technical ability even if you dont particularly enjoy their songs. I personally would never listen to Rush in my headphones/in the car etc., their actual songs just dont resonate with me. That doesn't mean I don't "get them".

I like Tom Sawyer. I agree it certainly isn't the best Rush has to offer. It's certainly not La Villa Strangiato, but it's still really good, and it's a great entry point if you want to get into Rush. While I enjoy a lot of Rush's old conceptual work, I really appreciate albums like Vapor Trails, Presto, and Hold Your Fire. I think Rush is extremely interpretive, and can be anything to anyone. At least to me.

Forty some years ago these guys came on the scene, weird sounds, a voice like a cat in pain, they were considered too out there but they persisted through triumph & tragedy, forty years later they have made it, over 40 million album sales & sold out shows everywhere and the final crown, a spot in the Hall Of Fame, looking at them now, they make it look so easy but we all know it isn't, they will remain legends.

Most deserved and criminally overdue. As for Geddy's voice - age to be sure, but he sings much better than that even now. I'm guessing he didn't have a proper warm-up given the festivities of the induction and after singing for nearly 5 decades he needs a warm-up. Greatness on display.

First, Grohl (and Hawkins for that matter) is a great drummer. He isn't in Peart's league and not many people are.
Second, Geddy sounds damn good for 61. Those early Rush records has atmospherically high notes that he simply can't hit anymore. Big deal. He sounds great on the later music that doesn't require the range that he once had.
Musically, they're as good as ever.

What still keeps blowing me away most of all when it comes to Geddy, is the man's ability to sing some melodically very complex stuff (his voice has been a great divider for ages, some hate, some love, but technically I've always been impressed how well he can keep a complex key structure rather effortlessly), and at the same time play some of the most prestigious, recognizable and rhythmically complex bass lines without missing a beat, or key. Damn incredible to watch, and being landed myself into a situation where I have to play bass and sing, even backing vocals, I can safely testify to the old chorus that combining bass and vocals is just the hardest thing, especially when the bass differs heavily from vocal rhythmics, melody and harmony combined to singing is relatively easy by comparison. Hats off to the man, honestly.

Good comments about Geddy´s voice. It would be impossible to keep singing like he did in the 70´s /early 80´s forever. He is still holding up compared to other rock vocalists his age. About Geddy not being a great singer, just check him out on Grace Under Pressure live from 1984 and A Show Of Hands from 89. His unique sound is a vital and important part of Rush and a typically polished, technically brilliant singer would have been obtrusive to Rush´s brilliant and "one of a kind" interplay.
BTW, the bass playing here is as badass as ever.

Also; AC/DC with Phil behind the kit is a totally different band compared to Slade.
I read a piece from many years ago when Malcolm had to sit out for a time for health reasons.
He stated that he had an opportunity go SEE AC/DC play live.
Think of how cool it would be to actually watch your band live...anyway...
This was during a Chris Slade era.
Later he said he had a great time; but the drummer needed to be replaced ASAP.
It's just a different and proper sound with Phil.
