Love your article on straight axle suspension and steering....its kinda of the same thing I'm going through with the proper 3"-5" lift on a 2wd F-250....longer radius arms, properly bent I-beams and, dual adjustable drag link
So thankful for this build series I’m about to take on my first straight axle gasser build and you literally answered every question I had to a T thank you so much for putting good straight to the point information!!
Question: when removing leafs from the front springs to get the desired ride height, which leafs are you removing. Center or bottom. Thanks Chris for all the great tech videos that you do.
Awesome explanation brotha. This is my first time building a gasser and I'm about to apply it on my 60 falcon Gasser. Thank you 😁 Love ypur channel. Can't wait for your next years project.
That Comet is beautiful! Hope those 2 hose clamps aren’t the usual Chinesium Junk on the market today. Seems like that set up would be dangerous. How about fabbing up a clamp like a bicycle handle bar clamp or motorcycle bar clamp? Love the videos and sure would like to see more. 👍👍
I am building a street ratrod gasser truck. I am removing the corvair box and outside steering Do I need to leave the drag link on the Vega box I am installing at a tilt ! High from steering box down to passenger side low? I have just a plain ole truck with speedway gasser axle !
Why dont you use vega boxes anymore? I've put them on a bunch of different cars, never had no problem. Quick ratio, light and cheap, just wondering why you dont like them?
If it’s a framing River Vega box the box are good. But are very expensive. The cheaper brands give up in no time. And start locking up. Borgeson boxes are very fair priced.
I just watched the first installment and now I am watching the second, and you say you are here to help the novice, but you cut the ENTIRE Chasis out and replaced it like oh thats not a big thing... That is HUGE guy. All that math you did the first show, if you gonna replace the frame with a homemade one, would not matter. That is new motor mounts placement, , you didn't explain how you mated the frame to the square channel you replaced it with, passed it over like its just adding a chrome exhaust on the end of a tailpipe? I am thinking a comet is a unibody, but there is another question, did you build and entire frame front to back, did you build a unibody and bolt the frame to the cab. I call bullshit. You can get straight axles out of Newer Jeep cherokees that are 2wd, You could have "z cut" one of them for any drop you want and been helping the backyard mechanic. You are not making the axle fit the car, you changed the car to fit the axle. Maybe you are used to playing with folks who have pockets full of money, if I cut the frame out from under one of my customers cars they would not have paid me for the work. You made it sound like it was gonna be a matter of rolling the axle and leaf springs under there, lining it up and welding the perches. "We replaced the frame with square tubing to clear the steering box". I love the way it rolled off your tongue like rolling over a speedbump. Mounting the radiator in the new frame, and adding all the mounting spots for sheetmetal, wiring, brake lines and hoses, I guess thats nothing either. You didn't know, you got the straight axle there, put the leaf springs on and the mounts didn't line up, and the ONLY way you could make it work was to replace the frame, all that welding and painting, I'll bet you doubled or tripled the price you began with. That is messed up guy... If I was doing that for a customer I would have had to eat that myself. In the last video you didn't say you were gonna have to replace the entire framework of the front of the car.
Great tech info on the straight axle set up ! You really answered a lot of questions I've been wanting to ask someone . Thanks again, joe

Got to think on at a minute.
What spindles and brake setup is in that axle.
Ford spindles and Wilwood draglite brake kit.

Now I know why my 54 Ford, well drives like an old combine. Steering box is way to high mounted. I'm not turning the spindel I'm pushing down on it.
