SOB, I was just getting ready to buy an 1985 Chevy Custom Deluxe 10 Stepside with a SBC 350 with a lost title and I was just going through this video again because I just watched it last year and I thought about it because of the lost title. Looked for the video, rewatched it just now and then.......... I read the comments! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 Thanks Vermont! (Sarcasm) kicking rocks now!🤯💩💩💩💩💩💩🤯😡🤬
Well, now I want to seek more information. The video is a year old. The comment that it has been closed is six months old. But I would like to believe that Tony would have taken down this video, had it been closed. No offense, but I do not know the person who is stating that the loophole is closed.
Just a word of additional advice to anyone thinking of this from someone who has had to obtain titles for cars more than a few times - there are things you should check BEFORE you even consider handing over cash in most states: 1)Check NICB for stolen records on your phone. This one is obvious, but you can do it quickly and online. 2)Check for LEINS! Unscrupulous sellers will attempt to sell a car as "no title" because they took out a Title Loan against it. Many states allow you to do this online now. Fun fact, if there is an outstanding lien on a car you can expect a legal battle for various reasons with the car's title. 3)Check for VIN stampings on the car. Many states require a stamped VIN in addition to door tags on older cars when an inspection is done to convert your Vermont registration to another state's title. If there is no VIN *STAMPED* on the car, walk away because you will run into a heap of red tape in many states when you attempt to title in state. And last but probably most important: Don't pay anywhere near full value for a car with no title. You are assuming all the risk, demand a price that reflects that.
I've bought cars with no title before, bought some parts for it, then used the receipts for the parts to file a mechanics lein against the owner. In my state the mechanics lein overrides any previous liens or anything. Clean clear (salvage due to inspection) title.
I did check all of that before I made the purchase just to be cautious. I had no idea what I was going to faced with simply because the registration on the vehicle had lapsed. My story is posted elsewhere. I will only say that if I had known what I was going to go through, I would have passed on my car. In fact, now that I know that the California DMV is staffed by incompetents and the state is basically a giant extortion racket, I would never have even thought about registering a classic in this place. I would have done this Vermont thing and included my brother on the title and stored it in Pennsylvania at his place.
@@getchasome6230 that's the expensive way of doing it in Florida it's over 400 dollars. Most clerks are ignorant and they won't know or don't tell you about the abandoned car claim or abandoned property claims.
As a Vermonter I can say its definitely not a scam, its true. I've actually walked into a DMV and had the person working there fill the forms out for me. The part that the seller had to fill out and sign, I just said they were outside in my car and would run out and sign it myself. They knew what I was doing and were always fine with it.
@@bensnide5846 hey man, so I'm "thinking" on buying a truck, no title of course... story is a guy bought it, never did put the title in his name and passed away. It's all legit.. I did a vin check and it's not stolen or theft recovery. My question is... since the title is in a name, he sold the truck to the deceased person.. another guy got it, it sit for 6 years and he decided to sell it, I bought it. Does it matter that the original owners name(on title) is different than the name on the bill of sell if you know? I do not live in Vermont
@@19jody72 honestly I don't want to give you any false information. I would say call the DMV in Montpelier Vermont, that's the main one and they'll set you straight. It's definitely doable I would say.
Thai is OUTSTANDING!!! I've been sitting on a vehicle that I've wanted for years and years. I knew exactly where a rather rare one was and would stop by the gentleman's house from time to time asking if he was ready to get it out of the way. To my amazement, about six years ago he yes. It's been in my possession ever since that day. But without a title it's kinda hard to justify the cost of what I'm going to do to it. This solves that problem! HELL YEAH!!! Thank You SOOO much UT and friends!!!! OUT FREAKING STANDING!!!
Well done, Tony. I wish this video was around 30 years ago. How many classic cars were crushed because they couldn’t sell because of a title issue? A lot.
May not of been this vidio 30 yrs ago but if you have an old hot rod/cars magazine from 30 yrs ago check those little classified adds in the back it was in there
If this video doesn't get liked and shared by everyone everywhere then something is wrong. This is the most important information a low budget car guy can get. Everybody tries to tell you how to build your car. But nobody ever tells you how to be able to legally drive it. I've been too scared to buy a car without a title before because I don't have the money to waste on a car I can't drive. You've given me confidence to give it a shot. Thanks guys
The gmv is the Segway for robbing us of our constitutional and civil rights with threats by police with guns on the side of the road and anywhere else they can ask for it the driver's license as an ID. Driving is a privilege because driving is a commercial Act but traveling is not and all motorized vehicles that are not used to conduct Commerce or actually household appliances because they're for the purpose of visiting our friends and family and gaining sustenance. 'Driving' was created for transported cattle which is regulated and that was sleuth fully imposed and applied to all motorized automobiles and because of Highways and interstates.... so the act of traveling diminished and that's where the paperwork started. Realistically it should only take a bill of sale as proof of ownership and a liability policy for Americans to have an automobile or classic car or whatever.... because without creating a victim there's no reason for jurisdiction or law to come in our lives and especially for generating Commerce. What goes along with the driver's license is a waiver of Rights and a contractual agreement based on the cliche: " driving is a privilege" which so many people just accept without really thinking about it. If we buy a car or whatever and we title it it's a beautiful title everything is about the state and our names are just typed in there and technically our name should be on the top so Florida as an example has stolen every car from people buy a bait and switch and the fact that they paid for it on record is in acceptance and that's why cops are destroying people because of a registration or a piece of plastic license or a plate that wasn't changed over even if they have liability insurance which is the frontman to screw us all and Deliver us to tyranny. Why should an American that's lived here their whole life before Stu get rid of their car because they can't have it in the yard without a plate or if they have been on record why should they keep have to renewing things because they don't guarantee the economy and administrative services are all inadequate as well as being open 925 which is our work hours... so the whole circumstance is harassment based on distrust Allowed by the stupid contract because everybody doesn't want to think for themselves. .... how many people have lost their muscle car because of a pot seed or a roach? That's a whole other subject but those cops make money and they're driving other people's cars now. It's a lot but I'm glad that this subject is being talked about with the titling because this is how they're screwing people and taking our rights away all through this paperwork. If I make money through my work and I buy something from somebody else why shouldn't I be able to just live my life without this garbage there's no reason for it. And if people are afraid that their cars going to get stolen then you put it on public record but don't let your rights get taken away! There's no valid excuse or reason for how difficult some of these circumstances with administrative tyranny are
I just did this to title my 2000 VW New Beetle! I now have Vermont plates on my car!! Got it via Bill of Sale only and now have the vermont plates. They only give 1 license plate sticker, and it goes on the bottom right of the rear license plate. Keep in mind that if you do not have a vermont vehicle inspection on the car, it is technically not legally licensed for driving in Vermont with those tags, so keep in mind that you need to get a vermont state inspection the instant you start driving the car in/through vermont if you use this process and actually use the Vermont license plates.
Man, I sure did get something out of this video! It's called "Golden information". Thank you so much for this help. I think my car that needs legal paperwork, will soon be a "Vermont resident".
We live in California, and my son just used this to title some valuable old VW that he scored really cheap due to no title. Definitely works. He was stoked!
I'm in CA. What did you do for the vin verification? If you got CHP, local PD, or DMV to do it why couldn't you go right the the CA DMV and get the title? Also, with the Vermont Title, did you have a lot of steps to go through to get the CA title?
@@jasonredwood154 If the car has been out of the system for years then no. If it still has a current record, they will have to pay those fees. California will get their money one way or the other.
Guys thank you so much. You cleared up all my weird questions I’ve had researching “America’s DMV”. Now I’ll have no problem getting my Buick roadmaster back on the road
Just went through this in North Carolina with a 1950 Oldsmobile with a bad title/vin. A lot easier than I expected. Did it through my state of NC The DMV officer comes out checks out the car and gives papers to sign. Fill out paperwork which includes who you bought it from etc, your insurance company, a bond 1/2 the value of the car. DMV officer came back about 2 weeks later with a new vin plate before papers even filed. Then they checked the paperwork and ok'd it. Got new plates at the DMV when submitted the paperwork and just waiting for the new title to arrive. Total cost about $150. DMV officer very nice, visited twice and myself there once. Don't be intimidated by the process. Just an example. I know it's different in every state. Keep up the good work Tony, get these cars on the road!
I’m in nc also and trying to figure out which way to go. Vermont route or NC bond route. I bought a 1985 Jeep from a buddy. He had lost the title but it was a clear title. He had owned the Jeep 25-30 years and it just got misplaced along the ways. We were going to go to the DMV together one day and fill out all the paperwork and Then NC would just send me the new title no problem………. Well, my buddy died one night before we could get it done. He had given me a hand written bill of sale showing I paid the $500 but dmv would d not accept it and said I had to go a bonded route but I’ve never messed with that before so I just haven’t done anything yet. It’s crazy that these dmvs and it so hard to get things done and it just doesn’t need to be that way!!
Hey I am in NC as well. So you didnt do the Vermont title? You chose to do the NC Bonded title? I am wondering which I should choose for a 1971 Motorcycle I am purchasing.
These loopholes have been around for a long time and can be done for several states. A long time ago I used to use a company called Olympic Title or something like that and they were in Michigan I think. It was also available from Maine as well. The car only had to be 11 years old though. The catch was you had to "Sell" them your car and pay them 150 bucks and provide a bill of sale. They would register the car in their state and then sell it back to you for the 150. You then took the registration to your local DMV and apply for title and Reg. They used to give me flak but when they would look it up they would do it. This was back before the good ole internet was big. I would buy older cars at auctions with no titles and get them this way. I think Maine would actually send you one year Tags but the registration was still in the business's name and you had to promise to switch it. Got some killer deals including a awesome 1987 Nissan Sentra with 20k. Crazy story on that one, old lady bought it and never registered it. Drove 2 years on paper plates! Then kicked the bucket and grand daughter got it and parked it for 12 years.
I'm from North Carolina bought a car from Tennessee no tittle . Research every which way to tittle the car none worked..But this video worked ...No scam at all fully legal and well worth it..( Vermont loop hole is real ) I even taught our DMV a thing or too..I was offer a job ..just bullshitin but thanks guys
Thank you, Tony, for going into detail on this process. Lots of us knew of this and knew there were "gotcha" problems with the forms that bounced the "good but wrong box checked" application. This is value.
This is one of the reasons I'm glad I live in Vermont in addition to the fact you can buy REAL Maple Syrup everywhere !! Now if we only had a Dragstrip in Vermont life would be perfect.
It'll never really happen but NY state is coming hard at your Maple syrup. In fact I'm nearby to the stuff that was served in the white house a while back, not sure if that status is changed.
I remember winter '70/71 going to a maple syrup shack near Stowe and they poured lines of fresh syrup out on the snow and rolled them up on popsicle sticks. Do they still do that?
I did this on a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I live in Massachusetts and drove to Vermont and had it registered the same day with Vermont license plates in hand. I then transferred the registration to Massachusetts and had my Massachusetts title in the mail 2 week's later. It works, great info!
I went through international title service. I later found out that that service went through vermont. I sent it into them for an old chevelle. It took 2 years to get the paperwork back so I could get a title in my state. I thought that was a little bit long of time to wait😮
My Vermont tags just came in the mail!! Followed these instructions, sent out the paperwork, two weeks later I've got green tags on my 73 Polara. Thanks again guys!
I'm from Arizona .. you have whatever you want titled inspected by someone from DMV ..they used to come to you no matter we're you lived I lived off grid nearly 30 years in the boonies an I've met them an guided them out to the property to inspect..I don't know if they still do come out an inspect if not you have to push or tow or haul it to DmV to get inspected .. as long as it's not stolen they will give you a bonded title. The whole process goes much faster than it did over 20 years ago. It's not that difficult to get a title. Here in Arizona that is. Cool video Man they all are . Very informative Mr Tony
I live in Washington State and I purchased a1989 Ford F 250 pickup. and the person that I bought it from had the title and I guess they lost it. but now they are jerking me around they are not answering my phone calls. and I need to get a title for it because I'm starting to experience issues with law enforcement.
My buddy did this with a vehicle, so at the very least I know it's a thing. I love you Uncle Tony. You're the shit, and it's great watching you go from about 5,000 subs or less, to almost 300k. The world needs more dudes like you.
Tony, cop here…if a stolen car was ever entered into NCIC (database we use to check vins, serial number of stolen items, firearms, even missing person) it SHOULD remain in NCIC forever unless recovered. When I’ve done vin verifications for people we run them via NCIC and that is satisfactory for us in PA. Also I do audits of our departments NCIC entries monthly. I can vouch for items remaining in NCIC for 30+ years (stolen gun never found or recovered for example)
NCIC does not retain a car or article indefinitely, only the gun file. Article is shorter than the car NCIC file. If I remember right, cars and articles can be extended if they're missing person/felony vehicles, but I haven't done the validations side in a few years.
I followed this process and it 100% worked as described. I bought an old scooter, no title, filled out the paper work, performed the inspection with law enforcement, had signatures from the seller, mailed it in, and just saw they cashed my check today. Thank for passing this knowledge
Hey Griff, im in NC as well, i want to register my 71 duster project using this method, anything i need to watch out for with NCDMV registration offices? (just subbed to your channel as well)
Hey this is rich I heard today on news feed that Vermont loop hole has been shut down because people were using it to commit crime. What other states have a open loop on registration 7/9/23
Thank you. You did publish this before I walked away from a $500 deposit. But I didn't see it until my trailer was 800 miles away. One way. Had I known this I would have bought a 1961 Econoline and a 1974 Blazer. Instead, I walked away because I couldn't find any light at the end of the tunnel for no title vehicles for 3 weeks of searching for an answer. This will now be my go-to for all no-title vehicles going forward. Lessons learned...A BIG thank you!
18:50 thank you to Vermont for leaving this "open" like said in the video, there's alot of old car guys in a jamb that don't have a title and it's not stolen. So thanks for having a little trust in the people who are just trying to make thier life more enjoyable. I've got an old motorcycle without a title, I'm definitely gonna get one now!
@@gcaprice406 well give credit where it's due. If they're smart enough to give plates to a person who is going to produce the vin then they obviously know the person is getting honest and if they're not well then by all means come collect the car geez at least they found the stolen car. Hahaha
Awesome work! Thanks for the information. I did something similar years ago when I was living in Massachusetts. I bought a car with no title and the DMV refused to title it. So I “sold it” to my friend in New Hampshire. He was able to register it, but no title. Massachusetts would title a vehicle with a NH registration. So he “sold” it back to me.
So I did this for 99 hatch I bought in CT that came w/ a bill of sale. I had sent the money order & documents through my local post office as priority mail on the 24th of august. I live in New Jersey, and my money order was confirmed today that it was cashed ! I Can't wait to receive my plates and registration so I can flip it for a title in my state ! I appreciate the video, thank you Tony ! Your awesome !
Great video Tony! I’m a younger guy and during covid I restored a 71 Honda Sl350 barnfind. I did hours of research to figure out and use this loophole for that bike and it worked! This video sums all that up in 20 minutes!
Did you have to do a Vin Verification on a bike that old? I didn't think you have to the the vin Verify on bikes unless they were over 500cc. Can you expand on what you did for your sl350 please?
Thank you for this video I really think that this by far the most informative automotive channel on RUclips! I did the NICB vin check and ran my recient purchase 1994 ford f150 4x4 it has a rebuilt title but was never issued a salvaged title. It was never stolen either which is good.
Hey, this is really cool. I lived in Stowe, VT back in the early 70s, so this kind of feels right at home to me. Steve Magnante's roadside crawls are calling my name.
This loophole closed unfortunately but there is still a few options dealing with this. The previous owner has the ability to file for a lost title, if you trust them to do so. Also if you know someone with a junkyard they can get a title.
Thank you so much guys!! I've heard of this, but was never sure of how to go about it. I just got a 70 chevelle that has been sitting since the late 70s, early 80s, and with no title anywhere. This is going to save me so much time over getting a bonded title here in Iowa
You guys did a really good job informing us on the Vermont special. I was aware of it but not close to what you guys shared. Now I can buy my dr350 dual sport baby. Thank You
I challenge anyone to come to Massachusetts and try to pull this off The Massachusetts registry of Motor Vehicles is one of the most difficult in the country. If you went with a registration and a piece of paper telling Vermont law they’d tell you (knowing you can’t get it) to bring the Vermont title.
Excellent, detailed, extremely informative, simple and very understandable. Great job. I went through this exact process when I bought my sisters 79 450SL Merceds. Presented to my current home state and then was able to transfer the VT registration to my state for a new title, registration, tags and plates. My Mercedes 450SL did have VT plates and registration but to title, all documents were under my sister’s name. It was a straight process. Great job gentleman! Now if I could only find my high school 1968 Malibu SS 396 or the VIN. Keep these videos coming. 👍🏻😎🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸👍🏻😎🚓🏎
Almost needed this a few months ago, on OUR OWN JEEP we let sit for 13 years, since '08. And likely will use it soon on something else. Thanks guys. Very useful info!
Question for you, since it was 15 years old, did they issue you a title from Vermont? I'm looking into doing this with a jet ski that's from 09. Thanks in advance.
if you lose a title to your vehicle you can do to the dmv and file for lost title. As long as it is in the same name they will issue you a new one with a small fee
UPDATE: unfortunately the Vermont Loophole is no more as of July 2023. Stinks but I think criminals were using the loophole for titling stolen vehicles
I have a 1950 Pontiac that's been sitting since 59 and I have absolutely no paperwork but I couldn't keep myself from working on it anyway you guys just saved me a ton! VA DMV is so hard to deal with
See if they have that rule that if a vehicle has been left on your property for more then three years you automatically own it get the ownership might not work in America but ours laws are mostly the same
I'm going to do this from now on and so will all of my gearhead friends. PA is an absolute nightmare when it comes to titles. You don't know the half of it. Rated worst in the entire country along with the horrible roads. Fun Fact: PennDot has more lawsuits against them than any other DMV in the country because of the horrible road conditions and for all the unnecessary garbage they spray on the roads during the winter. This is why you can't drive anything nice in PA.
Back in 1999 when I needed to get old title information for my 1979 Trans Am, Penn DOT was very helpful. I think it cost $5 for a title abstract and they sent me a bunch of information in a couple of days. Same with MD DMV. It was very helpful with tracking down the history of my car. I know that PA requires notarized titles. When I bought my car in PA and registered it in NY, it was easy. NYS isn't bad with titles and registrations. I swapped over three cars in 20 minutes from my mother's estate in 2017 with a trip to DMV. Walked out with new plates, registration, etc. and turned in the old plates on one trip. The classics I own had to be done by mail, but NYS DMV's Vintage Historical unit was great and even let me keep the plates on the car (which were original to the car in some cases) with a signed statement by my uncle who was the executor of my mother's estate. It was pretty smooth with the right paperwork.
@@googleusergp My cousins bought a house in Poughkeepsie about three years ago and they said they'd rather deal with NY's DMV over PennDot any day of the week. They picked up a '68 GTO for dirt cheap with no title and they said they'd never would've been able to pull that off in PA and that NY was cool about it.
@@Whats-It-To-Ya NYS would just require a VIN tracing with forms if no paperwork is available. My coworker has a 1964 GTO that he bought around 1972 in Queens, NY where he lives and maybe last registered about 1980. He never knew it, but the VIN was wrong on the paperwork all of those years. Fast forward to about two years ago and his son's ex wife and him get into it and he gets thrown off the property. She sells the car and it winds up on Ebay. It was a whole what to do for my coworker to get it back. We wound up connecting the trim tag to the Pontiac Historical Services paperwork somehow and proving the VIN was a digit off. I think he's since corrected it. The good news is the car is back in his possession and is on the way to being restored. I told my coworker to never give up on it and I'm glad he didn't. He was so upset about it, he never wanted to talk about it on business trips that we'd both go on. I kept telling him, "We'll find a way to get it back. It will turn up". Sure enough it did. I even offered to store it for free on my property for him, but he's since gotten a place to put it. As a thanks, he gave me a Craftsman and Snap On toolbox and some tools that he had at his mother's house because he has to clear it out to sell it. It was like a treasure trove of vintage stuff.
Yeah that's the truth it took me 9 months to get a reconstructed title for replacing the frame on my 86 S10. I wanted it nice and legal for when I got tired of it I could sell it with no hassles. Man if I'd known what a pain it was going to be, would have and should've scraped the damn thing!!!
Thanks! I was surprised to hear that your in TN too, so you know the nightmare of a no title car! I guess I'll have to do a search to see if my vin comes back stolen or not; It WAS stolen in 2020 but recovered a week or two later, so I hope that has been cleared up!!!
Thanks for this video Tony! My father in law just did this with a Triumph he owned, and I was going to make a video on it myself. Great explainer for everyone!
Disclaimer for anyone who lives in California and wants to do this: California will give you a “non-transferable registration” when you transfer the registration from Vermont to California without a title. If you want a California title, you must provide the most recent title. In my case, the title was void because it was signed and dated incorrectly, and based off the date would have cost me a lot of late fees. I handed over that title after doing the registration and did get a California title. If I had no title, I wouldn’t have been able to get a title in California without applying for one from the car’s home state. If the car was last titled in California this part may be complicated, I’m not sure what you would need to do at that point
You could simply have it registered by a friend who is a resident of another state which then, they could send you the title and you take that title to the California DMV and transfer to your name.
You can get a title in Washington like that too for a forgotten car. You write a letter and get a release of interest for them to sign, the dept of licensing will send it to the last registered owner. Most often the letter is returned because the address is 5-10+ years old. You can then get a conditional registration, the state of WA is owner, you are registered owner. You can buy tabs/plates/insurance. The previous owner has 3 years to claim the car, with proof of their right to current ownership. After 3 years you get a full title under your name.
My 1970 Toronado got her clean title this way. I have no idea where she came from, but it sure as hell was not Pennsylvania, where I bought her. Too much intact sheet metal!
This is awesome. We had a family member die, and left a ton of vehicles behind. We know the majority had titles, but there are some that don't and this would be a great way for us to clean up and get rid of the non titled vehicles.
Some state4s will allow you to do a title verification search. You provide the vin and name of person and they will tell you if this matches. If so, you can send for a replacement title from your state. There also should be a mechanism to provide a death cert and get replacement titles.
When I say no title, I didn't mean he had it then lost it. He got a few vehicles that he was supposed to get titles for, but never did. So we have no way of getting rid of them or even selling them for any real value.
I went through that in 2018. My uncle was the executor of my mother's estate (my dad died years ago) and with a court letter, my uncle was in charge of her affairs. He was able to sign everything over. Since it was only my sister and I and I was buying the family house and owned all the cars, it was a simple simon paperwork move.
@@bobroberts2371 In the state of Ohio they only keep these records on file on computer for 10 years and then they purge them. Then they are lost forever.
Titles are simply another part to locate when restoring your classic car. It happens the exact same way those original rally wheels got lost. The title is lost w/time & several owners. It happens the same way your classic cars engine gets roasted by a faulty carb. The title gets burnt in a fire. It happens the same way your hood or trunk lid gets rust holes in them. A mouse or water was involved. You can buy new rally wheels from a nice seller at a swap meet & you can get titles from bureaucrats. Sadly, most DMVs don't care about classic cars & don't realize titles get lost with enough time like anything else. In my experience it's never nefarious but they treat you like a criminal, nonetheless.
It's easy as pie in TN. You just need a few pieces of paperwork like bill of sale and an affidavit transfer of ownership to take to the county clerk and then you wait up to 8 weeks for the title to show up.
This is a great alternative for people who are stuck and need another option. Personally, I would walk on anything that doesn't have a title. I have heard of too many horror stories of cars coming back as stolen or contested by previous parties. Nice to know about this option though. Nice job gang
THANK YOU Guys SO Much!! Hopefully, nobody will screw this up for us all. Thank you Vermont as well! Poor ppl like us, cannot AFFORD to purchase vehicles like the "sheep" of the U.S.. I'm like UncTony, but I do NOTHING Legally. Tennessean, and I rule CopperHead Rd.
It's unlikely to get cancelled. Basically, back before the internet he states were not wanting to deal with the possible legal issues in retitling vehicle's you couldn't get information on. But every state had a Need for a retitling service for it's citizens that do things legally but on the cheap. Vt stepped forward and said hey if we can make some fee revenue off this deal we got the balls to do it for all the states and save you the risk. America said sweet thanks vermont. Then shady used car salesman started spreading rumors because you know more cars for them if people ain't heard of this or think it's sketchy
@@superpossum78 so you think that other states want Vermont to register unregisterable cars, more than those states want to collect revenue for selling registrations? I don’t think you understand why they register cars
@@atozbikes I'm not sure you understand who is using this service. Car thieves don't target 15 yo vehicle's. This is mostly a help to guys who want a title on A car where the previous owner has died or someone lost the paperwork and left grandpa's old truck in a barn but now they'd like to sell it rather than scrap it. The cars aren't illegal they're just missing papers.
Works like a charm, i had a motorcycle that didnt have a title, and i just had the seller fill out a receipt with the vin#, year, make, model, and his selling adress, along with a signature, and the selling price! Takes about 3 weeks, but works great!
There's a whole you tube channel dedicated to car titling. It's called Car Titles. There are many legal ways to do this and each State has it's own, but similar, ways. In NH anything over 20 years only gets a rego, no title. So it's similar to VT, but you need to be a resident or have an "uncle" who is.
Do you have to give Vermont proof of insurance? This is very interesting. I watch all the classic car shows and they never talk about titles or any other paperwork.
In NY all you need is the b version of the DMV forms - basically claiming you are the owner of any pre title car or car on which the state no longer requires a title for..
OMG this is what I've been searching for! I've been trying to get my 87 GTI titled! It was a "if you can get it running you can have it" deal but they never gave me the title. Even though I tried repeatedly to get it. They also wouldn't take the car back and I haven't had the heart to destroy a classic. This is gonna save me so much compared to getting a bonded title or a salvage. So looking forward to getting my MK2 up and running again!
Question: If you buy an old car from someone with no title or paperwork of any kind and it hadn't been registered for a long time, how would you or the Vermont DMV know if it had a salvage title?
Me, "Owner name unknown. But he died before I was born in 63, it was in friends barn when she bought farm in 75." Ohio DMV, "He must come in". Me "I just said he was dead". DMV "He's still gotta come in" Me, looking out window at graveyard across street, "I've got a shovel in my truck. Should I start digging up people who died in 63 until I find the right one?" BMV picks up phone dials... Me, leaving... I'll try this...
In WV you can file for a lost and missing title as well, sort of a similar process. Has to be inspected by a police officer and have a clean vin (not stolen or repossessed). Then you spend like 150 bucks and you get an abandoned/missing title. Did this on a MK3 Supra. Works on R title cars out of junkyard I got from an insurance auction
As of late 2023, *2024->on, VT No Longer 'Allows' Out-of-State Residents to Register (Lost Title) Vehicles...* (I will return here *IF* I am able to do so...)
Actually, a legit recycler/junkyard MUST provide a VIN with any part purchase, per federal law. I just redid my MO state inspector license, and they were very specific about this. That said, if a car is in the junkyard, in (MO/IL for sure) it is currently titled as "JUNK" and it is almost impossible to re-title as anything else. Just FYI
If the car has been in the yard for a long time I doubt they will find that status. Also, does Vermont check all 50 states to find the previous title? Even though the new owner is from TN that doesn't mean the car wasn't form CA.
Even that depends on the yard. A modern yard, sure. A place that's been in business since the 50s and has cars out back that have been off the road since then? You're fine.
I done this & works I used my Vermont tag till it expired then got my local state tag & a title but mileage will be exempt on the title as mileage not needed for vehicles older than 10 years.
I bought my 97 mustang GT for $500 no title... No worries. For $75 I went through a bond agent. It had a lien from a title pawn outfit.. I claimed it as abandoned, charged $45 per day storage for a year which came to well over 13K. The title pawn forfieted the lien and I had a legal title in 6 weeks. That was 3 years ago and she's been my daily since then. $500 mustang. 😁
I’ve been using the Vermont loophole for years, I can confidently say this sole video alone is the reason they closed it. Within a week of this video being posted, they had THOUSANDS of applications come in. If you know something good like this, keep it to yourself because this is a “need to know” type of thing. Tony should know better but all he clearly cares about is views and revenue. I knew this video was going to be a problem the second I saw it. Unsubscribed.
@@clarenceclark8592 weird because I talked to the Vermont dmv and they literally told me they closed it 2 months after he made this video due to thousands of people trying to do it. Tony had everything to do with it. Believe what you want, but know you are wrong.

Just a word of additional advice to anyone thinking of this from someone who has had to obtain titles for cars more than a few times - there are things you should check BEFORE you even consider handing over cash in most states:
1)Check NICB for stolen records on your phone.
And last but probably most important:
Don't pay anywhere near full value for a car with no title.
NICB is useless for a non 17 digit VIN

Well done, Tony. I wish this video was around 30 years ago. How many classic cars were crushed because they couldn’t sell because of a title issue? A lot.

Nowadays all but the seediest scrapyards won’t take a whole car for scrap without a title.
If this video doesn't get liked and shared by everyone everywhere then something is wrong. This is the most important information a low budget car guy can get. Everybody tries to tell you how to build your car. But nobody ever tells you how to be able to legally drive it. HALLELUJAH!!!!!
What goes along with the driver's license is a waiver of Rights and a contractual agreement based on the cliche:
" driving is a privilege" which so many people just accept without really thinking about it.

Another thing to remember is that the registration will expire at a certain point. Be sure to transfer to title as soon as you can.
You just renew registration every year.

Question for you, since it was 15 years old, did they issue you a title from Vermont? I'm looking into doing this with a jet ski that's from 09. Thanks in advance.
if you lose a title to your vehicle you can do to the dmv and file for lost title. As long as it is in the same name they will issue you a new one with a small fee
coming back to say i got my plates today! and my vehicle is salvaged. it works clean or not
It is all over!!! They closed the loophole July 1st 2023.
I live in Pennsylvania as well, and I concur.
Thanks, good luck with it!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Been following this channel since I've acquired an abandoned Polara. I was planning on doing this to get plates. You guys save the day once again.
Who did ypu list as the seller?
@@jeffrobodine8579 good question on an abandoned one
Wondering the same thing
We now need to find a new way because Vermont just recently put s stop to it.
Then they are lost forever.
what vehicles?
We may be in a position ta help each other.
That's a thing of the past .it was a good thing then people got greedy and fucked it up for the rest of us! Got to love it
This is a great alternative for people who are stuck and need another option.
Yup, I’ll bet that this stupidness will have them ending this by next year. What ever, who cares, by legal cars
Nooooooo! It supposed to be a trade secret! It's great, but if too many do it they'll take it away. Love your videos Tony. Watch them daily.
Aw man do you think if more people start using this method that vermont will be like crap too much dmv money coming in better squash it
Works like a charm, i had a motorcycle that didnt have a title, and i just had the seller fill out a receipt with the vin#, year, make, model, and his selling adress, along with a signature, and the selling price!
Fact is you don't need a License, Registration or Insurance to take your property from A to B. Live by Common Law
Great info. Will this work for a pull behind camper/trailer?
ditto
Do you have to give Vermont proof of insurance?
This is very interesting. I watch all the classic car shows and they never talk about titles or any other paperwork.
Insurance is probably not required for a title app
No you dont
No
In NY all you need is the b version of the DMV forms - basically claiming you are the owner of any pre title car or car on which the state no longer requires a title for..
So looking forward to getting my MK2 up and running again!
did you get it running yet? just curious, I'm using this process on my 82' Honda Super Cub.
Question: If you buy an old car from someone with no title or paperwork of any kind and it hadn't been registered for a long time, how would you or the Vermont DMV know if it had a salvage title?
i believe it would be stuck to the vin, thats why you lookup the vin to see what the last title was
@@NipponSpeedWorks what if it now has a rebuilt title after it was previously issued a salvage title?
Me, "Owner name unknown. But he died before I was born in 63, it was in friends barn when she bought farm in 75." Ohio DMV, "He must come in". Me "I just said he was dead". DMV "He's still gotta come in" Me, looking out window at graveyard across street, "I've got a shovel in my truck. Should I start digging up people who died in 63 until I find the right one?" BMV picks up phone dials... Me, leaving...
I'll try this...
Ain't bureaucracy a beautiful thing? 😆 It sounds like a qualification for the job is a negative I.Q.
It appears that Cousin Austin and his partners haven't fully embraced Uncle Tony's outlaw life style. 😵 😬🥴😉
As of late 2023, *2024->on, VT No Longer 'Allows' Out-of-State Residents to Register (Lost Title) Vehicles...*
(I will return here *IF* I am able to do so...)
You just gave me a way to save a 1948 Plymouth from being crushed.
Let me know if this works as I have a 1950 dodge truck I restored
Excellent presentation! This is very good information and will be helpful to many people with this issue.
That is no longer possible as of June this year
I done this & works I used my Vermont tag till it expired then got my local state tag & a title but mileage will be exempt on the title as mileage not needed for vehicles older than 10 years.
Best way to get a loophole closed is to blabber about it all over the internet. Was nice nice while it lasted.
Now that you’ve helped us in telling us this, you better believe they will be made to “fix” this, or close the loophole!
Yup! Shout it out at the rooftops and they’ll most certainly close the loophole.
No, Vermont is making a fortune off of this, but maybe other states may not accept a Vermont registration
Thanks Augustus Gloop
Georgia 86 and older u can register bill of sale then register it in the state u live in and they have to build u a title
Personally I blame squirrels
@@Nichole-440HP lol
I’ve been using the Vermont loophole for years, I can confidently say this sole video alone is the reason they closed it. Within a week of this video being posted, they had THOUSANDS of applications come in. If you know something good like this, keep it to yourself because this is a “need to know” type of thing. Tony should know better but all he clearly cares about is views and revenue. I knew this video was going to be a problem the second I saw it. Unsubscribed.
Wow. Other avenues to title not stolen vehicles with lost titles.
Yep, phuck these guys. Someone always has to run their mouth and ruin things.
Dude this loophole was in the process of being repealed long before this video dropped not to mention it’s far from a secret
Tony contributed 0.00% to that loop hole being closed everyone knows that and that it’s not the only way to legally get a title for vehicle
@@clarenceclark8592 weird because I talked to the Vermont dmv and they literally told me they closed it 2 months after he made this video due to thousands of people trying to do it. Tony had everything to do with it. Believe what you want, but know you are wrong.
im upstate ny and i was wondering why so many cars round here got vermont plates
In some states as long as you can get a bonded title as long as you have a notary seal is on the bill of sale
If you want a loophole to stay a loophole, don't broadcast the loophole.
Probably the best video for car guys ever uploaded
