    It seems every screw & bolt is completely stuck in this 911 but otherwise it's in great shape and should make for a speedy rebuild project!

    Samcrac That hammer tool turns the output a fraction every hit. It has splines inside so when the hammer presses it down the bottom rotates turning the screw. It doesn't strip because the pressure of the hammer is forcing the bit down while turning

      I have had one of these for years. Proof: mine has no plastic. The other thing that helps with these is the bits tend to be very good quality. That along with what Andrew said keeps the bit from slipping out while turning.

    • @fillg

      I bought one of those while doing brakes on my Honda. It worked on one screw, broke a couple of them off, then the tip of the bit sheared off. I ended up drilling almost all of them out. I guess that's what I get for buying a rusty car from Wisconsin (and a cheapo impact driver).

  • @ltsgarage7780
    @ltsgarage7780 5 лет назад +13

    Sam. First off. The impact screw driver is a tool that most beginners learn about after working on cars for about 6 months. How long have you been doing this?
    Next! When using heat. You heat up the outer part. Not the bolt. If you must weld a nut on it. You NEVER just put pressure on it. You'll snap it off every time!
    Put a box wrench on it. Then TAP it with a hammer. You may need to hit it harder than a Tap?
    If you end up snapping it off. You center punch the direct center. Drill out a small hole. Then work your way up in size until you just start to cut into the bolt threads. Not the knuckle part threads. Then take a 6 inch scratch all and dig your threads out. It's really easy & much better of an idea than a Heli coil. Especially when it's done on a suspension part!
    Good luck. Ask for help when you get stuck. Like the bolt! It just might save you money & time.
    It also may save your life!!!

Not forgetting that elbow grease will be involved. I saw your "Viper" episode. A BMW M series from the dealer lot would cost me that. I truly enjoy what you do. Salvaging low priced auctioned cars and making them legal is your signature. Stick to it.

    The number one recommendation I can say to anyone who has the harbor freight flux core welder is throw away the flux core wire that comes with it and go to your local hardware or welding supply store and get the legit flux core wire. For occasional welding or even welding for exhaust systems, this is a great bargain welder, just don’t get it expecting great results for sheet metal body work like welding in repair panels, for that one of the best little “bargain” welders in my opinion would be the Hobart 140. I say “bargain” because it’s $500 but does better then most $1k+ welders I’ve used for sheet metal.

    Sam, you need to try freezing stuck bolts. Either ice them down with CO2 from a welding supplier or an extinguisher. Get it icy. Or, pack dry ice chips in alcohol to make slush, pack it on the part, give it 5-10 minutes.
    Now torch the part. (Don't set alcohol vapors on fire.) You are thermal shocking the bolt, expanding and contracting the parts. Repeat 2-3x and pretty much everything spins free. Sometimes, just the one good cold shock is enough, do there's no risk of heat damage and detempering.
    Cautions about frostbite, fires, personal protective gear, working in airless closed spaces, all apply.

    They are irreplaceable when disassembling marine / outboard engines.

    Welding, BE CAUTIOUS, the cars ECU (computer) is easily damaged by the voltage output of a welder. Two options, you can buy a voltage damper which connects to the battery terminals, or the less expensive way, disconnect the battery then touch the terminals together, This action “earths” any leftover power stored in the ECU and prevents damage to the delicate electronic brain of the car. You have been warned. Great work Sam. I’ve recently discovered you and love your videos.

A few days before the job, soak the $h!t out of all the nuts, bolts, and studs with penetrating oil, and repeat a few more times before starting the job. I have had good luck with different brands of penetrating oil. I understand that 50/50 automatic transmission fluid/acetone blend also works well.

    Another great video. One recommendation, if you're going to weld a nut on a stud, do it right at the bottom where it enters the hole. You won't lose the torque that you did welding it up that high. But like has been said, you were never going to get that bolt out anyway.

    I used to work at a plant that manufactured parts for AC Delco. I also was given the daily task of using a drill press to removed the AC Delco logo from the same part....which were presumably sent to another company

      J Blob not really because there are still enough people that buy Porsche direct parts. Especially people who have money, who are usually the ones buying Porsche. FCP Euro type of companies exist for every car manufacturer; I’ve bought many parts for my Camry in the same way.

      I wish they would package stuff better. I know UPS is rough on things, so do they. They should use more than single wall cardboard and one piece of tape for a large 40lb package. About 25% of the shipments I get from them are damaged. Some very badly. Even Amazon beats that average and they use pretty sparse packaging too.

    Sam,
    I wouldn't have replaced those disc brake rotors unless they are out of tolerance (too thin) or warped. The rust will clean off the rotor after braking hard a few times.

    On your broken bolt, you welded on...replacing the screwdriver bit with a socket adaptor with a socket, on your hand/hammer/impact driver may have helped to get it out. I have a snap on hammer/impact that has a 3/8 square adaptor on it.

  • @lrowlands53
    @lrowlands53 5 лет назад

    You can do the same thing as an impact driver by hammering a Phillips screwdriver into the screw. It breaks any galvanic bonds in the thread. I was a motorcycle mechanic years ago and it was standard practice on engine cases/covers. My impact driver (c.1977) sat in my toolbox unused once I learned this trick.

  • @mcduvall2000
    @mcduvall2000 5 лет назад

    You should use an impact driver! It's similar to a drill and an impact wrench but it uses a 1/4 quick connect, all major power tool manufacturers make them. It what I use 99% percent of the time now, the only time I use a drill now is for actually hole drilling. I highly reccomend you get one! Let me know if you do!

    When I was in HS we had an automotive class. My teacher wanted us to bend the break line pipes for a 1974 mustang...I tried my best but it was a flop lol. Some days later he said he found the parts from a mustang shop that does old mustangs. I asked him where it was at and funnily enough I grew up right by it all my life. I walked by it every time I went to school. Yet, I forgot about it but anyways I was the only one in charge of the breaks... Nobody in class knew how to set the drum breaks and the rust was beyond belief. I also had to replace the whole brake pedal and gas pedal because it was rusted so bad. Anyways, it all came together, hell we even painted some of it lol. I was probably 16-17 yrs old at the time. Did I tell you that it was the head principals car lol. If the brakes failed it would have been on us...no pressure tho lol. That's what the test drives are for.
    There was this other time we had to lube up the ball bearings but we didn't have the heavy duty stuff...I asked if it would work and he said "well we will see" 2 days later the thing welded together some miles away XD. We had to replace them.
    Well now I have a degree in Computer Science, I took a year off after college to clean my brain. Now I am refreshing and relearning some of the material so I ace the interviews. Then I plan to make a car youtube channel if I can get spare money from my CS job. Probably, 2025.

    When you hit the impact wrench or screwdriver what it does is it turns 1/4 turn so while you're hitting it the impact does shake free the rust but it also turns the screw just a little bit breaking it free

    Samcrac--Actually, the "impact screwdriver" you used is a manual impact driver. I have one from Snap-on and one from Proto Tools; I keep one in each car to aid in removal of lug nuts if I need to change a tire on the side of the road. These drivers come with 3/8" or 1/2" square drive for use with impact sockets (not chrome sockets). Some, like this one, also have adapters (1/4" and 5/16") and screwdriver bits for use in removing screws. You can control the amount of breakaway force applied to remove screws or bolts, so they can be more useful than a pneumatic or cordless impact wrench when dealing with rusty fasteners. It does help to spray some PB Blaster or other penetrating fluid to loosen the screws or lug nuts before attempting removal. Hondas have a particular problem with corroded screws during removal of brake rotors, so this is a must-have tool.
