- Weird History presents Timeline 1974. Timeline is going back to the '70s and revisiting some of the most poignant news, sports, culture and entertainment stories from 1974. From the debut of the Six Million Dollar Man, to Richard Nixon's resignation to Hammerin' Hank Aaron breaking MLB's Home Run record, a little bit of everything happened in '74.

I love watching this series. It weirdly gives me comfort to realize that, as a millennial, so many of the issues that we're facing now were fought in similar fashion 50 years ago. It really gives truth to the statement "history repeats itself" in a strangely satisfying way. Sad, sure, but I feel better knowing we're never alone in what we are facing. Thanks for that.

Most likely the husband was living a double life in the other town.

1974 was the year I got married. I was only 19. Truly a sign of the times. We’re approaching our 50th in 2024. Was a wonderful year.
Times had to be different then I too married at 19 and purchased our first home for $39k in our first year with a down payment of money we’d saved ourselves. I remind our Grandkids that they do not need all of the things that people consider a Necessity now that didn’t even exist in those days.

I still own a Led Zep overshirt I found in a storage unit 14 years ago and it's one of the more quality made shirts i own.
I would like to formally thank your producer for "forcing" you to include the story regarding "The Professor". The greatest drummer of all time and the greatest Canadian band too. RIP Neil Peart forever missed.

While Cleveland's 10 Cent Beer Night was one of the worst promotions, they actually played the Texas Rangers that night. The Houston Astros were still in the National League at the time, and apart from the all-star game and World Series, there was no interleague play yet.
Whenever Ihear about this I am reminded of one of the bars in my college town that did 10 cent beers several nights a week. There was another that did boilermakers for 35 cents all the time.

Met my high school sweetheart the day Nixon resigned. Had no idea she lived accross the road. Mood ring, patent leather two tone platform shoes, double knit slacks, silk shirts, Jovan musk oil cologne. Dude when I got that girl, I had it all.

It's going to be interesting to experience the world as my parents did in the year I was born. However, I've always said that the best part of being born in the '70s was growing up in the '80s...and I'm so grateful for that! 😎

That $1.99 restaurant commercial...Chopsteak. That was a generational thing I guess. During culinary school I worked at a butcher shop. Besides the fact that my grandfather could've afforded the better grade and cuts of meat before that I was bringing home really amazing steaks. He'd always make comments about Chopsteak. My father-in-law's ABSOLUTE favorite meal (I've worked at some really quality kitchens with amazing ingredients) is a fried bologna sandwich. It seemed so wild to me. Guys, WHATEVER YOU WANT.... "Chopsteak, let your gma cook it. She knows how I like it", "fried bologna sandwich, Oscar Meyer's on sale. The one in the red casing." lmfao. Took me over 10 yrs to realize that it's not just about the taste and the ingredients. It's the memory and nostalgia. When you grow up poor and things like that are a once a month kind of meal...it becomes the a favorite. Everyone eating it, together, good laughs... Good memories. Meatloaf sandwiches are where it's at for me now. I don't make it (which adds to it after 80 hours a week in the kitchen), I don't ever ask for it. My wife will make it on Monday nights sometimes and being Monday and Tuesday are my weekend. Meatloaf sandwiches on rare occasions I get to sit down and enjoy with my kids are the BEST little surprises.

The one thing from 1974 that I really remember was being locked up in a mental institution for 45 days. The old-school psych chemicals, which do their dirty work in the hippocampus, basically destroyed any other memory of that year. Most of what I know about 1974 comes from reading and from watching documentaries. It took me several years to build back my memory of anything after that. I guess I'll have to take your word for it.

I was sent to a young adult center in during the later part of the 80's. Luckily there weren't any medicinal experiments going on. It was all groups and discussions. Activities and other growing events to bolster self esteem and self worth. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I can't begin to understand or even imagine what or how you felt. Memory wipes aren't exactly what you want unless the traumatic experience is worse to remember than to erase it all. I hope that your fully recovered and are doing well. Take care, and keep on going!
One flew over the Cuckoo's nest (1975) really showed how terrible those institutions were. I'm so sorry you had to experience that hell. At least things have gotten better somewhat..

Ahh, the 70's.... I grew up in the 70's, the music, the fashion, the politics, it was a time where life was just simpler and in my humble opinion a time of fun. I met my wife in 79 and married in 81. We still love the music in fact I just bought a Fleetwood Mac album this week! This series is such an accurate representation of the era, I'm looking forward to more!

I was 4 in 1974. I live in Washington were Ted Bundy was raised and I'm telling you, I remember all of that about him. It was always on the news. I'm loving the 70's timeliness the best!! Great work guys!!!

I was 9 in '74, so forth grade and recall some of that went down that year, though I read later that Abba won the Eurovovision competition with Waterloo. I may have been familiar with it then, at least a couple of years later.

The 70s really does come across as quite grim in movies, TV shows and literature but then music seems to have it so glam and fun and really rebellious. My father just always uses the phrase "oh it was just grim"
I didn't see it that way. This was the year I graduated High School and started college so I was full of hope and promise.

I turned 12 this year and remember 90% of these things from the family watching the evening news with Walter Cronkite and having 2 thick daily newspapers, one delivered morning and the other the afternoon. I had a great childhood. The 70s were great for a lil tween!
Thank you for recalling the heyday of great newspapers. In the early 1980s, I started a career in which I was privileged to report for some of the best papers. By the middle part of the ensuing decade, it became clear the institution of journalism was dying. I've done fine with new ways to make a living, but the nation is in grave danger without any independent press.

I saw Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP) perform in November of 74 at the Henry Levitt Arena in Wichita Kansas... It was life changing. I had some good times in 74... but this was the best moment of the year for me.
I saw the same tour show in New Haven around the same time. I remember the Christmas tree on stage that electronically blew up at the end of the show. Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.
I was only 7, but I remember the song "Lucky Man" by ELP, my brother learned it on guitar and taught me. Great time and great music!

I Love Love Love this series. I was born in 1970 so I was just a young child when all this was going on, but I do remember some things about the 70's like the clothes, fondue parties, bean bag chairs, Macromere, disco, many tv shows from that time, riding in the back of a pick up truck was fun. It was safe to drink water directly from the garden hose, riding in the back of a station wagon, no one wore seat belts, I miss Sambos. Fancy stylish vans with a dark plastic window in the back. Atari when it first came out. I had a big wheel I used to ride for hours around the block. They used to make toy guns that looked like real guns, because there wasn't a bunch of mass shootings back then. Candy and bubble cigarettes. Used to love watching Chips, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Happy Days, Little House On The Prairie, Gilligan's Island reruns, Threes company, Sanford and Son, Etc etc. played outside till the street lights came on than you knew it was time to go inside. Life was simpler back than.

I watched Blazing Saddles at drive in. Six Million Dollar Man. I remember it all.
And while I did not know about D&D then... My friends and I role played as comic book characters. ( I did get into D&D years later after USMC ).

For me they remind me of a much better time! A much safer place, more respectful, more fun, and well if you were a kid like I was, born in 1967, so I grew up in the 70's, it was a incredibly fun time to grow up! I remember biking in the woods on the trails that led to Mud Lake! We had forts built out there. We'd go 🎣fishing🎣, swimming, hiking, exploring, and again biking. I remember the🌐Wide🌎World🌎World🌎of🌎Sports🌎, watching the Harlem Globetrotters, Indy Car🏁🏎Racing🏎🏁, and the best......Evel Knievel! Then we'd go out and build a ramp.(These rarely ended well!) We'd then decide what we'd jump and how many of said items we'd attempt to "soar over". Those old metal round🗑🗑garbage🗑🗑cans were usually the most used item. At the beginning of our "block/road" we had a decent hill which we usually used for 🛹🛹 skateboarding🛹🛹, but it worked as a speed booster for you bike as well. Again these never, or RARELY EVER ended well. Sometimes you'd land on the cans, & bounce off them. OUCH! Or if you were lucky? You'd clear the cans but land awkwardly and bounce across the road. Or the worst-case scenario would be landing either ON THE CANS front wheel first, or past the cans, again front wheel first, and then flip over onto your back and slide into home plate on the gravel. Also remember, the 70's kids never or again RARELY EVER wore ⛑🪖helmets🪖⛑, so kids would go home, many if us crying, bawling our eyes out, as Mom picked the road rash off our backs, arms, HEAD, and legs. We usually wore shorts too! Thankfully no one was ever hurt bad. No hospital runs although I'm sure I got a concussion or three. This may sound silly, crazy, and idiotic, and in some ways, I'll agree it was! However back then we didn't have smartphones attached to our heads like an extra appendage. We didn't have💻laptop👨💻👨💻computers💻, tablets, or multiple gaming systems, and hundreds of television channels. We had ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, & a couple of local unaffiliated stations. We had two. We played outside, we had to use our own devices for fun. Building forts, creating igloos in the winter time. We'd get together with our buddies and play football, baseball, basketball, or the most fun! HOCKEY! But in most cases we had use our IMAGINATIONS! It was truly an amazing time for me growing up in the 70's! I got to meet the Crusher, AWA All-Star Wrestler. I got to meet almost every Milwaukee Brewers players from 77-83. Times were so different! Considering they did Timeline 2020 They should do the 2000s and the 2010s to complete the 1970-2020 Timeline Chain before they complete the rest of the 1900s

Nixon ended the war. He started the seeds of good relations with China and ended our cold war with them. Signed anti ballistic missle treaty with Russia. Without those accomplishments, you might not have been around to post on here.
That's more important achievementsthan most ever in his position do. No he was not as likeable and personal as a Jimmy Carter as an example.
But nice guys don't always accomplish much.

I have a few 70s vinyls up on my ebay. My uncle passed a few years ago and low and behold in my garage 2 tubs full of vinyls from the 60s' 70's and 80's! What gems to find! I've kept a few for my self as you know there's nostalgia in the music. The 70s were a weird time but did in fact have great music. Love this series and can't wait if they go further back time!

they have my suspicions up . my son was murdered 6 years ago and the law has no doubt what happened . in the last 2 years one poi was injured so badly the cops had to give him months to recover before they could even talk to him . more recently a poi has been killed in an accident . me thinks they have a 5th column .
days ago a dreadful ' biker commune ' base burned to the ground , and it wasnt a small fire .
on a more upbeat note , i dont give a F how justice is achieved as long as it makes our county safer .
think about it . all the judge has to do is grumble " somebody oughtta throw a match on it " and i think L - E would have at it .
indy had daily fires a few years ago . when it finally subsided there wasnt an ally garage ( abandoned ) makeshift crackhouse left standing .

Lots of older greats out there but usually still playing their hay day stuff. Very few artists like Cher (maybe Elton John & Billy Joel) have constantly refreshed and stayed relevant for decades.

I'm a double major, one of them being history, so I frequently have long long talks with my mom about what the world was like when she was growing up, the music, the movies, the state of politics, etc. because I'm just so interested in it all, and yet I always end up learning something totally new from these videos! ✨
yeah these offer an amazing perspective into the pop culture and what was influencing everyday people in previous generations, not just what was in History books.

I love this channel and I’m really enjoying this series, a lot happened in 1974 even though I was only 2 years old going on 3. The event that stands out to me would be the Blazing Saddles, such a funny movie and holds up today.
1974 Defined movie and music culture this time! Seems a contrast from all of the 70’s years when it first boomed with ABBA and so many movies.

God, this is SO GOOD! You not only capture the big events, but you capture the spirit of the era. Look at those commercials: not an ounce of sarcasm in 'em. I actually surprised myself when I started crying at the weirdest moments.

In 1974 I graduated from university. Got myself a '72 orange Kawasaki 500 H1 to go with my '68 red Triumph Spitfire. Fun times for sure. Yup, as Bachman-Turner Overdrive sang that year I was: "Taking care of Business" 😄
