I have done around 2-3 ps4 repairs like this just by watching YT videos and i think ps4 is much easier compared to ps5. And the best part was i went to multiple ps4 repair shops before and they all took my money and didn't do anything and told me we cant fix this buy a new one so i did that and bought ps4 slim and after 4 month even it caused overheating problem so i took it up on my self to repair both changing thermal paste and everything
My dear, thank you, yes this is a complete disassembly, in just over 5 minutes of video will be saved for the future, my PS5 is new bought this month. Thanks for the detailing of the screws and the reminder attention to the flat cables. Very useful. It is not an activity for everyone, it requires care.
You can also find an authorized repair center and aside from deep cleaning, get the Liquid Metal reapplied especially if you play vertically. I had overheating issues and the fan going crazy with certain games and when I got my Ps5 checked, the insides were clean even the PSU. Apparently, the liquid metal slid down a bit creating a dry/hotspot on the APU. After the reapplication of Liquid Metal, my PS5 Runs like a champ with the sound of a sleeping baby even at intensely graphical demanding moments in games. :)
I took apart a drill once; it got soaked from a leak and needed some parts changed and cleaned so I gave it a go. So many steps and items to remember. After the clean and changeover of parts I ressembled and closed it up. It worked. But what was this little metal strip I had just found? A speed regulator. So power drops out and ramps up whenever it wants now lol. I watched the first 20 seconds of this and was like I’ll do this, easy. Another 20 seconds and I was like no way in hell. I love my PlayStation too much to break it through forgetting a step haha
This guide worked for me, thank you! My PS5 started shutting down randomly whilst playing PS5 games. I've had it since 2020. I've cleaned it once in that time by disassembly to remove the fan and clean fins only. After the shut downs, I had a look inside, and sure enough the PSU vents were clogged. The disassembly guide is a little simplistic (some stills that can be paused with arrows for each screw length and hole would be really handy), but by and large as comprehensive as one needs to get the job done. I had a marathon session after cleaning, not one shut down - where normally I'd have several in one evening. P.S. those silver screws are no joke!!
Get a small handheld vacuum with a bendable hose. If you take the fan out, you can bend the hose into the power supply and vacuum it out. I havent seen any dust buildup on mine and ive opened my ps5 4 times since owning it. The fan will get a decent amount of dust on it as well as the exhaust vents. But a nornal vacuum will reach those and you dont need a special mini vacuum for those. Im guessing as long as you consistently clean the fan and exhuast ports, the power supply won't get buildup on it.
So remind me again why I spent $546 dollars for a console that you have to demolish just to clean. When the ps4 I bought for $260 4 years ago performed perfectly without ever getting cleaned???
Very informative. My wife and i were able to do it together at 2am while drinking. Usually i cant do anything except turning any machine on and off. Somehow didn’t F anything up by just following step by step. Thanks.
You can just use a tooth brush after removing the fan. A standard one can reach. Then vaccuum or use compressed air. I also reccomend having it upside down while brushing so that the dust falls towards where the fan is.
My ps5 was over heating even after cleaning realize that it mainly overheated because i had my ps5 to close to the wall preventing proper ventilation. So make sure ya have yours in a well ventilated area
The anxiety I have watching you take this apart. Hahaha. I'm not even doing it and it's making me anxious about getting it back together. Love your videos! Always straight to the point with no garbage filler. One of the best on RUclips.
It's currently illegal to have the "warranty void if removed" sticker on products and yet Sony hasn't been called out on it on all PlayStation consoles. A law was passed sometime in the 1970s. When I heard about that I went ahead replaced my 12 year old PS3's thermal paste 2 years ago and it has been absolutely silent since then. Some thing with the fat PS4 going on to 8 years at the time. The amount of TP they put in the consoles were SUPER small which is why the fans are so loud. That and the thermal paste at the time was also dried up.
For the first generation of PS5s, not only you need to clean the dust as mentioned in the clip, but also you need to take a look at your liquid metal. the other day, I opened up mine and the LM was not in a good condition as it had several little dry spots on both MB and Heat sink. This process is even more difficult than just simply cleaning the dust out of power supply and the heat sink.
@@shakengandulf I completely get what you're saying. Although taking a look at LM is rather difficult for an average console user, but based upon my own console it is necessary to check it.
I’ve done all of this and I maintain my ps5 very well making sure the fan is clean and clear of dust and still my ps5 still gets very hot almost to the state of overheating I’m running out of ideas and solutions
Hey man, just want to say thank you so much. My power supply unit was choked with dust. Followed this video and got it done. I was so nervous and fearing i woukd wreck it. Never so happy to see a PS firing back into life. Thanks again ❤
You can solve/prevent 99% of the dust issues by removing the covers and the fan for a quick cleaning. Take compressed air and spray the console out thoroughly after a few wipes of the inner covers and tooth brush on the inner cooling grates, and put it back together. Job done. No need to take anything else apart. Several vids of this procedure online. If you do this once every 6 months you shouldn't ever have to do an extreme teardown like in this video. I just performed this on my disk version PS5 after only purchasing it last Black Friday and it had a lot of dust even for a non smoking environment. I agree the console needs a redesign but I am impressed with how easily it disassembles and allows for memory expansion.
I didn’t remove my fan, I just used a vacuum to clean inside and vent holes. It did the job, removed lots of dust and No more shutdowns (for now). Will make it a routine to do this every few months.
Best RUclips channel for everything P5 related!!! Thank you for creating these videos. It's much appreciated for those who may need some guidance. Keep up the good work!!!
So, if you send your PS5 to sony they will clean it for you? That sounds a lot easier and safer than all of this. Is it free? How long does it usually take?
So I've had my PS5 since launch day. I took my system apart just like you showed, but my system was not dusty. Ya there was a small amount, but I spent an hr doing this and didn't need to. Good video though
I felt like I was doing open heart surgery just installing an SSD, I don't think I would even try to do this on my own, but thanks for making great how to videos like this one
Great tutorial. Just finished disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling after following this tutorial, step by step. I would recommend going further than just taking the fan out, as I tried that the first time, but my PS5 was still overheating. Once I got to the power supply,it was immediately apparent that was the problem from the amount of dust deep down in the console. I’m also going to leave my console horizontal to help increase the airflow and hopefully not have any issues with the mercury in the future.
Whoever engineered this ps5 should be on the unemployment line this system is gonna clog up on everyone that don’t know any different!!! Absolutely unacceptable. The worst thing about it is it will start giving you trouble when the warranty is up because I got 2 years and now it won’t play ps5 games for more than 30 min. I might buy my first Xbox in my entire life as I’ve been a PlayStation guy since ps1!!!
OMG JOHN YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN SAVED ME AND MY MARRIAGE. MY PS5 WAS OVERHEATING EVERY DAY AND WAS GETTING IN THE WAY OF MY SEXUAL ESCAPADES WITH MY 7 WIVES. NO MORE DUST AND OVERHEATING IN MY LIFE ANYMORE. THE ONLY OVERHEATING IN MY LIFE FROM NOW ON IS THANKFULLY IN THE BEDROOM.
I haven't tried to take apart a game console beyond removing the top case since my old PS2 launch model design I had in 2009. That time the power ribbon got accidentally yanked out from the motherboard and even when buying a replacement power ribbon the console never turned on again. It would take forever for me to learn how to disassemble electronics such as game consoles confidently and put them back together
i’m getting anxious just thinking about this as i’ve never taken apart a console but i think if i sit down and do it with this video ill be able to. i’m gonna update this comment.
I'm literally in the exact same boat here. Gonna try later today with this video as well, been dragging my feet about cleaning it, but I'm tired of not being able to play anything lmao
you know, there are a TON of videos on this topic but i really appreciated this one for being through and complete. So man people stop after the teardown and fix but never show you how to put it back together but you did the whole thing. That is commendable and eaarned a subscription for from me. beyond that thank you b/c this did the trick for me. Beyond that the teardown and build up sections of the video were great. In the future however maybe quickly teach and remind people about static discharge and how to deal with it (ground themselves) after moving around.
I keep a small cleaned cooling fan pointing at the vents. Finally, I took apart my ps5 and noticed I barely had any dust build-up! I always make sure my cooling fan is 100% clean!!
I also recommend gamers to clean their rooms (mop/vacuum/sweep/dust) and replace your house or apartment air filter to FPR 9 or above (or close to 2200). AND dont forget to replace it every few months or so.
How often does the PSU get dusty? I dunno what kind of environments people live in my but I've had my PS5 for 2.5 years and there's barely any dust inside.
I did this before, you should watch TronicsFix video on opening the ps5 for a more depth+tools links for doing what this video does. Be very careful, if you feel like you don't have the patience or time, do it another day, or don't open it as much. The one and only time I did, I forgot the blue ribbon cable that connects the external buttons to the actual console (on/off, eject) and my heart stopped. I only clean the first side vents and inside the area with the fan now.
I done this ro the point of getting the fan off and then used pipe cleaner brush, cotton buds & hoover to get all the gunk of the heatsink. Was too nervous to take the whole thing apart. Seems to have sorted the issue, so thank you 👍
I think in non smoking room as mine clearing fan once each 6 months will do the job together with clearing outside dust that collects on surface for like every 10 days . I play about 3 hours each day at least and if I intend to play again I make 2 hours pause and completely turn off console. Even after 3 hours I can barely feel warmth on ps5 when I touch it with hand. Also i dont ever hear fan working unlike with ps4 which had habbit to go crazy with games like God of war and similar. Also clearing fan of ps5 is so much easier compared to ps4 ( slim ) and God forbid ps3 where I had to completely take apart entire console ( ps3 slim ) . I think ps5 is really friendly console regarding all this.
Would a powerful vacuum cleaner not achieve the same thing? They should have had a warning. Do NOT remove the heatsink from the GPU as this has liquid metal which can ruin the motherboard if you are not expecting it.
Very easy nice one mate. Got to the fan myself but couldn't for the life of me find the last screws to do a full clean. Turns out that vent is removable... who'd of thunk
Thank you for this! My son’s PS5 was doing weird stuff. We cleaned the vents and took out the fan but never saw those holes. I just took it apart again and all those holes were full of dust. 😳
I had this issue with my PS5,I clean the fan and used a toothbrush the clean the dust off my power supply. After that I bought a vertical PS5 with cooling fans, and got 3 more cooling fans attached the back,so it's keeping the bottom cool and back side. A total of 5 cookings fans. No more problems.
This was great, thank you! I found a huge dustball in mine and the power supply was well caked in dust. All back together now and working - just waiting to see if the issue is resolved. Thanks again.
Can you do a guide for the 1215A model? I know the screw layout is different and I would love to take it apart w/o disturbirbing the liquid metal as you did in this guide.
I’ve been using an air compressor to avoid taking the PlayStation apart. So far so good. Ps5 used to overheat when playing games at 120fps. Blasted it from every hole and angle I could with a high psi air compressor and have been all good ever since. I’ve done it twice so far without issue. Just be sure to put something through the fan so it can’t spin.
I’ve had my PS5 since launch day, I’ve never cleaned it and it works perfectly. I checked it out when I upgraded the nvme and it hardly looked like any dust was in there. So many people will destroy their consoles doing this.
This video will be saved for later because while my PS5 is still within the warranty, I wouldn't dream of doing this. After it's warranty expires I might give it a go. But since my PS4 ran for 5 years before it's first clean-up, I'm confident the PS5 will handle just as well.
I did this without taking the whole thing apart. I just removed the covers and removed the fan and took my air compressor with my long rubber air tire inflator and just stuck it in there and blew it out and mainly took it and pushed the air through the backside of the ps5 where the vents are. It looks brand new in there now.
Bought the darkplates 2.0 they have mesh filters on both sides of intake fan. This will dramatically reduce dust buildup. Had 0 issues since launch day. Just keep a tidy room and keep pets away.
Thanks for adding this to my next clean up time with the PS5. Last clean up was with the fan and heatsink. I just gotta get some confidence in disassembling ribbon cables and cables in general on this console. Any tips?
I used to love taking apart and reassembling consoles/pcs but they're getting way too complicated so I think those days are over. Always feel like I'm gonna break the ribbon cables regardless.
Yeah no I'm good I don't have the confidence to take apart my PS5 I'm too scared to take it apart and put it back together I have the tools for it because I have the iFixit deluxe tool set so it has everything But I lack the confidence to do it I rather take my PS5 to this place 1-800 fix and they will clean it up for a low price which I did a few days ago I took my PS3 slim to 1-800 fix because I couldn't stand the extremely loud fan noise anymore so they cleaned it up and applied a new thermal compound paste now it's officially whisper quiet no matter what PS3 game I play 😍
If im taken more than 50% apart of console just to clean one small part i really cant put it together. Just send it or go to retro repair store that specializes in cleaning consoles
The only thing I'm going to remove is the fan. I'm not removing anything else because I don't want to damage my system. If I need deeper cleaning, please send it to Sony.
Thanks for the video John! My PS5 was overheating because of a very dusty power supply. Your video helped me tremendously. On a side note: I really hate ribbon cables 😭
I’ve had this issue since December and I’ve been too scared to take the whole thing apart. I’ve Taken the fan out before and cleaned it along with the heat sink at the top by the fan. The issue still happens though. What do you think?
Appreciate the guide but did anyone else peep that the dust catcher hole is literally right there in front of the power supply? So if you literally just vaccum the dust catchers like Sony originally said I'd assume most people won't have this issue
THE front led light ribbon cable is supposed located inside the grove along the edge outside of the fan hole. If you just let it placed on top like in 03:42 , you are likely going to damage the cable when putting the long screw back to the fan bracket.
my ps5 has been shutting off by itself after only 30 mins use. guess i have no choice but to give this a try update: just cleaned it out last night (followed the video exactly and was much easier than I expected) and just played 2 hours of dead space remake perfectly fine. Couldn't get more than 20-30 mins before losing power prior to cleaning. thanks for the video!

I started covering my console while not in use. I don't use rest mode. I turn it off completely and cover it to prevent dust build-up.
This was exactly the issue. Fixed it. Didnt need to take it apart, but the first 30 seconds was all i needed to hear. Thanks 🔥🔥🔥
So how did you do it ???
@@anusenpai6945if you know how to remove ur fan then u got this easily...i just fixed mine.
Just took out my fan.. And got a small little vacuum hose and put it directly on that power supply vent and vacuumed it.. But at first i was scared and just grabbed a small paintbrush i had and slid my hand in tha p5 wit that brush and just cleaned it that way then i was thinking.....
"Why dont i try and remove all that dust i just knocked INTO my power supply since i just cleaned everything else"???
so i vacuumed after... But its not a necessary step.
How much did that cost you??
...
Asking for a friend..
🥴
@@catastrophe218 In the philippines, it cost me around 30-40 bucks.
I've taken just about every game systems apart and successfully put them back together in working order. This video is very helpful 👌
Good job 👍🏻 hopefully you never need to but if it ever happens it's not too bad
Very informative. My wife and i were able to do it together at 2am while drinking. Usually i cant do anything except turning any machine on and off. Somehow didn’t F anything up by just following step by step. Thanks.
IMAGINE REACHING THE POWER SUPPLY AND SEEING IT CRYSTAL CLEAR 💀
Lmao right I’ll just buy a new one fuck that
just out of curiosity how much does it cost to send it in to clean?
You can just use a tooth brush after removing the fan. A standard one can reach. Then vaccuum or use compressed air.
I also reccomend having it upside down while brushing so that the dust falls towards where the fan is.
I think I'd rather not, but thanks. It's an insane amount of work and I don't feel confident enough to do this without breaking cables or sockets.
Finally someone who shows it correctly, step by step, thanks for that! 💯
That was the goal, no problem!
I appreciate it thank you
It's currently illegal to have the "warranty void if removed" sticker on products and yet Sony hasn't been called out on it on all PlayStation consoles.
I lay mine horizontally. Ive cleaned it twice in a year and it really hasn't been very dirty.
That's good!
I would not recommend this at all, no one needs to check the liquid metal.
@@shakengandulf I completely get what you're saying. Although taking a look at LM is rather difficult for an average console user, but based upon my own console it is necessary to check it.
I would rather have a professional technician do the work for me instead of myself screwing up my system.
You really can't screw it up tbh everything just snaps back can't really go wrong unless u break a connector
I’ve done all of this and I maintain my ps5 very well making sure the fan is clean and clear of dust and still my ps5 still gets very hot almost to the state of overheating
I’m running out of ideas and solutions
Thank you for all of your vids. You always are straight to the point and don’t beg your audience for a like for 5 minutes straight
Well said....👍
I also gave u a like...🤔
Hey man, just want to say thank you so much.
User manual says nothing about canned air. It specifically stated use a vacuum
@@Nick-uy9wv either works just fine. Canned air does not have the psi necessary to damage the internals of the unit.
I didn’t remove my fan, I just used a vacuum to clean inside and vent holes. It did the job, removed lots of dust and No more shutdowns (for now).
Will make it a routine to do this every few months.
You do not got to take the fan out of old just use compressed air on the power supply through the fan whole when u take the fan out
Best RUclips channel for everything P5 related!!!
Thank you for creating these videos.
It's much appreciated for those who may need some guidance.
Keep up the good work!!!
That means a lot, thank you
If anyone wants to do this , please make sure you have the CORRECT TOOLS! Before you begin . Thanks for the video
What are the tools? Share a link on where to get them if you can…. Please? 🙏
Yes always
So, if you send your PS5 to sony they will clean it for you? That sounds a lot easier and safer than all of this. Is it free? How long does it usually take?
about 220.00 and may take a cpl weeks
@@Peppy34420 Okay, thank you for the answer
its kind of sad really, i would just buy a new one at that point lol
@@Emily_North
I have a filter modification on my channel
Guys Take a screenshot of everything before you unplug anything
Or even better if you record it
So you don't get confused when putting it together
OMG JOHN YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN SAVED ME AND MY MARRIAGE. MY PS5 WAS OVERHEATING EVERY DAY AND WAS GETTING IN THE WAY OF MY SEXUAL ESCAPADES WITH MY 7 WIVES. SINCE YOUR LAST VIDEO I ADDED ANOTHER WIFE JUST LIKE YOU HAVE ADDED ANOTHER INFORMATIVE VIDEO TO THIS CHANNEL WOE IS TO THE ONES WHO DO NOT WATCH THIS.
Great info as always but in my circumstance, I’ll leave it to the professionals or I’ll be buying a new PS5 🤣
I'd rather buy one of those cooling stands than do this because 1. My patience is short and 2. This looks like too much aggravation.
nice but i guess my ps5 will just overheat :(
Try the angle brush method listed up above
i’m getting anxious just thinking about this as i’ve never taken apart a console but i think if i sit down and do it with this video ill be able to. i’m gonna update this comment.
I'm literally in the exact same boat here. Gonna try later today with this video as well, been dragging my feet about cleaning it, but I'm tired of not being able to play anything lmao
Am gonna say this for many of us: NO THANK YOU😐✋
you know, there are a TON of videos on this topic but i really appreciated this one for being through and complete.
No way I'm doing any of this, I'll just buy another one 😂
😂
Get a slim or a pro version...🤔
I keep a small cleaned cooling fan pointing at the vents. Finally, I took apart my ps5 and noticed I barely had any dust build-up! I always make sure my cooling fan is 100% clean!!
Once you start you won’t be gaming for about 2 years.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I also recommend gamers to clean their rooms (mop/vacuum/sweep/dust) and replace your house or apartment air filter to FPR 9 or above (or close to 2200).
AND dont forget to replace it every few months or so.
How often does the PSU get dusty? I dunno what kind of environments people live in my but I've had my PS5 for 2.5 years and there's barely any dust inside.
Same all about being clean
I did this before, you should watch TronicsFix video on opening the ps5 for a more depth+tools links for doing what this video does. Be very careful, if you feel like you don't have the patience or time, do it another day, or don't open it as much. The one and only time I did, I forgot the blue ribbon cable that connects the external buttons to the actual console (on/off, eject) and my heart stopped. I only clean the first side vents and inside the area with the fan now.
Yes, TronicsFix is very good and detailed in his videos.
I done this ro the point of getting the fan off and then used pipe cleaner brush, cotton buds & hoover to get all the gunk of the heatsink. Was too nervous to take the whole thing apart.
Seems to have sorted the issue, so thank you 👍
The 1200 series made a hole for you to clean the power supply without having to take the system apart, very helpful when I'm cleaning it!
I absolutely do not trust myself to do all of this without completely breaking my console. Think I'll just stick to hoovering without disassembling
It's quite amazing how you managed to create 20 videos about the same thing.
Very easy nice one mate. Got to the fan myself but couldn't for the life of me find the last screws to do a full clean. Turns out that vent is removable... who'd of thunk
This process is easier than PS4 for sure. PS4 teardown was annoying.
I really appreciate that you show the steps to re-assemble the system as well! Believe it or not lots of people leave that out.
You don’t need to do all that if u have a 1200 model. They have a cut where the power supply is and u can easily clean it
3:36 one of those screws won't go in at all. What am I doing wrong? It just keeps spinning? Did i lose a part?
If in doubt take pictures during disassembly! That way you have a reference during reassembly.
May not be a bad idea to wear a grounding wrist band, to avoid damaging your motherboard with static.
I would recommend taking a close up photo at each step.
Yup us car guys know what to do . Same way I did it. Forget taking the whole thing apart. 😊
@@willharris2607 I’m a detailer. Same story here 😂
I’ve had my PS5 since launch day, I’ve never cleaned it and it works perfectly. I checked it out when I upgraded the nvme and it hardly looked like any dust was in there. So many people will destroy their consoles doing this.
I used the cool setting on a blowdryer and blew it through every hole with the cover off. I hoovered them first. No overheating since🤞
This video will be saved for later because while my PS5 is still within the warranty, I wouldn't dream of doing this.
Without first watching the video to the end. Surely once you've removed the fan you can get some flexible hoover attachment in there?
Easy enough especially with this video its so helpful, a complete teardown then assembly. 👏
Bought the darkplates 2.0 they have mesh filters on both sides of intake fan. This will dramatically reduce dust buildup. Had 0 issues since launch day. Just keep a tidy room and keep pets away.
To prevent dust accumulation, simply cover the PS5 with a pillowcase when not in use.
Mine way covered in dust!! Thank you for the video. I hope this helps my overheating problem
Helped my little brother do this on his ps5. Hopin it actually makes a difference!
My warranty expires in December so I hope nothing happens
The only thing I'm going to remove is the fan. I'm not removing anything else because I don't want to damage my system. If I need deeper cleaning, please send it to Sony.
Thanks for the video John! My PS5 was overheating because of a very dusty power supply. Your video helped me tremendously.
On a side note: I really hate ribbon cables 😭
I’ve had this issue since December and I’ve been too scared to take the whole thing apart. I’ve Taken the fan out before and cleaned it along with the heat sink at the top by the fan. The issue still happens though. What do you think?
Solution: micro vacuum with long reaching hose to clean power supply area
Appreciate the guide but did anyone else peep that the dust catcher hole is literally right there in front of the power supply? So if you literally just vaccum the dust catchers like Sony originally said I'd assume most people won't have this issue
THE front led light ribbon cable is supposed located inside the grove along the edge outside of the fan hole. If you just let it placed on top like in 03:42 , you are likely going to damage the cable when putting the long screw back to the fan bracket.
my ps5 has been shutting off by itself after only 30 mins use. guess i have no choice but to give this a try
update: just cleaned it out last night (followed the video exactly and was much easier than I expected) and just played 2 hours of dead space remake perfectly fine. Couldn't get more than 20-30 mins before losing power prior to cleaning. thanks for the video!
