How to Clean Your PS5 Safely - 3 Stages - From easiest to hardest. While you're PS5 shouldn't be needing a deep clean yet, I wanted to have a video ready when you need. Stage 1 is basically cleaning both intake areas and the covers. Stage 2 is basically removing and cleaning the fan and the heat sinks accessible through the fan hole. And Stage 3 is basically taking everything apart and cleaning it.

Anyone intimidated by stage three; I just finished doing it to mine that I hadn't cleaned since bought in 2021, really not as bad as you might think. Here are some tips n small issues I ran into along the way:
1.) Make sure you go out and buy a t8 screwdriver bc odds are you don't already have one in your tool box, and pliers are a must for some of the cables.
2.) Have a way to separate the screws and organize them so that you know where they go back. I did like four Tupperware dishes and ust assigned each stage to one dish, then as I took them out I placed them in a circle trying to mirror the general shape of their orientation within the console.
3.) He puts back some of the screws in the wrong places in this video, try and mark holes where there was no screw to begin with as you unscrew the protective metal plate.
4.) After you unscrew all 41 screws, the cover will still take some coaxing to get off of the motherboard as there is adhesive holding it there, don't brute force it. I went gently around the edge with a flat screwdriver and then pulled up using the top left and bottom right corners.
Thanks for this. I also posted a comment calling out how unhelpful this tutorial was in many ways bc of all that he left out or straight up did wrong and then corrected without even addressing it lol
T8 Security, learn from my mistake, tough to screw them back on. Dont use too much force, if you feel some resistance its good enough.

If you don’t take a part electronics often, I’d recommend to just clean the the first two stages because you’re taking a risk albeit a smaller one. If you have animals, I was told to put the console up at a higher location even if it looks tacky, it still may be worth it.
I agree, honestly I never take apart my electronics because I am worried I won’t be able to put it back together. If you don’t do this stuff often, it’s best to take your console to a professional to have it cleaned in a safe environment and to ensure nothing goes wrong.
Gotta start somewhere if you’re too scared to start you will never get good at it

The two holes on the console are actually supposed to be vacuumed. You put a vacuum over the hole to suck dust through the entire system. This is a very specific and deliberate design consideration from Sony to prevent consoles from building up too much dust and becoming loud over time. It was explained in PlayStation's offical teardown video. That is the 1 and only way to officially clean your system and the most effective way to remove all dust from the air channels.
Which holes are u talking about?

You make it look so easy when you slide the covers back on. Mine are like "We refuse to go back in there!"

Seriously, had to look up another video just to know how to take it off. Pull up AND slide down. Piece of cake. Glad I didn't break it.
Spent 2 hours last night disassembling, then reassembling my PS5.
My day 1 launch console from 2020 had been having moderate to severe overheating issues over the past few months, to the point where the system would suddenly shutdown without warning about an hour or two of playing any game. I knew it was due to overheating, because I experienced the same issue with my PS4 Pro a few years back before I opened it up and fully wiped out all the dust from the heatsinks, motherboard, and power supply...So I knew I would have to do the same exact thing here with the 5.
The internals of my system were fully caked with dust in certain areas of the heatsink and powersupply, which was causing the overheating and airflow issues. I used a dedicated electronic vaccum cleaner, microfiber cloths, and a toothbrush to completely clean out all the dust.
The console is now running super cool and doesn't get hot to the touch near the base like it used to, and I shouldn't have any more severe overheating issues for a few more years hopefully.
Seriously this video saved my PS5
It was experiencing extreme lag and suddenly cut out. Turns out there was a ton of dust in the fan, and I had no idea how to clean it.
Found this video, followed the cleaning steps for the fan, and now it's not on the verge of blowing up many thanks 👍

I just recently cleaned and applied new thermal paste on my buddies 1st gen PS4 he bought at the exact same time as I did from Amazon. The heatsink had a 2-3 inch thick mound of dust and cat hair compacted that felt like a thick sponge from him constantly using duster. His thermal paste was literally dust because he let it overheat over and over before finally having me fix it. He let it overheat so bad it caused his hdd to fail because if it.

My PS5 started unexcpectly turning off this week, although it's insured I didn't want to have to go down that rabbit hole of agro (British word for effort, hassle, trouble lol), of contacting them and being without it probably for a few weeks, so I decided to follow your really helpful video of properly cleaning...
I've always opened my ps5 every few months to clean it but I never had the tools or confidence to remove the fan and clean that out, this time I did with the right tools, im not going as far as removing the Motherboard or anything that's too advanced for me, but ive managed to clean the fan, heat-sync and even managed with a bit of a vacuum/blower and brush to clean out the power supply grille inside too through the fan gap, the console is spotless inside and out now as best as it can be, and I was amazed at how much dust and crud had actually built up inside there, even though I keep it clean and in a position that's not on the floor or blocked airflow, it was that gunked up.....I have owned it since Oct 2021, and this is the first time I've taken the fan out to clean so maybe it's just time.... thankfully re-assembled and it all seems good and fan spinning.... so hopefully no more overheating and shutting down!

I keep a small paintbrush in my drawer for such occasion
Those work great for loose dirt. I sometimes use a similar brush. Many times dust is cakes on and won't come off with the softer bristles and that's when you need something with stiffer bristles.

Stage 2 cleaning every 6 months is undoubtedly necessary as stage 1 will not remove the dust that accumulates on the fan (which leads to excessive load and wear on the bearings, in turn causing overheating issues), so everyone who owns a ps5 should follow this video to stage 2 - It really is as simple as getting that Torx driver to unscrew the fan. GUYS - I cannot emphasize enough to be EXTRA careful when 'trying' to pull out the fan connector, I followed this video to the tee and the whole "yellow" piece connected to the motherboard came out despite just pulling on the white connector. And now, I sit here with essentially a broken PS5 which was working fine. Curiosity indeed killed the cat and so did my meticulous nature in wanting to clean the PS5 even when it was ok. Not only did I spend money on the air blower and the torque screws, but I've lost the PS5 :)
PS: for a stage 2 clean I would HIGHLY reccommend leaving in the connector, as once you unscrew the 4 screws from the fan, it comes apart anyway enough for u to complete a stage 2 clean. I do not want anyone else feeling what I am right now haha.
@seriustraco glad someone listened because on videos from channels with large followings, whether fake or real, u see 99.9 % of comments saying the same things, but the comments that are rare or stand out usually speak the truth.
Quite surprised going through the comments that not one person mentioned this, and neither did the video really emphasize the importance of being extra careful when removing the connector.
How did ur clean go? Did u realise what I meant by leaving the connector in while still being able to somehwhat move the fan enough to get into the areas needed for the so-called 'stage 2' clean? Even if my advice helped one person, then I am glad.
Luckily, I managed to get my PS5 fixed within 3 days, and it actually runs better than ever due to the clean! 🙂
Dang... I've no confidence in taking apart my PS5. Tronic made it look so easy.
Me neither I feel like I would just break something 😬
Make that 3 I just got my ps5 on 9/22/21
I did it with ps4 but im not as confident with ps5. If you have a vacuum attachment and are willing to remove the fan (thats as far as ive got) then it should be enough to vacuum the most important areas
Tip: before attempting stage 3, please note there is a sticker covering one of the screws which may void your warranty if peeled. After stage 2, I was able to look inside and saw lots of dust on the power supply. Picked up a shop vac microtool set from Lowe’s and I could clean it from the fan opening. No more random shut downs
Stage 3 is ridiculously overkill. Nobody should ever really need to do that. Honestly, stage 1 is sufficient in most cases.
I just did stage 2 and glad I did. I've had my console since launch and I was surprised there was actually a good amount of dust within the fan and the blades, as well as portions of the heatsink.
I agree with stage 3 being overkill as well tho, I couldn't see me doing that as long as I continue to routinely clean my console from now on every few months
Stage 2 here
Part of my house is on construction and I sense a little bit warmer while playing with ps5
I disassembly and I'm shocked the amount of dust the fan has.
Stage 1 is actually not going to be sufficient if you value the longevity of your console - You do need to clean some of the heatsinks and the fan to remove the dust buildup which a stage 1 cleaning will not allow you to do.
@@jine7123 I'm skeptical of that because I never went beyond the equivalent of "stage 1" for my PS3 or PS4, and those are still working fine. Most users will never even attempt to open their console, much less take it apart and reverse-engineer the entire unit just for maintenance. If that were truly necessary, the vast majority of consoles would be dead within a few years. Granted, a lot of people take horrible care of their things, and they'd probably last a lot longer if they took better care. But manufacturers of mainstream consumer electronics do their best to design things to be mostly "idiot-proof" knowing that most people are not going to clean the internals of their game console.
@@ArcadianGenesis I'm already having overheating issues with my PS5 in less than 15 months, which didn't start occurring with my PS4 until year 4 or 5. I don't think previous histories with the older consoles is a good metric here.
So I managed to follow along and got my console back to 100% top condition.
Only issue I ran into was with how the video moved screws around. It nearly caused me to make a few mistakes along the way, but i managed to figure out the rest on my own.
Still a great video
My suggestion for those who don't want to go through 2 & 3. Regularly dust the area around your console at least once a week. Stage 1 will be all you need to do. Wipe your console down & make sure your vents etc. Are clear. If you want I suggest a high quality 3rd party cooling fan don't go cheap most are rip offs.
Once a week if you’re a daily gamer but twice a mo. If you’re a casual
This video is gonna age like fine wine just give it two years 👌🏾 🍷
I never have the balls to actually take my consoles apart, just incase I break it. So I tend to just clean around the fan area and vents!
Don't worry man I'm the same way and I'm sure a ton of other people do as well 😂
Same but my air nossle got stuck in the fan to clean orn own
It's the same for me
I'm with u man haha...especially these next gen systems ...u break one of these and u prolly won't get one for a other year or 2...it's crazy man...but honestly this guy is doing too much...they make these machines in a way that you really aren't supposed to take Ethan apart like this man...the best thing to do is take the plates off and use a duster can like u use for a keyboard and cleaner around and in the fan, wipe the dust away everywhere else and call it a day...u don't have to do all this man...
@@gambino48 I was cleaning it and the spray nozzle got in so I was forced to open it up it wasn’t that bad but I did scratch it but I got it all cleaned
My PS5 kept crashing a crashing even though I cleaned the fan. But I didn‘t know about the power supply. And with step 3 I cleaned it thoroughly and now it‘s great!!! Best video!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was totally shocked by how dusty my PS5 was!
Thank you so much for the clear and concise walkthrough! Another user pointed out, during the rebuild, the placement of the 41 screws had an error. You need to save one silver screw to for the disc drive after you put the midframe back on. I also noticed a lot of heat paste that seemed to come off easily for you, but my 2-year-old unit ripped most of the paste in half. I'm concerned that I may lose some heat transfer efficiency because I didn't replace the dried paste.
How's it running so far?
Other than you putting a couple of the 42 screws in wrong, it was a good instructional to follow. Had to go back to when you originally took them out to get them in the right spots
Love how the fan that is one of the parts that needs the most cleaning needs a t8 torc security screwdriver
I know I'll be back here in 2 or 3 years, thank you for the detailed walk through
❤ thanks buddy , 4 hours later and I did a full strip down and clean of everything , using slow mo and some screen caps this was by far the best overhaul of a Playstation that I've done and I've done one on every model , thanks !!
I thought the vaccum vents are intended to have the whole mouth of the vacuum hose over the vent
@Kratos GodofWar so we don't need any new attachment for the vacuum to clean the dust from dust catcher?
Could there be a dual sense controller cleaning instruction?
I might do that. That's a good idea. I wasn't sure how many people would want to watch something like that.
@@Tronicsfix A fair amount. They have Steam support now so people are buying them for PC gaming too! (also based on ps4 controllers they will get grimey quick!)
@@Tronicsfix Just for me persont, the back of the controller is really easy to get dirrty.
i guess you should lubricate the motor so it will cost for a special grease/paste. I hope Sony will upload a video soon to clarify it .
@@Tronicsfix i'd want to see the best way to clean a dualsense sticks to prevent the awful stick drift
So far my PS5 has been fine with just stage 2 cleaning but I have friends who I have done stage 2 cleaning for a few times and before long they're getting the 'ps5 too hot' message. I can tell from where the heat is built up that it is from the heatsinks that can't be cleaned with just stage 2, so gonna have to learn stage 3 to help the boys 💪
As much as I want to clean mine I'm honestly terrified to take it apart bc if I break something I'm gonna be very upset... Ik the struggle is real out there and I'm not trying to go back to that 😭😭😭
Giggity
How do pull the covers off so easily? I nearly bent mine in half trying to take it off.
You have to pull up on the corner while you push it back
Pull up on the corner with the PS logo while sliding it off

This thing sucks in more dust than my vacuum. Super helpful vid!
Stage1: Sell a kidney
Stage2: Buy a PS5
Stage3: Let it sit in the dust
I've saved myself a ton of money using this video, thank you! Deep cleaned my PS5 4 times now and this is my go to video
I'm here cause my damn PS5 randomly shuts off in the middle of playing all the time
Same thing mine is doing
@@NiardDrainllc tried to fix it bye buying a new fan & I did and it's still cutting off in the middle of playing without warning. Keeps doing it. It ain't nothing but a paper weight at this point. Useless.
I just got one. Prolly gonna clean it once a month or every other month. I want it to last the entire generation.
Same dude
I refuse to go anywhere else for tutorials, this guy makes it so easy and comfortable. Just got done cleaning a bargain smokers ps5 i bought. All spit shine now
Stage 1 got me messed up
I’m so scared of breaking the cover
Don't worry it pops right off if you pull a bit hard, just need to pull on both sides
Now on to stage 2.
You would be a real man if you can manage stage 3.
@@tr1bes I made it through stage 3 thank God 😥, it’s all a blur to me now though. Half way through when I had to flip it over the spacer for the expansion memory fell out on my lap and I about lost my mind… I couldn’t figure out where it came from haha. I eventually figured it out though, ps5 turned back on and running as quiet as when I bought it.
I did stage one and called it a day man😂
Coming in 2 years after release. I did notice a few minor details. Still was able to disassemble fairly easily because the steps are literally the same. To anyone that is scared to clean ps5: if you follow the steps exactly like in the video. You will be fine.
Thanks for still having this video up! Saved me when I first got my used PS5 during the shortage. Saved me again when I had to clean out all the dust from use!
Yea stage 1 is as far as I'll clean it.
Making my PS5 ready for FFXVI 🔥😂
I recently bought a PS5. It's 2 weeks old. I play 1-2 hours on average on weekdays and about 5-6 hours on weekends. So far no issues and it looks clean too. But i bet i will have to refer to this video 6 months from now
I will only do the stage 1&2 because stage 3 is too scary because some screws have different size and Im nit an expert
Same
When you don’t have a ps5 but save this for when you get one.
lmao true
Be no point u would void your warranty if u open it up
@@devilsguardian14 no opening the panels does not void your warranty
@@wwss3330 he removed more then that
@Ww Ss 100% does if you remove the adhesive part covering the fan plug.
I’ve had my PS5 for 2 years. The fan was loud. I looked up this video and there was hardly any dust. Cleaned it out and it’s totally silent now thanks to this video. Thanks!
Are you holding your console on the carpet or wtf. I have mine for 2 years barely any dust on fan I always clean the spot where the consoles stands and keep it in a open space no issues no weird sounds.
@@mrX666-s9p I always have it sitting on top of a stand sitting up right just below my tv. I always thought it was a well ventilated area and my PS4 never got any dust build up. I’m still not sure why the ps5 had that

I never comment on videos because I get way to nervous, but I really had to comment on this one and say thank you for the tutorial. I cleaned mine out and changed the thermal paste (with just the right amounts ) and now it runs PERFECT. I also didn't have to ask my guy friends to help me either because they think just because I'm a girl I can't fix anything. So thank you so much!!!
Huge help, I fully went through stage 3 for my over a year old ps5. Risky but all good 👍. Though, those 41 screws some were unnaturally tight 2 hour task by hand the first time. Other then that running smooth.
Still going?
@Damnitgary yup. Long as im keeping the ps5 laying down(keeping the liquid metal from leaking around)but cleaning wise its solid. Bought a custom top to keep lent out of fan and much less cleaning issue after.
@@1000byakuya sweet! Did you replace the thermal paste ?
@Damnitgary nah, limit to how "comfortable" i feel lol the new casing really helped alot tho. Sonys case sucks.

good video. but, be careful with some of those compressed air cans. They shoot out moisture sometimes. Start by spraying away from the console then aim it at the area you want to clean
Yea don’t shake it, and don’t spray for too long.
6:55 how do you remove the black and white cabels? Mine seemed to be stuck. If there is a way so safely remove them then please tell
Just pull them up. They are not soldered on so they should just pull up. They should be easy to reconnect/disconnect.
Just make sure you know which colour goes where - I took a picture before and after so I remember.
Thanks again. Every year I come back to this video to do a thorough spring cleaning!

All this made me realize how much cleaning the PS5 really needs especially at the 3 year mark. I never had issues prior and I’ve cleaned it every month but it was just the surface. I never knew the heat sink needed cleaning and boy was it dusty. I ran into issues of the PS5 turning off by itself. Come to find out the PS5 is very sensitive to dust build in the heat sink and hence why. There was no other reason I haven’t dropped it or spilled anything on it. So this dust has become my enemy 😂 the first stage is no problem cleaning out the heat sink with compressed air is good. Now I’m thinking of getting one of those air fans that pull out heat for the back. I honestly don’t want to replace it and I know that may happen down the road but nobody wants to drop another $400-500. Warranty doesn’t cover us anymore at least for launch consoles so while it’s a bunch of cleaning I’d rather do that than not.
I my wife bought me an ifix it for my birthday it’s is amazing. Thank you for the videos and showing my wife the ifix it. I love it ❤
