The funny thing is , is that it happens sometimes. Sometimes the horizon forbidden west can be played for 8 hours and no shutoff happens. Its like its randomized software issues
Excuse me! I just bought this PS5 brand new from Walmart and I should not be have this issue… this why I have a warranty and paid for a warranty. Not doing this just getting another one… notifying Walmart for a new one. I don’t mean to sound upset but this should not be happening to me.

I heard PS5 games over clocks it more than PS4 games which is extremely ironic. EDIT: (08/17/2022) About a month after this post, I haven't had any problems playing. I bought a ifixit toolkit from Best Buy and took apart the PS5 as much as I could and dusted it as much as I could. I found some dust where the heatsink was(I believe it was the heatsink). But what I believe made the most difference was putting the pS5 Horizontally, laying it down. Everytime it overheated and turned off, the bottom(when it's standing up, vertically) was extremely hot. So when it's laying down, that bottom part has somewhere to breathe so to speak. Try laying the PS5 horizontally. Maybe it'll help you guys.

Maaan, mine just started doing this yesterday.. I’ve clean it three times but never far enough to get to the heat sink, usually just the fan. I might have to dig deeper.
My ps5 just shuts off randomly and the only way it turns on is to unplug it and plug it back in the fans are clean and everything but when I unplug the power cord I feel it’s really hot like burning hot I don’t know why it’s only on a select few games
What it seems like is a flawed design finally raising issues, ever since I bought my ps5(first Gen) they have said “stand it up, its no problem it's designed that way” which is Bs because what they don't tell you is that standing your console right side up for long periods (years in my case) block the bottom air vents which in turn trap hot air either way , no matter how many cleanings or fan fixes over time the constriction from this position will burn your fan out it may take some time but it’s inevitable based on the design . It seem for serious and continuous game play your ps5 should be placed laterally to prevent heat constriction . This problem started a few months bacc I turned my PlayStation sideways after a hard reset and haven’t had this problem since 💯so I am speaking from personal experience 💯

Reading a lot of the comments below this sounds like a software issue. Something is off as far as how the system translates the temp of the components and what speed the fan should blow to cool the system. I just started having this issue a few days ago. I broke down the whole console and cleaned it out. To my surprise it wasn't that dusty so this has to be a software issue. Hopefully it's not like a Stuxnet kind of thing. 😂😢👀

Overheating may need a cleaning. Worst part is its usually the power supply so a major teardown is required to acces the power supply. Sony also says to vaccum the exhausts where the hot air is blown out (the bottom and rear of the console) I find that risky since you may spin the fan and short something.
My PS5 says nothing about over heating.. but whenever I play PS5 version of a game, my PS5 hard crashes. I've tried a multitude of things to solve this problem.. Help?

Then I cleared the system cache when I did this I was playing with no issues after that, but in the morning I did a rebuild of the data base just to be sure, been playing like normal now hope this helps
Elden Ring is the only game to cause mine to shut off after an hour or so. Cleaned out the fan and then after 2 or 3 hours the issue came back. What would you suggest?

Even put in a 4k blu ray to test the sound as usually it'll get loud for the enitial boot up but still quiet so had faith. But then it shut off after 2 hours of elden ring, no warning. Not sure what the issue is

Having the same issue. It doesn't have any issues playing PS4 games or off the portable drive. But whenever I put a disc game, the fan blows loud and overheats within 2 minutes of it being on. My PS5 gets very little use. I haven't used it on in a month. So there's no reason for it to overheat. I opened the side panels and there's no dust!

So my PS5 is cutting off ONLY when I play NBA 2K23. Game is 160 gbs. I play division 2 more than any other game and it’s 110 GBs. My PS5 doesn’t put out the heat on any other game that it does when I play 2K23. I’ve layed it flat and it’s in an open area. I even had it outside on my patio but only 2K makes it shut off. I never get any overheated error message it just shuts off. I recorded it happening and sent it to song and 2K and was told to clear the cache or I can send it in for repairs.
It only turns off when you playing a game on the ps5 version instead of the ps4 version, it's like you can only play ps4 games cus if you play a ps5 version of a game after like 30min- 1 hour it will shutdown
Thanks man. I think that Sony knew that this was going to be an issue with PS5 Systems as more and more PS5 dropped. When they first released the system there weren't too many ps5 games. Mostly everyone was playing ps4 games.

If anybody's having trouble with the Bluetooth headset that uses a dongle, chances are it's blowing that hot ass air right onto the poor little dongle and it's getting too hot, you could grab an extension and it will work wonders

I've never opened and cleaned a console but I had zero issues doing it, I don't know if it's the same issue that I had cause I never got a warning just a shut off. It's dust in the psu area inside the ps5 that gets clogged I've cleaned it and my ps5 hasn't shut off again
I am new to your channel and followed all your recommendations as far as repair equipment (solder, soldering gun, camers, etc.) I am determined to fix this ps5. I was able to get mine powered on...magically. ran the safe mode reset. Started downloading games...and about 25-30 min in it shut off again. Making me think its an overheating issue. Fan works well. 12v Power from the supply checked on board. Now i am waiting for the camera and display so i can check all continuity points...so frustrating. And of course its out of warranty. Reminds me of the red ring of death...good times
Yea totally sucks cuz in my case I got mine overpriced on eBay brand-new but no warranty and I now have a PS5 that I have set up in front on my AC to cool it while I play and if God forbid it breaks totally, I cannot afford to buy another nowhere near 800 bucks.
I pretty sure it happens only when playing PS5 games, I have 2 ps5 and both turn off while play MW2 ps5 version so I downloaded the ps4 version of the game and it never turned off once I feel a cool breeze coming from the console up top when playing ps4 versions but feel heat when playing ps5 versions of games
Yeah it’s consistent happening to most people around same time, Sony needs to update it and increase fan speeds too, because atm it runs with only 18% of speeds while in game max of 22% when it’s hot, instead of just leaving it to the ps5 to decide.

what is common is dust it seems. I've never heard of the fan dying issue but of course anything mechanical is possible. in 2 years I've only had the issue once of shut down and it seems to be dust but I'll report back when I clean the heat sink out

This fucking sucks. I know it’s not the solution but what I do is whenever I play a game that will overheat the console I just take the plates off. That’ll allow me to at least play for 2 hours straight without any issues. However if you do this you have to clean it even more frequently to avoid any other problems. Can you believe that I turned on my ps5 and played a cinematic for 10 minutes and it gave me the notification about how hot the console was? It’s just fucking stupid, how could they get away with this??

They usually turn on as needed. Like when downloading games or launching big games or when temperatures call for it. A cold start usually won’t have your fans going

My console is 6 months old. It’s about 130* degrees internal temp when playing it for an extended period of time. Most of the clip on back fans are gimmicky. Only reduce cpu temp by 2* degrees. I need a real solution for 10 degree temperature difference or better. Help
i had this issue once then suddenly it disappeared. just recently today lol i was using my console and i decided to open it up and clean the fan a bit. no removing no nothing just clean wtever i could that’s around the ps5 then i plug it back in and i play for nearly two or three hours then it turned off on its own. i turned it back on and it turned off after an hour or so. its safe to say i have this same issue once again.

I think its both as during the recent heatwave in UK the ps5 has been saying the message and it hasn't before. But also while I cleaned the fans, the problem vanished
The console is literally unplayable without the AC on the lowest temperature in the room even in winter if you play without AC the console just turns off not worth buying this shit oh and i almost forgot there are no games
i tried setting it on side on top of ac vent to stay cool, still after 30 min stream it crashes. on ps5 game , some days i play for 16 hrs and no shutoff though, so disapointed
I’m pretty sure it’s not the fans sadly. I’ve bought 2 different versions, one under the console and one on the rear. None of them seem to work. It’s more likely a faulty piece not the whole body of the console.

There's nothing wrong with the PlayStation 5 people are not understanding that the PlayStation 5 has been all around and if you stand it up with event comes out with where the heat comes out at the bottom if you have it standing up and you have it in the stand it's going to overheat if you have a stand it up for the PlayStation 5 is not meant to be standing up

I have a fan for the bottom and it still overheats, its not the orientation but I'm glad it worked for you

Even put in a 4k blu ray to test the sound as usually it'll get loud for the enitial boot up but still quiet so had faith. But then it shut off after 2 hours of elden ring, no warning. Not sure what the issue is

Here are the steps I took and my ps5 doesn't shutoff anymore
1. I plugged my ps5 directly into the wall socket (Sony says to try this)
2. Then I cleared the system cache when I did this I was playing with no issues after that, but in the morning I did a rebuild of the data base just to be sure, been playing like normal now hope this helps

Having the same issue. It doesn't have any issues playing PS4 games or off the portable drive. But whenever I put a disc game, the fan blows loud and overheats within 2 minutes of it being on. My PS5 gets very little use. I haven't used it on in a month. So there's no reason for it to overheat. I opened the side panels and there's no dust!

So my PS5 is cutting off ONLY when I play NBA 2K23. Game is 160 gbs. I play division 2 more than any other game and it’s 110 GBs. My PS5 doesn’t put out the heat on any other game that it does when I play 2K23. I’ve layed it flat and it’s in an open area. I even had it outside on my patio but only 2K makes it shut off. I never get any overheated error message it just shuts off. I recorded it happening and sent it to song and 2K and was told to clear the cache or I can send it in for repairs.

If anybody's having trouble with the Bluetooth headset that uses a dongle, chances are it's blowing that hot ass air right onto the poor little dongle and it's getting too hot, you could grab an extension and it will work wonders

I just bought ps5 2 days back and when I'm playing ps5 game, an error pops up ( your ps5 is overheating, turn it off) i have checked there is no dust or anything i just got it 2 days back.. changed the setup too vertically to horizontally) nothing is working.. PS5 games are causing overheating error to pop up within 5 mins of gameplay.. + my PS5 doesn't appear to be warm when i touch it when the error pops up yet it's turning my ps5 automatically... it's working fine with ps4 games.. i played horizon zero dawn for an hour, no error observed but as soon as I switched to COD or astro playroom, within 5 mins it says overheating and it turns off automatically. I've never opened and cleaned a console but I had zero issues doing it, I don't know if it's the same issue that I had cause I never got a warning just a shut off. It's dust in the psu area inside the ps5 that gets clogged I've cleaned it and my ps5 hasn't shut off again
I am new to your channel and followed all your recommendations as far as repair equipment (solder, soldering gun, camers, etc.) I am determined to fix this ps5. I was able to get mine powered on...magically. ran the safe mode reset. Started downloading games...and about 25-30 min in it shut off again. Making me think its an overheating issue. Fan works well. 12v Power from the supply checked on board. Now i am waiting for the camera and display so i can check all continuity points...so frustrating. And of course its out of warranty. Reminds me of the red ring of death...good times
Yea totally sucks cuz in my case I got mine overpriced on eBay brand-new but no warranty and I now have a PS5 that I have set up in front on my AC to cool it while I play and if God forbid it breaks totally, I cannot afford to buy another nowhere near 800 bucks.

I pretty sure it happens only when playing PS5 games, I have 2 ps5 and both turn off while play MW2 ps5 version so I downloaded the ps4 version of the game and it never turned off once I feel a cool breeze coming from the console up top when playing ps4 versions but feel heat when playing ps5 versions of games

Yeah it’s consistent happening to most people around same time, Sony needs to update it and increase fan speeds too, because atm it runs with only 18% of speeds while in game max of 22% when it’s hot, instead of just leaving it to the ps5 to decide.

what is common is dust it seems. I've never heard of the fan dying issue but of course anything mechanical is possible. in 2 years I've only had the issue once of shut down and it seems to be dust but I'll report back when I clean the heat sink out

This fucking sucks. I know it’s not the solution but what I do is whenever I play a game that will overheat the console I just take the plates off. That’ll allow me to at least play for 2 hours straight without any issues. However if you do this you have to clean it even more frequently to avoid any other problems.

They usually turn on as needed. Like when downloading games or launching big games or when temperatures call for it. A cold start usually won’t have your fans going

Question I recently did a mod on my ps5 where i cut open the inner shell to see heat sink and fans work I replaced the outer shell with see through shell but not my games randomly shuts off do you think it’s because of the fans air not being able to travel down to the heatsink

My console is 6 months old. It’s about 130* degrees internal temp when playing it for an extended period of time. Most of the clip on back fans are gimmicky. Only reduce cpu temp by 2* degrees. I need a real solution for 10 degree temperature difference or better. Help

i had this issue once then suddenly it disappeared. just recently today lol i was using my console and i decided to open it up and clean the fan a bit. no removing no nothing just clean wtever i could that’s around the ps5 then i plug it back in and i play for nearly two or three hours then it turned off on its own. i turned it back on and it turned off after an hour or so. its safe to say i have this same issue once again.

I’m pretty sure it’s not the fans sadly. I’ve bought 2 different versions, one under the console and one on the rear. None of them seem to work. It’s more likely a faulty piece not the whole body of the console.
