    Just got the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" for design sketching. I absolutely love it, the area is exactly the space on a 11x9 marker pad that I actually sketch in, and the screen pixel area and ratio is almost exactly 17x11 at 150dpi. A screen resolution and ratio canvas translates to a 17x11 layout nicely. Zoom in and sketch one image in the space the screen provides, then scale and arrange the layer image into the 17x11 layout. This makes adapting from use of small and medium marker pads and copic pens easy. The device is about the size and weight of a 8.5x5.5" sketch pad (which is always 1-2" larger, 10x5.5" with the spiral binding and tear off stub attached to the binding).
    I am short and have a bad back so the reach to use actual large format analog paper is not possible for me to do all day, with this light device I can do medium large format work without reaching one arm out and asymmetrically levering my L4-L5 spinal disk out of place (from reaching out with my right hand and causing lateral pressure on my lower spin for 45 years without enough symmetrical alignment compensation).
    beware asymmetrical repetitive motions, seriously. Compensate with stretching, doing everything else but drawing with the opposite hand regularly, non dexterous tasks work best, you dont need fine hand control you need tension on your core to be symmetrical, carrying groceries always in the off hand has helped me align from time to time. Artists suffer asymmetrical tension injuries, just a heads up from the ergonomics department.

    Excellent review: exactly the sort of aspects I wanted covering.
    It's definitely a valid point that one year from now, the iPad Pro will be much better supported (and quite possibly accompanied by refreshed hardware, support for other size iPads etc.), but it's also important to remember that the Surface Pro will itself be on its fifth version by then, and seeing how far it has come in just four iterations, I've got my fingers crossed for a comparable improvement.
    Microsoft have a fundamentally different approach to tablets, that of full desktop on a tablet: it's still somewhat clunky, but they're getting there remarkably fast, whereas Apple seem to be sticking with the IOS/OSX divide: it is extremely unlikely that they're going to be merging them any time soon, and even if they did, as Microsoft's example shows, it's not that easy.
    As an illustrator moving into experimenting with animating my stuff, Microsoft's approach has the advantage that I can use the same (fairly pricey) tablet knowing that I can use all my solid, proven, 2d software (Photoshop, Illustrator, Manga Studio), with 3d software (Anime Studio Pro, Poser etc.) right now, and surprisingly seamlessly, especially given the fact that MS has a full file system.
    I went to look at an iPad Pro and instantly fell in love with it: it is a wonderful bit of kit. But for any sort of "serious" artwork, sadly I can't help feeling that they've got a mountain to climb.

      +Joe Hodgson Well said.
      To be honest, I don't even quite understand why people are so eager to compare devices like Surface 4 or Companion 2 against Ipad Pro. Fundamentally the latter mentioned is a whole different breed. SP4 and Companion 2 are real full computers with big boy OS, which opens up a lot more possibilities. I'm not saying, that Ipad Pro isn't a wonderful device, but it really is a "bit" different breed. And of course, in the end of the day all that matters is: what are one's needs? You should always get the device, that covers YOUR needs.

    Thank you for your review. I do not have any issues with Ipad Pro and the pencil, both play together smoothly, I'm very happy with them. I'm using the 12.9/256g and Procreate 3.1 ,regarding the surface glass against plastic not a big deal, just get used to it, it's just like drawing on a surface for charcoal pencil against drawing on surface for a marker...of course it feels a lot different but i still can draw without an issue. I'm just amazed of the precise response of the apple pencil, for me ...the best.

    I'm pretty surprised you didn't give more time to Procreate and all it can do. From creating custom brushes and palettes, to insane amounts of layers with the iPad pro, to exporting a decent variety of files (psd) included, to auto recording your drawing/painting process. I realize some of this is newer with the program in updates, but it really feels like a mobile Photoshop in a lot of ways now. There's so much more to it than when I bought it for my iPad Air.

    Great review! I agree with a lot of your points. I really wanted to like the iPad Pro more than I actually did.
    I love OS X, and have been using both an iPhone and a MacBook Pro as my daily drivers for the past eight years. I loved the iPad Air 2, and still maintain that is the best tablet you can buy if you want a tablet for casual use. It's form factor, great AppStore and (still) impressive power, make it a great tablet for games, reading, browsing, watching video's and many other things.
    I expected to love the iPad Pro too. I didn't. At all. It was too big, iOS looked weird on a 13" screen, and it didn't feel any faster or more powerful than the iPad Air 2. I returned it within a week and got a Surface Pro 4. I absolutely LOVE that. The difference between 12.3" and 12.9" might not seem that significant on paper, but it feels a lot more compact. Not to mention the excellent stand, the MicroSD slot, the INCLUDED pen, and the very good Type Cover. The i7 model with Intel 540 graphics also pack quite a surprising gaming punch, negating the iPad Pro's advantage in games. It's absolutely perfect for reading comic books and magazines, watching movies, and Photoshop and Manga Studio are better software than whatever app there is on the iPad Pro.
    A friend of mine got a used 128GB i5 Surface Pro 3 with Type Cover AND an iPad Air 2 64GB for pretty much the same price as a 128GB iPad Pro with Apple Pencil would have cost him. There is NOTHING in the iPad Pro that justifies such a ridiculous price. Everything related to casual tablet use, the iPad Air 2 does better. Everything related to serious productivity, the Surface Pro 4 (or even the Surface Pro 3) does better. Right now, there is a sale in my country, netting you a 128 m3 Surface for 160 euro's LESS than the 32GB iPad Pro. Even if you splurge on the Type Cover, it would still cost you less than Apple's big tablet. I can't think of anyone I'd recommend the iPad Pro to. And I recommend the iPad Air 2 to almost everyone in the market for a tablet.

    This review can not be more dead on. I went from drawing on an iPad air with an adonit jot pro to a surface pro 4 using clip studio. One thing that drove me nuts was pulling work from my iPad to my desktop to finish for the exact reason it felt disjointed going from procreate on the ipad to something like Photoshop on windows. Also I really like window 10 on surface and my desktop so i can seamlessly transfer files via onedrive. Now if i could only afford a wacom cintiq companion 2 I wouldn't need the surface lol. Thanks for the review cause i was thinking of getting a ipad pro and apple pencil to go back to apple because of these people that claim it feels like drawing on paper. THANKS!

    Alright review, definitely loved your Procreate review. For the iPad Pro Artist/Animator I-Wei Huang did a great thorough review of some unique features to the Pro versus the Surface Pro 4 and Wacom Cintiq Companion such as the tilt sensitivity in the Pencil and no Parallax, a few extra features an Artist could find very useful. I'd say some serious Illustrators or Designers should also check out his review too given the depth of comparison and features.

      TGill Chemistry I've had two iPad pros now. 10" and 12.9". It's ok for light duty stuff but I still don't like the Apple Pencil much, not for the price. It's still has all the same issues. Hopefully the next model improves things.

    • @Visual-Synthesizer
      @Visual-Synthesizer 7 лет назад

      depends on what type of art you do and software you need. the surface pro is more powerful because you can run any software you need. but its less refined because of the software is not created for a mobile touch interface. iOS is very simple and easier to use, but lacks powerful features some artists want and need. if you are just drawing and painting, i would say just get the ipad pro. it does that better. but you do graphic design, 3d modelling or super HD paintings get a windows tablet. there are allot of tablets and 2 in 1 computers with Wacom AES pens so your not limited to the surface line either.

    • @Visual-Synthesizer
      @Visual-Synthesizer 7 лет назад

      the pens on both work good enough. i would focus on what apps you need and hardware limits before i worry about stylus types.

    I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to the workflow. I drew on an iPad with various blutooth styli(many styluses) It was the WORST drawing experiance in my life!
    I have drawn on the iPad, Galaxy Note 8.0/5, Surface Pro 3, Cintiq Companion Hybrid(my current drawing tablet) and just recently an iPad Pro, the Cintiq remains the best experiance for me.
    the iPad pro to me has the following problems, as you mention pressure curve: it's too sensitive or not sensitive enough. I could not see myself Inking on the iPad pro, sketching yes, but Inking NO. I'm not going to drop $1100 on a sketching device, and no cursor.
    My recomendation, stick to what you like

    I've got to say that at first I was thinking that you completely missed the mark when you did not bring up some of the apps that are particularly good at customizing your brushes (Procreate and Sketch Club being two big ones). You did eventually mention them, so I changed my "unlike" to "like" but I still think more attention would have helped me more if you'd spent more time with those customized brushes. As you said, who really cares whether Paper works well with the pencil. Those are not the drawing apps you are looking for ... pressure sensitivity AND tilt are both important to me (does the surface do tilt?). It's easy to predict that in future iPad Pro versions, we will get bearing and rotation. Apart from that, I have gotten to Pro and would say that all your other points are spot on, to the point where I too am considering whether to keep the Air 2 for things other than drawing. I still use it a lot and pack it whenever I go anywhere ..

      +TheMonsterPenguin Thanks for review, my question is the same as The Monster Penguin's. I Iike to digitally paint, Painter and Manga Studio, but I'm not mobile especially so I just want the best stylus experience. I have a Surface Pro 2 (with Wacom pen) but unsure about N-trig SP4. I also like the larger screen size of the iPad Pro, but I don't have a mac so I'd need to get one to use astropad. Heard some iffy things about SP4 pen (as in your review: lag in Photoshop,weird ends to strokes etc.). I've tried Apple pencil in a shop and it felt really good, but that is on native apps, so I've really interested in whether you prefer using iPad Pro + Astropad, rather than SP3/4? Thanks for the videos, entertaining and informative, really great stuff. Mark

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  9 лет назад +10

      +mark pexton i would say the pencil is a bit more responsive than the sp4 pen. There was no lag at all in the apps I used. Astropad is a bit slower than a native app, but not by much. Also I thought that the Sp4 pen was still really good. Both are very nice.

    Thanks for your review ! I was waiting for it ! :)
    One of my friends tried drawing on the iPad Pro of his brother, and made the same statement than you about the stylus and the absence of resistance from the tip or the glass.
    I let him try my Surface Pro 3 with the Surface Pro 4 stylus and it's B tip and just like you (and me) he loved the feeling of resistance we have with it. The fact that we can "feel" the pressure. He found it more precise too.
    And he agreed about the fact that the Surface Pro as a full laptop can be a better investment than the iPad Pro.
    I'd like to try the iPad Pro + Pencil myself but there isn't any pencil available for testing at the reseller in my Town. :(
    But that's what I expected from the design of the pencil, it looks a lot like the pencil from Dell Venue Pro products. And I hated the lack of resistance and the hardness of the tip (but the one of the Pencil looks a little softer).

  • @fenjen
    @fenjen 9 лет назад

    I noticed that the "tooth" people were talking about really only is noticeable when the iPad pro screen is really, really clean. Once it has some fingerprints on it the pencil feels a lot more slick all of a sudden. Not that that makes it better or anything, but it might explain the difference in experience.

    Remove rubber comfort grips from pens at home and slide on bottom of ipencil gives more grip and comfort and keeps ipencil from rolling off flat surfaces. Use magnets found on inside of iPad covers to attract metal ring on ipencil for temporary holding of ipencil.

    Nice to see someone able to put their love of a company aside and be upfront about a product good and bad.
    My .02, Apple abandoned us artists for the ipod/ipad cash cow when the only reason their company was still in business at the time is because creatives stuck with them during the lean times. So I'm VERY hesitant ever give them my money again.
    BUT, when these popped up on my wireless carrier for just an extra 36 bucks a month I did a double take. But after looking through reviews, as good overall as they are, for the money it just makes more sense to buy a much more capable Surface Pro for just a little more.
    OR "if" your giving up real hardware/software for a tablet like this the 10.1 and 12.2 Galaxy note tablets are MUCH cheaper... and great as digital sketchbooks.

    Great review! I'm actually deciding right now, if i should go for a cintiq 13HD or an iPad pro.
    I'm a huge fan of the iOS software but since my concerns of the actual lack of drawing apps was right, i think for me the cintiq is just the better option.
    It allows me to use any kind of drawing software i got used to over the years and not making me struggle to find or learn a new one.
    Thank you for this video :)

    * * * * * to this valuable review
    I am into designing Rugs and i use Cintiq 24Hd but i wanted to buy iPad pro for one reason that i could use it anywhere.
    I was ready to buy it and use with the help of ASTROPAD but your video from 8:36 explains it all AND YOU ARE 100% right.
    Yes i will wait for smarter iPad pro till they come up with something which will atleast support full adobe photoshop and bunch because i love Apple hardware and OS as its truly flawless.But right now as you say "YEAR FROM NOW ;-] "
    Thanks again from INDIA

    i think im with you on this too man. the ipad pro is too expensive imo, i'm hoping the technology trickles down to the ipad air or even ipad mini (which i use now with astropad and really love). Just a note, Astropad also works via the USB port, and reduces a lot (but not all) of the lag - i've no idea why you'd use it over wifi if you're close to the mac.

      I think the idea of using it while on the couch is (sort of) a reason to use it on wifi.

    Hi! do you know if duet display would preserve pressure sensitivity? Did you try it? If I understand well astropad is more a mirroring app, while duet makes the ipad work as a 2nd display, which I think is better. Also, Duet works on PC as well. I don't even know if the app works well enough in terms of latency, but maybe you tryed it (?).

    I think the toothy (?) statement is from those who use a matte screen protector and that may be why they said that? I'm not sure. I highly doubt it actually feels like paper but it probably feels... real-er than with the smooth screen of an iPad.

    • @alexw4643
      @alexw4643 8 лет назад

      Also I was wondering, you said that it'll probably be great about a year from now. Well, at this point in time it's been almost a year since this was made. So, assuming you still use it regularly, has it gotten better? I've recently become very intrigued with the combo since I'm so desperate to do digital art (I find it very fun compared to traditional art when I get the chance but I've only been able to do it a few times) and so far it seems worth the (big) amount of money for what it can do. Is it worth it?

    I can certainly understand your standpoint in the review. Personally, I think the issues that you listed are all common with version 1.0 of new apple products. They are the same issues that existed with the original iPad, but were soon remedied as developers hopped on board. I would recommend Procreate to just about anyone. If they came out with something like 'procreate pro' with a few more options and features for a bit more, I'd be down for that.
    The iPads that those other reviewers used could have had a special coating that isn't on the production line iPad pro for some reason. For instance, it could wear off or add too much to manufacturing cost or time. Apple should offer a matte option with the iPad pro 2 (they'll probably do that anyway).
    What do you think about developers making optimized software that's almost exclusively for the iPad pro itself? You mentioned adding fonts. What if apple added a font book like feature to a future version of iOS?

    In my opinion, I'd say that Wacom tablets like the companion do more of what I need. I'd use the iPad if I was just drawing or sketching a comic or something like that, but I like that I can use high end programs like Premiere and Flash and Photoshop. I need to be able to sketch out a concept in Photoshop, animate it in Flash, then edit the animation together in Premiere. I wish an iPad was powerful enough to do all that but it just isn't right now. I would say that if you are looking for something just to draw on, get the iPad pro and procreate it has everything you need and its cheaper but if need something for more than just drawing then I'd go with a Wacom tablet. Either way, awesome review and you have some really a great work

    Hi Brad, these are some really good reviews you are doing, and you're really fun to listen to.
    I'm an Apple fanboy, but even Adobe can't save the iPad Pro.
    At least, I don't see how. If they bent all their efforts to producing equivalent versions of Illustrator and Photoshop for iOS, it might be possible to save the Pro. But I really doubt that iOS is capable of supporting such complex applications, and it will be years before anything that matches those applications could be seen from Adobe or anyone else. The workflow that Apple and Adobe have visualized, that is, sketching on the Pro and finishing on a desktop/laptop computer, is a bit tiresome, but might have worked - if only Microsoft hadn't already made a better alternative.
    Tim Cook was quoted as saying that the Surface Book is "diluted" - a product that tries to be both a laptop and tablet, and fails to be either.
    Well Tim, I want a 13 inch Apple iPad "diluted" with OS X.

    Do somebody think iPad Pro 9.7 inch is a good choice for an artist? I'm planning to buy an iPad Pro and I like the 9.7 inch as it is perfect for media consumption and portability, but my main goal is having it for drawing, so could I handle with a 9.7 inch display or should i go straight to the 12.9 inch model?

    The pro glass is visibly different to the iPad Air if you look at reflected sun light when switched off the pro looks grey where the air is jet black... I think when people are talking about the feel of pencil on paper I thought they were referring to the natural feel of using a pencil instead of the deliberate way some styluses need just to work

    Thanks for your comments. I draw cartoons also and I'm looking for a way to go completely digital. I'd stick with paper and ink but it's the scanning that gets me. Still, scanning half the image at a time and piecing it together in Photoshop does seem a lot more simple than moving the project from tablet to desktop to one app to another just to create the image. Can you share your experience with that?

    I kind of wish I understand what you are talking about when you say there is a learning curve to windows. Because when I was younger my school used Mac's and I soon got my own windows laptop, and I don't remember having a lot trouble with it, and when I started use software's like flash it was pretty easy, and soon ctrl Z became my best friend.

    Pressure sensitivity varies from program to program on Windows too. I'd like to see a really good art comparison between the iPad Pro and the Note Pro 12. For sure, the iPad has better performance, and probably better apps. But Android with Samsung's tweaks is better for workflow than iOS.
    Lately, I've been thinking about the Surface Book. I'm not a fan of Windows at all, and Windows 10/Surface stuff is riddled with bugs right now, but the Surface Book is still intriguing.

    Would you recommend an iPad pro for a non-professional artist who draws for fun? I would also use it for note-taking in college. Or instead of an iPad pro (and pencil) should I just get an iPad air + Bluetooth Stylus? Is the Air big enough? Or is it work the extra money and decreased portability to get the iPad pro? Thanks so much :)

    As an artist I am considering the iPad....loved your review on Procreate and concepts...they definitely feel like the kind of apps I would use...but...the pro iPad is a bit out of the budget for me. so while I love how the pencil seems to work....as we know it only is available for iPad pro. have you tried other stylus? really looking for an artist's point of view. I am considering the iPad air 2...so an excellent stylus to pair with that would be great.

    I just want to draw, save my drawings localy, and then connect my drawing device (physicaly) to my laptop (a PC), to transfer the files and finish / animate them on desktop applications. So, from what you say (from 5:07 to 5:24), can I infer that this is not possible on the iPad Pro??? (Correct me if I'm wrong, please)... If so, I'm gonna try other rig than Apple (I'm considering using the 9.7" Galaxy Tab S3 for drawing, because of the ease of file-transfering)... Not mentioning that the S3 already comes with a S-pen with 4096 levels of pressure.that has some pretty reviews...

    I would absolutely love to have the ipad pro for sketching but iOS simply doesn't have a response for zbrush. If Pixelogic announced a feature-full version of Zbrush for iOS with adobe-like workflow options to send it directly to the desktop then I would be ordering the ipad pro right now.
    I think for the time being I'm going to be going with the SP4 and dealing with the fact that my device won't be as great for sketching.

    I think it's possible that a lot of the accolades in early reviews came from Apple fans who are amazed no matter what Apple does, and also from a tech press who aren't artists...and, let's face face it, are often biased towards Apple these days. That's not to say that the iPad Pro & Apple Pencil aren't good, but, like you, I wasn't feeling the same thing I saw the other reviewers go on about. And I think it's unfortunate that you have tech press talking so much about the Apple Pencil, but there wasn't the same praise for the Surface. But to be fair the iPad Pro, perhaps the ease of finding good apps is more encouraging to the non-artist than what is available on Surface. This is something Microsoft really needs to work on.

    I had the surface pro 3 and absolutely hated drawing on it. It was always hot where I guess the battery is(or maybe cpu?) and the screen always got uncomfortably warm. The surface pen was nowhere near as accurate and always jittered. The tip was no better and still felt like drawing on glass. Got a much better experience with the ipad pro and then a matte protector was even better. The pencil is so much better than the surface's crappy pen

      seems a little unfair to compare the ipad pro to a device that came out over two years ago. The surface pro 4 pen is way better than the sp3 pen, and the battery doesn't have the heating issue.

    With the price of the pro in India, one can buy a motor cycle here. What about there? (I don't know whether you are from US or UK)?

      I like the extra drawing space that the 12.9 gives me. The down side Is I don't read on it as much as my older smaller iPad because it's kinda big for that. I have the 32gb and it's plenty for me, but I'm not taking photos or videos with it and I don't have any music or movies on it either so space hasn't been an issue for me.
