One thing to keep in mind, Procreate developers have already announced that they are removing pressure sensitivity support for non-Apple Pencil styluses. So the the other brands won’t be able to be used to full potential very soon.
If you are an artist, there is no replacement for an Apple Pencil. I have an Apple Pencil one I bought in 2017 along with my 12.9 iPad Pro and they both work perfectly to this day, although I am kind of ready to buy a new iPad with an updated pencil. I have dropped my pencil several times but it still works perfectly and holds its charge well. I used Wacom tablets for several years and hundreds of dollars! They can’t hold a candle to the Apple Pencil! So for me the Apple Pencil is cheap by comparison. I’m not saying other Styluses don’t work because they do but they just don’t do everything most Artists would need (most importantly Pressure Sensitivity). However, I do also have alternative styluses such as the mesh one and it works perfectly fine (when I’m NOT doing calligraphy, sketching or detailed artwork). So, if you’re looking for something like that, this video is very helpful. Thank you for your informative video!
@@expiredmilk763 I understand this because l once used my finger, homade styluses and styluses l bought. Once you start with the Apple Pencil however it’s a game changer
Great review! For me, the largest drawback of the Apple Pencil is that I can never seem to get a secure grip on it. I’ve tried a couple of sleeves, but got my best results with masking tape.
Fun fact, you can get grip-tape (the stuff usually used for raquettes etc) and use it with the pencil, it makes it alot more comfortable and is super sleek
For the price they charge for the damn thing, you'd think they would actually make it more tactile to hold, look cool or something- but no. It's a mass produced made in China product, and you need to ADD to it to make it more usable.
I have the KXT and for what I need it for, I would say it’s really good! As said in the video, it’s accurate and smooth, but there are a few things to consider. One is that for me, I keep accidentally clicking on the power button and switching it off. I might just be clumsy but it’s quite annoying. The battery life is excellent, it lasts a long time and I don’t feel like I have to constantly charge it. The final thing for me personally, is since the tip isn’t the absolute finest, it’s sometimes not as accurate as it could be. It is still accurate, but if you’re an artist I honestly think you’d be better off with an Apple Pencil. I am in no way an artist, but I do like to do sketches and research using it, mainly for fun. I think this review was really good and helpful, but this is my opinion on the KXT.
This will definitely help people make a more informed decision if funds are low. I’m personally very happy with the Apple Pencil 2, it offers so much more to me pairing with my iPad Pro magnetically charging as you said, and the features it affords me like pressure, drawing with angles it’s just perfect. If you can afford an ipad, then I’d definitely suggest going with apples own proprietary pencils for ease of use.
I got a stylus for about 50-60$, worked perfectly. Dropped it in a parking lot and it got ran over by a truck/car. Found it squashed but still working. My iPad literally broke before it did.
This is perfect!! I’m looking for an alternative for my daughter! She’s almost 6 (in April), loves drawing, and is very good at it, so I want her to have a stylus to use on her iPad. Oh, I didn’t hear it mentioned, but is scratching the screen ever a concern? She’s not particularly heavy-handed, but anything is possible. 😅
Not so much scratching the screen, as the nibs are plastic and the screen is harder. I’d stay away from the penyeah as that would scratch if she uses the normal pen.

I’m a beginner using Procreate to learn how to draw. I have one of the £20 stylus’s and the only problem I have is that a lot of the tutorials out there are of course done with an IPencil. Because of that fact some of them can’t be followed closely, even the beginner ones as a lot use the fact that the IPencil tapers or they use a lighter or heavier pressure. Now for beginners I guess we shouldn’t worry about that but I find it stresses me out as I have to keep stopping the tutorial to alter the width or opacity of the line. Is there an alternative between a compatible stylus at around £20 and the IPencil at £100+ that has a version of the pressure sensitivity?

I got my Apple Pencil gen 2 for $55 and the gen 1 for $50. On fb marketplace. Both were brand new basically with the box and everything. I only thing I had to get extra was the lightning adapter for the gen 1.
I just sold my 11" iPad Pro from 2019 looking forward to replace it with a newer one. Alas, I sold it to another artist so I had to include the Apple Pencil 2 in the sale as well (didn't want to but oh well). The Apple Pencil is the best stylus I've ever used after lots of experience with Wacom and other brand tablets and to see the cheap knockoffs not really getting to the precision and grace level of the original Pencil, well... guess my best bet will be to hope for a renewed version on Amazon if I don't want to pay full price for a new Pencil.
I got myself a Crayon for about 24 dollars in an authorized Apple Store. The price was SO CHEAP I couldn't even believe it myself. Best purchase I could have done, considering I at least got a pencil from a reputated brand :)
Hi James I just make comments on photographs but mainly engineering first draft drawings I also have purchased 3 apple pencils just failed due to what I would say through light damage though a lot of American travel plus making references in NOTES which would you recommend cheers BRIAN
Should have mentioned kingone stylus also. I use this one very similar to waffle Pencil 2 with magnetic charging & pairing e very cheap & durable to original product
The laser stylus looks like a cheap knockoff of the one I have. Mine magnetically attaches and charges, and pressing the power button once goes to home while twice goes to the app switcher. It has tilt, palm rejection, etc. for $20. The ONLY thing it doesn’t have is smooth pairing (though it works after you just turn it on!) and, of course, pressure sensitivity. It’s the best value stylus I’ve ever seen especially looking at this video.
I have a laser stylus :D it... gets the job done. Calibrating it is actually hell and i lost the cap thing within a week but its got a good battery life (i charge mine not even once a month) its good for casual artists who draw in their free time. Not expensive, good feel, good battery life and thats about it idk. If you move the pen fast enough with a stroke you can get a fake sort of pressure sensitivity effect either way im just trying to repp this pen
I bought the IPenbox from Amazon for $29 shipping and handling and it has palm rejection, charges on the iPad, came with extra points, and it comes in different colors. I chose yellow to help me keep track of it. My Apple Pencil died after not being used regularly and that PO’ed me… how can that be fair?
My 1st gen pencil just got broken a few days ago so I'm looking for an alternative compatible with Ipad pro 9.7 inch. Can someone tell me what's the best to buy pls? thanks a lot
I would suggest that if you have the option to buy an Apple original product, you should go for it. Most people who use Apple products are quite discerning, and some even have a bit of OCD. The price and quality are directly proportional, and once you discover something that isn't quite up to par with Apple's original product, you'll become hyper-aware of the issue and it will be magnified infinitely. You may even curse every time you use it... So, it's best to buy the original Apple product. Although it may be more expensive, Apple's quality is second to none.🤣😂
Hey James! My KXT pencil only works while it’s on charge, it’s been on charge for 2 days but when I took it off the charger the light isn’t coming. However when I charge it and turn it on it works? Any suggestions?
If any of y’all have an Apple product that needs to be fixed, do not go to Apple because the only thing they know how to do is build their stuff, not fix it. I’ve seen many videos of Apple, just saying no and then another person from another store said they can fix it even though Apple said they couldn’t so do not go to Apple. If you have an Apple product that’s broken don’t cause it’s not worth your time. And the thing is I’m a 14-year-old saying that if any of y’all like to know my age that’s me but yeah I just don’t. I’m stating facts here y’all please don’t come after me. 😢
I am a Student and I need an apple pen for my school but I think the real one is too expensive so I need one that is like yknow fake or cheap one that have palm regestion and have flat edge that can stick to the iPad and I don’t need it to draw I just need it to write some work so I don’t need some Apple Pencil that is gonna be able to change the tips or something
12:48 i have this one and i LOVE it. My least favorite part is on my new ipad. It does NOT connect to the part of the place meant for the apple pencil. Edit: except mine is white and looks nothing like that one. I have the twist off ones for replacement and needs a bluetooth pairing and the pairing is called *pencil* edit i lost it and can’t find it…
It also pairs and charges via the magnet, but essentially yes. For most artists pressure sensitivity is highly important though, for me it’s worth every extra dollar for that feature I use daily.
I bought the clone Pencil. The only difference thatI have noted is the battery widget on my iPad 10 will not show the charge percentage of my clone Pencil. I will buy an Apple Pencil when funds permit. I did buy a clone magnetic charger for my Pencil and it works fine.
This video was exactly what I was looking for, thank you. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this: I'm looking for a stylus for my daughter's iPad... she is going on 8 years old and is interested in video editing and just being creative with digital media. We've gone through a couple of cheaper pens (around $10 USD, no name brand worth mentioning...) that broke very easily when dropped. I was wondering which of these would hold up to a kid's usage at a budget price... is the Penyear fairly durable, for example, because the price is right and seems to offer lots of utility, but if it breaks upon first drop, it's kind of useless.
If I were you, I would use the Apple Pencil is not the other pencils because it’s super smooth at the inside and the outside it’s kind of like you’re holding a real pencil
I have one that actually charges just like the Apple Pencil 2 - I wish you had tried one of those bc I’m curious to hear what you might think of it. It was only around $32 usd.
I throw the package of my pencil in the trash so i really don’t remember what was it but its none of these that were in the video, however it just doesn’t write when i put my hand on the ipad while holding it,it starts glitching and deleting what im trying to write,it basically only writes when no skin touches the screen,im a highschool student and i really need a nice one to only write notes with at least, what do u suggest me to get??
thank you James, I had no idea there were backup products ,as mentioned I'm new to ipad digital and procreate. Question? When I purchased the ipad I use, ipad pro 12.9 the apple store said it would only work with the apple pencil 2. Considering the cost I'm a little paranoid about losing it. Will any of these products work with the ipad pro, besides the apple 2 pencil? Thank you in advance. Excellent comparison video.
The top piece is not for if the battery dies, cmon man. It’s for the functions your pen can’t perform like swiping home and accessing the control center.
@@JamesJulier-Artist Because I have a pen in that hand and I’m holding the IPad in the other. It’s more natural to flip it like to erase than it is to readjust so I can use my finger.
I disagree personally i constantly use a combination of pencil and fingers on screen. Pinch to zoom, rotate, two finger erase, three finger swipe for copy and paste and more gestures are in constant use with fingers on the same hand that holds the stylus in apps like procreate. So flipping the stylus around for me would probably be less convenient 🤷♂️

I think 1st gen air users like us need to finally move on, even as I’m writing this my keyboard is lagging a lot
@@AlvinaMuneer hi, I have iPad Air 2nd generation, any recommendations? Do you know if any of these stylus from the video such us the sanfant stylus are useful? I really only need it for taking notes for college so the only thing I’d need is palm rejection and decent precission. Thanks
@@javito5rgv487 please. Did you find any informations regarding Sanfont pencil or any alternative of apple pencil 1 that support scrible and palm rejection?
I have the quadence one. And the tiny thing in the back, I always sometimes lose it
What app are you using for the drawing demo?
My exact question
Did I only watch this to see the KXT review yes yes I did and I’m so glad I did I think it must just be the drawing apps I’ve used since it does sometimes lag for me and there is no tilt
I have the Quadrants one and it works great!
I use a Logitech crayon and is an excellent alternative to Apple Pencil. This pencil work great.
Good to know!
For anybody considering buying an Apple Pencil or other cheaper pencils , I would highly recommend buying the original Apple Pencil, it’s way better
But if ur looking for a cheaper price. There really isn't much difference
I got my Apple Pencil gen 2 for $55 and the gen 1 for $50. On fb marketplace. Both were brand new basically with the box and everything. I only thing I had to get extra was the lightning adapter for the gen 1.
Thanks a lot. This was very helpful.
Best purchase I could have done, considering I at least got a pencil from a reputated brand :)
i use the logitech crayon and tbh i love it.
I purchased a compatible one for my iPod it works like a charm and cost $21.99 my friend recently got it for $14.99.
My Apple Pencil died after not being used regularly and that PO’ed me… how can that be fair?
ir's not
My 1st gen pencil just got broken a few days ago so I'm looking for an alternative compatible with Ipad pro 9.7 inch.
Can someone tell me what's the best to buy pls? thanks a lot
The meta pen is also a good alternitave, no Bluetooth connection, i got one for my bday
Non of the cheaper works with CAD programs like shapr 3d.
Bad battery?
I used to make homemade ones the ones with the ear tips
Brother , Tell me the best Stylus for iPad 4 with 0% Delay ! I am an artist you know !
12:48 i have this one and i LOVE it. My least favorite part is on my new ipad. It does NOT connect to the part of the place meant for the apple pencil. Edit: except mine is white and looks nothing like that one. I have the twist off ones for replacement and needs a bluetooth pairing and the pairing is called *pencil*
edit
i lost it and can’t find it…
thanks a lot for your great effort by showing us all practically
wait what u can use what generation apple pencil on anyipad?
I’m an artist in training lol and I’m getting an Apple Pencil 2 😀
So, just pressure sensitivity adds 120 dollars?
It also pairs and charges via the magnet, but essentially yes. For most artists pressure sensitivity is highly important though, for me it’s worth every extra dollar for that feature I use daily.
I bought the clone Pencil. The only difference thatI have noted is the battery widget on my iPad 10 will not show the charge percentage of my clone Pencil. I will buy an Apple Pencil when funds permit. I did buy a clone magnetic charger for my Pencil and it works fine.
I do believe procreate is going to stop supporting other pens besides the apple pencil (I don’t know when, and in what way)
This video was exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this:
I'm looking for a stylus for my daughter's iPad... she is going on 8 years old and is interested in video editing and just being creative with digital media.
Apple has apple care on everything if needed, aka warranty if needed be
Hi James have you tried the ESR Stylus? I'm curious if that can be good to use.
Awesome review, thanks 👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Heyy do you hear Any tap sound with the real Apple Pencil? Like the fake ones?
What about the USB-C apple pencil?
you only covered the cheapest of alternatives why didn't you try any of the adonit products? the apple pencil palesin comparison
Pales in comparison? Do they have pressure sensitivity when working in the iPad?
@@JamesJulier-Artist yes and palm rejection and many other features
Do any of these have Scribble support?
If I were you, I would use the Apple Pencil is not the other pencils because it’s super smooth at the inside and the outside it’s kind of like you’re holding a real pencil
Oh I do
Great video! What app are you using?
I think he’s using procreate.
I use the Adonit Note. ($69 USD). Can’t complain. It does the job nicely.
And no Apple Tax😊
that's almost exactly what I paid for my Apple Pencil 2 ($79.99 at Best Buy on sale)
I have one that actually charges just like the Apple Pencil 2 - I wish you had tried one of those bc I’m curious to hear what you might think of it. It was only around $32 usd.
Wich one?
Does Sanfront pencil work with any tablet ? Looking for a good pencil stylus i can use for notes and stuff
I throw the package of my pencil in the trash
so i really don’t remember what was it but its none of these that were in the video, however it just doesn’t write when i put my hand on the ipad while holding it,it starts glitching and deleting what im trying to write,it basically only writes when no skin touches the screen,im a highschool student and i really need a nice one to only write notes with at least, what do u suggest me to get??
thank you James, I had no idea there were backup products ,as mentioned I'm new to ipad digital and procreate.
All the pencils I tested on this video we demoed on my iPad Pro
I have a techbox pencil and it has both wireless charging and palm rejection and literally looks like the og ☺️
Can u grab me a link?
Can you put your hand on the screen with all of them
Hey James, what do you think about Apple Pencil Hover feature?
Personally it has no appeal to me but I know some people used to other formats like a Wacom it will appeal more
Is there a Apple pencil 1 alternative with palm rejection?
What us the name of the app? also this video is very helpful. 😊
Procreate 😊
The top piece is not for if the battery dies, cmon man. It’s for the functions your pen can’t perform like swiping home and accessing the control center.
Why would you not do that with your fingers? Makes no sense to me sorry
@@JamesJulier-Artist I’m glad we both have opinions.
How many of these will work on a smartphone?
I do have the apple pen but I also did have a cheaper fake one so they both work the same so if you want something cheap then the fake one is better
Which is best alternate
Thank you very much, very helpful indeed.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi James...maybe you know if there is a compatible pencil for a ipad pro 2 model A1567 from 2014 ?
I got a £2.50 pencil and it does all of it without bluetooth power and batteries. It also can shade.
Tilt and pressure sensitivity?
Just an Apple ad before this
What drawing app are you using during this video?
Procreate m8 it’s 13 pound on iPad but is well worth it it is used for professional use all the time
Any chance you would give away any one these pencils for students?
What’s the name of the app u use to draw? I use concepts but I wanna try other things
I just need something cheap to take notes occasionally on my iPad in Uni, when not typing notes.
i have xeron and it’s amazing !
EVERYONE! Logi IS NOT A BEST TO BUY!
when I bought it it was working but after Tami’s birthday party, it wasn’t working and I charged it and charged it forever! But it still won’t work! Also it’s £60 pounds so don’t waste ur money!
Those pencil alternatives are great, but I’ve experienced a one problem
while using one of those. When you take notes or draw something I always hear how the pencil “knocks the screen” ( I hope it makes sense to you), which is quite annoying for me as I can’t take a pencil with me to school… So, is there the same problem while using an Apple pencil or not?
the apple pencil makes the same noise ur referring to
There are silicone tip you can buy to reduce noice
no pressure sensitivity. Then what's the point?
I bought Apple Pencil 1, thinking it would work with my iPhone 6s Plus, but it never
Apple Pencil compatibility
You can use Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with these iPad models:
iPad mini (6th generation)
iPad Air (4th generation and later)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)
iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
Apple Pencil (1st generation)
Apple Pencil (1st generation)
You can use Apple Pencil (1st generation) with these iPad models:
iPad mini (5th generation)
iPad (6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th generation)
iPad (10th generation)*
iPad Air (3rd generation)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd generation)
iPad Pro 10.5-inch
iPad Pro 9.7-inch
So basically anything that does not have pressure sensitivity, is useless for most that are interested. Just ordered an apple pencil 2 used on Amazon for $60
I have the ipad mini 4 would u recommend me penyear stylus 🙂
Even if Apple didn't bork competing products, Apple accessories are just more compatible with Apple products.
