Yes 120hz screen, 4gb ram, truetone, stereo speaker, laminated display, but for 350 I could have obtained the same result (or at least a similar one) for what concerns the main reason I bought the device.

    Just want to say that, your channel has the best reviews from an artist perspective, you get straight to the point without losing any time with those unboxing shenanigans. I get that ppl like to see the unboxing, but its largely irrelevant if you are trying to know how the device actually works.
    As for the iPad slowing down, thats just normal, both software and hardware are subject to Wear and Tear ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wear_and_tear ). The software part that's easy to fix, just clean it up. The hardware though, its inevitable, and nothing you can really do about it. Another factor to consider is avoiding upgrading the OS to any much higher version to what it was originally conceived and designed to use. Obviously as technology progresses, OSes become more feature rich and require additional "power" to operate. If you try to install a modern OS in some device that is 10 years old, you will most certainly feel some loss in performance.

    I have a 1st gen iPad Pro since release date, and i don't have any slowdown. Maybe x app runs slower or y app runs faster; but this is due te x or y app updates, not the hardware or iOs updates.
    Procreate runs fast as always. Same with Astropad / Astropad Studio, even some 3D apps i use occasionally.
    I have other kind of problems (like gestures don't work from time to time), but not slowdowns.

    Hi Brad!
    (This is about the 1st gen ipad stuff you mentioned at the end)
    I have the 1st generation ipad pro as well (via your reviews recommending it), and I haven't been having any issues with the ipad slowing down. In fact, after watching, I connect to astropad and gave it a go with as similar a test I could manage as the one you demonstrated. I had absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. The only difference I could see is that I'm using the Studio version of Astropad, rather than yours (which I assume is Astropad Standard). I don't know if this is based on when you got your ipad, when I got mine (some kind of revision on mine, since I didn't get it day one?) or Astropad is slowing down, as opposed to studio, or even that I might not have used my ipad nearly as much as you have, and as such my battery is more "fresh" (I don't know how much you utilize your ipad compared to me, so I'm a bit in the dark on that one)
    I just wanted to bring that to your attention, since there may be something other than Apple at play here.
    Whether or not that is the case, Love the review! Always happy to see you in my subscription box! Keep up the awesome videos!

  • @richarda3764
    @richarda3764 5 лет назад +1

    That hardware slowdown is exactly why I left Apple products. Every iPhone, iPad, and Mac I had slowed down greatly over just a few years. I assumed the way they attached security updates to the OS updates that also included new features was the only reason things were slowing down. Once I saw they actually WERE slowing devices down, I was out.

    I have the iPad 6, I don’t use the Apple Pencil, I use a MoKo stylus without pressure sensitivity or tilt or Bluetooth, so in about a little bit, I’m probably going to change to the Apple Pencil, but the iPad 6 is an amaaaaazing iPad, it handles drawings well, it handles big files well, it has a 1080p screen, your asking for the best budget iPad in the world, including the Apple Pencil or a bamboo stylus that will be an additional $100, so about $350 if you get the iPad 32 gigs with the Apple Pencil
    And yes, i liked my own comment, SO SUE ME!

    Apple devices had always been slowing down after 2 year even before this slow down thing appeared. Older processors just cannot keep up with the newer, more power hungry software. Also this intentional slowdown just does not help Apple devices as well.

    • @aeriose
      @aeriose 6 лет назад +1

      But his first-gen iPad Pro has a faster processor than the new 2018 iPad, so how does this make any sense?

    • @Philosophey
      @Philosophey 6 лет назад

      aeriose First gen iPad pro has an A9X processor whereas this new iPad has A10 processor. A10 chip is marginally faster in single and multicore performance. In addition to that as I said older hardware is only one reason. Other reason is probably far more important which is intentional slowdown by Apple themselves. First gen iPad pro comes from the era of this issue. Same era as iPhone 6s so it is probably slowed down by Apple.

    I have a first generation small iPad Pro and I probably wouldn’t e able to tell the difference when using the new one. I’ve only had it for a year and a half, and that is kind of annoying. I don’t expect to have an IPad for ever, like my 8 year old cintiq, but 18 months or two years is not worth what I spend. Specially since (best case scenario) I still have do do a final edit in photoshop of any piece done there before I send it to the client.

    Thanks Brad! I had really been considering if I should replace my iPad Air 2 with the new iPad 6th gen or a Pro with all the drawing I'm going to do for my next project, and you definitely solved that for me. I can get 2 of these for the EXACT price of one iPad pro - and with the battery degradation you talk about - that would be the smarter choice. I didn't even consider it, despite the fact that the battery in my iPad Air 2 is basically dead. If I charge it fully and just lay it idly on a table for 3 days, it dies and needs a new charge. The truetone display is not really a selling point on a graphics device if you ask me. I want to see the real colors. So the only thing left is the space between the digitizer and the screen - and I will just take your word that it is not super noticeable when you use it.

      Brad Colbow Agreeing with Min Lungelow’s comment - a reset can work wonders, or you could even try deleting and reinstalling slightly fewer and fresh copies of apps if you want to give that a shot first. I’ve seen just deleting some apps work wonders for an iPad 2 that still runs well that a family member of mine uses daily (7 years after they bought it).
      Worst case I’ve had was an iPad Air that had awful backup issues, where it was so laggy on the backup, it’d take 12 hours to do it. On top of that, it also suffered massively on its first update to iOS 11, crashing and slowing to the point of being unusable. In that case, I manually backed up all my important files to my computer and icloud, wiped the device, deleted the old iTunes backups, and then set the iPad up again as a brand new device and reloaded my files. Since then, it’s been clipping along at a nice happy pace, rarely crashes (if ever), and backups have been faster than this device has ever seen. It even worked at least decently with Astropad for the first time in its life (although, to be fair, I’d also deleted and reinstalled Astropad on my computer too, and I think they’d made also some improvements since I had tried the program last, so that may have contributed as well).
      I hope you’re able to get your iPad running nice and fast again. Best wishes! 👍

    Different is with Display pen it doesn’t process program on its own so it won’t slow down that easy. With ipad it processing everything on it so the longer you use, the more cache or files running around and that’s slowing down the device. It’s something we all have to deal with

    I've been debating Ipad for about a year, being a Graphic Design student. Along with being a student also comes the budget of a student. For me, it was cheap or none. I mustered enough for a wacom intuos pro, but i now want to get something i can draw directly on. This review convinced me that I should get the new IPad 2018, though i would love a pro, this will definitely do the job. Thank you for helping me in my decision with a very entertaining video!

    The base Ipad, was outstanding good value if you look at how potent the hardware, actually are versus price...
    Im not an Apple guy, but needed a device with Lightning port for an Infrared camera and purchse first one in early 2018, and was so impressed that I also picked one up for my mom.
    after all getting 3600&6100 in single/multicore and 13.500 in Compute in Geek4 was impressive scores for a budget device to like 300 USD and even with high-end Android devices in early 2018 it was difficult to reach 13.500 on the graphic SoC chip.
    and likely also the reason why 2019 are getting the same SoC as the A10 did perform above and beyond what you could expect at that price.

    I got the iPad immediately after it came out and the primary use was for sketching with the Apple pen. It's been an awesome experience. I couldn't justify buying a full fledged iPad Pro (too expensive, same for a Cintiq), so this was my only option for getting something that is better than a graphic tablet where you draw in one place (plastic tablet) and look at your art in another place (screen) - ugh. The iPad with the Apple Pen has been one of the best purchases I made in a long time.

      Lilly Aguilar I couldn't figure that out for drawing at all! I tried it a few times and I hate it and feel like I'm the only one. Must be something I'm doing wrong. I hope your comment gets more traction because I would love to love Affinity Photo but, right now, I just can't.

    • @Jupzilla
      @Jupzilla 6 лет назад +1

      Meiya007 it feels like autocorrect, but for drawing... like I’m trying to sketch and it’ll snap to points and correct lines after I made them... I just want to sketch! I don’t know how to mess with settings just to get it to draw with... (cry forever...)

    • @henrys_arte8173
      @henrys_arte8173 6 лет назад

      Your best option is draw in procreate, I've tried affinity photo for that and my ipad is and pencil are not reacting well to it. The lag is horrible but whereas photo editing works flawlessly.

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 6 лет назад

      As far as I know you can diminish the stabilizer/smoothing strength (in every app ! ). I've drawn both in Affinity Photo and Designer, no serious problems, but other than that is like any other application for desktop. If you are on desktop, for *image editing* (aka photo retouch, etc) the best route is Affinity *Photo* , or if needing less features and kind of prefer the type of UI, PaintShop Pro . For professionals, IMO is better Affinity Photo, as for drawing feel, for now is better PSP .The company behind Affinity, Serif, plans to rebuild the drawing system, I think. Once that arrives, my advice would be A. Photo all the way in any case, just like Photoshop has its advantages on keeping all tasks in the same app.
      But totally, for actually just painting, my hugest recommendation is going for Krita. Not just because it is FREE! . But because of QUALITY and ease of use. Get the version 4 at krita.org . Is freakin' fully free. And if want the most amazing ever tool for comic drawing ink line art (krita gives IMO much more variety in PAINTING tools), give it a try to the commercial application called Clip Studio Paint (before known as Manga Studio, and I believe yet so called inside Japan) . It totally rocks. And indeed, has good enough painting tools and features - like for digital painting- even if krita seems to have more variety in that department. I indeed often recommend using both. And I am a Photoshop expert, and pro in many other painting apps. I know what I'm speaking about. I would NOT go for CSP in iPad, as I think they made it subscription based, and I hate that. In desktop is not. Is just a cheap purchase. If you are in the iPad, I'd go with Procreate, personally. As mentioned by some, above. And surely Sketchbook.Both. First one as is quite a complete illustration application with enough features and case scenarios for actual work. Sketchbook as... dunno, I always loved how good is that one for actually drawing, fresh lines, etc. Look, giving a try to several tools is a cool thing to do, even to acquire several. Along complex projects, you step with issues that are dealt better in some software tool than another, and the other way round. The more, the merrier, after all, all these are DIRTY cheap, at least if your personal pocket allows you already to pay for an internet connection.... ;)
      And if really not even small cash available, GO FOR KRITA. That thing is a jewel, and it is free.

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons 6 лет назад

      Oh... and KRITA does have an entire module to do certain 2D animation, with onion skin feature and all that. Kind of I'm more just into digital painting, and drawing. But is quite a nice addon to be able to do some animation inside Krita, too !

    Thank you very much for your review, it was exactly what I was looking for! I'm a Cintiq user and although it's true that Wacom doesn't "downgrade" their devices like Apple seems doing with iphones and Ipads, I have to say that Cintiq are EXTREMELY fragile. I've lost my 22hd (that I was super happy of) because the inner led strip died, and I can't just see anymore what's on the screen, even if the device works! Now I've a 27inch model that is great but I'm really scared that I could repeat the experience or having other problems: I've already seen the one of a friend of mine (an illustrator) that died after less then three years, and because of the super expensive price of these devices (that are of course pointed to a prosumer audience) this is really unacceptable.
    So finding an interactive display for drawing that is reliable in time remains a problem :(

    I don't necessarily have a problem with slowing things down for battery consumption, but I don't understand why that can't just be an option as a part of something like "Low Power Mode," which iOS devices already have, and most (if not all) other devices have something similar. If I'm away from home or unable to charge and my battery is getting slow, give me the option to slow down my device, dim the screen, whatever, to conserve battery. But if I'm not worried about battery, let me have the option to keep running my device at full capacity.

    I have to say I feel much better the more I learn about the new iPad. The Pro works better for me, since I work on files for print 16x20 at 300 DPI on Affinity Photo with about a 100 layers, and yes I have reached the limits of the device a couple times. My files have cause the application to crash on occasion, until I began to hide layers. If I were to use smaller files or lower resolutions then the new iPad sounds great.

    I really don’t see Apple slowing down astropad on old iPads intentionally.. if that’s happening it’ll just be a mistake or a change in how the remote screen stuff works having a negative effect.. like how Duet display just broke in the latest High Sierra. I have the original 9.7” iPad Pro from the same year as yours, with half the RAM of the 12” and it’s still running smoothly here. Likewise things like Procreate and Comic Draw have continued to be smooth and responsive.

I was mainly going to use it as a digital sketchbook and media consumption and preferred to get the 128GB version vs the 256gb 10.5". I'll wait another year or so before deciding if an upgrade to a more "Pro" version is warranted.

      So I tried a 9H glass screen protector, and the "shading" with the pencil was a bit wonky. I think the distance inherent already in the screen to digitizer gap is magnified with the thickness of a glass screen protector. So, I took it off and noticed better shading and tracking. I'm going to look at a film based protector now.

    Your iPad Pro is not slowing down because of throttling. I have a launch day Air 2 that performs identically to brand new, with benchmarks that prove it. I’m not even sure they throttle iPads because iPad batteries are so large and are designed to last up to 1000 cycles (twice as many as iPhone batts). It would take at least 3 years before you saw any battery related performance hits, if they even have performance optimization’s enabled on iPad. The latest iOS 11.3 doesn’t have the performance management option in battery settings like the iPhone gained, I assume because it’s not necessary with iPads. There is no conspiracy, and it’s a shame Apple took such a PR hit over something like this when their intentions were as they stated, to PROLONG iPhones lifespan not SHORTEN it. Besides, you can always have Apple replace the battery if the battery is deteriorated.
    I’m pretty well entrenched in Windows PCs due to work, and PCs getting slower/more buggy as they age and fill up with bloat is RAMPANT on Windows. Windows is legendary for this. “Restore your PC” is a common suggestion whenever someone’s PC runs like shit. A Windows PC starts to perform like shit within months. Same thing on Android. Android manufacturers don’t even support their devices beyond 2 years at the most. And Apple is the one to get this ridiculous conspiracy? A 2 year old throttled iPhone probably still outperforms a 1 year old Android device. And still gets support from Apple with software updates and tech support. I just don’t understand the conspiracy. It’s because it’s Apple, the most successful company in the world that people love to hate on. Their success is an outlier because they operate different from most tech companies, and so many DESPISE that success. Being on top creates a lot of enemies.

    • @applesdust8020

      I have to agree. I bought a pc and literally two weeks after it started running like shit. Ended up returning for a refund and haven't been back since. I've also had hell with android tablets. I had a samsung tab A 10.5 inch for a graphics tablet for about a year and one day it died on a trip because I forgot my charger and could not be charged since. I'd rather spend three times as much for a product that will work every time I plug it in, every time I turn it on with limited issue, than "save" money with android and pc products. I didn't even save money at that point with the tablet, had I just saved instead of buying two 350 dollar tablets I would have had enough for the ipad pro. I have an iphone 6, still works wonderfully. No lag. Some battery issues but that's because its an older device, so it's expected. Never had luck with android. Ever. And I'll never go back.

    iOS runs nicely on only 2 GB of RAM because it's optimized so well; it's not nearly as much of a memory hog as Android. I think that at least 5 years from now, it will run fine. I still have an iPad 2 from 2011 with only 512 MB of RAM and it works pretty okay in 2019! Just had to do a system refresh. Its last software update (iOS 9) was in 2016 however, so I'm stuck with old versions of a lot of my apps; as of now, most apps in the App Store require at least iOS 10.

    It’s weird that I hear you mention about the slowing down on the devices through the years. I have been using an iPad Air for nearly a year and it was used and about two years old and I have not experienced any of this lagging and etc. that you mentioned maybe it’s because I mainly use my device for illustration or maybe it’s because it just doesn’t bother me. And if that’s the case I don’t fear the iPad getting older and slowing down. And I even use a Wacom stylus.

  • @jonnymyong

    @Brad Colbow If you update your operating system to 11.3 - which just came out a few days ago - you can disable the throttling of the processor if the battery is degraded enough. If this doesn't fix it, it may just be that the processor it has can't keep up with more updated versions of software. Hope this helps!

    Try erasing and restoring your old iPad Pro. Also good to remember that two years (really three, the 1st gen iPP came out in 2015) used to be a lot of time in computer-land. Desktop/laptops have leveled off enough that that's not true but with portable devices (especially with intensive apps like Astropad) two years can make a *huge* difference. Sadly Apple doesn't allow you to revert back to earlier iOS/App versions so testing if it is the device slowing down or not keeping up with recent advances is hard to check.

    One other thing about performance is that the local storage helps performance! If your 2015 iPad is pretty full up, it most likely would perform better if you did a factory reset. (Supposedly, anyway!)

    Brad. Thank you so much for your view of your iPad Pro from 2 years ago. This has been a concern of mine for a while now.
    Sure the iPhone has received the “battery health” update but the iPad has not. I would be very keen to have that update on my iPad as I’d love to turn the throttling off and just use the iPad at a speed that is serviceable. I’m sure you feel the same about your Pro.
    This is the one major roadblock for me using an iPad as a drawing tablet.

    I'm finding this video 4 years after it was released (really enjoying your content, btw) and I'm curious if the iPad slowed down?

      It still works well. If you don’t use huge canvases, it also works well with procreate. An A4 gives you 19 layers.

    It’s hard to complain that “slowing down” issue. It’s lucky for 5s/6 users which still get latest update. Can you get that in other OS ecosystem? In android you can’t do that for older devices without using custom ROM. I’m an active android user too btw

    I’ve always seen people say “get the
    Pro if you’re gonna do professional work” or “get the iPad 2018 if you’re just drawing as a hobby” but what if you’re in the middle lol? Is this adequate enough for some professional work? I like the price range and the new 2018 pros are really expensive, and the 2017 pros are still kinda expensive. I mostly draw for fun but occasionally I get commissioned for work which is why I say I’m in the middle c:

      kiblaze i saw some great artists bought the 2018 ipad despite as you said, its still expensive for pro. whatever which ipad, both works well. pro is indeed aiming for pro artists like comic artists example but if you want to keep budget safe, go with ipad 2018 (or try the 1st gen pro, price bit similar too for some)

      @@Roxxiane I was quoting other people, which is why I asked if it could still be used for professional work when needed. I don't do art for a living, its side work I do when inquired about it. I think the ipad+pencil could speed up my work time. Just wasn't sure if I would sacrifice much by going with the 2018 over a pro (and if I do get a pro it would be the 10.5in not the 11in 2018 pro). Thank you for the input! It definitely helps.

      kiblaze get the 9.7 pro (2016) one if you feel like want the pro but dont want to overspend. one IG artist named meyoco recently said she sell her 12 inch 2nd pro & bought the 2016 9.7 pro instead. She said it run smooth without facing laggy / slow down. So maybe you could go with that. But if you have big budget, definitely the 10.5 one :D

      Roxxiane I think I follow that same artist but I may have missed the notice about the change in iPads. The 10.5 in is definitely cheaper than the new 2018 iPad Pro, and I’ve seen it on sale so I may not have to break bank too much for it. But I’ll look into the 9.7 too so I have options to compare c: Again thank you for the tip.

    Apple Fanboy!!! I totally kid. Man I'm hooked on your videos. I've had this life long dream of learning to draw, and on another video of yours (how I found my style) you mentioned how you draw in symbols instead of realism, or something similar. That blew my mind. I was looking into buying a refurbished full spec'ed iPad Pro, but thanks to this review I'll be getting this new iPad. Thanks for everything you share and teach. You have become a role model for me.
