what makes the word "gamer" so weird is that it transforms a hobby into an all consuming identity. People who play soccer wouldn't call themselves "soccers" or people who run wouldn't only refer to themselves as "runners". But apparantly playing video games is a complete identity.

Might just be because of the timesink of the hobby. Running and playing soccer tend to only take a few hours out of any given day, and people don't do that every day. Whereas video games tend to have longer, more frequent sessions. It taking up more time in your day/week might lead to a stronger sense of identity with that given hobby.

At my school camp a few years ago when we went to the showers which were very far from our rooms (where our stuff was) and no one remembered to bring any soap or shampoo and i found a sealed full bottle of XBOX SHAMPOO in the corner of the room and for the rest of the 5 days everyone decided to use it and we all ended up smelling like epic gamers.

My dad (over 60 years old) asked me "Are you a gamer?" knowing damn well I've been playing video games for close to two decades. Never before had I been so irrationally pissed off at him for something that's not in any way meant to be anything other than a normal and ignorant question.

I remember being praised when I was little for having a PC and playing CoD, inviting all the clasmates over and having fun. It was a specialty, a novelty to have my own PC at the age of 6. My classmates would always tell stories of my place and how great of a time they had. Now I don't even want to be labelled as a gamer anymore, even though I do play quite a lot every day. It became mainstream and becasue of that all the weird people joined in as well, like grown ass men playing VR Chat with an anime skin or generally just people with anime profile pictures, virgins and all that. (I watch anime here and there and I don't condem people for liking anime but when you take a picture with your waifu shirt/bodypillow and a girl sees it, I don't think you are gonna look hot) I know generalising is a bad thing but come on, you can pin point these people in your friends list as well and I am sure most of you avoid being seen with them, or maybe it is just me and I am too old-fashioned. I just don't get how you can pose with a bodypillow with a smile and not think that you made a mistake.

One of my lecturers (I'm studying a game design course) mentioned how no-one that reads books really call themself a reader, or a movie-watcher: it's only really people that game that calls themself gamers.
He mentioned that the word "gamer" is an identity sold to most people - not in all cases, I would say, but definitely in a lot.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
