  • Ken Ham and his team have a weekly "news" show, reacting to the news stories of the day from a Christian young-earth creation perspective from the Answers in Genesis staff at his Creation Museum.
    Rachel Oates and I join Ken, Georgia, and Gabriella as they discuss - Sagan endorses spirituality; Behar labels Christians; NYT blames falling birthrates on capitalism; Dogor was a canine; Stars throwing comets and more during Answers News, broadcast live from the Creation Museum.

      Literally having this conversation with a creationist making this exact claim on another Paulogia video XD
      Claiming DNA is coded information, and we've only seen information come from intelligence, therefore god, despite this obviously leading to the logic, we've never seen a god, therefore no god can exist XD

    • @tetsujin_144
      @tetsujin_144 4 года назад +13

      Also, we found DNA, which does not apparently come from intelligence. If we look at only the information that clearly comes from an intelligence and say, "therefore this other information must have come from an intelligence as well" - it ignores the possibility that this other information may be a counter-example to that argument.

    I would say after 40 years as a Christian and 20 years as a pastor there are three main reasons people hold on to religion although I can only speak for Christianity experientially.
    1. The belief in an ultimate purpose or ultimate goal for life beyond what we can create ourselves.
    2. Fear of death, which is a survival thing but it carries over to wanting to survive ultimate death.
    3. Indoctrination through education.
    All of these stem from someone's ego or pride. The notion that you are entitled to have a purpose, eternal life and the 'need' to pass on the TRUTH to your progeny. I am now painfully aware that I was guilty as a pastor of reinforcing all of this. As an atheist now, I see the need to counter this with some compassionate antitheism. Why I appreciate channels like this one and am thinking of making my own.
    Boomers - "People are so offended these days, they need to grow up."
    Also boomers - "the phrase 'OK, Boomer' offends me."
    Me - "OK Boomer, grow up and develop a sense of humor about yourself."
    This service announcement brought to by a member of Generation X
    I love this channel and your guests. Peace.

      Ed Raby I'm happy to know you've embarked on a thoughtful, introspective, and skeptical journey of inquiry into the nature of the universe and what makes us human. I hope it is rewarding and fulfilling for you.
      Although I agree with all the roots and motivators of religious belief that you've identified, I don't think your list is comprehensive. There are likely numerous other aspects and rewards that draw people to religion, including tribal affiliation. (we are intensely social creatures.) One motivation for religious belief that I feel is particularly important is the aspect of human cognition that provides a sense of "cause and effect". When we encounter 'things' in the world around us, we have an immediate, arguably instinctual desire to understand how and why they came to be. The pain of childbirth, marine fossils occurring on a mountaintop, "pillars" of salt near the Dead Sea, the existence of cruelty and greed, that bad things happen to good people, that "sh;t happens". These things all demand some sort of [pseudo-] rational explanation. And into these vacancies in our understanding of the world steps the God of the Gaps.
      A commitment to a naturalistic understanding of the world reduces to nil the role of God in these matters; and whereas I find naturalism an ongoing and continual source of inspiration and awe, I think that for some people it engenders a sense of anxiety and frustration. Such people crave the reassurance of answers, as opposed to a never-ending an series of questions. Religion provides those answers, and for many people, this might be all they want.

    • @EdRaby71
      @EdRaby71 4 года назад +4

      @@MendTheWorld After being religious for so long, I do fight the anxiety that comes with mortality. My counselor says this is normal for people who go through this. I discarded my Christianity many years before I left the pulpit. I left belief in the supernatural and god a year ago or so. I agree that it is the now-empty gaps that I deal with but I guess I have developed a comfort level with ignorance to the point that I am comfortable with the ignorance of things I will never know but an insatiable curiosity about things in the world. I want to know what I can but I also can live with the things I cannot.
      Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the support.

      Well presented informative comment. Ultimately often many theists arguments boil down to the desire to feel “special” and chosen and difficulty accepting the idea humans are simply part a complex evolution and diversification of different life forms due to random changes in the environment. They rail against the possibility we are a small part of a vast universe and that we do not have some higher specific purpose than any other living creature. They can’t, on a practical level, claim we are the pinnacle of life and the literal centre of the universe so they have to resort to semantics and presuppositions to maintain a theoretical importance. Humans have not existed for a significant proportion of life on this planet and we become almost insignificant in the scope of the universe BUT that is not saying our existence at this point in time is meaningless or that we can’t strive to make out time here a positive experience for ourselves, those around us and for those who will follow. They are being dishonest and know it.

We can’t afford to right now, so no matter how upset we are about it, and how crushing it is every time we hear a pregnancy announcement from people who aren’t ready yet, we’re staying strong with making our decision to be childless until we can afford it. Me sacrificing the joy I know having my child will give me for a few years is for them, not for me. They need a mother that can provide for them, guide them, and encourage their passions; not one who is perpetually stressed about money, telling them they can’t do anything because we can’t afford it, and having panic attacks because I can’t see how I will make the money work. I’m not being selfish, I’m being an amazing mother to a child I don’t even have yet at my own expense.

      It's the other way around. A dog is a wolf. A wolf may be a dog but it may also be what the public considers to be a wolf- which is a type of wild canine. People get it confused because often it is said they belong to the 'dog family' to make it easier to understand. Those in the dog family are related to dogs not necessarily types of dogs. They are all types of canines. Some of them are dogs but not all.

      @Marilyn Newman I hadn't heard about a wolf project but they've been working with Silver Foxes since the 50's. They've bred enough generations that they now have foxes with more "dog like" features including colors, curly tails and floppy ears. They weren't traits that were chosen, but a side effect of breeding for tameness. There has been at least one documentary on this, a very interesting watch. They were also trying to find out if the tameness was genetic or how they were raised by transplanting fertilized eggs from tame females into wild females and vice versa.In 1959, Russian scientists began an experiment to breed a population of silver foxes, selecting and breeding foxes that exhibited friendliness toward people. They wanted to know if they
      could repeat the adaptations for tameness that must have occurred in
      domestic dogs.

    26:26 -- You can tell someone lives in a bubble when they say something like any woman can stay at home and raise kids if they just cut back on a few things. There are a large number of women or couples who don't have the 6 figure income to support that sort of lifestyle. For them, they have nothing to cut back. There are those couples who work two jobs but can't afford to add an extra person to feed and clothe. Many did have kids and rely on charities to supply things like food and diapers. Such children can grow up poor and malnourished.

They have no problem with an arbitrary purpose being opposed on them (that they have no say in) but *do have a problem* with an individual making a conscious choice for their purpose on their own. I don't understand a theist's thought process.
    BTW Kent, what's the problem with life being ultimately meaningless? That doesn't impact the meaning we give to life at the time, moment to moment.
