    Can I just say, I love that Megan nursed her baby like it was just something that women need to do now and then.
    Also, I have been fascinated by Georgia for a while now. She clearly has her own ideas about things and just as clearly sits on them, or as my dad used to say, bites her tongue. Sometimes she clearly has a sore tongue. However, I don't feel sorry for her. No one is holding a gun to her head.

      Your pagan habits is still here when church saved them ... Xmas is pagan origin , as is easter , mid summer , halloween , cinco mayo a.s.o
      Maya strings , those are made from material that nature can destroy very fast , there is no natural fabrics that last even 10 years when exposed to the elements .
      Mayan culture was gone when Europeans arrived to central America , or we would know about their cities roads and fortresses that have been found lately .
      Same that has happened with Egyptian culture that had fortifications 1000 year before Europeans .
      Chinese did not say a word of the wall to Marco Polo , and few others Europeans that visited Chine around same time , when they wanted to forget that costly part of their history .
      Like Americans replaced their horses to cars , today roads are not made for horses , so clearly Americans never used horses ... thats a valid argument , but not true .

      @Clade Starfish you are very definitely thinking of the aztec codices, there were aztec codices which were destroyed. We actually have a decent amount of written work from the mayan era because it was carved in stone. Paper would not have survived unattended in that climate long enough for the spanish to get to it.

    This is my favourite Paulogia thus far for a couple of reasons.
    1. I have a theological degree. It reminded me why I found the bible so fascinating to study, which was mostly to do with some of the interesting stories in it. I became atheist while studying the bible.
    2. I also studied history, and it was great to hear how archeology doesn't necessarily back up biblical accounts. I already knew that, but it was interesting to hear it stated in such a simple manner.
    Keep up the good work, everyone!

    Watched this again because it's really interesting, but the linguist in me is dying a little. The whole thing about Adam being intelligent so of course he could write... What does intelligence have to do with writing? There are modern humans who are perfectly intelligent but speak languages that don't have writing systems. Writing systems are constructed when there are reasons to do so. If Adam existed and only had his family to communicate with, he wouldn't have had any reason for a writing system. If I'm remembering correctly, writing systems started when trade became common, in order to take inventory and write receipts. Also, if Adam wrote some kind of creation story (which he wouldn't have been there to see, since he was created last), that would have happened before the Tower of Babel. Assuming every spoken language had a writing form (sorry, the linguist in me is dying more than a little now), anything Adam wrote would have been incomprehensible to people after the tower of Babel, since... presumably God would have also confused their writing systems. And Moses was after the tower of Babel, so he wouldn't have been able to use anything. Even apart from the glaringly awful ignorance of how languages work, their narrative isn't even self-consistent. If they stopped to think it through for ten minutes they would realize how stupid it sounds.

    • @williambarnes5023

      Ants have a writing system.

    • @EdwardHowton
      @EdwardHowton 5 лет назад

      I'm curious. What are these languages that people speak but don't have writing systems? I tried to think of one but I came up dry... or at least, until I remembered the carnie language from The Black List. Would that be one of them? I'd really love to know more.

    • @dragongirl7978
      @dragongirl7978 5 лет назад +15

      @@EdwardHowton Well, generally the languages without writing systems aren't going to be ones people have heard of, because if the speakers join the global community, they usually either develop a writing system (often by adopting another alphabet and adapting it) or start speaking a more dominant language (which is the leading cause of language death). But they're very common in more isolated areas with indigenous people, such as the Amazon, parts of Africa, and even parts of China. One trend in the linguistics community is to seek out these languages and make a record of them before they die. One of my professors in my masters program spent a lot of time researching languages in South America near the Amazon. Also, with the notable exception of Cherokee, I think most Native American languages don't (or at least didn't) have writing systems. According to statistics, there are almost as many unwritten languages as written languages, though that's likely to change as things become more global.

    When I was a devout Christian reading the Bible. I went in with absolutely no bias or presuppositions,(or background information on science) and I came away with the interpretation of Genesis speaking in obvious metaphors, because I could recognize the way the Bible used the words in later books. Reading Joshua, I recognized the conquest writing, and during Revelations, I recognized the apocalyptic language.
    What really kicked me down the road to athiesm us when I met evangelicals like Ken Ham, who would rebuke me because I didn't take a literal interpretation a
    Of the Bible all around.
    Even according to the Bible, it doesn't contain absolute truth, it doesn't even know that a mustard seed isnt the smallest.

    • @monus782

      Sounds alot like my story, except I come from a church that claims to be compatible with science for not taking Genesis too literally. That is, until I found out through its more fundie members that that I was supposed to believe Adam and Eve were real people. It was here I realized that if you take them out of the picture most of traditional Christianity falls apart no less because what exactly did Jesus come down to die for? To undo Adam's sin.

    Shelton Smith's Evolution vs Creation is rather funny. If you watch that check out the Gish vs Russel Dolittle debate. He brings it up and reads part of the Washington Post article about it that makes Dolittle looks bad but ignores the rest of the article. He came up with a version of the crocoduck in 1980. It is 3 parts you can get at the Sword of the Lord.

    You must read and critically accept everything in the bible

      If you are accepting anything in the bible as truth, you are seriously deluded.

    Damn, I have listened to several hours of Megan's podcast with Bart Ehrman and it just now hit me she wasn't American. I'm usually just mesmerized by how perfect her teeth are.

    How come they have stacks of cuneiform tablets, but we keep seeing pictures of God writing on a scroll? Please don't answer that.

    I thought it was pretty well settled that the quipu (knotted strings) were an accounting tool and that quechua was a well-known and understood living language. What is this about a Rosetta stone? Hamm obviously understands linguistics and history far better than I do.

    Some time ago I had an apologist pull the meteor story on me. Rather than argue about its truth I just said "Great! That's really cool. I do have one question though. Which is more likely - that the Biblical account is true and God made it happen, or that a meteor exploded in the atmosphere and devastated two major cities and the surrounding area, and having no idea what had actually happened they made up the story to fit the facts...just like all the myths about lightning and the sun's path through the sky and all the other stuff we now know have natural explanations?"

    I think any time you show Ham and crew talking about science, you should remind the audience that their official stance is _ANYTHING_ that contradicts the bible _MUST_ be wrong and thus rejected. Even if they cant prove why they think it's false, they must declare it as false on the simple grounds that it contradicts their biblical view.

    Apocalyptic genre? We have post-apocalyptic fiction. Take that, ancients.
