    The original version of this video was blocked by the BBC for footage used in Ken Ham's original video. Rather than try to fight for Ken Ham's right to use it, I've made replacements in the spots where BBC complained and hopefully we're good to go. The bonus is that Erika will be able to join us in the live chat!

    My favorite young earth creationist lie is that it is easy to distinguish between “human kind” skulls and “ape kind” skulls. You don’t even have to leave creationist sources to debunk it. Different YEC organizations will categorize the same skull in different ways. In fact, AiG’s own Answers Research Journal has competing papers on whether a particular fossil specimen was an ape or a human, and both authors of these papers are YEC.

    A bit more information on the gorillas "not sounding like they're singing."
    What they're considering music is actually based on traits that are only found in westernized cultures. The octave scale may be the most common, but it's far from the only one. Different groups of people have more or less notes in their scales, and while they consider it beautiful, it's simply impossible to write using the same notation or played on the same instruments as ours, and we'd barely comprehend it as music even if we could.
    The point I'm trying to make is that that Gorilla is singing something a heck of a lot closer to human music than Ham and Co. would ever care to know.

    • @BlackEpyon
      @BlackEpyon 4 года назад +12

      When you consider how much variation there is just in "western" music, and how just within that set are different genres that could be offensive to somebody within the west (say, between classical and rock, or western and rap), it goes without saying.

I checked on my keyboard it was a F# down to a C#, and not far off our 12 equal temperament system. Bet they've been influenced by human music from the radio or something though. I wonder if

      I couldn't help but see huge issues with their claim "They are just growling" especially given the context where they were making implications that there is no "language" there. Guess that humming is not musical either then right after all there is no annunciation of the language information when humans hum as when we only include a simplified abstract of the underlying melody when humming a tune. Seems to me what they call growling is very much like humming with the only main difference I could hear being that the gorilla tune was several octaves lower than we humans typically compose our music around though this too seems exactly what you would expect given their larger size etc. Smaller resonant cavities amplify at higher frequencies than larger ones, we don't build chellos that size for the fun of it the size is intentional to give it the lower note than the smaller violin lower frequencies have longer wavelengths thus a larger cavity is needed to allow longer frequency waves to properly form and be amplified need enough space that the entire wavelength can exist without encountering a discontinuity of medium after all otherwise all you do is distort the wave entirely and expose it to out of phase reflections etc.

    When I was a "Creationist," I looked at a model cat skeleton at the vet's office, and noted how eerily similar our bone structure is, despite the obvious differences. You can point to that skeleton, and identify the same bones that a human has, just shaped differently. But looking at these "ape" skulls, let alone the rest of the skeleton, how could you NOT come to the conclusion that we're related to the rest of the apes? At the very minimum, God would have been working off of the same version 1.0 blueprints, they're just too similar!
    Of course, once you remove God from the picture, everything makes sense.

      As I understand it, the issue is that it’s hard to tell if she understood and reasoned a response or used trial and error. I don’t mean trial and error to learn, I mean you can see footage of her throwing together a word salad looking for positive outcomes even late in her life. The problem is that the testimonies of people working with her are so negative (including abuse allegations victimizing her and keepers) and the actual data was not published. Keepers would just write claims about what she did and not provide methodology, hypotheses, or evidence we can test (say video of the interactions we can all analyse). Now there is some of all of this but not enough in the skeptics opinion.

    • @Petticca

      @scotthancock305
      It's not about the ability to communicate, it's well understood that primates communicate, they have complex, social structures and interactions, after all.
      It's specifically about the idea that these individual animals could use a human created and formalized, symbolic language, or sign language to communicate their inner thoughts, needs, and desires... And even _convey_ abstract concepts using our language.
      And at no point is there anything approaching demonstrable evidence for the claims being asserted and implied.
      Researchers today seem to be content to study the communication methods, and evidence of 'language' of other primates, in the context of the specific primates being observed, without the idea that the communication and 'language' use they've developed being a sort of rudimentary, less sophisticated version of ours, comparable to our young's.

    I think that I might have had a nerdgasm while listening to this episode. I have a bachelor's degree in linguistics and love learning about animal communication, but when Paul mentioned knowing Ben Burtt, I lost my mind! Ben Burtt is one of my favourite behind the scenes (except for "Freeze!" in Jedi) movie makers of all time, besides maybe Edith Head. Too cool!

      Humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor.

      You don't have to "make a monkey of of Ken". Look at his face. Every time he looks in the mirror he KNOWS we are apes, and his self hatred is what drives his relentless attacks on reality.

Plus, putting in other intelligent animal species together in one video (chimpanzee, gorilla, and dolphin) you should mention the Uplift novel series by David Brin that has humans purposefully making those species on the level of human intelligence. It's awesome and should be read by all sci-fi fans.
