- Hosea Matthews is a major character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Not much is known about Hosea's past, other than he was "raised in the mountains" as he puts it. At some point in the past, he met and fell in love with a woman named Bessie, whom he even temporarily left the gang for - she died prior to 1899. In his younger days, Matthews was a robber. According to Matthews, he and Dutch van der Linde met sometime in the mid-1870s, when both men tried to rob each other. After that event, the two became best friends, and they both founded the Van der Linde gang with Hosea being Dutch's right-hand man.
Hosea is both the most senior member of the gang and Dutch's oldest friend. Intelligent and level-headed, Hosea regularly advises Dutch and is valued for his wisdom. As much as he shares similar ideals, he appears to be much more pragmatic in his understanding of what lies in store for the gang.
Hosea is first seen riding with Dutch on the wagon in the opening cinematic. He tells Dutch that they need to find shelter and fast, he then points out Arthur up ahead. Later the following morning Abigail begs Arthur to find John, who hasn't returned in two days. After a slight argument, Hosea steps in and tells Arthur that they are all worried about him and tells Arthur and Javier to go look for him. Upon their return, Hosea tells Arthur that they plan on having to move East, which is met with extreme hesitation by Morgan. Hosea is then seen a few days later loading up the wagons, preparing to leave. Upon arriving in New Hanover Hosea and Arthur hang back to fix the broken wagon with the help of Charles Smith. He then points out the Native Americans positioned atop the ridge and tells Arthur and Charles what happened, which leads to a discussion about Charles and later, Arthur's upbringings. He later hands Arthur his utilities on crafting items before reaching the new camp. In this chapter, he will also help rob the train, and assault the O'Driscoll camp.
After setting up camp, Hosea can be seen wandering around camp, doing various activities. Later he and Arthur will go out hunting in Ambarino for a "1000 pound bear". After nearly being attacked him and Arthur either return to camp together, or they will part ways.

Hosea could have been a better leader than Dutch: He is calm, collected, rational and reasonable, traits required for leadership. Also, unlike Dutch, Hosea isn't an egomaniac, which could make him extremely dangerous.
Hosea while his skills as a gunslinger aren't on par with Arthur, he still can handle himself in combat if necessary.
Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young.
The main thing that dutch had over hosea was making people feel like he was a bigger than life figure, while hosea would always be too down to Earth to be like that.
Honestly, if Dutch headed Hosea's advice more things might've not turned out as bad. (Besides the bank job that got him killed, which is a cruel irony.)

@@Vomer0 I agree. The only thing Hosea lacked was a loud mouth. He was too soft-spoken to inspire those who weren’t close to him. However, I’ve always had greater respect for quiet, wise people than I’ve had for bellowing blowhards.

Michal Rejdovjan he was underrated because we as players didn’t think we’d miss him when he died. He was the only character in the gang that kept Dutch in line.

@@screamer5029 In a cutscene featuring Braithwaite and Hosea earlier in the storyline, they were talking about playing "cribbage", an antiquated board game of sorts. By saying what he did, Hosea was effectively remarking about how far removed they were now, with the Braithwaite manor burning around them, from the initial hospitality they were shown.

Hosea to me was that "angel" conscious to Dutch (in contrast to Micah acting as the "devil" conscious), he's also the founding father of the Van Der Linde gang to boot. Hosea was very mature, logical, and displayed great wisdom, which he imparts to Dutch, Arthur, and the others. I felt bad that he was killed in that botched robbery in Saint Denis.

@@princessicy-princessofice7358 I know that Hosea’s not exactly a saint (heck even the Pinkerton’s aren’t model citizens either, namely Milton and Ross).
It’s just that some characters of the Van Der Linde gang were starting to question their current path in life. While it’s true that some didn’t get that shot in redemption, but that fact that they were starting to see the error of their ways makes it pretty clear that they are not completely irredeemable or monsters.
Plus the Van Der Linde gang are villain protagonists anyways, so we can only see things from their side.

The worst thing Dutch ever did was stop listening to Hoseas input. Hosea didn’t let things get out of hand and was level headed and didn’t let his emotions get in the way. He realized that certain actions had certain consequences for them but they were a good team together. Dutch on the other hand knew how to plan and keep moral high but he let his greed, anger and vengeance get the best of him in the end. He thought he could kill anyone and take anything he wanted and get away with it and he thought that he didn’t need Hoseas 2 cents to do it. Once Hosea died, everything started to go to hell.
he stopped listening to Hosea and started listening to Micah and that's where it all went wrong

The assault on the Braithwaite manor was one of my favourite missions of the whole game. Mostly because of the majority of the gang's heavy hitters being present in the fight. It's a shame that there weren't more missions like this with the whole gang.
I like to think that Micah stayed behind because he’s an excellent shot, and Dutch KNEW that he can single-handedly defend the camp from any enemies.
Hosea is what if Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars decided to join the Consortium.
Just the cutscenes alone add so much cinematic charisma to this world. Bravo R*

@@davidwarren2771 I think that Sadie is an incredibly underused character. At the start of the game she is supposed to be a weak and submissive woman but in Chapter 3 then all of a sudden she is fucking Terminator. We didn't see her character's development, we were only told that it had taken place. Very bad, Rockstar.

This is what I don't get. Milton told us that after Micah got back from Guarma, he was a "good boy" ever since by being a rat to the gang. What I don't understand is if that was the case for Micah, then there is no way he spoke to Milton about the job in Blackwater or Saint-Denis. It could not have been Molly because Milton had told us that she was just too drunk to speak at all and she put the gang above herself so they let her go. Assuming Milton lied so there could be bloodshed within the gang and he was smart enough to know that Hosea was the morale booster of the group, there is no possible way that he would know that the gang was already fighting within themselves.
So my questions, was there an actual rat? Or was Milton smarter than we think?
Cause if you think about it, Arthur knew that the Blackwater job went terribly for everyone and Micah was the one who pushed for it to be done. Micah was kinda gone in the beginning of the game so he can make it up to Dutch, so was he speaking to Milton before Guarma? If anything, there was no reason for Milton to lie cause he had the upper hand on Arthur when he had his gun drawn on him. He certainly did not think he was gonna die to Abigail or a weakened Arthur.
Seems like Rockstar had some plot holes within the game.

It made me so mad to hear him trash arthur in the epilogue to that lady up north. Says arthur was a bad man. John says that after Arthur sacrificed himself to save john and his family.
Sir Speaks Alot, maybe micah was telling all along but not giving him (milton) everything wanted. Now micah might be doing everything they want him to do now.
I’m replying to u a year later but I think Micah had planned on ratting on them for awhile before he actually did because if you go to his camp site near strawberry earlier in the game you can find some weird shit like Dutch’s bounty poster and stuff like that and by the time the end is near he is so far in Dutch’s ear that Dutch is willing to go along with everything he says which was probably his plan all along since he found out he could so easily manipulate him into doing whatever he wanted (by chapter 6 he asks Arthur if he was followed and convinces Dutch there’s a rat within the gang in order to draw attention away from himself). Also if you listen in camp around I believe chapter 4 you can hear him talking to Dutch about the location of the money in black water and asks to get the money and also asks Dutch if he will think about it which he agrees to think about. I think his whole plan all along was to make as much money with the gang as he could rat on them and then run away with all of the money for himself based on everything that is shown for us to see in the game.

Hosea was a bad mother fucker. Kinda a pansy, but a warrior poet too. If he and Dutch are the same age, then they diverged violently when they both realized the "West" was gone. Hosea seemed like he wanted to go down quietly. Dutch wanted to burn it all down in protest. I felt like neutral Arthur was too shaken by his own life to pick between the two. And yet, Dutch, Arthur, and Hosea all still held some semblance of belief that honor had some value.
I love that you kept the music cinematics in here still, probably the best game experience ill ever have!

I remember first trying to gauge who Hosea was: In the same hunting mission he says "Please don't leave [like john did]" and "There's no really getting out of this life" yet in the same trip he says "Thinking about getting out? You should think about it. Maybe you'll have a choice one day." And while it later becomes clear Hosea is quietly trying to get people to leave and to seek a better life, I think this early conversation summarized his own conflicted belief about whether it's possible. I don't think he ever believed it for himself. And in the end, it wasn't true for most of them. But hey, it's still worth a try,

Something I found quite peculiar is that when we're first introduced to Javier, Hosea says that him and Arthur were the two best fit men they got, but what about Dutch and Micah or some other men in the gang? Like I know this was just a way to introduce Javier, but I still find it odd that in this context, Arthur and Javier were the two most fit men at the time
