Even after completing Dark Souls II twice, this intro still amazes me.."with the strength of Lords, they challenged the Dragons". One of the best scenes in gaming.
"and the Furtive Pygmy, so easily forgotten." always loved that line. initially i thought that meant that the Lords were cocky individuals but in reality, The Furtive Pygmy kept his soul a secret and it wasn't hard for such a small human. "Easily" was the key word in my opinion
If you look closely, the pigmy's flame is small and stutters. This is indicative that you, the player, are the furtive pygmy with nothing but a tiny flame to help you but unlike the other hollows who've gone mad, you still have the light with you, however small. It's called "Dark Souls" because each player is THE Dark Soul in their own world and all these worlds are connected...Dark Souls...
That's an interesting way to look at it! the only thing is Darkstalker Kaathe mentions the Pygmy being the chosen undead's ancestor. possibly did inherit the Dark Soul from him though
Bill Misiura Well the Dark Souls is the Dark Soul regardless of what vessel it's in. The other lords never lost their flame and you have to take it from them, yet never have to find "the furtive pygmy". You beat Seath, Gwyn, Bed of Chaos and Nito, all the ones mentioned in the opening cinematic, save for the pygmy. Don't you need ALL the souls of lords for the Lordvessel? I'm assuming your mere presence around the lord vessel, or rather you placing it is enough for your Dark Soul to count without having to submit it by sacrificing your life. All in all, it just really seems to point towards the player. Unlike all the others who die and become hollow, you're the only one that returns...you're the only one that seems to turn back time at a bonfire. Lol to me, this is as obvious as Vegeta's attack on Cell in DBZ when he was having his kamehameha showdown with Gohan. People argued it was just a normal energy blast (as if any of this really matters but anyway) and I have for my say that the only attack Vegeta could have done to cripple Cell the way he did and leave him panting is a full blast Big Bang attack..."Well you didn't hear him yelling it" because he was trying to catch Cell by surprise? Lol I wouldn't call out my attack before I do it either.
@@pilkb7293 I mean the lore says it clearly: "with fire came disparity... life and death" Meaning that before that nothing died nor anything was technically alive. So he might just be the first of the dead literally
@@davyk515 He probably was inmortal in the sense he could not die of old age. But being scale-less made him vulnerable to die via being stabbed and other some such. The other dragons didn´t age but also had scales to protect them from damage
This is my favorite scene from all the games, just so historical and epic. Specially that part when music comes in and they start throwing lighting bolts.
OK, so let's take stock: the Witch of Izalith apparently had 7 daughters- you can see them standing around her in a circle at 1:25 and in a staggered line behind her at 2:06. We also know she had a single son, who would become the Ceaseless Discharge, who doesn't seem to be present here (he presumably had no real magic power like the Daughters of Chaos, beyond his curse). So we have Quelaag, Quelana, the Fair Lady, the unnamed Daughter of Chaos near the fog gate before the Bed of Chaos, and the dead body you can loot the Gold-Hemmed Black Set from that's guarded by the Ceaseless Discharge. That leaves 2 of the daughters unaccounted-for. I suggest that the two daughters were engulfed by the Bed of Chaos together with their mother, becoming the two spheres you have to hit on either side of the Bed to expose the heart where the Chaos Bug is. The fact that the orbs don't regenerate when struck even if you die and return to the fight supports this, suggesting that they're individual entities that you've permanently killed, rather than mere parts of the Bed that you've injured.
fionn coyne You know, I've never noticed that before. Still, I don't see any other reason for the Witch of Izalith to associate with them if they weren't her children. I mean, she has the Lord soul, so she's clearly infintely more powerful than them, and therefore wouldn't need them around unless she had some sort of connection with them. Ah well, I guess there's no right or wrong answers in Dark Souls :P
Something I find interesting is the fact that the ancient battle seems to be taking place in the same place as ashe lake. So was the new world build on top of the old world ?

In the 1990s... The world was great, shrouded by platforming games. A land of classics such as Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario 64. But then there was the First Person Shooter. And with the FPS, came Disparity. Bad and good, ok and not ok, And of course... repetition. Then, from the dark, the other FPS games came, and found the games of Lords within the FPS genre. Rareware, the first of the true FPS EA, and it's many licenses. Treyarch, the Lord of FPS, and it's faithful fans. and SEGA, so easily forgotten. With the strength of Lords, the three challenged the platforming genre. Treyarch's little kid fans beat the platforming games with unfair reviews. EA, weaved great storms of battlefield games. And Rareware unleashed an attack with golden eye and perfect dark. And Insomniac betrayed his own..... Thus began the 21st century. But soon the O.K games will fade, and only shit will remain. Even now, there are only Gems. And man sees not good games, but only cash ins. And most the companies now, carries the accursed Half-Ass sign......
At first I was like "Dark Souls ? Meh..." But then I saw this intro cinematic and I was like "OMFG !!!! I NEED THIS GAME IN MY LIFE !!!" I never stopped since then.
hate to say it, but this opening was much better than the opening to dark souls 2. i love the way it just seeps you in lore from the get-go. dark souls 2 was like "if you weren't paying attention in DS1, you are undead, you have this sign that means you are undead" the graphics were better in the DS2 opening but that was it. the story and music and lore telling in dark souls one's opening is the best i've seen in a souls series.
The opening in Dark Souls 2 isn't that much about lore, but about setting up the story more (viva foreshadowing) "You'll go hollow" "You'll be in the front of the gates, and you won't even know why". ec y both good imo
***** Actually not, since in the trailers etc and also the beginning of DS2 you can see that you're willingly jumping down to "Dark Souls" maybe for completing a goal you had in mind. But since many people who come to that land often forget what you were supposed to do and after time since you have the curse and can die as many times as you want, you forget your past. (examples of people who have forgotten their memories are the shopkeeper i Majula since he wants to go home but dosent know where that is. The guy who owns the Mansion in Majula who seeks for something that he doesnt remember. The only thing were doing is actually helping Emerald Herald since she is the one who says that you need to seek the king. But actually, we don't really know. Since this is a fact, many "pro" or "instense" gamers is trying to find a different way to complete the game or find secrets behind this mystery.
It's funny because almost NOTHING from the trailer seems to have anything to do with the actual game. Like who are those dudes with the masks? Were YOU one of them? Also, it seems kinda lame how they kept saying, "This IS the old location of this place, but it isn't". Like stop beating around the bush and just either say it or don't. IDK, something about that really annoyed me. And I hated the way EVERY SINGLE NPC all talked the same way, (acting like they had a case of amnesia and everything). The only NPC who was a bit different was Straid. Nobody on earth can try to talk me out of how I feel about this crap in the game. It's a damn shame because the core gameplay is quite fun.
Those are the manikin enemys. They were gonna keep the masks from the commercial except the owners of naruto threatened a lawsuit against from because they thought the mask was similar to a mask from the show/manga which is bullshit
Amazing how, to this day, this cutscene offers the most concrete lore in the series. Everything that happened before and after this cutscene can only be theorised, which is one of the many things I love about Dark Souls.
It is crazy too think it has been almost 10 years since this came out now. This game really inspired a lot of the gaming landscape for the better this decade.
i just noticed. Gwyn is using sunlight spear in this war, the miracle description says it too "In the war that marked the dawn of the Age of Fire, Gwyn wielded these rays of sunlight, which remains fierce even as they fade." yet he never uses it when you fight him, rather he has a firey (i would expect electric) sword and his grab attack is an explosion and not some sort of bolt like ornstein spear stab-grab. weird.
He's a mere husk compared to what he was. Sure, there's some muscle memory left that gives him some combat abilities like all those hollows out there, but things that require Faith and such would be too taxing and would burn out a body far more quickly than just swinging a sword around and running around (Or his body/mind is not capable of doing that anymore)(Btw, this is just speculation on my part, take this with a pinch of salt).
you guys are right, but i just find strange that he uses "fire" powers. even assuming he hollowed out and lost most of his powers, he still gained some in a non-descripted way, both his grab and sword are fire based. idk i just find it weird.
SanjiKunTheLoveCook Cinders implies Fire. Sunlight encompasses both fire and light, and according to most RPGs and Medieval Fantasies, light is one of the most powerful forces that encompasses all good, arguably. So looking at that context, Gwyn downgraded from Light and Fire to just Fire.
Has anyone noticed that when Nito is unleashing his Death and such, he looks like he's standing in the cemetery that leads from the main Firelink Shrine cemetery to the underground Catacombs and beyond? Maybe once Nito was done fighting he laid down and lowered himself into the depths that would lead to the catacombs and the tomb of giants.
The flow of time in Lordran is convoluted. Reality is tearing apart at the seams as the fire fades. This is evidenced by the bizarre shifts in landscape experienced by the player traversing fog walls. I seriously doubt that Sen's Fortress is right next to a church in the Undead Burg. The same can be said about the catacombs and especially the Tomb of the Giants.
@@combativeThinker that explains why undead burg and other cities are designed in such a way. Like who the hell would even design it? Paths going through houses where people live, a maintainance area under a bridge with open access to a house, only way in is through a sewer that for some reason run above most of undead burg.
Seath covered in blood, crushing the dragon scale and screaming at the sky while on top of a mountain of corpses with lightning in the background is the most metal shit ever.
imagine this: if Manus really was the first of the pygmies, and creator of the abyss(which is like an angrier form of The Dark) and ALL humanity(the item and soul) split form his Dark Soul. That means that we fight him when he was crazy and had how much of his power split from him? How powerful must he have been with the full Dark Soul? Powerful enough to influence The Dark itself with his anger and corrupt it into the Abyss. No wonder Gwyn feared him so much, imagine having to fight him at full power when he was calm.
I like how when they introduce the lord souls you can hear bits and pieces of each of their themes: you can hear the vocals from nito's theme when they show him and the harp from bed of chaos when they show the witch of Izalith.

Kaathe tried to stop that which will always happen Gwyn faded like his flame. The chosen undead matters not their choice simply determined when the world died, not if.
This 4 minutes is still mastery storytelling. There is so much which the trailer says, and even more it doesnt. Where did the Pygmy go during the war? Why is the dark arcursed and not seen as the power of a lord as well? This cinematic still gets me every time
The Dark Sign is a curse, not a gift. Every time you die, the Dark Sign takes away all your humanity and souls in exchange for reviving you. However, there is a catch. Each time you die, it strips your sanity slowly, and eventually becoming Hollow. A state where you become insane for all eternity, while death will not purge you of this curse. As for the Pygmy, I personally think Chosen Undead is the Pygmy.

It was just that a genocide in every sense of the word. The lords didn't try to communicate or share the world with the dragons. They just attacked with the mindset ''either we rule the world or they rule no in between''wich i think ultimately sealed their fate since i think the dragons existed to batle the abyss while the first flame absorbed the darkness within them before they would be corrupted.
This might change since Ringed city comes out.

What?
Daughters *of* Chaos, not necessarily the Witch of Izalith's daughters.
But it also says HER daughters of chaos, so it's heavily implied.
CipherOfHate They appear to be a different race, with the daughters being much smaller than her.
fionn coyne You know, I've never noticed that before.
You forgot the one that shows up to teach you some pyromancies when you've met specific requirements.
Something I find interesting is the fact that the ancient battle seems to be taking place in the same place as ashe lake.
So was the new world build on top of the old world ?
Yes, exactly, well percieved

The world was great, shrouded by platforming games.
A land of classics such as Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario 64.
But then there was the First Person Shooter.
And with the FPS, came Disparity.
Bad and good, ok and not ok,
And of course... repetition.
Then, from the dark, the other FPS games came, and found the games of Lords within the FPS genre.
Rareware, the first of the true FPS
EA, and it's many licenses.

First time watching this intro:
“Holy crap, are those the bosses I’m supposed to fight?”
Watching this after beating the game:
“Seath was a joke”
My vote for worst boss would be the Witch of Izalith (bed of chaos). Basically a platforming boss.
@@sliphstream4927 She's strong as a character, not as a boss
Good news: The bosses were nerfed (If it was Prime Gwyn it would be so OP i doubt it would be possible)
"What do you mean the hardest boss are the dogs with the Capra demon?"
You can only say that if you find it easy at SL1.
At first I was like "Dark Souls ? Meh..."
But then I saw this intro cinematic and I was like "OMFG !!!! I NEED THIS GAME IN MY LIFE !!!"
I never stopped since then.
the atmosphere of dark souls especially this cinematic reminds me of Berserk manga.
Miyazaki, the director of this and Demon Souls LOVES Berserk so theres tons of references and designs from it, Artorias was based right off of Guts.
wow i didn't know about that. glad to see a fellow fan in game design.
Imran Zakhayev In dark souls 2, the turtle dudes look strikingly like basuzo (I think that's his name?) albeit without the turtle shell
Well artorias was based on guts.
hate to say it, but this opening was much better than the opening to dark souls 2. i love the way it just seeps you in lore from the get-go. dark souls 2 was like "if you weren't paying attention in DS1, you are undead, you have this sign that means you are undead" the graphics were better in the DS2 opening but that was it. the story and music and lore telling in dark souls one's opening is the best i've seen in a souls series.
I couldn't even find a real story in DS2 to be perfectly honest.
The opening in Dark Souls 2 isn't that much about lore, but about setting up the story more (viva foreshadowing)
"You'll go hollow" "You'll be in the front of the gates, and you won't even know why". ec y
both good imo
Sound cut out halfway in wtf
Amazing how, to this day, this cutscene offers the most concrete lore in the series. Everything that happened before and after this cutscene can only be theorised, which is one of the many things I love about Dark Souls.
It is crazy too think it has been almost 10 years since this came out now.
This game really inspired a lot of the gaming landscape for the better this decade.
This narrator is awesome! Gives me chills.
i just noticed. Gwyn is using sunlight spear in this war, the miracle description says it too "In the war that marked the dawn of the Age of Fire,
Gwyn wielded these rays of sunlight, which remains fierce even as they fade." yet he never uses it when you fight him, rather he has a firey (i would expect electric) sword and his grab attack is an explosion and not some sort of bolt like ornstein spear stab-grab.
So looking at that context, Gwyn downgraded from Light and Fire to just Fire.
thebeyblademaniac
makes sense to me. thanks
Dani Flunky Cook sunlight spear? It's not lighting spear. Its a spear made of fire so yea I guess he always used fire power
I always find myself short of breath and grinning like an idiot when Seath starts to fucking yell like that.

Holy shit you too. I to feel this...
Has anyone noticed that when Nito is unleashing his Death and such, he looks like he's standing in the cemetery that leads from the main Firelink Shrine cemetery to the underground Catacombs and beyond? Maybe once Nito was done fighting he laid down and lowered himself into the depths that would lead to the catacombs and the tomb of giants.
well u know he help killing the tree which the dragon live on so yeah it something :D
@@FleyBlademode he's killing a dragon, you can see it move before he uses it
@@combativeThinker that explains why undead burg and other cities are designed in such a way. Like who the hell would even design it? "Then, from the Dark, They Came. And found the Souls of Lords within the flame." So metal.

Did anyone find the Genocide of the Dragons, a little dark and frightening.
That and the fact that once they took the lord souls from the flame they removed the fire's fuel and it was only a matter of time before the fire would fade and their power along with it.
