Very impressed by the quality of this little camera. Great review as, as usual. I think there is definitely a place for 16X9 3D for users of VR headsets as it adds so much even if it isn't 180° image. Since the VR viewer doesn't have to jump through any hoops to view the 3D image, so why not use this little guy for everyday vlogging. Being a giveaway winner would be great!

Great Video as always Hugh. Count me in the excited group. I think a lot of people are missing the point of this camera which is fun little consumer camera to have fun shooting and instantly watching your 3d videos or viewing them in VR later. The stereoscopic effect should be superior to a VR 180 camera as it’s not limited by fisheye lens design as others have said. I hope to purchase this camera at some point as there probably won’t be a VR180 cam as sharp as this for a similar price plus the workflow as you have demonstrated is pretty easy. Again thanks for the work you put in and most importantly for sharing that work as well!

I have vuze 3d 4k 360 camera from 2016, that also offer stereoscopic 3d. Based on everything i have seen on sample videos on yt and read about qoocam ego. I would say ego is better in everything execpt for one thing and that is vuze is not just 3d but also vr, qoocam is not vr just 3d. If only qoocam would be at least 180 it would make a huge difference. Now it is just a big screen. Im surprise that after so many yrs it has not come any new vr 3d camera after vuze. But i would say the 3d effect in qoocam seem to be better than in vuze.
I just got the camera today. It's a great camera, but it drives me crazy that RUclips no longer has a quick checkbox to tell it the video is 3D. I'll try FFMpeg and see if I can get it to work.

I think it is an advantage it is not 180vr. For 180 VR you need a super wide lens, to get the 3D effect there, you have to get very close to the subject wich gives other problems. I am very interested in this camera, hope it has some kind of exposure lock.
Do submit feature request to Kandao. Right now I told them they need manual exposure but apparently not many people want it. So more ppl request it more chance it will be in the next update.

Thank Mic. That is direct output from my unit. I review it in RUclips VR - it actually look good. Same as direct sideload on Meta Quest. I am wondering if that deal to the different focus distance :(

Same i can see the misalignment in anaglyph view on youtube but i couldn't notice any problem in 3d on the quest. Weird

The anaglyph version served by youtube works very poorly under my viewing conditions (27'' screen, red/cyan glasses).

Do you have a video showing you to edit side by side footage from the EGO using DaVinci Resolve? I know I can edit the footage as a 3840x1080 2D video, then add meta tags using FFMPEG, but I'd like to add some 3D clips and tinker with the convergence like you did in the other editing videos, but those were VR 180 based and Spacial format.

Videos cannot be exported from QooCam (Firmware 2.5.8) to the album of a Samsung S8 or Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 in the QooCam app (App 4.3.1).
Samsung S8 only copies empty directories. Galaxy Tab A8 crashes before exporting files. What's wrong?

Hello. I want to buy a Qoocam EGO camera for shooting stereo photos and videos in SBS format. I have a large archive of such photos from film times. I watch them on 3D TV. But I have not yet found an application that correctly displays them on Oculus GO & Quest 2. How can I view SBS photos and videos in a VR helmet?
It just work if it is EGO footage - straight out of camera!
The camera does not shoot at a constant frame rate, dipping below 60.00 fps many times during a clip. But I can still losslessly trim and merge clips to make videos. They have a major update and I still did not have time to cover the update. But I should. I am trying to combine a AI tutorial with it as I use depth map a lot in create generative video art and trying to use EGO to do so. Still polish the workflow. I use EGO a little bit different than most people - I use it for 3D estimation to use in AI :)

And gimbal work as this is lighter than a phone. I use my super old DJI but really, any gimbal.
@@hughhou Thank tyou so much! I had a look at the local 2nd hand offerings, and somebody was selling an M2 Crane for peanuts, so I obtained that one! It's in perfect working order, so I'll give it a spin tomorrow :) It really seems like a good gimbal for the likes of the Ego and the Insta360 Evo.
Now if only Qoocam would produce something like the Ego for VR180 eh? I suppose they could pretty much just produce the same camera with fisheye lenses.I still love the Evo, but I feel I need something slightly better, but not as crazy as the Z1.

Great Video on the EGO 3d. Quick question, for videos you recommend using FFmpeg, what do you recommend for EGO 3D photos? Do I inject 3D meta data?

@@hughhou I tried to view a EGO 3D photo on the Quest 2, finally used Pigasus VR Media Player to view it. The native media player didn't display it correct with the aspect angles - it wanted 180 or 360. Anyway Pigasus VR Media Player works for me.

None of those. You should check out the Canon EOS R5C and our VR series. Evo is hard to find and EGO is not VR180
Hi everyone. Hope someone can help me with my question about QooCam Ego. I recently got one and followed Hugh's instructions here to upload the video's on RUclips. However I do not see the video's in 180 in my Quest 3 on RUclips VR. The video's are in 3D but are framed. That also happens when I sideload the video's and watch them on Quest in the media browser. Any idea what I am doing wrong?
EGO is a 3D Spatial Video camera NOT a VR180 camera - so it won't be 180, just 3D.

So what I saw is not like 1080p, more like 720p (interlaced readout results in such a soft jagged picture)
What do you mean not 1080P? You mean the image quality or technical render? Did you set the resolution in 4K first?
@@hughhou I mean video quality similar to old Fujifilm X10 (2011). IMHO, them use old technique to convert 4000 pixel columns to 1920p that product soften and pixelated video. It doesn't looks good on 24" screen, but it's ok in Oculus Go.

I believe you need to convert them to Lume pad format. So using RUclips 3D is easier approach with LeiaTube

Thank you for your excellent review. I cannot wait to use it personally! But I see there is a BIG vertical misalignment on the video. This is NOT acceptable in stereo movies. Is this a settings error, or someone did any mistake?

No this is how the camera is captured and calibrated. I will suggest to watch it in a VR headset using RUclips VR and judge the quality there.
I second Franco’s comment. Hugh, this is not a matter of viewing method. The cameras are misaligned, and that is a very big issue. One camera is shooting higher than the other, and this is one of the biggest ways people get headaches from 3D. Without fixing it, THIS. PRODUCT. WILL. FAIL.

Where can I download the "QooCam EGO's RUclips Metadata Injector" app? I've tried to upload the 3D .mp4 video from the Qoocam Ego, but RUclips doesn't recognize it as a 3D video, and I can't play the anaglyph video on my PC. I've also tried some FFMPEG commands but none of them produced a video that's OK for RUclips...

3D Anaglyph review is always default display for 3D content on RUclips. But it should allow you to switch tho. Are you on chrome?

They have done it. Now photos are aligned automatically, and videos require one additional step in the camera. Although in my camera (bought about 10 days ago) vertical misalignment is almost non-existent.
I will wait for a company to make a Vr180 camera (that I can afford). What drives my wish for this is to have the ability to make video and photos I can experience in my Meta Quest 2. So many people have bought these devices that it boggles my mind that no company is making vr180 cameras marketed specifically to the users of Quest 2

The various RUclips apps I've used (Chromecast, Xbox One, the one that came with the TV…) show the video as SBS, and I have to manually tell my (passive) 3D TV that it's SBS.

Yes. But in Meta Quest 2 it looks okay. Check it there in headset as that is the device it target on.

@@hughhou You're right, the misalignment was acceptable in my Oculuc Quest (Original version) I could see it being an issue on longer videos but bot the length of your typical RUclips video or a short home movie. Looks very promising. I wish my Qoocam 4K had this image quality, though.
I completely agree. Flat 3D is such an absurd step back. It only survives in cinemas. This should have been 3D180 if anything, especially with there being no such consumer camera at the moment.

One more vote for VR180. Not going back to narrow 3D, or to overkill 360. If nothing better than the Evo comes out in 2022, I'll probably just get another Evo...
The Quest 2 is like having a cinema screen, so I think it still works. I thought I wouldn't like the small window, but I actually enjoyed it, and found the 3D effect works better than with VR 180 for me. As a photographer, this will give me control of composition, something I think a lot of people will like.
What would you suggest for a 3d camera that I want to use for live video streaming so I don't need waterproof and needs to be wired power for constant video streaming but also don't need to be insanely high 12k resolution but decent quality
Yes the vertical anaglyph misalignment in this video is terrible. Check this review for example for anaglyph samples with the camera without this problem. ruclips.net/video/pbF0PdnH1Yw/видео.html But this other review also notes that the default alignment has the entire scene forward of the screen. I wonder if that is the case with the release camera. Hugh's video seems to have the same issue too. Also this other review says that early versions of the camera had slight missync issues. I wonder if that has been fixed. It is crazy that a 3D camera maker doesnt know about this kind of stuff. But at least the image quality looks very nice -- especially for video compared with the W3.
Have you see it in RUclips VR of this video? I won't strictly based on anaglyph and technical alignment. This is targeted on RUclips VR and Oculus TV.
Agree--in my tests, I have needed to adjust for vertical disparity as well as re-converge because the video comes out converged at infinity. This isn't how rectilinear 3D needs to be presented for viewing on RUclips 3D and Oculus TV. It needs to behave like a traditional 3D movie. Kandao has the feedback--hopefully there will be an update to address at least the convergence issue, and maybe even a way to recalibrate to deal with the vertical misalignment.

It won't play right on handheld Android devices.

Watch the 3D videos on my channel, they all play excellently on Android devices.

The approach pointed out in this video is the latest RUclips suggestion. Especially AV1 start rolling out. Yes, the flag might not be comparable on older Android devices - but it also does not transcode or compress your source video. I know how to do Handbrake. But the encoder is a potato encoder - it really hurt the image quality.
@@hughhou Sorry, if you set the bitrate high enough on Handbrake, no degrading will appear. Also it's not about older and newer Android devices, it's about setting the flag corretly, that's all.
it's actually not bad at all regarding image quality BUT..... unfortunately the vertical alignment of the 2 frames (left & right) is not good, but with a difference of already 3 mm on my 19" labtop screen. now imagine on a 50" TV screen..... unwatchable because our eyes can accommodate horizontally to 3 D images, but NOT if vertically not exactly superposed.
I do think it is the camera itself which is not correctly matching the 2 half images. In such cases one should definitely use a video postedition program (i use Magix) which allows to correctly align the vertical discrepancy between both half frames.
Also, another point is the horizontal alignment : it is actually superposing the images on infinity, therefore there is no "window effect" but everything nearer than infinity is popping out of the TV / labtop screen and also therefore your initial "selfie" video is even more unconfortable than if the images would place all objects/people at about 3meters on the screen level. This also can be done in appropriate video editing software. Obviously there will be some image content lost, but the better watchable result is worth it, I think.
I hope my comment might be useful to some 3D freaks like myself used to watch my 3D videos on roughly 50" screen on my TV 🙂
On my 55" TV, the vertical misalignment can be measured in centimeters in some segments.
@@AlyssaNguyen exactly, the bigger the TV screen the worse the misalignment becomes... in fact, in their software they should include the possibility to align the image horizontally AND vertically. Horizontal alignment allows to control the infinity points never to become larger than human eyes distance (roughly 6-7 cm). It's a pity because the idea of a small compact 3D video camera is excellent, but those people didn't think about all the risky elements involved.
4k per eye is actually 5.7k，count the pixels you'll know, it's exactly 5.7k,as insta360 EVO does
Except that it's a higher resolution than the EVO. It's exactly 8000 pixels wide in photo mode, so that's 8K.
This is actually 1080p per eye 4K in total :(
@@hughhou 1080p per eye is roughly the equivalent to a 4k VR180. You see roughly a 1080x1080 part of a 2160x2160 image given a 90 FOV (the roughly referring to the FOV not being square, the video not filling the FOV and some headsets having better than 90 degree FOV) which is why the video looks really decent.
For stills the 4000x3000 per eye resolution should be superb its a shame my Quest 1 can't play videos at that res so can't check what a slide show video would look like.
Would still miss the "surround-ness" of VR180 though.
It is a awesome concept to have old school 3D brought back for modern VR! My big disappointment for now is it seems this doesn't work with PSVR? That is a large chunk of people that can't enjoy this content in 3D despite having a VR headset. I hope there is an update by the time the PSVR2 ships. Or maybe a way to convert it to be viewable as a 180 video format with limited FOV? I think a lot of Playstation owners with VR would be a great target audience for this type of consumer level 3D camera.
PSVR can not access RUclips VR app? I tho it does - as long as it link to RUclips you should be able to see 3D on PSVR - unless I am wrong (I don't own PSVR)
I have this problem. The RUclips VR app on my PS4 does not seem to display Qoocam EGO vidoes in 3D. Does anyone know of a fix?

3-D projectors are still being made. 3-D Blu-rays are still being released. I still have my 2018 Sony Bravia XBR65Z9D TV and it has excellent 3-D. I’m going to pick up a Qoocam Ego and will watch the 3-D videos I make on my big screen!

Bought and returned Qoocam Ego: 1) Battery life barely 45 min 2) Overheated immediately 3) New stabilization firmware marginal 4) Constant loss of wifi connection 5) Buttons and window swiping terrible 6) Instructions poor.
The resolution is so bad... 4-5 years ago I just used two Samsung Note 4s and used seethrough tape to attach them together and record with them 4K. Yes it means you need to sync and fix in Resolve (zoom a tiny bit with one) but the results were fantastic.
Did you set the resolution to 4K or 2160P in 60fps? Did you watch it on Meta Quest 2 using RUclips VR app? On browser it default 720P. You need to set them.
The resolution looked fine in the Quest, better than any consumer VR 180 camera.
Hugh! You should know better than to do stereo shots too close! Gives people a bad impression of the EGO. Why is there vertical misalignment? It doesn't speak well for Qoocam quality control. All cameras should have perfect vertical alignment. If the one I ordered has that much misalignment I will be very unhappy! Macro 3D is not possible with a fixed lens separation that far apart.
I am just trying something news lol. The distance vertical disparity only happen in very close focus like in 30 - 40mm in the intro scene. In recommend focus distance like infinite the vertical disparity is not that bad in distance - but it still has disparity. I hope the software can fix it soon.

Thank you for the video. However this cameras has absolutely abhorrent sensors and dynamic range.. every single highlight is blown, unwatchable. This is mobile phone camera quality of 15 years ago.. absurd.

Vertical alignment is way off. This should all be reprocessed. Infinity should be dead flat even level.

even though the image quality of each left & right is excellent, the 3D vertical alignment is simply AWFUL.... 3 mm difference between the 2 half images. that is totally inacceptable. imagine how much more difference this means on a 48" 3D TV screen ?!.... Producing terrible headache to any viewer...
of course, you can put the videos through an editor an improve the alignment, then reprocess into a new correctly aligned MP4 file BUT that means QUALITY LOSS obviously.
I don't get it. Zero immersion, and the effective resolution in the little view box (viewed in Quest 2) feels no better than 5.7K VR180 - no wonder, since it's just a quarter of the resolution.

Good review, except you name the quest TOO MUCH, even when using ffmpeg you say to open ffmpeg in quest instead windows, which is non-sense. Do they pay you? VR is much more than the quest, which is only a basic VR headset. But people like you speaking as if it were the only VR headset is crazy. Just simply say VR headsets, don't give them more publicity.
