The Quest 3 device and lenses are greatly improved over the quest 2. The new pancake lenses in the quest 3 has a much larger sweet spot, and no magnification rings that caused those annoying god rays. Increased resolution and better lenses, make for a much clearer image. There are still reasons that it might be blurry however. IPD, limitations to the device, vergence accommodation conflict, dry eyes, and needing glasses or the main reasons. Check out the full video to find the tips to help.

Did you get, or planning on getting the Quest 3? Check out this video playlist on VR and Eyes to learn more!: rb.gy/wqeano
I was planning on upgrading, because I love the sound of better lenses, but the lack of software/decent games is giving me pause, plus I barely use the Quest2.
@@danw3735 I had the same feelings. Try to find someone that has one so you can try it.
I bought Q2 last year (or so). My son had one. I bought a Q3 and it’s much clearer with adjustable IPD (mine is large at 73mm!). It is also more comfortable to wear than Q2 out of the box. I use it more than I did the Q2. Mixed Reality is quite interesting & easy to set-up.
I wear glasses so thinking of getting inserts and zyber headstrap & eventually their neck battery. I am 60 yo & into electronics/EE.
I plan on giving my daughter my old Q2 so the family can have VRChats no matter where we live.
I got one! It's awesome! 512GB !!!
Great video mate
No
@DrEyeGuy i really don't understand why no producer says about how to measure the eye distance and I didn't know about it before now. Thanks hugely, because no any RUclipsr talking about VR take in serious consideration this and don't explain how important it is.
Huge thanks for the video and the free app link. Really!
Moreover neither the VR producers give a real tutorial about this to help the user feel more comfortable and just kick the user in the VR experience without giving them a proper tutorial, it's kinda sad and explains a lot why many people don't feel comfortable with VR.
Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU.
0:44 that transition, wow
Very cool to see this broken down from the perspective of an opthamologist. I recently upgraded from The Quest 2 to the quest 3 and notice for me a significant increase in clarity. I've been switching back and forth and anytime I go back to my Quest 2, I wonder how I was able to use it for all those years as I had it since launch. It's one of those ignorance is bliss situations because if you don't know any better it's just fine but once you use the quest 3, the Quest 2 is a blurry mess. I've even been working in VR now using the Immersed app as the clarify is finally good enough to read documents.
I love Immersed!
Can’t wait to get my prescription lenses. Hopefully they’ll help with the eye fatigue I get after 4-5 hrs.
@@RalstigRacing yeah I've been hooked. I have bad attention issues and work from home so it's been super helpful to keep me focused. Excited for the future of this tech! 🤓
@@Paulie8K Same here! I got this instead of an additional monitor. I will also be traveling for the holidays, I figure it would be great as I'll be able to bring my office with me.
(I'm a bookkeeper, and I have a 4 monitor setup at home.) It's tough working while traveling as I usually end up with 2 monitors at most.
@@RalstigRacing O cool. I have a triple 1440P 27" setup I use for both my remote job and gaming. I work for a Software company in Project Management so I have to juggle between Immersed and my setup just because I tend to be on a fair bit amount of client calls with camera on. Days where I don't have many calls on the books is where I can spend a fair bit of time in Immersed which is nice. My gf is also an Accountant. CPA for a private equity firm so I know how rough the first few weeks of the month closing the books can be. Good luck!
He's actually an optometrist, not an opthalmologist.
I've only had my Quest 3 about 2 weeks now, but I'm extremely happy with it. Can't say I've noticed any chromatic aberration, except maybe at the very extreme edges of the lenses with high contrast shapes. I had an Odyssey+ for years, so even on the Quest 3's worst day, it's much clearer than the O+ ever was.
agreed!
Happy with it but the apps need a upgrade resolution
I noticed some shaky lighting in assassins creed im sing air link with good pc
You could use mobile with that??
Thanks for that clear explanation. I was wondering about whether I was focusing near (at the lens) or far. I'd still like to understand how multi-focal contacts (or multi-focal cataract lenses) would work in VR.
Thank-you for making this!
Very helpful. Thanks
thanks! this helped a lot! I did the eye pupil thing and shoved my glasses in it and its relatively crystal clear now. Super strange needing glasses in it as a near sighted person but what you described makes sense, my vision gets blurry at about 2-3 feet
Same, it is such a struggle needing glasses for a Vr that is shoved into your face..
@@spectral_blue3529 you can order custom lens as long as you have your prescription, it’s a game changer.
You're advice on pupillary distance was perfect, I tried the glasses on app, and then called my vision center to confirm what my pd was, and the glasses on app was spot on, dropped a like 👍
Thanks doc, love this! Should be a must watch by everyone.
Thanks! It helped to use it more correctly.
hey! Thanks so much for making this video. I'm new to the VR world and put it off for years because my vision is so bad... astigmatism and can't really see a foot in front of my face, lol. I also wear a 0.5 prism in my readers, and 1.0 prism in my distance glasses. Your video helped me understand why I should wear my distance glasses in my Quest 3 to help prevent blurriness. Thanks again!
This was super helpful.
awesome thank you doc!
Thank you so much for the great video. I learned a lot.
Thank you! I try to put as much education/detail I can in a video. Some people like it, some people don't. Thanks for commenting!
This is a fantastic video great info!
The one thing ive found to help change my focus in vr is to relax and very slightly cross my eyes just until you feel the image double. It sort of resets my brain and whatever im looking at is what it default tries to focus on. Helps alot with menus and things that pop up etc. Also having the center of the display be further away then look towards the object with your eyes first then your head, helps track and bring it into focus rather then your eyes trying to immediately adjust to it.
Great info!
This was very helpful I’ve been trying to be aware of taking care of my eyes in vr and was wondering if it’s just the question 2 or my eye distance is just not in any of the sweet spots so your helping me consider the upgrade.
Thanks for this video. I have no problems so far with my new Quest 3. Video lens quality is very clear and a big improvement over my older Oculus Rift S VR headset. I will keep your suggestions in mind should I do run into blurry problems with the Quest 3.
Great video doc. I’m an optician and agree with all your comments. I just ordered lenses for my Q3 and hope it helps. Keep the tips coming.
Thnx for the info! What kind of strap are you using? Regards, Ron
Thank you, one thing I keep my mind on is making sure I blink, thats always helped me a lot, but the thing id never given a though was the vergance accommodation conflict, It makes total sense, to try and help me with this is while im playing a game, when I get to parts of a game where I get a few seconds I look all around the screen but not focusing on things, this has reduced head aches to almost zero, I also feel my eye muscles have become stronger, as when I first started looking around I would get a little muscle ache, now I get nothing. Thanks again for your time on this video, helped me understand a lot.
thanks for the alert about eye irritations
I ordered some reloptix lenses today. I can’t wait to play with them. I’ve always found it difficult with VR as I have to wear my glasses. Being able to get the lenses closer to my eyes is going to be a big help I think. 🤞🏻
Thanks so much for posting this. I’ve got glasses to see in the distance but they’re too big to fit inside the quest. Like you said, I had actually thought I didn’t need them because the device was so closeup, yet things were still blurry. This video certainly answered my questions. Now I just need to find out wear to get the prescription lens for it.
With an IPD of around 74-75, Ive never had a good time with VR. But the quest 3 is perfect! I set it to max, and I can see clearly from edge to edge on both eyes 😊
Wow, finally, you get a quest 3. Congrats, man. So how do you feel about it. Do you have any reviews and tips for having a better experience in quest 3? What do you think about bonicular overlap on quest 3 compared to quest 2. I think i noticed it more in Quest 3 for some reason.
This was fascinating and very informative, thanks.
Awesome video 🎉 With my quest2 and prescription lenses it is still blurry, it improves only if holding it with my hands at a specific position that I loose using it normally. I understand that the quest3 with its new lens and better setup will improve my experience even if not perfect. Thanks a lot !
Great Video! I have trifocal lenses for daily wear, reading glasses, and computer glasses. What are your thoughts on using the daily wear type vs computer? I'm guessing the distance scrip in the trifocals are best.
Been updated 🎉🎉🎉 pass through is clear 🎉
At first when I put on my quest 3 for the first time, I was very sad that I could see the pixels, it was like grainy looking, but after a while I got used to it and everything looks great now. But I think my quest 3 was faulty cause it started having lines in the display that were like very hard to see but still very visible in white environments.
Thank you for the idea for the dish soap on the quest three lens because now it doesn’t fog anymore
This is one of the coolest VR explanation videos. I actually learned about my eyes haha
Thank you so much for saying this... I really do appreciate it.
Fascinating video. New sub as I’m new with a Q3 and new to VR as well.
I’m monocular (since I was little) and have been wondering how much of the effect of VR that I’m missing out on. I describe using my Q3 as looking at a screen through a toilet paper tube but the effect disappears after I get going. So how much am I missing out on? And how important is PD for me?
Great video! I am stealing this for my corporate XR users/trainers. Every point is valid for knowing on any XR device.
Awesome! Thank you!
I believe many people saying quest 3 is blurry is complaining about the pass through being low resolution and has not of noise.
What is noise

Thanks! It's been awesome doing these videos.
Good day from Snowy Sweden! I have a question, if I may? My optician has consistently measured my PD at 65mm, but when I used the Quest Pro or various apps, it always came to 68mm. Which one should I trust? Could it be a convergence issue when the PD's are measured in different scenarios?
Had to wait for my prescription lenses inserts for Q3, before using them VR was slightly blurry. Now with the lenses everything is fine. Might be that a lot of people do not know their IPD or know that they need prescription lenses.
This is an amazing video! Thank you so much for this. I’ve gone from Vive when ya had to manually adjust the lenses to match your eyes to the psvr2 that has the auto adjusting and I got contact lenses so I could use them purely for VR. Been wanting to get a quest 3 but wasn’t sure how the focus and adjustment worked. Now I do. Thanks heaps for this 😁 sucks that they don’t automatically adjust. But ah well. Is there a testing/setup thing in the quest 3 for that? So when you first put it in ya can go through them to make everything look good?
Thanks!
Yes, there is a setup at the beginning, but it's pretty minimal.
cant wait to get this amazing headset
With regards to glasses you answered every question I wanted answering. So now I don't have to ask them .. thanks dude 👍
Awesome! Glad I could help!
I just got some Hons magnetic prescription lenses. The clarity is great, but I feel that as they clip within the rim of the Quest 3 lenses, they actually reduce the size, at least on first glance, of the Quest 3 lenses.
Does that really matter when your eyes are so close to them?
Also, they touch just under my eyebrows, so have to adjust the eye relief back one step.
I never had any of these issues with my Quest 2. Maybe clipping the lenses over the Quest 2 lenses was a better solution?
you sir have knowledge.
Im so glad i found your channel . I tell my eye doctor about how triggeri g my vision is and they just increase my perscription i literally have to wear glasses from cvs because the lenses they prescribe are always too strong. Im going to look into the eye drops
Hello Doctor! I have strabismus with a lazy eye on the side. I began to work with concentration to bring my lazy eye when concentrating toward te center... Do you think VR may help me to deal with my strabismus or cause it to be more gentle? thank in advance!
Your quest videos are great! Has anyone else noticed spots on their lens that seem to be blurry almost like a permanent fog spot? I noticed one on my left lens on the right side. It's not the end of the world but a bit annoying when you notice it.
Yes! And no matter how I clean them they look foggy!
Yes! So annoying!
I discovered my guess a PD was off and I was wearing the incorrect glasses the whole time. Thank you for a great video!
Can you please will it damage my eyes using this thing? thank you! Subscribed
No offence meant, Dr EyeGuy. But simply because of RUclips's strange recommendation choices, this is the first time watching one of your video's. Firstly, what a fantastic quality video - and a big compliment to your amazing editing skills. I was one of the best video's I ever watched for both information & enjoyment. But my question comes from STILL owning the original Oculus RIFT. So when I move the (manual) PD adjuster on the RIFT, it tells me in the headset, that my clearest view is a PD of 49 (it's lowest possible setting). But when the Quest 3 first came out - some Channels stated that the lowest PD setting was 53. But now a lot of other Channels like yours are now stating that the very LOWEST setting if actually 58, not 53. So my question is simply if I know my PD is 49 (or possibly even lower?) - then would you say as an eye specialist, that this automatically makes the Quest 3 a NO-GO for me?
I have Ambliopia in the right eye. Is the ipd relevant to me on quest 3 ? Also can you give some tips for not having blurry vision on the left eye ? Thanks !
Awesome video dude, incredibly thorough. I actually just clicked the video based on the thumbnail (obviously did it's job), and got half way through and thought, damn this guy should be an eye doctor lol. Then read your name and you mentioned it later on. I actually ordered prescription lenses online for my Q3, but I figured reading would be best and not distance, so may have to send those back. Will have to test it out! Thanks for the tips, I learnt quite a bit - Thank you!
Thank you for the awesome comment! So glad this video could help. I love making these types of videos.
Don't forget to clean the front passthrough cameras with a soft cloth! Sometimes they can get fingerprints on them and become blurry as well
With the far focal distance, it sounds like the custom lenses I just ordered which have the ADD power were the incorrect choice?
i had the pico 4 for 2 weeks and i was not happy cause of the sharpness and clarity. bought the meta 3 and instanlty saw a difference. worth the price upgrade.
What about the darkening around the edges of the lenses? I just got my quest 3 and as soon as I was in a bright environment, I couldn't stop noticing the dark edges. Looks like there is a vignette around the whole thing. My quest 2 was much more consistent.
Hey! My near sightedness is finally useful!
Have you noticed a glare effect on the Quest 3?
I owned the Q2 and with the Q3 I noticed a strong glare effect
I got Quest 3 lenses from VR Rock, only 39 bucks with free shipping. and I gotta say, the quality surpassed my expectations. I'm really happy I went with them.
Good to hear! I am testing these lenses out now.
I can see the between the lenses when I’m playing and I’ve set the setting to everything. Is there any way to fix this?
This is explained my headaches from it
Hey Doc, your right with the nausea because I just got my first pair of VR. My stomach felt awful
I just found your video, as I was looking for something to fix my blurry Q3. It's blurry only when i look straight, but if I look left, it's very sharp, so it looks like lens somehow disoriented, dislocated, and very difficult to position it to be sharp in the middle. Any idea?
Is it the far PD or near PD? Eye measure gives me both of these
What is your thoughts in using this in a office environment? Me
Use autocad and use 3 monitors but with this… life changer
I noticed with the default strap it wouldn't hold the headset close enough to my face- but if I pushed on the headset a bit and 'snugged it up' text got instantly less blurry. I ended up buying a halo style strap which has eliminated the problem. the default strap is awful, cannot believe they shipped with that.
My IPD is 54 according to my eye doctor, will have an issue with the Quest 3 since it only goes down to 58? I will be getting Rx lenses for the Quest 3 though and the lenses I found do go down to an IPD of 54.
Is there a reason the pass through mode doesn’t use the camera it uses to record stuff in pass through because it’s a better than the camera it uses right now
In my experience, simply taking a microfiber cloth and rubbing your lenses will lead to scratches VERY quickly. Get a LensPen and use the brush side extensively before you polish with the other side of the pen.
Great comment... you're right. If you don't have a super clean microfiber cloth.. you could scratch the lenses with the debri that's on there
Ensure your microfiber cloth is clean. I have been using microfiber for my camera lenses and in 4 years I have no scratch.
At the 11 minute mark, what head strap are you using?
4:30 i’m curious, once you’ve measured your pd with the glasseson app, where on the vr can you set the right number?
There’s a physical round dial under your left eye when you have it on
You can disable chromatic aberrations in system settings with side quest.
I remember doing it for my quest 2 so it should be there for the 3
Greetings from Kuwait. Doc I’ve preordered my VR lenses from VR Waves. I’m still waiting for them. I gave them the data from my progressive eyeglasses and not the close reading glasses, is that correct? And yes indeed I noticed blurring in Quest 3 when I look to the sides unlike Quest 2. But in general the image in Quest 3 is much sharper in the center. At the moment I’m wearing my progressive lenses in Quest 3.
Hi! Thanks for watching. Yes, your prescription for your progressives will work, as long as they are for normal progressives that you can wear full time, because it will have your distance prescription in there. So they will be able to take the prescription and make the lenses just fine.
I have progressive lenses in my glasses, but not sure if I should get the lense inserts?
Only if you need glasses to see 4-6 feet in the distance.
the funny thing about all these lens artifacts - chromatic aberration, reflections, etc - we've kinda been primed for it in flatscreen gaming
just about every modern game released in the last 10 or 20 years has lens flare you can toggle, chromatic aberration you can toggle, and all manner of other actual visual distortions and artifacts you can add for 'flavour'
now back here in present day on the cutting edge of tech, we can generate all those same lens effects naturally in the vr headset with no gpu overhead!
the future is now 🌈
Thanks for your reviews on the lenses. Just ordered a set of RELOPTIX. Excited for them to come in!
Did your lenses come in yet? How do you like them?
@@Cpnpd922 They come in today.
(My lenses were not a special order)
They had a massive influx of orders and ran behind on original estimates.
Thanks! And never keep Visine bottle next to superglue.
For me I used to wear an old pair of glasses that had a weaker subscription for distance and they broke then I didn't wear them and felt i could see pretty good and the Quest 2 had a little blur but it was more comfortable than wearing my glasses. For some reason maybe the bright screen wearing glasses hurt my eyes. When I got the PSVR2 and Quest 3 i noticed it was hard to see without my glasses. I got two pairs of prescription lenses for both headsets but asked for a little weaker so I can see farther but wouldn't hurt seeing things closer and from the bright screen. My issue now is when looking through the lenses I see clear but if I look at an angle through them it's blurry. I never thought i was supposed to get a base curve but I think that is why. I didn't think lens inserts had a curve but they may.
What about us with binocular overlap problem with Q3 which is massive...Q2 works fine for me, but Q3 is pain in the ass...
Do you have any idea what the vision distance is going to be on the apple vision pro ?
dont buy it
I'm near sighted and didn't think I had to wear my glasses. I just thought VR was slightly blurry, well, I put on my glasses the other day whilst wearing the Quest 3 and wow the clarity. I feel so dumb.
It’s also due to the adjustment not you just needing glasses
how do fix vignette on lens? i see dark lines outside and my vr is new?
The glasses on app is pretty good for measuring IPD. I am not so sure about the prescription extraction. I am still debating whether I want to buy a Quest 3. However, I do want to say that I appreciate this Quest 3 video from someone I trust.
My IPD was 74mm but quest 3 only goes to 70 😭
Update. I just ordered a Quest 3 and it is being delivered tomorrow. So, now I am really looking forward to the prescription lens inset review that is coming to this channel. I find contact uncomfortable so I rather not have to use them.
@@watcherworld5873Q3 is not as hype as some paid Meta YTubers are making it.
@@maradonna5956You should still be fine. Mine is higher than the max as well, at 73, but I play Quest 2 just fine with prescription inserts.
From my understanding, Quest 3 is more forgiving than Quest 2, since it has pancake lenses.
Hello, I'm a bit farsighted by age (44 now). I have a bit of strain when using the Quest3 and things get up close in my face. I don't wear glasses in normal life, because even reading is still without issues. It's only when I get the smartphone or book very close to my head that the letters get blurry. Is it an idea to get +1 lens for the Quest 3?
What are those glasses you mentioned are made specifically for VR. I ordered a non-headset specific sports-like VR glasses previously, as I switched from Vive to Oculus, but the lenses are so close to my eye lashes, that they constantly get smudged. So am interested in wire ones you showed. Thank you.
Some type of facial or medical tape over your eyebrows might help keep them from smudging.
I went from the HTC Vive to the Quest 3 and I had the problem, that it was very blurry. Later I realized I had to wear my glasses with the Q3 while the Vive worked just fine without them. I think its because the stenopic gap in the Vive.
Hmm. I focus pretty well, to a distance of about 6 feet, but I needed prescription inserts with the Quest 2.
The distance adjustment is a must-have for my long lashes.
For sure!
having both pico4 and q3, the q3 is little better visually, also color is a bit better too. both are super good upgrade from q2 pico3 vr.
On the Q2, I wore my 1.5 reading glasses and it was perfect. Tried this on the Q3 and very blurred! Looks like the focal distance is different on the 3. I use my Q3 without reading glasses
Thanks I started and still use the first oculus. I love it so much so my pc is way outdated now.
That said I do not understand how you can play a game if your vr headset is not plugged in.
As I use it now. Elite frontier is awesome, as well as as a horror creepy game I can not remember at this moment.
I also had all my friend do the VR roller coaster standing up. If you fix your legs to say a chair NP. Then take the chair away. They wobble like weebills wobbles.
VR is so good I love it. Hence why I want to upgrade my headset.
I am not sure if I need an up to date PC.
when i turn on my quest three, for some reason there is a red line across my vision. anyone know fixes?
Dude what about angle difference can I see more to the sites like in real life?
I constantly can see something in one of my eyes when in vr its the middle of the lenses and I set the pp correct I've set the distance to each setting I can't figure it oit
My quest 3 caps out at 68 pd. If I try to push it any farther, it sounds like something is breaking..
I think I need to set it to farther away maybe a notch or two. My eye lashes i think hit the lenses. But also I think my quest 3 is stuck on the low res mode from battery saving and Meta still hasn't fixed the bug. Either way its my first VR and I like it for the price.
What mainly sucks is finding out im left eye dominant and right handed and always closed my left eye while aiming IRL. 😉
So many people are talking about this and the optics. In high contrast situations, like white words on a black background, I notice and many others too that there appears to be a "fog or haze" on the lenses. Like an uneven glow. If you move your head in this situation, you can see the fog change or move. Is this normal or are these units defective? I am told this maybe normal for these LCD screens and lenses. But I find that odd it would be. Like the coatings are bad or something? And no this is not fogging from wearing it. It's there all the time.
Any thoughts? And again, lots of people are complaining of this and many want a real answer but we are not getting it from Meta.
Yes.. I notice it as well. I noticed it would the quest 2, but the quest 2 had other distortions that distracted from it. With the quest 3 being clearer that haze/glare seems more noticeable. That can be caused from a few things. It can be the display, could be the lenses... even with the Pancake lenses you will have light scatter and glare. Depending on the person, it can be their own eyes if they have astigmatism not corrected for.
@@DrEyeGuy Its not just the glare its like also looking through fog.People say high contrast but I have it all the time
