If you want to do more art journaling, I’ve got 10 gluebook tips for beginners who want to use a gluebook as a way to start art journaling for the simple joy of it. Why are gluebooks great? The concept is simple- glue papers into an art journal, using whatever kinds of papers that you would like, and be able to find joy in completing a page or a spread of pages.
Here are my 10 tips for beginners who are new to creating in gluebooks:
1-Use a notebook/journal you already have
2-Paper is important, but the type of paper is not
3-Use anything that is flat (paper, ribbons, washi stickers, stamps, etc)
4-You don’t need to “journal”
5-Pick a mixed media (or not)
6-Your style is not fixed. You can work to change it.
7-Embrace long term project & returning to them
8-It’s ok to work on multiple projects
9-It’s the journey, not the destination
10-Your ability and confidence increase with practice

I needed to hear all of these things! I just keep collecting multitudes of papers, including old family photos and papers, and my perfectionist tendencies have kept me from getting started putting anything together. (I even thought maybe I just like collecting stuff and watching other people create *lol*) I think knowing I can have more than one journal of gluebook going at one without finishing it will help me. Also, permission to copy your style (or try to!) is so generous. Thank you!
I'm so glad you've got some new ideas to think about. Start with a small project, maybe just something the size of an index card or postcard. If it goes ok, make another and keep going until you have a small collection. Then you'll be on your way 👍🏼💜
I have a collage book I made 3 years ago. It is all on horses. So far,I've created 91 images, and am still going, until the book will be filled. I think I will give it a try in a smaller book, like the ones you have shown. Thank you for sharing this video.

I am just finding out about glue books. OMG I a home. It is all for me and I don't have to sell it or donate it. My enjoyment. I am 73 yrs old and it is my turn. Thank You
Exactly, Becky. It for you, and there are so many possible things to do in creating them. I'm so happy for you in making that discovery 😘
I hate when I toss out my old planners but now I can use it as a glue book! Thanks for the share.
I started off using different papers and glueing pictures from magazines. Then I watched a video on art journalling and decided my creations were not good enough and stopped. You have given me the confidence to go back to my initial books and just keep adding to my thoughts and themes thank you so much.
I’m so glad to hear that!! Thank you for sharing your story and your courage to keep going 💙
I m ecstatic about the Rolodex idea! I have one, I don't use anymore at work, I ll "gluebook" it when I need a break from work. Those little pages are a perfect idea for a creative break, I m so looking forward to starting it! Thanks and have a lovely day y'all
I really appreciate your videos. You are relatable and patient and don’t make art feel intimidating. Thanks!
I'm a Library scientist and i highly encourage people to look at Artists' books! They are books as art and there are some glue books that are in museums labeled under "art book" , "artist's book" and "Artists' books" !
I call it my inspiration journal; things I like and inspire me goes in there
Perfect!! 💜👍🏻😉
I never knew about glue books but I have always saved all kinds of my favorite things that I loved. I saved them all in a binder with page protectors that served as pouches.
Great! Now you’ve got new material to use for a journal 👍🏼❣️😍
I love this video so much. I’m not even half way through it, and already, so much inspiration! Margarete, your tips and ideas are great! I’m so excited to get back to work on my junk journal, after being in a rut. I’m not a natural artist or very creative by any means , so I never know what to do in my journals but you’ve given me so many great ideas! Thank you!
I'm so glad it was helpful, Meridith! I'm excited for you to jump back into your projects❣️👍🏼💙
For those of us less crafty, a gluebook can be a cheap composition notebook. I have chronic illness and pain so won't be making fancy books. When the composition book is filled it is beautiful. Reusing the planners is good, esp. those hardly used 2020 ones. (looks over at shelf) 🤣Love the inspiration and reminder of items to use. Thank you.
I love composition books. I even ask my school age daughter if I can have some of her old ones with class notes in them. I love how the pages make that crinkly sound when you turn them 😉
Love this so much!
I turn my glue books into my everyday journal!
This is what I needed to hear today. I was looking through some of my late husbands papers and articles he saved, wondering if I should keep them. Now I think I will look through them and cut and glue some in a journal or composition book.
What a lovely project to work on. I'm glad you've got some new ideas to play with 💜👍🏼
Your Pita Bite journal you stapled together is so clever, colorful, so beautiful. It’s my favorite!!!
Thank you! It's such a "casual" journal, which I love. It's not fancy or particular. It's just everyday stuff, which is so freeing 👍🏼💜
Thank you so much for giving me permission to work on more than one book at a time. I think that this is how I instinctively want to operate, but I always feel guilty if I don’t finish something right away. I’m very excited now. No guilt!❤😂
Great! I'm glad you've got a new way to think about things that gives you a little more leeway. 👍🏼💙
Thank you Margaret for showing that it is OK to work on various projects. I always feel I have to complete one book before starting another. Always love your videos.
Yep, I know what you mean. But it sure is liberating when you know you can do several things at once 😉👍🏼💙
Such good tips! Especially about not having to write in your book. I discovered I don’t like journal writing-I like the idea of it but not doing it. You inspire me to pick up an old journal that I abandoned because I don’t want to write and I’ll glue over the boring stuff and give it a new life. Also your ideas about how personal style can change and evolve, and to embrace longer projects. This type of art is teaching me to become more flexible in my thinking and to be less of a perfectionist. I wish you lived next door to me!
Yay!! Thanks for your comments. I'm so glad the video was helpful ❤️
Me too! A great neighborhood we’d make! And we could have a “______Step Program “ for recovering Perfectionists! lol
This looks so much easier than junk journaling. Thanks for sharing your wisdom
Everything takes time, but I certainly enjoy it more. 😉💙👍🏻
Oh, the Rolodex idea is just fabulous & so unique. Love it!!!
I do love those! I hope you'll start one, too!
I am very happy that I discovered these videos of you last night. Especially the Gluebook. I collected things, but it is all over the place..now I know what to do with it. Thank you very very much.
Great!! I’m so glad you’ve got a new idea to play with 👏🏼❣️😉
So inspiring! Thank you.
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed it 💜
I’d love if you could do a video devoted to showing us how to bind your glue books in different ways other than sewing (staple, hole punch, etc)!
Thanks for the idea. 💜👍🏼
Yes, please!
Best explanation of a glue book so far...
Thank you! I appreciate your words. 😉💜👍🏻
Thank you for explaining what a glue book is. I've been dabbling in junk journaling, but I love the glue book idea! Thanks for the tips also!!
I am about to begin my first glue art journal. This could not have been more timely for me. Thank you…..you’re the very best teacher for this😉. Blessings to you.
What a kind thing to say. Thank you! 😘
THIS is one of the most motivating videos re junk journalling/ glue booking etc I've seen- it feels so freeing! ThankU🥰
I'm so glad, Anna!! 💜 Thanks so much for watching 👍🏼
Very interesting...thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it 💙
Thank you for sharing
Thank you for sharing such helpful tips and showing us exactly what you are talking about! Your videos are so motivating and inspiring and I like their simplicity and clarity and your calming presentation! My mom passed away 2 years ago and I have found lots of interesting papers she kept. I can hardly wait to begin to use them in a similar manner!
What a lovely idea to use some of the papers your mom collected. That sounds like a great project 😉❣️👍🏼
Great video! Very inspiring!😊🌞
Thanks so much! 💙
Margarete, you give so much to the collage art community in teaching, motivation and inspiration. Especially beginners like me. Thank you so much for your time, energy and commitment to sharing and encouraging.
Wow, thanks so much for your kind words! 😘 I'm so glad it was encouraging.
I cannot tell you how wonderful this video made me feel. Thank you !!
I'm so glad❣️ 🙂
I absolutely love your practical advice on collaging, glue books etc. You're a star!
Awww. Thanks so much! ❣️
Great reminders. When I first started doing collage I thought the pages looked clumsy and didn't really like what I did. Now, several years later upon revisiting those early attempts I sometimes tweak them a bit, but overall find them interesting. Thanks for all your tips and advice. Doing is learning!
“Doing is learning”. Love that! 💙
@JudyC - That’s how I feel about my junk journals: they looks so clumsy and amateurish. Some pages look better than others, but on the whole, it’s amateur hour over here. But that’s ok. I enjoy the process and enjoy learning from Margarete and others and just hope I will get better over time!
Great advice!! ❤❤❤
Glad it was helpful!
Great video
Thank you for this wonderful, freeing tutorial. It’s silly but I feel like I’ve been given permission to work on multiple projects rather than becoming worn down & weary as I try (meanwhile losing my zest & excitement) to complete one piece at a time.
Great tips. So happy I stumbled upon your video. Thank you. Merry 2024 to you.
Wonderful! I'm so glad to hear it❣️ All the best to you in 2024! 🎉
I'm not a fan of the color red but, I love your red glue book and now want to make one! Thank you for all the inspiration!
A gluebook dedicated to any single color is great 😉❤️👍🏼
Another fantastic video, thanks Margarete !
Thanks this has help me.
Enjoyed this video❤
Thank you!!
thanks for the tip about old diaries… it’s a great recycling idea too!
Margaret, thank you so much for your informative videos and your 50 prompt printable. I'm 74 and I've been a cardmaker for many of those year's. I recently started watching videos about making journals. I bought alot of items for this craft but I'm a little intimidated by it. Your video inspired me to stop looking at all the supplies I've bought for this craft.....and start using them. Thank you so much.😊
I'm so glad to hear that, Barb! I'm glad you are jumping in there and starting to create with what you have. 💙
I’m not a journaler so glad for the tip that it’s ok to just glue a picture book. All your hints are helpful to me as a beginner. Thanks 😊
I am so glad to come across your channel. I am starting a journal in an empty A4 ring binder. I don't get very much done but it's a place where I can keep everything together. Your voice is lovely and calming. I am useing art for calming therapy and to play with colour and different art mediums. I make cards for my family so I have to keep coming up with something different. Your glue books are perfect. Glue book may not get people looking for your channel but its perfect for people who want to make something art/craft. I love junk, mixed media, colouring in and want to write what I learn. I would not know what that would come under. Glue book is perfect, glue in whatever you want for whatever purpose you want. Thank you so much ❤
I'm so glad you've got a gluebook to go back to, and adding your pages. Keep it up 👍🏻
I just threw out a Girardelli chocolate bag, and thought can I use that in a journal? Nah. But there it is in your journal more than once! I’m never throwing one out again. Such beautiful colors!😂❤
😂 I've done that too--thrown something out, only to see someone else use something similar in an art project. That's what happens sometimes. Gotta go out and buy more chocolates, right? 💜
@@MargareteMiller I like the way you think! 😂
Thanks for making me think outside the book.
Thank you for your very helpful video. I haven't done a glue book, but I am going to now.❤
Glad it was helpful!
Love this video you made! You've relieved a lot of stress I put upon myself about finishing stuff. I also have a really really hard time just starting.
I'm so glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching! 💜
Thanks for all the tips! Love the encouragement of having different projects… I love themed journals ❤
Hooray, halfway through and three cheers👏👏👏 🙂💐

Thank you thank you!! I needed to hear this!!! ❤
I want you to know that I come back and watch this quite a bit. It’s very helpful

Wonderful tips… thank you so much for sharing! ❤
I'm excited to get started. Thank you!
I watch people doing your prompts and it is amazing what for nice pages they come up with. TFS
Fantastic ideas and tips. Sometimes we (I) just need a push to get going (again). Thanks Margarete.
I took the heavyweight art pages out of my Somerset Studio magazines, cut them down, used my Happy Planner punch to make a glue book. The pages are so beautiful and arty and give you a great background to start collaging . On the first page I write “Random Thoughts In No Particular Order”. Then you can journal freely or not. Love it! Love your videos.❤
Wow! I love your ideas ❣️I never thought to use the Sommerset pages that way. I’ve got a bunch I can go grab and use. Thanks! 👏🏼🌟💜
Thank you for the tips and the prompt cards!
Very helpful, thanks! And thanks for the prompts!
Excellent advice!
I love Somerset magazines for collage pictures.
Your projects are all wonderful. I'm new to these, and very much appreciated your ideas. Thanks so much.

Very helpful. Thank you, Margarete.
Thank you!
Thank you for the free prompt tags 😊 I am excited to do my first glue book.
I just started one. It’s so addictive. I will definitely make another one. Lots of inspiration in this video.
Can't wait to do my first glue book. Ty
Wow great tips. Thank you so much.
Wonderful video as always, Margarete. Thank you for the download.
I love your Glue books and your style.
Thank you for sharing beautiful one. Love your enthusiasm its contagious!! 😂
thanks for sharing so much of your ideas jenna
Fantastic video!!! Thank you so much for the permission to have multiple projects at a time. Time to bust that thought distortion!!
This was great, Margarete! I love the covers you use from your food and drink products! They are so lovely. Cocoa Pebbles is just not a stand alone image for a journal cover! I need to class up my eating!😂 I have an over the door hanging organizer where I store all my glue books, finished or not. I can go there and grab one when the mood strikes and either work on one or just enjoy going through one I've completed. Great fun! I have to many ideas to ever finish all the books I'll ever make, and I'm OK with that. As you say, it's the journey, not the destination. ❤
I can't thank you enough for this video. As I have said before I struggle with doing my collage challenge that you have. I love your beautiful books they are so fascinating to look at. I would love to sit in a comfortable place in your home and just sit and look at them. Just seeing them in this video makes me happy.
Thanks, Judie!! And keep working on your collages. It will get easier as you go a long. I'm sure you've come a long way already 💜
Apenas empiezo a ver el video y qué maravilla de ideas! "un libro de limpieza" de herramientas me haré!
I LOVE the red glue book. That's my favourite colour and what a fun little project to work on over time. Really helpful video!

Thank you, Debbie❣️
Ceri The Crafter recommended you and I'm so glad! Watched a couple of your videos last night and I'm already acting on ideas that you inspired. Recently came across notes and cards that I saved from my Mom & Dad over the years. Now I know how to make a special book to hold them in along with vintage papers I saved when they passed. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity! Also thank you for the 50 free prompts :)
Nice! I love Ceri's channel. I was just watching yesterday. 😉❣️👍🏻 I'm so glad you've got some new ideas to play with. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
I'm trying to get into junk journaling, and your tips are very helpful! Thank you! And I like your style.

Yay! I'm so glad ❣️👍🏼💙
This was so enjoyable and informative, Margarete! I was very happy (and relieved!) to hear you say 'copy someone's style that you like'....especially yours! And you will see this when you receive my postcards for the swap. I found your video using the penny stamps so inspiring. Thank you so much.😍
I can't wait to open your envelope, Shelly. It's always such a pleasure to receive your mail❣️💌😍
