Wow, when you said "scrapbook" I imagined the ones you buy at the store - I have many of those kinds (empty) but love your idea of one. One of these days I swear I'll print my photo's and make an imaginative one like yours.
I fell in love with all your work and explanations . I have made books out of cereal boxes. Loved doing it. You have cleared up any questions I wanted to ask. I have subscribed to all your info and even learning what to put on pages to look like I am making something junky or beautiful. I am a Grandma 80 YOUNG and never too old to learn something new. Thank you.
Obrigada por seus comentários. A senhora me edificou. Tenho 56 anos. 😘😘
Holy Moly! That Postal Junk Journal is just wonderful! I'm a USPS mail carrier, and seeing the little I could from you thumbing through it made me unreasonably happy! It looks like a snapshot of any business day at the Post Office. I didn't realize I wanted to make something with a single theme until I saw this. You have truly helped me with my creative process, showing me I do not have to include every idea in a single piece. Outlining different creation processes for different types of books was extremely technically informative as well! Thank you so much for taking time to create and post this video! 😊
Margarete: excellent video. Clarity in this arena is so important and you did it so well. Another video that I will look at again and take notes. Thank you. Carol from California
Thanks for the definitions. I learn from everybody. Your books are wonderful, inspiring. That red book: 💋. I like to call most things BOOKS. That seems a good catch-all.
Great video Margarete! My hubby was sitting next to me when I was watching it and I said "See, I'm not the only one who saves junk!" Your work is amazing. Thank you!
Thank you for your incredily positve way of teaching and imparting knowlege and encouragement. I am one of those who people who see something creative, knows i can do it, loves to create but is too afraid to take that first important step in case i "get it really wrong, and waste time, money, and emotional energy". I get terribly frustrated eith myself. However i am going to do this, carefully, slowly and with considered thought, I am going to make a gift for someone special in my life. Thank you so much Kelly 🌺🌻🦄
Wonderful, Kelly! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and perseverance through struggles. 💜 I'm so glad you are motivated to take those first steps. And don't forget, you can also make a gift for a special someone-- yourself! 👏🏼
Hi Margarete, I am so glad to finaly get a real explanation about these different kinds of books and also to be happy to now call myself a " book artist" 😄, according what you said. I make junk journals, art journals, glue books in altered ones for almost 10 years and it is the first time I watch a video explaning what book art is about... Thank you for having done it. I love the examples you have showed. They are so beautiful work of art.... You make me feel like creating more of these. (all kinds but scrapbooks). TFS. Hugs from France. Kizi🦋
Wonderful explanation of this art. I remember my great aunt (think 30's,40's , 50's)showing me her glue book. I was just a child, but she had glued everything that gave her joy with no thought of collaging or theme. Magazine pictures, newspaper images & comics even, invitations, gift cards, calling cards, ribbons, twine etc. What I wouldn't give for them now. LOL
Your explanation of the differences and how they can be combined certainly helps me understand ‘what’ I’ve actually been doing. LOL Thanks so much for posting this. I just found you thru Ceri the Crafter and his RUclips channel.
I remember when I was a kid to teen, scrapbooks were more like junk / smash journals, it was popular to just have fun taping your scraps of mementos & souvenirs all over pages of a sketchbook, add your bad sketches & scribbling your story explaining the item like a saved diner receipt. It was very primitive. Then it went out of popularity until several years later, scrapbooking returned with a vengeance but as a cut-throat, competitive sport among hobby groups of upper class housewives & empty nesters.
Scrapbooks were also popular in the 1920s and 30s. I've seen many of them in antique shops. The difference with the time you were talking about (1990s to 2000s, is that marketing got overwhelming. Crafting companies realized they could make money from it and it got "cutthroat" as you said. It kind of still is, but the marketing has gotten better, I think 😉. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I really liked your VERY last book--THE RED BOOK glue book. I believe between all the types of book art because I am impatient and want instant results my best choice will be glue books. I can create pockets, tucks and sewn-trimmed pages, flip-outs and glue them in without worrying about binding or a book cover. I just have to make sure I don't add too much without estimating what to take away. Thank you for your informative video! You now have a new subscriber!
Just viewed this excellent video from a year ago... Thank goodness for RUclips and videos like yours! Just getting started at forming interests in book and paper arts into something that suits me. So enjoy taking materials that already exist in the world and imagining them into something new and interesting. Feeling a bit swamped by all the possibilities and avenues available. This video did help me better understand the various terms I've been running into as I explore ideas. Thanks.
This is a great topic. I have been noticing that they seem to overlap. This cleared things up...haha. I absolutely loved all of your examples. You are so talented. You inspire me!
Very interesting. I did not know about all these different terms nor what exactly they meant. Now I know what the distinction is between them. And it is great to know that each of these can also be in part all of them at the same time. Thank you for the info.
Wow! Thankyou so much! This is the only video that ive found that has explained perfectly the differences of each type of these book arts. Its because of the similar yet different journals that are confusing which has prevented me from getting started with these. As you can probably guess, i love them all but I'll m now very clear as to what each one is! Fantastic video!!! ❤
I have never made a junk journal, but admire all the work that goes into making one. I do turn old books into collage books. I take out some of the pages and then glue pages together, to make them stonger. Also I decorate the covers. For instance I have one book that is the collages that I did for Margarete's 2021 challenge. It's a wonderful keepsake for me.
Nice! Altered books as gluebooks. 😉 I have one special gluebook that I did that for. I took an old book and tore out some of the pages to allow for more layers. ❤️
I didn’t think i was confused about these terms, but i love your explanations and examples. Next time someone asks me to explain, I’m just going to direct them here
Abaut 5-6 years ago you made great videos , and It was fun to follow you , because you show what and how you creat , and the camera was kind to you ... But now your videos show you more than your Art ...
Yes, I still do videos where I show how I make something, but I also want to explain things to people who are new and don't understand some things. I talk about things that confused me when I was beginning, and that I think people will find useful/or interesting.
Thank you for breaking these down for us. I’ve been a Scrapbooker for years. Then I moved on to Mixed Media. But I just put things into an Art Book. Found Junk Journals about 3 years ago. Oh my gosh. My heart!! Lol. But I wasn’t ever sure what a glue book was. All the books you showed us were so beautiful. Your collaging is amazing for sure!! I love that your Red Glue Book is going on year 3. There’s no rush to finish. Just enjoy the process. I love that.
I loved this video and your examples. My takeaway was your bindings and your magnetic closure on the last book! Things I had not seen before. I am one year into paper crafting and jj’s. There is so much to discover in the artistry of paper crafting! Thank you❤️
Thanks for a great, informative video. The altered dictionary is stunning. I’m so glad you shared that. Your sons passport book is a wonderful idea. I think I’ll get out my expired passports & turn them into something similar :) I have an altered book that is so far almost three years in the making. It’s a copy of the book It, by Stephen King. It was unwanted by its previous owner. I wanted to use a copy of It or Pet Semetary, as these were the first two books of Stephen’s that I read, when I was way too young to be reading them! It will probably take years to finish, as I don’t work on it every day, but I’m ok with that.
Great video, thanks so much, Margarete! Seems to me the book arts world needs to come up with a new term for a book that is made from new materials e.g. printables, decorative paper, ribbon, tags etc. I decided to call a couple of books I made “eclectic books.” They were wedding journals which told a story (scrapbook), made from an old book (altered book), that included ephemera- napkin, flower petals, place card, program from the wedding, gleefully grabbed by me before going into the garbage (junk journal), and it had items glued onto the pages (glue book). So complete overlap of categories! I think clarification of terms is important and recognition of the overlapping of categories is as well, and your effort to do is appreciated.
My current scrapbook is a junk journal which was made with signatures on elastic like a traveller's notebook so I guess that's another style to add to the mix! This video was great to explain the various styles. I love the idea of the postal journal from a posted box. So many ideas, so little time...😊
Hmmmm.........delicious color sense you have! I'm inspired by the variety of your collage compositions. Wonderful work and concise explanations. Thank you.
This was very well explained. I am very taken with your RED glue book! Actually, they are all works of art, but I like that you said you've been working on that one particular book for about 3 years!!!! That helps take a lot of pressure off, I can tell others that you have taken this long and yours is not finished yet. It's like people want you to be through in 2 days!!!!!!! I have some that are in large ziploc bags. Sometimes you just have to rest from them or you lose your mojo or in your case you are looking for certain items and that cannot be rushed. Thank you for all of this wonderful information!!!!!!!
Margarete, thank you for clearing this up.i have been journalling for 4 years now. I started scrapbooks before it had a name. I love the way you clarify your subject and give clear examples. I am hoping to teach this subject soon from a great venue in the Australian bush. I can tell you that I will be recommending your channel to a whole new audience. Thank you for making my job so much more interesting to my new students.Cheers Vicki.
This was excellent. I learned so much. Your mannerism really set the stage. You are very calm and you have a very nice speaking voice. Love your books...ALL of them. I've made several junk journals, mostly one signature, and always felt like I wasn't doing them right. I just found out from you, they are perfectly fine. I'm happier now. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. It really is fun collecting paper and things. I look at magazines differently. Such therapy.
Hi Margarete, thank you so much for this mini lesson in creating in books! I'm not really a scrap booker, but I do love my altered art books and collaging. I love some of your own book samples shown. The adorable Red Book and the beautiful book by Jane Chip, as she's one of my fave book artists as well. I simply cannot imagine what the shelves in your art room look like!! really enjoy your videos. would love to make a glue book like the one you made with the single ring and long cards. I have done junk journals in many sizes and only recently tried my hand at a glue book. Love that concept. I enjoyed your video about ink box cards also. they are great fun. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Thank you for your explanations concerning the different books - I’ve seen your artwork which always looks so immaculate and which I admire. Thank you for sharing your books - they are so interesting!
Thank you for discribing the different types of books. I think this will help me a lot. I think any of these types of books are keepsakes, because they are all so beautiful and creative. Love all your books also.
I like your postal journal. I make arty junk journals. I like the recycled materials to not look like their original intent. My favorite style is vintage/grunge. The final journal you showed resonated the most with me. I try to avoid kits, however, as I like my work to be original. I love the dictionary altered book. The artist that made it did a great job. While I am a mixed-media artist, including paper collage, I hated collage in high school art. The type of collage that the instructor promoted reminds me of the glue book idea. Your glue books are not like the others that I have seen that are like that: mostly, magazine collage books. Yours are very nice and remind me more of the "underpants" (coined by LorriMarie Jenkins) of a completed collage. The passport journal is great...reads more like a scrapbook to me. Great idea.
You're right about the passport being a scrapbook. I didn't even realize it until after I finished recording. I was like, "hey, wait a minute!" Ha 🙂 We learn something everyday. I get your point about avoiding kits to keep your work more original. Good for you. Take care. ❤️
Wow, when you said "scrapbook" I imagined the ones you buy at the store - I have many of those kinds (empty) but love your idea of one. One of these days I swear I'll print my photo's and make an imaginative one like yours.
Good. I hope you do it and have a blast 😉👍🏼❣️

The true definition of a junk journal. Finally!

Very well said.
Thank you for all of this wonderful information!!!!!!!
Exactly, Betty. I totally agree with you. You DO have to rest from projects or else you'll burn out. I'm glad my 3-year project resonates with you 😉💙
Thanks for the clarification on the kinds of books., well done. Lovely journals too!

Thank you for discribing the different types of books. I think this will help me a lot. I think any of these types of books are keepsakes, because they are all so beautiful and creative. Love all your books also.
Thanks, Teresa ❣️
You are just the best! Love your examples and your concise explanations. Great video
Take care. ❤️
Thank you for clearing it out to me.
You are so welcome! 💜
