Great video! Sometimes I get anxious at the idea of making a collage, but if I'm just set out to create a glue page in a plain composition book, I can relax more. And I really think that's when creativity is more therapeutic for anxiety, etc.😊
Yes, it really does help when you are relaxed about it. It's always harder at the beginning, too. Once you're in it working, things flow a bit more smoothly 💜
Margarete! You gave me exactly what I needed in this video! I have been dying to start collage but was completely lost re: where to begin! Thank you for being there!
Hi Margarete, always happy to see a new video from you. I don’t know if it’s the weirdness and isolation of 2020 or turning 70 this year, , but it seems like more and more I’ve let go of preciousness and just want to relax and have fun with whatever is at hand. Lately that seems to be existing books I don’t want to read anymore or just cheap journals and comp books lying all around me. Since I don’t make a living from art, it’s just the process for me now and having fun and destressing. Art is extremely subjective and we like what we like. So, I just put things together until I like what I see. Thanks for the inspiration - I really like your style and the way you communicate!
Thank you, Terry, and thank for sharing your thoughts. This crazy year has also pushed me to think about things differently. I feel like I'm not worrying so much about the details anymore. I'm more interested in creating and enjoying it. I hope for others to find that too.
Great vid. Thank you! When I first started collaging, I intentionally made my first page UGGG-LEEEE. I used stamps, inks, paints, nail polish, decoupage, text, lots of too-bright purples, etc. It was so intentionally awful, it was hilarious. That really got me through the stage of making art too holy. and gave me permission to experiment and have fun. I still go back and look at that page to remind myself that mistakes are okay, and it's all play.
Thanks, Margarete. I've always loved collage art, since I was exposed to it in high school- many decades ago. You've addressed how stressful it can become when working on projects that have a theme. Whew! I thought it was just me! What a great suggestion and example you gave to eliminate the pressure and bring back the joy in creating collage art.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and understood the message I was sharing, Denise. It' s important to look for ways to remove the stress from something that should be enjoyable and fulfilling. 💙
You are an inspiration! I felt like my first 3 collages from the #2023cwp were so basic. After watching this, I laid out my pieces in a minute. This morning, I woke up refreshed and added mixed media to finish it all off. Thanks for sharing.
I’m absolutely thrilled to join your 100 day Rolodex challenge & I’m watching some of your videos in preparation! I figure I can’t get too stressed by a 2x4” piece of paper! Thanks for your calm & thoughtful process! Erica❤
Thank you for sharing this video! It was very inspiring! I never thought use sheet music or dictionary pages. I live in a big city and we have many thrift stores. I like to use illustrations from used children books, especially the more emotional/dramatic ones. A lot of the illustration artwork in children's books is well done and beautiful.
I discovered your channel today and I love the way you create and explain how to create something with papers and cuts and washi tapes. Thank you very much, I love it! 😍
Margarete, thank you for your guidance and for your free sheet of collage images.I always make envelopes out of scrap paper from old books, then do collage. Your images worked well with this paper. I was in a hurry on this one, but I will use these images a great deal. Thank you for your generosity!
This is an excellent video and I come back to it time and time again ......I do a lot of collage but sometimes I just get stuck and especially as you say with new journals or lovely paper - thank you Margarete
Thank you for another great video! I've done the 3 pieces & 5 pieces in a challenge a few years ago. They came out nice. (The one with more pieces made me think harder, but it also looks the best!) I haven't done any since then. I'm into card making now. And making Envelope Notebooks that Luise Heinzl showed on RUclips. (They'll be my Christmas presents for this year!!) I'll probably do something like this on pages I don't like!! I'm still learning & loving it at 68 years old!!
Margarete, this is brilliant and hits the nail on the head for me. Sometimes I’m paralyzed, looking at a blank page. Your tutorial demystifies the process. Merci beaucoup!💙
This is a great idea, Margaret! I started your collage challenge and made a glue book with an old book that wasn’t special. I’m having fun experimenting! Thanks for all the inspiration 💜
Great advice! I’ve been a card maker/ rubber stamper for fifteen years. I’m looking for another outlet and I’m thinking collage books would be it. What a great way to use all the supplies I already have.
Hi, I like seeing that you don't need pounds and pounds of scraps and images. Three(3) of us are in a 2BR condo, so I don't have a lot of storage space. Tina, Al's wife
Thank you for using what is a simple construct and explaining some of your decision making. You gave many good points but did not dictate an exact placement, so we are free to experiment. Having choices of so many papers and giving us opportunities to see that you changed your mind is very helpful.
Great tips, even for experienced people! Thank you, Margarete. I just love your work. I think we get better by creating consistently, which is always a challenge for me. I really want to learn to push through and create every day.
Interesting I always get stuck getting started and layering rubber stamps and scrap paper and other papers of Interest I have a huge pile of all different kinds of notebooks because I say one day I'm going to fill them with texture and color and print but I never do I've started one or two and I've done other similar projects but I never rip the pages out I go through the book and I glue two to three pages together through the whole notebook it makes the pages nice and thick and sturdy do I never liked using cardstock scrapbook paper on the pages because they are too thick of a paper. I do agree in groups of three is a good way to get started
I hope you've got some new ideas to play with. It sounds like you've got several notebooks so you can choose one to experiment with and try. I hope you will 😉❤️👍🏼
I have been doing your challenges in an old book. It surprised me to look through and see how new my layouts seem to me and how lovely is the book as a whole. This is great help and I also have a boxful of little notebooks with nothing to do.Love the binder ring storage idea!
Thanks, Margarete! This was a very encouraging video ... I'm so often too afraid of failure to even try, even though I collect papers, etc. After you got down the basics (stamping, 3 papers), I was thinking: Stitching with embroidery floss, and/or mark-making. Or sewing on a charm. Or attaching a file tab to the edge. Or a fabric tag to the edge. It's easy for me to suggest for you; now I need to loosen up and DO. I'm inspired to make a list for myself of techniques to remember. Thanks for the encouragement!
Thank you so much for inspiration, amazing how many papers and so on are just ordinairy, every day stuff. Always thought collage was using expensive paper and stickers and fancy note books...have obviously been watching the wrong videos . My daughter sent me this link give me something to think about as I am on day four of a bad bout of covid. Thank you so much.
Get better soon so you have the energy and interest to work on a junk journal 😉 Yes, I like to use everyday papers and things because they often have direct connections to our lives. And it's enjoyable to use papers that may just ordinarily go to the recycle bin. 💜
I am new to collaging, I watch different videos and everyone makes it look so easy, but every time I try to make something, I get frustrated and end up not making anything. Your video is very helpful. I guess I will start small like you suggested and see where it goes!
I too have felt very unsure about what to do. This was very helpful. I’m thinking I may be more minimalistic with them. Sometimes all that layering Gives me more anxiety. It’s always a joy to watch you.
I am so happy!!! I watched your tutorial this morning and marched right to a cheap little notebook and started with my glue stick!! I did 2 small pages and without a doubt the cutest collage I have ever done...thank you so much for your tutorials and help!!!!! I wish I could show you what I made!!!
That's so awesome, Linda!! 👏🏼 Are you part of the Collective? If you are, you can share photos of what you make. I'd love to see :-) I just mailed your envelope off this morning. You'll be getting it this week ❤️
Margarete, thank you, I enjoy your videos and get a Lot of nice ideas from you. Also, you show us how to have fun and not get anxiety or be nervous about starting. You're so talented. :)
This was really helpful. You are such a great teacher and explain the process so clearly. I also like the idea of the collage bits on the binder ring. Might have to give that a try.
Wow! I discovered your channel through one of your Pinterest articles and I’m so glad I’ve found you! This video has really inspired me. I have so many ideas, ephemera Etc that I want to try out but BV I’ve been out of practice for months, I freeze up at the moment when it’s time to create! I feel very inspired to start! Thank you!
Thank you for this great video - I shared it with a friend who is beginning with collage and is very confused and anxious - know it will help her! Have a wonderful Holiday Season.
New subscriber here from Florida. Enjoyed your tutorial, I have a new journal just for art, but I really can’t draw so this will be for collage and paper. Thanks for the ideas.
Hello Margarete! I'm a new subscriber. I love your pace, your creativity and your ideas. Thank you! I just recently started collaging and I'm getting great ideas from your videos🥰💕
Excellent instructional video. Thank you for breaking down this overwhelming process. As well, where do you get all of your ephemera? I see so much on Aliexpress. I know you like Ephemera and vintage style collage. but I'm interested in using more current images as well. Most people tend to use Ephemera and wondering if that is because those materials are what is sold on line. Do you ever use matte medium or Mod Podge or do you simply glue the materials onto the page and move on?
I simply glue and move on. I have an extreme dislike for Mod Podge after I ruined several pieces of art with it. I talk about ephemera here: ruclips.net/video/75d56lT0p8s/видео.html. Hope it helps.
I've watched this several times and always seem to pick up something new! It's a great refresher for, as you have said, when one is stuck. A simple layout can often be the best medicine to get you moving forward again. Thanks, Margarete!❤
thank you for the video.....its combining/layering and colors of the paper is really hard for me....i have some good pages and alot of not so good....thanks for the mini steps.

That’s right! They’re little spaces. You won’t love everything you make but that’s ok if you are learning and having fun along the way 😉❣️👏🏼
This is so clever & I will be giving it a go. Thank you.
Wonderful! 💜
Loved this simple and clear tutorial..Perfect to get unblocked ….

Great video for new artists. Simple and effective instructions. Thank you 💜

I always want my art work to look perfect and get discouraged easily. This glue book is really no pressure and that gives away to satisfaction. Thanks
Exactly so. I hope you’ll start and work on one, too ❤️
Omg❤, this is amazing ❤. Incredibly helpful, and i love the way the scrap papers are organised in the ring! 📚📏🖊✂️🇭🇲💖

Margarete, this is brilliant and hits the nail on the head for me. Sometimes I’m paralyzed, looking at a blank page. Your tutorial demystifies the process. Merci beaucoup!💙
Very helpful. The binder ring of small papers is a good idea since piles of stuff at a certain point get overwhelming for me.
This is a great idea, Margaret! I started your collage challenge and made a glue book with an old book that wasn’t special. I’m having fun experimenting! Thanks for all the inspiration 💜
I am just beginning but have wanted to try collage for a long time. Thank you for being so encouraging and for making all these videos!
I like the simplicity of it! I need the simplicity! And it is gorgeous!
Really enjoy your teachings.

Thank you for this and for explaining what you meant about "intersections".
Thank you for sharing this! I can get easily overwhelmed and this really helps. Thanks Margarete!
You're welcome. I'm glad it is of some assistance.
Great lesson, it was something I was in dire need of. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Margarete, you are such a brilliant teacher! thank you for making this video, it was so helpful :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!
Nice!☺️
This was really helpful. You are such a great teacher and explain the process so clearly. I also like the idea of the collage bits on the binder ring. Might have to give that a try.
Thank you, Sandra ❤️
I like to start with 3 pieces and build from there. But I like the way the stamped background adds more interest!
I agree, Pamela, that rubber stampings can add interest in the background. Simple designs work best in that case.
Thank you for explaining your process. This video helped me so much.
Wow! I discovered your channel through one of your Pinterest articles and I’m so glad I’ve found you! This video has really inspired me. identifying the "intersection" was an aha moment for me!

I've watched this several times and always seem to pick up something new! It's a great refresher for, as you have said, when one is stuck. A simple layout can often be the best medicine to get you moving forward again. Thanks, Margarete!❤
Thank you, Robyn for your comments. Simple layouts are often overlooked, aren't they, and they're so helpful.
thank you for the video.....its combining/layering and colors of the paper is really hard for me....i have some good pages and alot of not so good....thanks for the mini steps.

Thankyou for sharing 🤗
I prefer to mix 6 images at most in a collage otherwise my brain starts tripping. Less is more.
Very helpful. I sit and sit and just can't seem to get it "together" yours looks perfect
Are you a member of the Collective? Come over to the Beginner's circle and post there. I'd be happy to help you.
@@MargareteMiller where can I find that? This video was very helpful, but i want to learn more 👏
Thank you Margaret, so inspiring.
Thank you ❤️
Thank you 😊 for teaching use 🙏 ❤ 😊
You have some awesome stamps, too! Can you share where you get them?
Rubber stamps? I pick them up used at sales or on eBay.
I love your video. I want to make a junk journal and I think this is the place to start! One question, where can I buy the postal stamp stickers? They look fantastic!
Hi Heather, I bought those while on vacation in central Europe, so I have no idea where to find them. I'd totally recommend real stamps, though. You can find them on Ebay or Etsy.
