    Thank you, Natasa. Lovely creation! Two things make your videos particularly helpful. First, you provide a written plan so viewers know what you intend to accomplish in that lesson; we don't have to guess or wonder. Second, you share your thinking out loud as you decide your design, select your materials, pick colors, etc. This greatly helps viewers understand your process, why you are doing what you are doing. That is EXCELLENT teaching! It helps to optimize viewers' learning. Thanks for taking us on this explorative, creative journey with you! 💌 Cheryl in AZ

    Thank you for showing collage as design, rather than the random gluing that I've seen on so many other video. They both have their purpose, but I had pretty much given up on collage because I struggle with randomness. As an aside: Rule of thirds is a guideline for any kind of layout - photographs (as @EmmKaa mentions), magazine pages, collages. It's really a simplified, much easier to follow version of the Fibonacci sequence, which can be depicted as a spiral that starts small in the middle and increases as it goes around. The shell of a chambered nautilus is a perfect example. Very, very few people need to dive down to that level of detail in their layouts, but I've found it helps me to picture that spiral when trying to figure out how to place items around the focal point. One reason your collage works so well is that it follows the spiral very effectively. If you use the girl's face as the starting point, swirling up and to the right will take you through the boy's face and to the right edge of the page. Keep going and you hit the inner then outer circles of the doily, then the butterfly (where the angle of your snippet is a perfect match for the imaginary curve), up to the top of your background piece and off the page. The sentiment is the only major design element that doesn't fall on one of those imaginary curves. However, it sits quite nicely in the space between the lines and would have gotten lost on the book page, so I think you made a good call. Because, after all, thirds and spirals are just guidelines. : )

    One of the first things I learned in photography class was the rule of thirds. The next thing I learned was to throw them out the window. Not entirely really, but to remember that art is an extension of me, and I am far from perfect 🤔😲🤫 😋. I finally got the guts to do a piece that was going to be in a permanent place once it was finished, and maybe 2/3 of the way through I realized that I hated it! 😰. So I walked away crying 😭 and remembered that I had no focal point! For as planned out as the piece was, everything moved to the background once I added it (literally and figuratively), and everything looked great. Even the background popped, and the whole family loved it (and trust me, they're not afraid to let me know if something is, a-hem, "not my best work"). Just jump in with what another one of my other instructors calls "reckless abandon" and go for it. Know the rules and don't be afraid to break them. Art is an extension of you and you are beautiful! With love from the Southern California desert, MK. 🤗♥️🌵🏜️

    Nicely done! This turned out very well. I’m certainly no expert or pro!
    One suggestion to think about in future, of course you could take it or leave it...you could do some distressing around the edge of the picture like roughing up the edges, a couple of little tears or folds,or, placing some of the smaller bits that are under the photo, over the edges of the photo instead. The page itself has very rough, rustic edges. The doily could have been torn as well, so it wasn’t perfectly round.
    Funny because I kept thinking, put the stitched paper under the butterfly, and then you did it! 😊
    It’s a really great page!

    I have learned so much from you! Thank you! As for collages, I prefer to use balance. I think you mostly had it on your second collage, but like you said, there was an empty space on top of the paper lace ( I cannot think how to spell it!) I liked your first collage, though. I felt it had more balance and in it's own way followed your rules. Anyway, i sincerely enjoy your work and again, thank you.

    While I am not an expert, collage is one of my favorite art techniques. I’ve loved collage since I was a child! While researching others is helpful, each artist needs to find her own way, which is usually through much practice and experimenting. Again, I think of the rules more of guidelines, and create what looks good to me. You mentioned near the end that you may have moved the focal point to the left. Funny, I kept saying that to myself, as well. I think with continued practice you will enjoy your collages even more!

    • @TreasureBooks
      @TreasureBooks  4 года назад

      Thank you so much Elaine. I totally agree with everything you said. What I found difficult is knowing how to start, and what does actually look good. Things that I thought look good a month ago, no longer look good now that I've done a little bit of collage reading. But I also got so many amazing pointers in the comments on how I could improve the collage. I think guidelines help the complete novice, and like you say, practice and experimenting will take us further. Thank you for watching Elaine :)

    Collage is my biggest struggle - so many I view here do it so easily it seems but No - Not Me! This is helpful to use as a starting point along with so many other "rules" but artists tend to bend the rules as they go - while I don't feel as if I am yet an artist, I do share the desire along with the need to ink edges as a given to any unsure situation...Lol! There are many different guidelines I guess. It can help beginners, but then instinct takes over and guidelines mean nothing :)))

  • @YayaBolender
    @YayaBolender 2 года назад

    The only advice I can give you is: don’t follow rules, follow your instinct and glue as you go. You will learn faster this way. About this specific collage, everything is a little too much at the bottom of the page and not enough at the top, like in framing, it gives the illusion that it is falling down. In framing, we must always have a little more empty space at the bottom than at the top, otherwise we have the feeling that the image is falling down. Here, it made me think of that, but for a first one, it’s really good. I think that instinctively, we all are able to know where to glue things, and what comes next to keep the balance. The fun comes from the adventure 😊

    Adding a bit of phone book page to a collage?! I've never thought of or seen that before! :) Cool idea.
    I haven't done many collages to be honest, but that's another element I'll incorporate from now on. I've got plenty of phone books.

      Its so good to use in collage, because its got a nice muted colour, and its very thin 😊

    Looks Fab! I wondered how the phone book page would look....I’ve been cleaning out some stuff and found a few old phone books and thought about it. Maybe I’ll keep them after all 🙂TYFS ❤️

    Love your class...okay, small contribution after you said you felt there was perhaps too much doily showing...you could add some stamping. Love the idea of a wee bit of doodling too!
    Oooooo, or a bit of stenciling!
    Ooooooooo now I have got to make a page of my own...love the phone book idea!

    I like it! I haven't done a collage since grade school but want to try it in my journal since I see so many pretty ones online. This is encouraging me to try it! I also ordered a bunch of distress inks after watching your videos lol. Can't wait to try them!!
