This soundtrack fits with both victory and defeat, it's epic for retreating due to heavy casualties on your side, and pushing forward because you're on a winning streak
A theme for Victory or a glorious last stand, like my Mec Trooper, during the Chrysalid infestation mission, standing his ground and holding them off while the rest of the team escaped to the dropship
weldonwin Wow, the same thing happened to me the first time I did that mission! I had to leave my first MEC trooper behind because I wasn't sure whether "turns left: 1" meant I could wait the one more round I needed. It was ironman though, so I had to weigh one life against the possible loss of the entire team... I can just imagine her watching the dropship lift off.
tratan3 Gun blazing and smashing bugs to paste with the Rocket Fist, looking up for a moment as the swarm closes in on all sides and seeing the dropship boosting away and she just whispers "Vigilo Confido..." Under he breath, before the flurry of claws decends on her and the airstrike hits
This music played when I used one of my heavies that was on low health to cover as I pulled the rest of the team back with a VIP. He was poisoned and on 2 bars, so he was never gonna make it back anyways. His final standoff was one of the most memorable things I did in this game.
+Top Hattington Yes, that kind of causalities make xcom gaming like a personal process. I remember how I needed to sacrifice my assault to decease sectiod commander who'd taken over mind of my other assault guy chasing my Major sniper on 3 hp and was bound to kill him in the next round.
+Top Hattington these one is the music playing in my craziest moments in this game when i come trhough a situation of mad disvantage that the only thing made me win was my soldiers positions in the field
Brilliant. I still remember my squad surviving the entire war then on the final mission they started falling one by one. 2 out of 6 made it out alive. Its been 6 years since I played this beast of a game.
*Enemy located. Mechtoid and two Sectoid Commanders. This theme plays.* *Team: Two rookies, a Heavy, Sniper, Assault, and Support.* *Heavy holo-target hits one Sectoid Commander. Time stands still in those couple seconds.* *Rookie fires. It connects! 6 damage!* *The Mechtoid falls! "Rookie is armed with a laser rifle, a laser pistol, and a dream." That is literally how I arm soldiers for all my missions. I dont look at the gear thinking it's not enough, it's always enough, better gear just makes it smoother.
True, one of my rookies got 5 kills on his first mission, saving the squad But it was when my best were corporals and sergeants, now he's my best troop alongside an assault
My favorite battle theme from XCOM. I always get hyped up when this theme plays because it reminds me of a triumphant comeback I made during one of my seemingly-lost battles. I believe I had three soldiers fight off two waves of Aliens after the rest had been killed or incapacitated. I always recall that feeling of dread and relief when the battle was over and I somehow won.
This song waa was playing... grenaded by Mutons. 1 KIA. 1 critically injured. She was then executed by another Muton. The designated team leader panicked and so did the medic. Silvia " Chops " Lopez with her shotgun was left...she single handedly killed both Mutons to this song.
When you're team is barely holding together, their magazines empty, desperately dragging the VIP back to extraction, and then Thin Man start dropping from the top of the suspension bridge.
it was my first play and here was my first EXALT mission. I got 5 man squad with two Captains (sniper and assault) and the rest with rookies. I thought "i mean these are some regular human folks so how hard can it be?" right? after 5 mins here I was with 2 rookies down, my Cpt Assault Ruben "the Mad Man" trapped inside a garage where he's taking fire from 5 different angles. He had this "counter attack any moving enemy within 4 tiles" skill so he was fighting back constantly and dodging enemy fire like Muhammad Ali. Odds were like 7 to 1 yet he took down 3 of'em by himself in a turn. He was wounded and waiting for his backup and this wonderful music was playing in the background. In that moment I fell in love with this game.
Me fav! You can feel the weight of the world on your shoulders but then you have your team, gruff, scarred but valiant and ready, staring the enemy down. On impossible with rookies tho, it's a bit anti climatic when the kids start panicing and play 'pass the panic'

This tune can make you feel a tad overconfident if you let it cos it makes sound like things are going so well then you run into that pack of muton elites you missed earlier
Then you starting taking heavy casualties and the one novice squadmate you have which replaced an injured member goes beyond the call of duty and goes absolute beast mode.
Fitting music for your backs against the walls in a cemetery with squaddies and corporals with traditional weaponry against a cyberdisk and its drones, and a mechtoid buffed by a sectoid. Lost four guys in that clash. Made me wish my better units weren't battered when dealing with the UFO earlier.

The last squad man survival, i never forget my last sniper in terror mission all squad members where killed by crissalids, she sniped one by one from high ground playing, becoming hero of xcom since there!
I always imagine one xcom veteran giving an epic speec to this music, like this: 'We are the greatest fear an e.t. can feel, we are the hopes of every human in the world, we are the first and last defensive line, we alone protect this planet from being destroyed. We are...the xcom. Commander, we will not fail.'
This was playing when I first encountered the Chrysalids. After the initial 'oh crap' moment, I proceeded to smear those bugs. Unfortunately they zombied a civilian. :( Smeared the zombie too!
Hey, not saying Zimmer isn't terrific. I absolutely adore his work for the Dark Knight Trilogy. If you're interested, check out Michael Giacchino's work. He did music for both video games (Call of Duty) and films (Up, Ratatouille, Star Trek).
In all honesty, it's quite difficult to top Deus Ex: HR's OST. But he really captured that "fighting for survival" feeling in most of the tracks he did here. xD
Once, all my soldiers were KIA, except for one. What is funny that is.. Aliens never hit their shots! They were killed off quickly though. (Irony, that soldier had 1 hp left)
Come to think of it these combat themes are probably the ones rejected from Human Revolution, recycled into a completely different game... that's not a complaint, i love McCann's music :)
Next time you play x-com ufo defense, remember to toast them zombies with fire to avoid new lids... Actually scratch that, burn the city to the ground, there is only one way to be safe with lids. But no question about it, in the new game the lids are nerfed (assault operatives can wreck them in THEIR turn) while the sectopods are insane killing machines capable to killing half the squad in one go.
Oh man, My first mission against Chrysalids on the highest difficulty was surprisingly easy, so I was given the wrong impression. The mission simply had an astoundingly low amount of them present, and without any others around. Every panic event since then was a clusterfuck of 10+. My second encounter was horrible... Lone Chrysalid charges me, smoke it from cover, when suddenly the biggest fucking swarm I've ever seen pours out from EVERY direction and onto me. Out of ammo before you notice it.
LOL. Chryssaalids in this game are such wusses. In the original they always one hit kill and then the victim becomes a zombie. When you kill the zombie in this game your safe. In the original that zombies dies and out comes the Chryssalid within (that is even if you kill him in the same turn). So essentially Chryssalids spread like a plague within your squad (did I mention, they can kill multiple victims in one turn?). That made them my absolute worst enemy in X-COM. Worse than everything else.
+Cosmic Drew poor resource allocation but its damn annoying should i go for scientists for my research of engineers to gain coverage and keep the panic low if i dont get soon panic reduction missions
+Cosmic Drew - To be good at XCOM, you have to already know the game and pray for a lot of luck. It also helps if you have already done enough runs to memorize the maps and the enemy encounters. First timers playing will face inevitable casualties and frustration.
