I owned the 85 mm f1.8 and it was great. Best value for money of those 3. Now I have the 85 mm f1.4 IS. The image stabilisation does an amazing job, I can even take sharp pics handheld at 1/10th of a second !
As per our records, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens is made in Taiwan. This would be subject to change at any time and being that the lens is currently made in Taiwan, there are no visible differences between it and one that has been made in Japan.
My 85mm f1.8 made in Japan from 2012 and no issues with it. Even dropped it once and focus got stuck but after a few hard taps it works ok again. I have a Canon 100D/SL1 and its made in Taiwan and it has poor build quality compared to my Japanese Canon bodies, feeling cheap and all the rubber parts on body coming loose and falling off. The camera functions fine though.
Own all three? What great suggestion from a photography store.
And now, you can add the RF 85/1.2 L as well for good measure
Had a good chuckle as well. Treat yourself. Buy Alllll the lenses.

It's kind of refreshing you recommend the cheapest lens !
I have the 85mm 1.8 and the background is smooth and dreamy (their word not mine) so I'm good with just owning one of the three
LOL! All three lenses?! Thank you! I'm going to drop 3k and by them tomorrow!
this was hilarious and fun to watch and NOT TOO LONG perfecta
The 1.4 was nice but out of focus in the second shot.
How many lights did you use on your sample shots?
I don’t think you can shoot these wide open on a day that bright without some serious nd filters right?
wupsje1 It can be done - we used a Profoto B2 w HSS as a fill for a lot of the shots.
Mystery guitar man works for b and h now?
i would love the 1/2 but that rear element !!!! dont think so
Models name please

Is there a difference between the 85mm 1.8 made in Taiwan and those made in Japan

IF I HAVE 50 MM 1.8 AND ISPEND MY MONEY TO BUY ONT OF THEM WHICH IS BETTER TO ME>?
If you have the budget and if low light is an issue, the 85mm f/1.2L would be the best option to consider.
