Hey folks! Thanks for viewing and taking time to read the description too πŸ˜€ πŸ‘. Just a warning if your reading this first but there will be some graphic type content.
People aren't perfect, animals aren't perfect. Accidents are bound to happen in life, and sometimes accidents can be fatal so its good to be prepared if you can. This video focuses on an injury one of our female dogs had accidently given to her first puppy being delivered. She was a first time mother and had pulled on the puppy father than afterburner perhaps, not knowing what she was biting. The skin tore in a quick movement and just like that there was a hurt pup completely by accident. And always on a Friday evening do these things happen.
So what can we do about this? At first we weren't sure when we saw the wound, how deep it was and the extent of the swelling and infection beginning to creep in. We could smell the infection in the room and near this poor pup the next day. Mike and I looked on several websites between the two of us and found we couldn't do much. We bought an antibacterial cream that was ok to use on dogs and cats but at a day old this puppy was too young for antibiotics. We ended up turning to the only option we could think of, which was the same thing we've used for our own wounds and infections, the older dogs ouchies as well as our cats battle wounds.
Here we had on hand some pink Himalayan rock salt and mixed it with some cooled down boiled water from the kettle. As you saw in the video we submerged the pups foot entirely, we did this the first day and then in the 3rd day and that was it. After the first day of being bandaged we left it open and exposed but kept the area as clean as we could of fur and debris. At one point a few pieces of fur got stuck to the sticky outside area but we didn't want to pull at the really snug ones. As the photos showed the greenish yellowy colour went away after the first few days, two salt water dips, and the smell did too.
Luckily, there were only three puppies and not many pushing and shoving, otherwise do make sure you help monitor feedings at first as the claws of other puppies might scratch the wound and that must hurt. Ouch. This pooch ended up just fine. Should any symptoms of infection had of lingered we would have rushed the puppy in by the Monday but we watched it heal great like any other wound our pets have had.
For some of the other injuries our cats have had for example we use a syringe and squirt it on or have also dunked whole paws or kitty legs in the salt water. I do recommend sea salt or pink rock salt and NOT the regular white table salt. I don't even buy that anymore.
