Mulch Gardening, The First Few Years
No till, lazy gardening way of doing things around here lately! Here is a look at our few mulch gardens and how they are progressing. Layer organic mulch to create easy to weed gardens without hurting!
I'm not a pro -yet -but am well on my way to becoming one the more I continue to try new things and learn. I do enjoy yardwork and gardening and I thank everyone who tunes into these videos and follows me on this journey I'm on.
Please do not pull up or take any plants from parks you visit! My husband and I are family friends of those who run Wild Country Disc Golf in Fenelon Falls, Ontario. We were having a discussion about the leeks they had picked and I was offered some, then asked if the...

Tips For Stacking Firewood
Просмотров 465Год назад
Hare are a few tips to remember when stacking wood. - Stack bark up. Bark acts as a natural barrier against water and can protect the inner wood when stacked bark up. - Cycle through oldest first. This may mean restocking but its worth the effort. - Have the wood off the ground. Letting your wood sit directly on the ground will cause it to rot. Rotten wood is no good! - Don't stack too close to...
Pulling Grass Roots From Mulch Garden Beds

It's so incredibly easy to pull weeds and grass out of back-to-Eden type mulched gardens! I just cannot express that enough! No tilling. Little to no watering. Less weeding. Doesn't that all sound great? Mulch gardening in raised beds (even low-to-the-ground beds) has been a blessing to me in the sense of making gardening easier, more efficient and better looking in my opinion. I love the look ...

      I wasn't trying to convince it's grvity fed. For that you'll have to spend more money on a bigger unit. It's not gravity that draws a branch in, it's the blades as they spin pulling it in. Really the only stuff I push in are little skinny branches because they get sliced so easily the blades dont have a chance to grab and pull them in. Larger branches get pulled in sometimes forcibly (and fast) and my hand is only on the branch to catch it if needed or steady it so it doesn't jerk around and damage the machine. You wouldnt know unless you tried it yourself as the videos don't give the viewer the feeling.

    Great demonstration of the technique. I am more partial to the european scythe style sickles that cut inward, but the kama style sickles like you are using are dead simple tools that are easy to maintain and repair. They are really great in super tight spaces where my other sickle doesnt fare as well. I like to rest the back of the sickle blade on the ground as i work to keep the cut low and away from my grasping hand. Basically treating like scything backwards. Got myself once in the thumb because there was a bit of aluminum in some thick grass. The blade caught on and rode upward into my grasping hand. Gloves probably woulda stopped that. Good call on those.

      Ouch! Yeah, gloves and good footwear are a must. I have worn sandals and no gloves but its really not the safest. My husband was doing it in sandals and then went to put shoes on and ended up slicing the tip of his shoe at some point and was very thankful he changed when he did. I would like to eventually try a few different kinds of sickles and demonstrate them and if my mind changes about what I like. Thanks for stopping by and stay safe!

    👍 I just GAVE AWAY my propelled DR trimmer, string trimmer and brush cutter… and replaced them with an ancient mowing tool-the scythe❕ Although I’m still learning to master the technique, I greatly appreciate that my Austrian scythe requires no gas, oil, OR annoying maintenance/repair. Just a bit of sharpening & peening now and then is all that’s needed. I use it to cut grass hay on my pasture, as well as keep the front yard groomed up. I JUST LOVE IT. However, I think a sickle may just be the perfect tool for my vegetable garden and front yard. Very helpful video 👍 Can you recommend a good brand and/or vendor? Thank you.

      As for band, no, I just use a korean one I bought in amazon. However, I do prefer the straighter blade overbthe curved half-circle sickle for gutting the grass around plants. If I were sickling a lot of something, like a small field of something, then maybe the half-circle sickle would do better. I really dont know. I personally prefer the small curve of the more straigh bladed sickle for what I do. Thanks for taking a minute to comment!

    Great little machine once you get it started. Would be a better machine if there was a "neutral" setting isolating the engine from impeller for start up. Very difficult to pull start a new engine. I had to remove the snap on air filter cover and foam filter, and sprayed just a shot of carb cleaner into carburetor to give the spark plug enough fuel to fire the engine. Then I replaced the foam filter and cover. Ran like a charm afterward.

    A cherry tree needs at least 3x3 meters ground surface ; so don't feel embarrassed to pull them out as soon as you see these suckers coming out of the soil from the mother tree surface tracing roots. Otherwise your lawn will be invaded. I have the same problem over here, and when I selected a couple of young of these plants, I buried them inside a 40 cm height bottom less plastic bucket to avoid propagating the same issue. Cheers.

    • @narrowpathjourney
      @narrowpathjourney 5 месяцев назад

      These cherries did cover a very large area of the yard and we hated it, so over the years we've cut and mowed over the areas of the yard we want back and don't let them pop up anywhere but where we're ok with them. Their root sytem is quite extensive, but the property here wasnt taken care of for maybe 20 years or so till we moved in and after 10 years of us working at it we're still finding new things (or very old things).

    • @narrowpathjourney
      @narrowpathjourney 6 месяцев назад

      The start of my other video on sickling does. I sharpen as I go and feel it needs it. If I don't feel it needs to be supper, ultra sharp then I just keep going till I feel the blade "bite" instead of "slice". It's not a fancy sword lol, just a grass cutter. Plus, this video was to show the technique of curving or arching your slice, not about the blade itself, so oh well 🤷‍♀️.

    Cool. We just moved to Saskatchewan, and am currently shifting my thinking from a market garden on a few acres to life in the bush. Was on the verge of buying a much pricier attachment for our tractor, but since our Champion generator works awesome, I thought I'd see if they make a chipper. Which is how I found my way to looking for reviews on RUclips. I can get the 224cc version locally, but I have to drive a bit further for the 338. Pretty sure the tractor option is out, thanks to these videos. Cheers.

    • @narrowpathjourney
      @narrowpathjourney Год назад

      It's one of our most used tools on our property. Any branches, the raspberry stalks at the end of the season, leaves, etc, we use it so much. The 338 is the same size just a bigger motor. It might go through dead/dry stuff a bit better but then also will wear the blades just the same. Either is good to have for sure and if you didn't need to purchase a more expensive tractor machine then thats good too! Thanks for stopping by! God bless and happy gardening!

      @@FrankVaughan That's what we did did here with an uninhabited place tucked away haha 😄👍. A diamond in the rough is what we like to call it. We have about 3 acres though and plan to turn it all into a food forest type of thing. Trees down to shrubs then the ground coverage stuff and mostly all edible plants in between. So for us being without a tractor we're fine with this 224cc, at least for now.

    • @FrankVaughan

      That's awesome. Things are much better in this beautiful province than back East. Culture. Politics. More deer than people. I ended up grabbing the 338 cc just because it was roughly the same price. I drove the hour plus and the Prince Albert this morning, and drove back. I opened the box and the thing was almost comically damaged. Gas tank was crushed. The shoot was crushed. Like I said it was comical enough that I definitely laughed about it. But then I had to drive back... But they exchanged it no problem. Can't wait to give it a try tomorrow and get laying down some mulch. Super excited. I have watched a lot of reviews before making purchases on youtube, but this is the first time I think I've ran into somebody doing the same thing in the same place. That is pretty cool.
