I absolutely love every song and this album called infinity and their next album called Evolution. Both are truly masterpieces. No Elton...just Gregg Rollie on keys...Neal Schon on lead guitar. Steve Perry didn’t take singing lessons...as far as I know. Steve Perry’s voice is unmatched. He is the GOAT!!! His voice is liquid gold.
No, Steve’s (Perry) voice is all natural. He actually played drums through jr high-high school. Steve didn’t smoke he liked beer, wine and such. He grew up with his mom smoking though. He started some piano lessons but didn’t go really far. He has an ear for rhythm and melody.
That’s my baby! Omgosh I have spent so many hours listening to this song and crying when I had a broken heart. Listen to it straight through if you want to feel it.
Steve Perry's dad was a big band singer. And was always surrounded by music. Steve had always seen himself as a singer early in his life. He would always perform in front of his parents and grandparents. Also singers like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding were his favorite singers. One song that you guys should react to is 'Mother Father' live from the 1981 Houston, Tx concert!! It's a Masterpiece!!!
Winds of march showcases Steve's voice from infinity. The first two journey records infinity and evolution were produced by Roy Thomas Baker the producer of Queen to give Journey it's sound featuring their new lead singer Steve perry who joined the band after journey was looking for a lead and sound that could be more commercial and popular to keep to he band co founded by Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie out of Santana together since their more jazz rock fusion sound wasn't products Ng any radio hits. Something to hide may not have been a radio single but garnered acclaim from a school of music who owned a letter to the band to their surprise that something to hide was being used in music composition classes.
I read Steve didn't smoke, drank a little wine or beer, drank hot tea and honey, avoiding speaking between gigs to preserve his voice. Also, he was a countertenor. That's a full female alto's range!
Steve's mom played a lot of different music around Steve and one of his most influential singers was Sam Cooke. If you go and find Same Cooke's music, you'll see why Steve is so good.
Some Journey you would enjoy: Of A Lifetime, Wheel In The Sky, La Do Da, Winds of March, Feeling That Way/Anytime, Anyway You Want It. All rock. Enjoy and thanks guys.
Finally another reactor for this song! To answer your question, Steve Perry’s singing experience was with choir in school when he was a kid. That’s all I’m aware of but it sounds like he was well trained in it. His diction, consonants and vowels are always in the right place.
@@teridemola2386 His father sang to him when he was a small child, but his parents divorced when he was 7, and he never saw him again till he was much older. He was mesmerized by Sam Cooke from the age of 12, and imitated him 'till he seemed to be channeling his spirit as a teenager.
in one of the early interviews they said that by the end of the tour his voice would be so high that he was unrecognizable from the album so they had to change the song writing to keep his voice more grounded.
Journey line-up on this album: Steve Perry.Lead vocals. Gregg Rollie. Keyboards and vocals (occasional lead). Neal Schon. Guitar and vocals. Ross Valory. Bass and vocals. Aynsley Dunbar. Drums.
I've read that Steve was in choir and band in high-school and college. Not technically voice trained, but he learned so much about breathing, scales, and anything else he could use later to keep his voice in tip-top shape. Aaaamazing! ❤
Great reaction! I love your face when Steve reaches the top! Guitar Neal Schon from Santana band. Piano Johnatan Cain later years. If you want to see the masterpiece of live performances, and Steve reaching the angelic note, you should react to Journey " mother father" live from Houston 81. You will not regret. IT makes me goosbumps every time!! I Hope you will enjoy. Really a masterpiece of live performances, it can't be described by words.. just listen, enjoy and react for us 🙏
Gregg Rollie is the keyboardist here. Gregg was the lead singer until they got Steve Perry. On their first collaboration, the album Infinity, they traded lead vocals on several songs. Gregg is in the Rock Hall of Fame twice, once for his work with Santana where he sang all their early hits like Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va, etc., and then with Journey.
Steve Perry's mother and father were both singers. His father a crooner. His mother gave singing lessons part time. Steve has his ability inherited in his genes. He has a 4 octave range. Another great singer with 4 octave range is Freddy Mercury. At the time late 70s we were used to huge vocals from Robert Plant, amazing guitar of Jimmy Page, drums of John Bonham, song writing, bass and keyboards of John Paul Jones. This band Journey is the American Led Zeppelin. Neal Shon on guitar on par with Jimmy Page, Steves voice as good or better than Robert Plant. Jonathon Cains keyboards and guitar and song writing was platinum after platinum albums. Steve Smith on drums epic performances. Now with Arnel Pineda vocals there wouldn't be any concerts with out him in the band. New generations are discovering these incredible songs and Steve Perry's versions.
I love the era of Journey with Gregg Rolie in the band as keyboardist and sharing vocals as well as a writer. Journey had great radio success with songs after he left but to me the music was never as good
Steve was neurotic about his voice because he realized that a singer who has lost his voice is DONE So he took care of it. I've heard including vocal silence between gigs. I know he sang tenor in choirs but I'm not sure how much training he had.
Nobody can sing like Steve Perry a.k.a. the Voice. He had a great range (4 octaves + 5) and such extraordinary vocal technique that you could not tell where in his range he actually was. The piano player is Gregg Rolie. Elton is a great pianist and songwriter, but his voice is not in Steve's league. Not sure if Steve had lessons, but I think he likely learned a great deal about vocal technique in choir (if you have a great director, you learn a whole lot from them). The guitarist Neal Schon is one of the greats; he was recruited for Santana when he was only 15 years old.
Also...Steve realized early in his career that if he did not take care of his body, his voice would be fried in no time...and his career would be over. So he was pretty well-behaved compared to most rock stars, often opting for complete vocal silence from the end of one gig till sound check on the next. He got a reputation for being standoffish because of this. He also drank some kind of honey elixir and tried to keep caught up on his sleep.
Go down the rabbit hole with Steve Perry and journey- watch them live-1981 Houston- trust me. His vocals are at times in soprano range. This song not being popular is proof that everything else was better or a masterpiece.
The keyboardist is original Journey singer Gregg Rollie. Rollie sang on the 1st 3 Journey albums. Steve Perry joined on this album Infinity, their 4th album. Rollie remained for 2 more albums. Rollie and Perry shared vocals at times. Gregg Rollie was the singer, keyboardist for Santana and even performed at Woodstock. Journey guitarist Neal Schon joined Santana and played on a few albums. Rollie and Schon then formed Journey.
From Journey, when they rocked before Steve Perry, check out: Of A Lifetime, She Makes Me Feel Alright, I'm Gonna Leave You, Hustler, Next, Karma With Steve Perry: La Do Da, Feeling That Way / Anytime (live version), When You're Alone It Ain't Easy, Just The Same Way, Where Were You, Line Of Fire, Troubled Child, Ask The Lonely, Only The Young

All good choices. Need to add Winds Of March to that list. Especially live from PBS Soundstage In Chicago. Where Were You live from Houston, they go into Steve Smith Drum Solo right after.

Turd Ferguson is from Saturday night live ….Journey “ People and places” another hidden gem …..” Chain Reaction” with its cheesy but brilliant 80s video with ripping guitar solo

That is a good album I like the 1st album with Steve Perry on it. Then I think it Started to go downhill and became too much like pop music. Journey has some good albums prior to Steve Perry with a few good songs that aren't really 2 radio friendly but again excellent songs.
Steve Perry's voice and abilities are completely natural, no training, just a gift from God!
The70s &80s we’re no JOKE THERE ARE ARTISTS TODAY @the top of there game that wish they had this voice
I’m telling you guys, if you want to hear Steve Perry’s finest vocal performance, then listen to “Sweet and Simple”.
Something to Hide is pretty comparable to Sweet and Simple to me, but yes, Sweet and Simple is a gem!
I totally agree with you. Sweet and Simple is out of this world!!!
Dead on balls accurate statement.
Accurate!
When I heard it the first time (many many years ago) and he hit that high note, it blew my mind.
He sings above the clouds echoing perfectly blowing into space and leaving light in a dark hole. Gospel voice.
Love how he is singing a duet with Neil's guitar!!!
This is a great track off probably their finest album. No weak tracks. Pleasure hearing you covering and enjoying it. Cheers!
Steve Perry's nickname in the industry was simply "The Voice". And the song ends abruptly because it rolls on into the next one on the album.
