Very true statement, @lbanesed210, Attending their concerts back in the '70s and seeing how their level of musicianship along with a full stage width screen playing video that matched the story of each song created a fully immersive experience. Headphones are a must for Supertramp.
So cool to see you guys hearing all the little nuances Supertramp brings to the table. As great as their most commercially successful album Breakfast In America, is, the real Supertramp is what's to be found on the Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments albums. Two masterpieces that rank amongst the best of the decade and beyond.
@@CHAUNCEY.GARDNER. - Yeah, that piano solo at the end rips! And while I like the live version, when you introduce this song to someone, never cheat them of the experience of hearing the studio version FIRST!
Steely Dan, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac...It's all about the musicality. A time when every kid had to take band. That evolves into great music.
As Sp33gan said below, this is the "real Supertramp" They were a prog art rock group before they were a pop group. Crime Of The Century is one of the best-sounding, best-written, best-produced records you will find. We had music with DYNAMICS in the 70s! There is much written about how that has gone away and today most commercial music is flatter [loud but flatter] and has less in the way of peaks and valleys. Spend your thousands on home audio if you really love music.
This Supertramp fan's favorite Supertramp song. Lyrically, this speaks to everyone. Who hasn't needed more " time " or felt "the whole world's above him " at some point in life? And pure fire musically. The live version from the live album " Paris " is here on RUclips, a different energy, plus the video shows them in concert...while they're playing, a video of a train is being shown behind them. Quite the feat in the 1970s
The extraordinary part is that they played it to the letter “Live”... a totally mind blowing experience I’ve had the great fortune of witnessing several times in their heyday. ❤❤❤
I was blessed to see them 16 times in concert and they were all amazing. Loved the video they used fro Rudy as it made you feel like you were on that train.
i was a teenager listening to, amongst so many other great bands, led zep being my favourite, this song..... but not having heard this song in DECADES, I followed it carefully, as if it was just yesterday since i heard it, and remembered what the many changes were in the song...anticipating each one before it happened.........that is how well our ears were trained in those days, being surrounded by SO MANY GREATS!!!!!!!
One of my favourite tracks from one of my favourite albums. Supertramp are one of those "if you know, you know" bands. Somehow not quite household names, but they should be. Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America are masterpieces, museum quality albums. Supertramp, like many of the greatest artists, are not constrained by genre, but I like the think of them, in the best way possible, as Prog Pop.
Some groups just seem to have too much talent - this is a favourite amongst a whole bunch of amazing Supertramp songs. The inspiration, the composition, the piano, the orchestra, the vocals, the bass, all create a unique sound that I have loved for 50 years. Fantastic album, a classic of prog..
A buddy of mine lived as a self subscribed music critic. Took him to Supertramp show. They played Rudy, I looked at him and he couldn't clap, cheer! Nothing lol! He was in awe lol!🔥🤘✌
Excellent reaction! Their song, Fool's Overture, takes you on a similar journey. It's from their album, Even in the Quietest Moments, which doesn't get nearly enough love.
The Crime of the Century Album, in my opinion, is a true masterpiece. I taped it off the midnight album hour, before it became available in the stores. Fell in love with it immediately. Have listened to it faithfully for 49 years, and it never disappoints. The album is a vinyl must for you. Add to your Christmas list for one another. Thanks for sharing your reaction.
I make a 3 hour trip to my daughter’s house frequently and this is one of the albums I put on and listen to from start to finish to make the ride enjoyable. I just sit back and let the music take me there.
I really enjoy watching you guys react to Supertramp ! It's awesome watching younger generations than myself get to experience and witness their musical talent ! Rick and Roger were genius to say the least ! These guys have been my favorite for 45 + years !
Saw the 1979 tour stop in Vancouver. For Rudy, they used footage of an accelerating train very effectively! The somewhat recent remaster of this album is well worth the money. The dynamic range is tremendous.
Woot! Supertramp!! As above-Crime of the Century, Even in the Quietest Moments and Breakfast in America!!! Memories of Growing up with a Big Stereo set up(😉), and being high school -parents not home and Volume is UP! Rocking the House!❤❤❤😊
Fantastic review gentleman. This band is full of multi talented musicians. The layers of composition and soul is amazing. Absolutely need to check out Bloody Well Right, Crime Of The Century and School. If you liked Rudy you will be amazed by these two. Keep up the phenomenal job guy’s love what your doing.
This is “Art Rock” which was/is a sub-genre of rock/progressive rock and influences or was/is influenced by genres such as classic rock, experimental music, avant-garde music, classical music, and jazz.
Exactly. AOR (Album Oriented Rock) was creatively and carefully produced so that each song, and their transitions, created a whole work that added up to something much greater than the sum of it’s individual parts!
Couldn’t agree more, I was a big Floyd fan back in the day as well. In addition to Crime, the other album I always considered sacrilegious to break into segments was Wish You Were Here. Was ever much of a live concert goer in those years, due to the generally awful sound at most venues, but did manage to catch Supertamp at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver BC in ‘75, I think, and it definitely spoiled me.
For music of this caliber to be made and for record companies to be willing to put it out there, that’s something that we’ll never see again. Your Supertramp reactions are great. ✌️
Listening again to your Supertramp reactions and looking for one word to describe how each song has its own identity. Che, thanks for naming it! You said "Rudy" took you on a "journey" and I found the word I was looking for. Every song takes you to its own destination with its own unique scenery and vibe. Bring on some more Supertramp and thanks, as always, for the love and regard you give your reaction playlist!
Crime of the Century is their best album IMO. Not a weak song on it. From the consistency of quality of all the songs to the quality of the production and engineering. Especially for how long ago it was recorded. It was not as popular as Breakfast in America, but I have listened to it far more over the years. This album is worthy of an entire album review. That being said, I am a fan of deep tracks and Just Another Nervous Wreck off Breakfast in America is worth a listen. To me it would have fit nicely on this album.
Anything by Supertramp is a winning song. Breakfast in America is a number one album back from 1979. The Logical Song and Take the Long Way Home my all time Favorites.
I totally haven’t heard this song before. I’ve only heard the usual radio tunes. Thank you for sharing this tune. You so helped open my ears to some more Supertramp talent 👍🏻🎧🎹🎸
CRIME OF THE CENTURY - full reaction please. Sooo many of the albums from the 70's need to be listened to from start to finish. Too many to name but this is one of them.
Thanks, guys! This is such a beautiful song... and one of my favorites by Supertramp...(they are so talented instrumentally - and well-balanced).. always enjoy your reactions...
When I saw Supertramp at the Forum in LA for the 1983 tour, they played a black and white film that changed into sepia, then color footage (fairly high tech stuff back then) that was above the stage during Rudy,.The film was shot from the front car of a train, on a ride through a city and countryside (likely in Britain), and it started out normal speed as it puulls out of the station (when you can hear the start of the "train station sounds"), and then the film started speeding up, eventually going super fast as the music builds towards the end, and as the song ended the train slows down and pulls back into a station, and the people depart the train. It was mesmerizing to watch as the band played. It was an epic concert moment for me that I will always think of when I hear Rudy.
It makes me ecstatic that you guys are getting into Supertramp. They are one of my all time favorite bands/ I hope you stay with this Crime of the Century album as every song on it is amazing. Hope you react to School and Hide In Your Shell next. Love you guys!
This would be a great band to be in the studio with to watch their creative process… the chord changes divided among different instruments, importing unique sounds, finalizing the mix, etc.
Much of this great album was recorded at Trident Studios and made use of their infamous Bechstein piano. This instrument has a folklore all of it's own. It was used and favoured by Queen, Elton John, Carly Simon ... the list goes on. Trident also had one of the most musical sounding desks too, put to good use by Ken Scott. I have this album on A&M "Audio Master Plus" CD which reportedly used the best quality and least used masters available.
I feel so blessed that I got to see them for this album, the performance was amazing spot on to the album and they were so fun to watch. Love your reaction ya'll should do this whole album. Enjoy
Hard to believe that you could see Supertramp, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, Jethro Tull, Ambrosia, Kansas, Doobie Bros, and so many others for 6 to 10 dollars a ticket. A great time for a music lover to be alive.Still have many of my ticket stubs.
@@donaldcoe5699 I can remember paying 10. for Led Zepplin tickets back in the day and that was high. I had to polish my mom's silver for the money, it was worth it.
Is this band progy or WHAT? Changes, strings, hard rock, surprises, call and response, funky beats, distorted guitars, a real trip. Expressive. Dramatic, but above all.....musical.
In painting, there is a criticism that students will be afraid of their reflections and shadows. In music, the same is true pertaining to utilizing the lower keys. That's all Rick Davies who loved to choo-choo!
This song had two endings a dramatic ending first and then returns with a sad epilog ending. The first is Rudy as a character in the movie. The second is about Rudy who walks out from the movie after watching his life up on the screen. In other words, the solution to Rudy's vicious cycle - his Train to Nowhere - is to find somebody other than himself to care about.
Lord luvs ducks boys. The amazing way this album flows song to song the last two cuts omg If everyone was listening, then Crime of the Century...... Timeless
You'll never see Supertramp in concert again. I was fortunate to go to three of their concerts. Rudy is a very underrated song. To see them play it live brings this song to life and to understand the lyrics a bit better. I would recommend watching a Supertramp live video of them playing this song. Live they brought down a screen and showed a video of a 1940's train station and a camera fixed on the front of a train speeding through London and travelling the rails of England, through tunnels, crowds of people and so much more. it was awesome to see and mesmerizing. This band brought so much to music.
Love the story telling. An atmospheric train ride. Good to see you guys enjoying the music I grew up with. A suggestion... Genesis Peter Gabriel 25 Jan 1974 Midnight Special, The Musical Box... different and theatrical with makeup and masks telling the story.

Supertramp, THE masters of dynamics and this song is one of my favorites. They don't get enough recognition. With respect to the lyrics in the left ear, I believe it is supposed to represent the singers "inner voice" or guilty conscience. You guys would probably love one of their epic songs "Fool's Overture" or "Brother Where You Bound?" Their mixing and recording is so good, their LP's sound like CD's, no shit, try it some time.
Great reaction gents!! I would HIGHLY recommend doing this entire album - this song is but a taste (and a wonderful one at that) of the brilliance contained within!! The title track, Crime Of The Century, is a personal favourite. School, Asylum, Hide In Your Shell...so many amazing pieces. I always loved this song, but my appreciation of it went to the stratosphere after seeing/hearing it live - especially that buildup - the bass groove is so driving. Thanks for this. Cheers.
