This album is greater than the sum of its parts
Now that you’ve almost pieced it all together I can tell you’re starting to see that
This is why this is such a highly regarded work and a complete straight thru album listen , following the story from start to finish should help to draw that conclusion
Alan Parsons Project ‘ I Robot ‘ is very similar - you’ll enjoy most of the pieces but you’ll probably love ‘ the album listen ‘ afterwards as you see it all come together when done together in order
    Enjoy

Rudy knows that he needs to be....something substantial ...yet doesn't want to do it wrong be insignificantly. He wants to strike it true get it grand as he feels he deserves it to be...
Then when he better gain controll now. He feels like he's waited too long to try to get it just right.
He feels his time is finite..that he has to do something now.
Won't that be wonderful...to finally get it down " I'm substantial I've got it now it's comming into stride there's motion of substinance.. 🎼🎶that's real good I'm worthwhile I've got substanance its a gravitas momentous opus of life affirming drive and worthiness to humanity. I've made it now.
He's self satisfied 😌 the endorphins are settling in to his life affirming self worth.
It's sad bur after this inner thought process 😔 he will realize that it was all just mental fluff & he will be soon..
Back on his train....going nowhere really but he must get there but where..but where...but where..........???😞😞😞

Have you realised that this descending motif on the piano you enjoy, that is repeated by the strings at the end of the song, is a representation of the train's wheels? "Back on his train..." *strings in descending motif*
I love Rudy. Truly one of Supertramp's most overlooked songs. But my own favourite of theirs is coming your way. Crime Of The Century (song) is a masterpiece.

The Call and Response between the two leaders of Supertramp was wonderful. One of my favorite Rick Davies songs... along with the title track, Crime Of The Century.
I saw this played in my first ever concert... the Breakfast In America tour... and Rudy was a highlight. They had a huge screen in the background and played this film of a moving train... just amazing paired with the music.
There's some amazing stuff to check out with Crisis What Crisis (Soapbox Opera, Easy Does It / Sister Moonshine (react to them together!), The Meaning...
AND with Even In The Quietest Moments ("Give A Little Bit," "Babaji," "Even In The Quietest Moments," and, of course, "Fool's Overture."

Super song... Ever noticed diving into the late 60's and 70's is like a never ending treasure chest.... wouldn't it be nice if society of today took note and evolved back to those times where creativity and the higher minded faculties had a high stake in the essence and virtue of the end product.... not just $$ and the mind control symbolism of today's gunk.

Love how the guitar work does not try to dominate - it all contributes to the song itself. Very tasteful. Those strings just bring a lot of class... add some funk for fun in the middle. They are under-rated. Love how you bring this great music forward that might be passed by. Thanks for your good cheer and intelligent analysis.

Knew that would be the track that would probably jump ahead of School for you ( no knock at all on School of course )
Crime of the Century is a concept album and you’ve now been introduced to its protagonist - Rudy The story , the journey is his
Knowing this - when you go back and listen to Crime in its entirety ( I know you will at some point ) you’ll get even more out of experiencing the musical narrative of each of the ‘ chapters’
The title track is also outstanding and If Everyone Was Listening should be an enjoyable listen for you as well - then you can go back , listen to all of it in order and ........ do Crime as an album review

Yeah, people seldom mention his guitar work. Really obvious and obviously good on Bloody Well Right. As a kid (and a piano player) I was always keeping an ear out for bands or artists that combined good piano and guitar playing. Supertramp and Elton John had that. Billy Joel at times, but it was often one or the other in his songs. Big Shot is an exception.

So happy for you JP for getting to hear all this great music, and we get to share the experience. Supertramp was a popular band, but IMO deserved to be even more so based on their amazing progressive compositions, and in such an economical musical way, Nothing is superfluous, every sound has its place. And put together in such an approachable melodic way. Crime of the Century is perhaps their greatest album from start to finish, but Crisis What Crisis? is worth going through too.

In concert, projected on a screen at the back of the stage, there would be a movie (from the conductor's point of view) of a train barrelling down the tracks (during the long interlude near the end) and end at the string build up as it came into a station.

My favorite Supertramp song, I feel it is about me. I've had times in life where I've felt " the whole world is above me ", and I'm " on a train to nowhere", and" need more time". And I know what to do, but procrastinate and hide( the reference to coming out of a movie at the end). And, as usual, the great production/arrangement/musicianship Supertramp always has. Masterpiece, but, the whole album is

Amazing song that I'll never stop listening to. About the part that reminded you about School, you'll be happy that the last song on the album, Crime of the Century, also does it. To me, these two songs, Rudy and Crime of the Century, are almost equal in terme of musicality. To get the full effect, you need to listen the album from start to finish. To me, it's one of the best albums recorded, on par with Boston by Boston and Days of Future Past by The Moody Blues.

When they performed this in concert, they would show a sped-up film of a train journey (from London to Brighton, maybe?) during the “travel” section starting at the station announcements around 3:30 in the song (4:45 of your video) and ending at the big buildup near the end. Really added to the overall atmosphere of the song.

Hey JP! Excellent review for this classic song, however, it is not the best song on the album (in my opinion). The best song on this album has to be the title track "Crime of the Century". In that song you get a piano and drum clinic (from Rick Davies and Bob Sienbenberg). To be honest, I never have and never will think much of the second last song that is next on the album "If Everyone Was Listening", so don't expect much from that one. You SHOULD expect to be VERY impressed when you get to "Crime of the Century".

Rudy is one of their most progressive song in one way. I do not know what to say, everything is so perfect on this song. The build up on side B of this LP with Dreamer, Rudy, If Everyone Was Listening and the final song Crime of the Century is to be listen to in a sweep with your headphones on and a drink of choice in your hand. You noticed the drummer Bob C. Benberg (or his real name Bob Siebenberg). You will notice more of Bob C. Benbergs very tasteful drumming in Crime of the Century. One thing to talk about is that Supertramp’s core members stayed together for a very long time, even after Roger Hodgson left the group in 1984 I think it was.

Glad you liked Rudy. For me, it is one of those Supertramp songs that tells a wonderful story and sets a dramatic atmosphere. The sound effects of the train station sounds sets a cinematic tone. When I first heard it almost 30 years ago when I was re discovering Supertramp during my college days, I imagined scenes from old Hollywood movies. Very vagabond to me. Rick Davies' song arrangement on this is so telling of how he weaves stories through his music. Still blows me away to this day!

Then comes If everyone was listening : the only song I never listen to from this album. But Crime of the century closes it perfectly.
I hope you will listen to this album again sometimes! Imagine how great it can be once you are used to the songs, the concept as a all... Knowing that people like this album is one of the most conforting idea possible, a very positive sign.

I love "if everyone was listening". I mean yes its technically the weakest song on the album but the album is flat out flawless. It serves as a good breather between Rudy and crime of the Century. It's best enjoyed cranked at full volume

This is Supertramp's signature song. Thanks to Rudy in particular ( musically and narratively complex piece ), aficionados ( including critics ) have not yet been able to convincingly label their music, after more than 50 years. Everyone just says when in doubt: "strange phenomenon of Rock"? "strange phenomenon of Pop"? or less simplistically, "strange phenomenon of contemporary music"?

This is cool but on this fourth of July may I suggest the Founding fathers of Funk. James Brown "Mother Popcorn" , Curtis Mayfield "Superfly" , Sly and Family Stone "Thank You"(Falettme Be Mice Elf Again) The song that gave birth to the slap bass), Parliament Funkadelic "P.Funk Wants To Get Funked Up". I grew up with classic Rock but sadly music was seriously segregated. We missed out on a lot of Funk. Pre disco-when the music was truly the bomb!!!!

Sorry JP, but you should have listened to the coda/ending: "Now he's just come out the movie, numb of all the pain. Sad, but in a while.....he'll be back on his train!" Not a happy ending bro. - Other than that great analysis.

Rudy is definitely in their top five of "prog songs". I saw this live in Copenhagen in 75(?)....blew my mind.. of course, we smoked a lot back then..
I could be wrong, but Supertramp's one tiny flaw is their tendency to 'accelerate' the rhythm - as if they can't keep time.. It might be in the production.

There are time signature changes from 4/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 and the song has barely started. It starts in a minor which is the relative key to C. During the choppy piano section.. It's in Bb Major.. Giving tension in the key change... Then to Db Major. Which adds 3 more flats.. This whole section is building with nothing resolved then it goes from Dbmajor to Bminor.. 5 flats to 2 sharps... Right around the speak/reply section of hodgson and davies... And finally resolves from the chord build up back to where they began. Genius writing and theory.

Seems that every first listen page is now doing Supertramp songs.... can not get away from it right now. After you get your fill of them lets " dirty" things up a bit and maybe you can try a bit of James Gang? Joe Walsh's beginnings in Cleveland and it is great bluesy, funky and has a great edge to it. Funk # 48 and 49 are filled with classic Joe W. Want something a bit slower and Joe has some GREAT ballads he did with them. Collage is a fantastic tune. Ashes, the Rain and I is another GREAT ballad you would love. Then get back to the jams.... The Bomber, Stop, Woman will put you in ur place! lol! Cheers. Oh, and I like Supertramp... just being inundated by all of it right now is all.

Got the day off so, it’s a beautiful morning... Rascals? Yes, looked it up. Gonna work for myself today.
Another song I wasn’t sure I was going to like, slow burn time. Supertramp is so different, I just need to reorient my mind esp. in the morning... still have a dreamover.
Rudy was a trip. Shakti’d it was so good. Really helped to have your analysis, made the song come to life for me. Trying to break out of my personal prison, feel it can and will be done. Thanks Justin,

How did supertramp become successful originally? Like so many other album bands they appealed to the grammar school boys who only bought albums. For you americans a grammar school was attended by what was " supposedly" the top 10% of the cleverest kids in the country. They took a test their last year of junior school. 11 yrs old. If they past they received an academic education. It was why prog rock was considered elitist

This is an awesome track. I don't like Rick's voice very much, especially live, but in this it kinda works. In later live versions they sped up the climatic part, which made it more dense and exciting. Fantastic piece of music.

I think the school reprise section you refer to on Rudy also sounds like a tribute to the end of A Day in a Life off Sgt. Peppers. The Beatles being a major influence.
