This is actually my favourite song of all time, by far. And yet nobody I talk to has ever heard it. Gives me goosebumps to this day. Sound great cranked up loud.
The wind howling with Jerusalem playing in the background and then the band comes in; that's my favourite part, right up to the end.
WHile I can't be sure, the sample of Big Ben with the crowd cheering in the background really sounds lke newsreel footage from London on V. E. day. I'm sure I heard it before..
I was actually amazed that somebody had not heard it. I think I am showing my age a bit more 💛

Supertramp was one of the few bands who could replicate the studio sound live in concert. Consumate musicians.

Listen to the album "Crime Of The Century" some time. Every song is strong. It's their best album, very progressive with amazing arrangements.
And if the whole album is too much for a single video, at the very least, he should NOT break up the first two songs. They really belong together. ("School" ... "Bloody Well Right")

For me "Rudy" is one of their best if you want to listen more song oriented stuff . The closer of Crime of the century with the same name might be their most epic song and one of the best album closers i ve ever heard.

Fools Overture is a masterpiece, very cinematic. Crime of the Century is great, the whole album. A reasonable interpretation is that Fools Overture is about the fall of the British Empire, but has broader meaning about personal philosophy. The other good song on the album is Give A Little Bit, a song that has endured and might be more popular now than when it was released.
This track is a Masterpiece.
When I was 12 my older sister offered me the choice between a Supertramp Live in Paris 8-track or some other band. Choosing Supertramp was one of the best choices I've made in my life, and I find that live concert to be one of my favorites ever.

@@richcurtis813 Haha I think it was the Commodores. Good band but not on the level of Supertramp. I think she figured I'd go for Commodores because their name was more recognizable on pop stations.
I frequently go back to listen to this song on its own. My favourite track on the album, although the whole album is good.
On this album check out "Lover Boy" and "Even in the quietest moments".
This is a complete masterpiece.

I have this record. When I stand at my player and just stand and listen. I always cry. It gets to me everytime. Music can moves us in ways nothing else can. Love that you gave it a listen.
Every time I hear the speech given by Churchill “ we shall NEVER give up the fight, we shall never surrender”, chills go up and down my spine and I’m not even British!
I loved this song for a long time, the W5 theme got me curious. One of my ex -sister in-law was a big fan of Supertramp she told me the title of the song,went on RUclips and when i first listen to it , it blew my mind . It became my favorite Supertramp song.
Just bought the album with that song last week, it's sad that it's not any best of Supertramp album.
I'm sitting in a bar on my laptop when I saw this, so i can't wait to get home to check the video out. One of the best Supertramp songs of all. I'm glad you didn't start with their "hit" Breakfast in America, which isn't bad. But this is much more of a taste of the real band. I only got to see them once live. What struck me is that all the members could play all the instruments (except the drummer) . And would switch off. Their virtuosity was very high. Another nice play Jason.

They had to be versatile live, their songs have multiple keyboard parts that, if not done, deflate ( for lack of a better word) the songs. In later years, they did have sidemen aiding them
I interpret this about England being dragged into WWII…he also mentions ‘while everyone was sleeping, the boats put out to sea.’ (Dunkirk evacuation)
Then he refers to Neville Chamberlain in the 1930s, who made Hitler agree to not invade Austria, though that’s exactly what he did. They called Chamberlain a ‘fool’ up until the day he died.
Then Churchill’s famous speech at the beginning of war.
But then it takes on a much broader meaning. I think it’s Chamberlain who , after he passed, is trying to wake us (humans) up from our sleep. What more damage can we ‘fools’ do, we humans? How much more damage will we cause? We are on a path to destroy ourselves & the world with out foolish acts. Wars, murders, killing the planet, destroying each other. That’s how I interpret it. Fantastic song.
As for the sax, yeah it isn’t complex, it’s just effective. Supertramp has my favorite use of sax.
The whole album is an excellent ride.
The sections of the first half map onto the second half. It's almost like they played it twice, once without words and once with.

Dude, if you continue on the Supertramp journey you will discover what this band is really capable of. Incredible music song after song. Crisis what Crisis Is where they really got in their grove and the next two lps after that, Crime of the century and Even in the quietest moment are brilliant. All 3 together I cant even pick a favorite lp let alone a favorite song because there's TOO MANY! It's a shame that so few knew and and alot missed out before their claim to fame Breakfast in America hit the radio. I don't think you will ever regret giving them a listen.
Gotta agree with you here Mark. By the time of Breakfast, the songs got a bit more radio friendly. I prefer the 3 you mention here. I always play them in sequence. Very good listen!

I've always thought Supertramp was underrated. This song is good. I love "The Logical Song". You've likely also heard "The Long Way Home" and "Give a Little Bit" (which is constantly used in tv ads). But my favorite is "Goodbye, Stranger". I love the guitar solo at the end.

Goodbye Stranger is also my favorite of theirs. I prefer pop Supertramp over their experimental progressive stuff.

Excellent analysis JP. Check out (Sir) Winston Churchill's later life during WW2 and immediately after: "called the man a fool, stripped him of his pride everyone (etc)" - after being our war leader he was seen as old establishment and ousted from office during the post war election. "The boats put out to sea" - Dunkirk evacuation 1940. "Let's take to the skies" - Battle of Britain 1940. All ties in with his recorded speech of that time too, used in the extended intro. Churchill was later seen as a sort of King Arthur figure who will come again to protect our homeland from external threats. There are more parallels but that's enough to be going on with! Great piece of music imho; thanks for exposing it to a younger, wider, audience.

One of their most brilliant compositions. Watching them do this live was almost beyond belief.
I saw Supertramp in 1979.I was young and not seen many live bands at the time.I had heard the Albums Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietist Moments and loved them but didn't know what to expect from a live show. The performance was, and remains , one of the best I have ever seen. Their ability to replicate the album sound and an almost theatrical entertaining performance , combined with(for the time) mind bogglingly superb special effects and back projections left me stunned in awe.I write songs and perform now but the idea that I could re create the overall effect of the Songs Supertramp created still seem un achievable. Thanks you for introducing the joys of Supertramp to a new generation of listeners as they don't seem to get the recognition I think they deserve.

A beautiful and epic song, Supertramp were such an amazing band with two brilliant singers who made the songs their own, shame they no longer work together as they produced some startling songs together

For me I heard the keyboard part of this threw my child hood and into the 80s on a CTV news show up here in Canada called W5 was not till i was in High School and got this Album and when this song came on and got to the Keyboard part my mind exploded i had no idea ....... i Love it for its Floyian like approach and sounds....tO me it is Supertramps Stairway to Heaven or there Comfortably Numb

Supertramp is one of the finest bands from the 70's/80's. I happy you finally got around to reacting to one of their songs. Whenever I hear Tramp, memories of camping, cottage, hiking, wilderness trips come pouring in. Tramp along with bands like Pink Floyd and Styx are staples when I would lay on a hammock and stare at the sky or stars at night and let the music take me. There's a certain warmth and comfort I get when I listen Tramp. For me bands like Tramp are meant for personal listening (solitude). Just you and the band and nothing else and allow yourself to drift and ride the melody. Great Reaction. More Tramp when you get a chance.

Wow! This song is a DEEP cut by Supertramp. I saw them play this in concert in 1977 in Milwaukee. I was 2nd row, right in front of Rick Davies! What a concert! My friend called in to get tickets and used his mother's credit card. We were shocked when the tickets arrived in the mail! Roger Hodgson wrote this song and referenced Winston Churchill's speech during the days of Germany's Blitzkrieg of London early in WWII. He also referenced the sinking of Atlantis and Aristotle writing about it, and forced to publicly commit suicide by ingesting poison. Very cool and sad.... 😕😟

Just a bit of trivia... Even In The Quietest Moments was recorded at the famous Caribou Ranch Studios in Colorado.
Going back through your videos and hit this one. Huge Supertramp fan, owning every album, solo, and even the Argosy stuff (Roger Hodgson). Even in the Quietest Moments (the album) is a masterpiece, concentrating heavily on acoustic instruments in most of the songs: real piano, real horns/sax, acoustic guitar, etc, and only augmenting with synths and the like. Supertramp (until the split after Famous Last Words) had two different songwriters with different perspectives on life, leading to an interesting dichotomy in their music. Logical Song, Give a Little Bit, School, and Fools Overture, are Roger Hodgson songs. Bloody Well Right, Rudy, Brother Where You Bound, Goodbye Stranger are all Rick Davies songs. The amazing musicianship on this particular album is found in its subtlety. Nothing is ever "over the top," but every note, every instrument, is the right sound at the right place.
It's fun to watch a somewhat younger person discover the great music I grew up with JP. Excellent choice. I really like the different moods and build-ups this song goes thru. As usual there are many more interesting songs on this and other Supertramp albums. At one point there was talk of Roger Hodgson who left Supertramp replacing Jon Anderson who left Yes, I think it was around the Yes-Rabin years. Interesting combination. Wonder what great songs could have emerged from that combination...

I have always loved Even in the Quietest Moments from this album
The song is actually a typical Roger Hodgson piece. Here are some picks from WP: It came primarily from a few melodies that Roger had worked out on the string machine thing we use on stage. Hodgson has stated that the song's lyrics are essentially meaningless, explaining: "I like being vague and yet saying enough to set people's imaginations running riot". ...The front cover is an unusual photo of an actual snow-covered piano and bench with a scenic mountain peak backdrop-an actual, but gutted, grand piano was brought to the Eldora Mountain Resort (a ski area near Caribou Ranch Studios)-which was left overnight and photographed after a fresh snow. The sheet music on the piano, though titled "Fool's Overture", is actually "The Star-Spangled Banner".
I believe that Roger's comments were ment ironical or even sarcastical - with these lyrics he kinda resigns to the fact that humanity seems not to be able to resolve the big problems of our world. Fantastic song anyway ....

Another great video and song choice. I love this album and the title track is one of my favourite Supertramp songs. Crime of the Century is my favourite of their albums although Breakfast in America is their most commercially successful. Plenty of great Supertramp songs to choose on those albums. Roger Hodgson is highly underrated as an artist and songwriter.

There is an investigation type news show on in Canada called “W5”. It’s theme song for years was the first part of this sing...when the beat and synths first come in. Many who watched the show for years never knew who preformed the intro, but I did.....Supertramp is one of my all time favourite bands. I’m saw them twice live....it was an unforgettable experience.
There are some fantastic live versions of this song on youtube, by Supertramp's singer Roger Hodgson with a full orchestra. The sound of a complete orchestra makes the song even better. Search for the video "Fool's Overture - Voice of Supertramp Roger Hodgson w Orchestra".

Sadly there are no videos of the entire band playing live, or at least that I'm aware of.
There is a lot going on and some unusual melodic choices, but it's one of my favourites. I came across this from a mix tape someone made for my brother and loved it immediately. I always feel like there should be more to it, not that I want it changed just that at the end I feel like they could do more rounds of build up and new movements. The first personal copy I got was on the "Paris" live album and I realised there were many more songs I knew of than i realised. I heard Logical Song on radio and also loved that but it was a little more Pop. Excellent review - I dont always agree with your viewpoint, but I don't feel like you ever make me feel like you expect me to. I still find reviews of yours that I missed when you released - hopefully these "johnny come lately" comments do also reach you. Please keep up the good work.

Winston Churchill is the man called a fool I believe in this one. He was PM and saw England through the war. As much as he is quoted and revered today, I believe there was a time when he got the bad end of the stick.

Exactly. He was sounding the alarm about Germany in the mid-30's and stood alone. And how he was voted out of power after the war, after all he had done for Britain in it's darkest hour, was shameful.

Breakfast in America is a fine album, but not anywhere near as good as Crime of the Century. Fool's Overture is from the Only In the Quietest Moment album.
I agree with you about the Logical Song, but I have never really connected with other Supertramp songs; just not my cup of tea. But my favorite band, King Crimson, worked with Supertramp's Richard Palmer-James for 3 albums... he was the lyricist. And it was awesome. The song The Nightwatch tells the story of the painting of the same name by Rembrandt. And it's lovely.
You nailed this one. My take was that the entire thing was about Churchill. The title track from this album is definitely worth a listen.

For my money, 'Crime of the Century' is their magnum opus, a true concept album to a degree that I don't remember 'Even in the . . .' as being. I see you've done a couple of songs from CotC, so I'll have to check out your reactions. 'Rudy' is my highlight from that album, but the whole thing is good.

A Masterpiece
Supertramp is one of my favorites groups. I've listened to their 'Live in Paris' album hundreds of times. I think The Logical Song is one of their best and easily the most commercially digestible song of theirs. Their song "Give a little bit" fits that description as well. There was a lot of inner turmoil in the group in their later years and their music suffered for it. They didn't really do anything notable after the Breakfast in America album. Now, these videos always make me think of other groups... put this one on your list; Squeeze and the songs Tempted, Up The Junction or Goodbye Girl. You've probably heard Tempted before. Many of their songs are story driven and I know you like that in your music so I think you would enjoy quite a few of their songs for that reason (Up The Junction being one of them.)

4 Just Get To Its. Owned this record way back when. Liked the middle section. Beginning and end went on and on. Loved 'Logical Song' from "Breakfast in America" album. Supertramp are hit and miss with me.
Ps, I’m not a historian but Churchill was voted out as Prime Minister after the war (called the man a fool..Stripped him of his pride...”). I always found it strange that such an Epic historical figure could fall so fast. Politics 🕸.

It's called 'what have you done for me lately, and what can we lie about to get power and money'. They didn't deserve him. After he had saved them from the greatest threat to civilizatoin in over a century. Men like that are very rare, especially at the leadership level.

Supertramp is a British band who explored a WW2 theme in this song, about a part of Britian's past that was a win but also a tragedy in their history. Pink Floyd was another British prog rock band that explored that part of their history.
Supertramp frequently incorporated video into their songs. It is used as an instrument, and adds to the song. Lots of the samples you are discussing are the sounds from the video clips played in the song. In concert, you find yourself watching the video, the band becomes secondary for periods (just like other members of the band often fade into the background during the vocals or a guitar solo, for example). I rank my Supertramp show among the best visual shows I have ever seen. Definitely the best opening to a show. A shame you can't see them.
Always look forward to your reactions to songs, particularly with prog rock. It would be great to see you react to Close To The Edge by Yes. especially the first song. I believe your cerebral mind would find great delight in this piece.

I'm 62 and English, and to anyone of my age and above it's very clear.
btw. the 'boats putting out to sea' refers to the flotilla of over a thousand boats, many of them private pleasure vessels, fishing boats et al. that went to pick up the stranded British forces during the early part of the war.
Love SuperTramp. They use a lot of counter-melodies and mix different sounds into there compositions.
Hey JP have not commented for a while... but I been wanting to recommend another Yes track (It can happen ) the different nuances and lyrics had a profound impact on me as a 24 year old with 2 kids and 1 on the way.... to look past my self and and get a grip on life and push forward 37 years later with 5 beautiful grand kids and Christ In my life I can definitely say (it can happen ) you can do it on your channel or JPMP.

I love Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" album. To me, all the songs in that album flow one to the next. The album turns into an argument between the two singer/songwriters. Each song a rebuttal to the previous one. As others have mentioned, the songs Breakfast in America, Take the Long Way Home, and The Logical Song are high points.
You mentioned that in this song you thought he was talking about Jesus, then things got murky. There's a song late in the Breakfast in America album called Is It Mine? which is clearly spiritual in nature. Years later, I heard an interview where he went song by song through the album, but when asked about Is It Mine? he sounded sheepish, embarrassed, and said it was a phase. Would not say anything else about it.
Not sure if this song is later in their discography, but changing views might explain the increasing murkiness of the lyrics. Dunno.

Crime Of The Century is up there with the best of the 70s albums by any band...and yes, I include Floyd, Zepplin, Sabbath, Zappa and all the rest.

Beardfish is a great prog band from sweden that didn't get enough play before they broke up about 5 years ago. I think they have ~7 albums, each with its own identity. I believe I gave you tracks off of albums 5, 7 and 2 respectively. I think you'd dig them. Thanks again!

This song is the perfect segue into "Dance on a Volcano" by Genesis. Just begin "Dance" during that last note. One of the perfect mixes from our prog rock station in the 70's.
“The Logical Song” lies in the middle of their best songs. Very radio friendly in ‘79 for that years best selling album BIA. My personal favorite from Breakfast in America is “ Just Another Nervous Wreck”. Rick Davies slays that tune, very underrated.
For me Supertramp's top 3 albums are #1-Crime of the Century #2-Even in the Quietest Moments #3- Breakfast in America.
You should do the whole Crime of the Century album, if not the whole album then a couple tracks; "Rudy" "Hide in Your Shell" "Asylum" or any others as they are all good. Fools Overture is a favorite of mine, Thanks Justin.

You probably know "Give a Little Bit" as well! The Logical Song is definitely tops. 'Take The Long Way Home,' 'Even In The Quietest Moments' 'Breakfast in America'... man there's too many to list here!
Fool's Overture is epic. The simple opening piano is beautiful. If you like gradual buildup in your songs, as I do, it's the ideal one. The denouement is orchestral instruments rising to a crescendo during warmup much like the Beatles might/would do. There are two themes running simultaneously in FO, I believe. The defence of England during the Second World War and the ultimate evisceration of British PM Neville Chamberlain but also how people need religion or God at important times in their life but forsake Him ("Called the man a fool, stripped him of his pride; everybody was laughing until the day he died". I believe that sentiment applies to both Chamberlain but in particular to Jesus Christ in His time.) Spirituality runs through many Supertramp songs. I think the characters mentioned, "Holy Man, Rocker Man" etc. might refer to people who are seen as or pretend to be 'saviours' but are false prophets.
FO is so iconic that for years one of the national TV stations in Canada (CTV) used part of it for its theme for its W5 news program.
The Logical Song is a great song. When I was in elementary school there was an electronic game called Coleco Football that my friends and I would play for hours. Supertramp used a sound from the game for the Logical Song. That sound caught my attention when I first heard the song and I’ve loved it ever since. They also used the "pop-o-matic" sound from the game Trouble in the song. I was in a cover band in college and we used to play TLS. Lot's of memories packed in that one song.

I agree with you 100%- great track. School is written by Roger Hodgson. The entire Crime of the Century album is magnificent. I got chills when I heard the harmonica opening at Roger's concert in London. WOW- best concert ever. I just closed my eyes and it sounded like the original album. If you liked School, I bet you'd like Had a Dream (Sleeping with the enemy) from Roger's solo album In the Eye of the Storm. I'd like to hear your comments on that one!
Might be the most prog song Supertramp did. Loaded with keyboard riffs/solos, John Helliwell nails the sax solos/riffs, as usual. Lyrics deep( reportedly about Winston Churchill). You think AND feel, a Supertramp trademark. And still fresh, over 40 years later.
YES, I'm so glad that you heard that one part as being about Jesus …. I think that the song has more than one story … obviously WW II … that crown with the big ben chimes I visualize the crowds in the streets after London has been bombed …. actually knew some one that went thru this as a child..Joker man etc, etc, I see as Roger singing about himself and the different things he had to go thru
Best track on this album by far........I totally recommend to you ANYTHING by a Brit band ( my favourites ) called 'The Stranglers' ..." Hanging Around " ...is their BEST track mate.
Supertramp is my favourite group. Logical Song and the whole album of Breakfast in America are great but IMHO it is no more than their third-best LP - Crime of the Century and Even in the Quietest Moments ahead of it. Crisis What Crisis! and Famous Last Words aren't far behind BIA.

Although, I'm sure they've been featured elsewhere.... I'm aware of a very prominently featured spot that they had with 'Give A Little Bit' which was during Lois' drive through the CA desert in Superman The Movie; it was playing on her radio when she was nearing or passing the gas station.
Gotta admit, I read the sentence as "when she was nearing or passing gas" and I chuckled.

Everybody know Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" - and of course I am talking about the song. But it's really worth discovering the album. It's a compilation of hits, but when you listen to the album as a whole you will encounter a kind of logical thread through all the songs. Well, maybe it's just my own perception because I used to listen to the (vinyl) album pretty often, but anyway ... take alone the opening and closing songs the mostly underrated "Gone Holywood" and "Child of Vision", both a fine collaboration of the two singers Rodger Hodgson and Rick Davis. An all-time classic album

If you can, check out the live version of "Fool's Overture" from Supertramp's PARIS album. It's one of the rare cases, like Genesis' SECONDS OUT, where the live versions beat the studio versions (with the exception of the BREAKFAST IN AMERICA material). The band's growth as players and the overall production make the difference.
