  • Welcome to ‘Prog Song Sunday’, where we listen to a Progressive Rock song together and then discuss our thoughts about that particular piece of music. In each episode, you get two different perspectives- the seasoned Prog fan who has 20 years of experience listening to the genre (Nathan), and the fresh new listener who is only now discovering the world of Progressive Rock (Jana).
In this episode, we are featuring "Fool's Overture" by Supertramp! Please listen along with us, and continue on to our discussion to see how Jana feels about her first dedicated listen to this prog rock gem and Nathan’s background and history with this particular piece of music!

This is my favourite song from one of my all-time favourites bands.
For me it's one of the five best songs ever written, standing in one row with Bohemian Rhapsody, Music, Child In Time and Stairway To Heaven.
    Thank you , Roger Hodgson!

One of my Supertramp tracks. John Helliwell grew up not too many miles from where I grew up.

This song is amazing and is about an amazing and often misunderstood man, Winston Churchill! At 5:17 you can hear the end of his very famous speech, “we will NEVER surrender!” ❤
I love that you knew that was Churchill a lot of people don’t.

John Anthony Helliwell. Massively talented artist , seen playing with his jazz-fusion outfit Crème anglaise. Very different to Supertramp. Fab. But Crime of the century for me is this bands best LP. 😍 Thanks Jana and Nathan.

An fascinating bit of British history in this song. This song is Roger's tribute to Sir Winston Churchill. It starts from "Seig Heil" and "We Will Never Surrender" in 1939. Churchill is credited with sparking resistance to nazism, and helping Britain and the whole world defeat the fascists of the time....but he was generally considered an anachronism before the war, a hero during the war and later a fool. Once the war was over he was "unelected" from office. His funeral reminded the world of his life, and that he might have been better respected. One of my favourite songs by Supertramp.

Pure prophecy . They truly saw what was going to happen to this once great country . I saw them at the Albert Hall many years ago and they explained, through their lyrics , the difficult phase of reaching adulthood .

I feel Supertramp are borderline prog, like 10cc and Electric Light Orchestra they are more art rock with elements of prog. Fools Overture is one of their more prog tracks, from my 2nd favourite album after Crime of the Century. How about adding ELO's Symphony For A Rainy Day to your list.

    • @NathanOnShuffle

I agree, I’ll have to add that ELO track to our list!

@@NathanOnShuffle it's called "Concerto for a rainy day" and it's actually 4 songs that comprise one side of an album. Mr. Blue Sky, one of their best known songs, finishes up the concerto.

@@poluxsaurus1454 Thanks for clarifying! I'm sure Jana has heard 'Mr. Blue Sky', but probably not the others. Could still be a fun one to cover on the channel...

A masterpiece, but that is the standard for Supertramp...prefer the live version from " Paris ",( a bit more energy to it) but that is nit-picking
Roger Hodgson as a solo artist has many great versions with an orchestra added, search his RUclips channel

Can't help but think of Ukraine when I hear this now. How Zelensky invoked Churchhill. As we feel we are sinking into the sea, the 'fool' can lead out of the storm.

I think Jana will be more comfortable hearing a 67min song... Silhouette by Edson's Children, please.
